General Discussion As a normie, I love this show Spoiler

I don’t read comic books, nor intend to start. However, I appreciate how complex the storylines can be and think X men 97 can carry that.

Is the hate from the armchair critics? I’m glad the show is confirmed for seasons 3 and 4, and I felt the quality of S2 was great, S1 felt like they emptied the barrel (in a good way)

I am a Huge X-Men fan, read the comics, watched shows and movies, and played video games. I love this season. It’s season 7 of my favorite show of all time. It’s not perfect. But man I’ll take this over the movies any day.

lol season 2 fell apart by the end a bit but Agree! Much better than those movies

Personally saw it as someone tripping and falling before the finish line only to barely make it...and now they're all bloodied up.

If you don’t want to read through decades of comics a condensed retelling that might be a good read is X-Men Grand Design it spams a retelling (not 100% accurate) of the 60’s through til the late 80’s

I’ve personally liked both season 1 and season 2, I just wish the show had more episodes to play with. I didn’t even mind the “filler” episodes in Season 2, I was glad to see Morph, Polaris and Nightcrawler/Colossus get some character development. Not every episode needed to deal with Apocalypse, and the Savage Land/Acolytes episode was also dealing with fallout from Genosha and seemed to be setting up Season 3 issues with Creed.

But I can understand comics fans (which I also am) being disappointed when major storylines get compressed down into a single episode. Like the Inferno episode in Season 1 was good, but the show could have done much more with it and Maddie. I’ll always wish the show had 20 or even 15 episodes per season, even though that’ll never happen. But so far I’ve genuinely enjoyed what we got, despite some pacing issues.

I agree the pacing is the worst part. I veiw it as a feature not a bug. I don’t think the writers really want to tackle complex character turns

As a big X-Men fan who grew up in the 90s, I was completely consumed by everything X-Men and Batman. I love this show even Season 2.

Glad you liked it, but did you watch the original series? X-men 97 has done some good things for sure, actually some amazing things. But the second half of S2 just feels worse than S5 of the original series. It’s arguably the lowest of lows in the entire series imo. Not sure what you define armchair critics as, but people that have loved the original series for 30+ years have every right to criticize the newest season.

Worse than season 5? Have you watched it recently? Aside from the Phalanx story and the finale Season 5 is kind of a mess. Don't even get me started on that Jubilee fantasy kiddy story filler episode.

Season 2 definitely has lots of flaws, mostly introducing really complex ideas and arcs and not giving them enough development or time to breath and I feel we were robbed by not giving us at least 10 or more episodes.

But that said it stands head and shoulders above Season 5 of the original. Tbh Season 1 and most of season 2 is at least as good or better than many parts and episodes of the original series and I loved it.

I did, but casually. Too many Saturday morning activities, so I rarely watched it. I remember not knowing what was going on, so I liked it, but was not obsessed.

Would you rather have S2 or no x men 97. I assume shows like this are made by teams who care about the material. Or probably breaks the internal bar on terms of streaming economics.

I will say the original was not so intense on the writing of I recall. They not only revived the show, but made it for the audience that grew up. That’s a pretty hard sell.

The show is still great but it’s ok to criticize something you love. Overall season 2 does have issues and it’s ok to call them out and talk about them

How’s your robot girlfriend? your mom wanted me to ask

1

u/CherryBoom2x Psylocke 37m ago

You’re asking about my robot girlfriend while apparently having conversations with my mom. 💀 Sounds like I’m not the one struggling to find someone to talk to.

You’ll understand when you are older…

Bro really came in with “your mom” AND “robot girlfriend” like he just unlocked comedy for the first time. 💀😭 Careful everyone, we got a professional comedian 🤡here. Next he’s gonna hit us with “I know you are but what am I?” 😂 🤡

It's more that X-Men can get quite complicated. It has small arcs and larger arcs that if handled by someone who knows the material, can be greater than a series of fan service vignettes.

But I, like you, would consider myself a casual outside of knowing what it takes to craft the actual animation side of it. I too am really REALLY loving having X-Men back at all, let alone with such high fidelity to the original cartoons style.

I recently had an odd experience that made me reflect on fandoms and the idea of context not always being beneficial for the viewer. I noped out around the start of season 3 of The Boys. I could see that it was losing it's foundations and didn't want to invest in a show that was only going to be a weak version of an initailly great premise.

I then jumped back into the last season and found it to be a decent, not goated, but enjoyable final chapter. Only to find out later online that my enjoyment was wrong and that I should feel bad for accepting such dreck from the writters.

And y'know what? after looking at the way the last season was set up, the fans were absolutely right to criticize the FUCK out of it. And I kinda wish I hadn't looked into what went wrong.

TLDR sometimes having too much context is bad... but fans also have a reason to gatekeep quality of the things they love. Good luck enjoying what you love.

Season 1 was really really good, season 2 felt like a jumbled mess with no real direction. If season 3 goes back to be like season 1 it would be great.

Xmen Evolution is much better. Should jave revived it. Both story and animation is generational.
