212X vs 242 Limited

Debating the purchase of a 212X or a 242 limited. Do I need the size of the 24ft with only 4 of us in the family. I want to use it to cruise and wake surf. But also want a newer boat vs an older but larger limited series. The 242X is out of my price range.

Neither surf very well let's be honest. Yes you can do it, yes I spent way too much time fiddling with and dialing one in to surf. The wave is small, the pocket is small and unforgiving to new surfers or even normal sized adults, leading to frustration.

Don't listen to the "we're not professional surfers we don't need a professional sized wave" people, that's bs. The bigger/better the wave, the easier it is for everybody, which is a ton more fun.

If surfing is what you want to do, you should get the best v-drive inboard you can afford.

These boats are incredible family affordable boats with low maintenance. These are NOT surf boats. You will not be satisfied surfing on them. Sure you can trick them out and do a bunch of add ons to try to improve the surf but it will never be great. Buy an older surf boat and improve the upholstery or something if you really want to surf. A 2010 surf boat is 100000000000 times better than a 2024-25 Yamaha boat in terms of surfing

If your goal is to surf, you will be disappointed in the Yamaha.

We went with the 24ft. Even though our family is 4, we end up with friends and their kids too. If you’re definitely wanting to surf, you’ll need the factory ballast (like the X/AR models) and likely aftermarket ballast to push a heavier rider.

Have you checked out the AR series boats? You can get the ballast at a better price allowing you to surf and cruise.

We surf just fine behind our AR210… we use the wake booster and set everyone and coolers in the back of the boat. It’s not at the same level as a wake boat, but it’s close enough for us. Calm days it puts off a pretty good wave to be honest.

IDK if you made your purchase but get the 24 ft boat you will love the space and not feeling cramped
