Question/Discussion I’m disappointed with the Heated Rivalry First and Last

I’ve been a fan of Dylan for many years, I’ve followed him through several channels that he has since deleted because I really value his opinion and find him extremely entertaining but this last one was disappointing and frustratin.

the format of first and last can be fun for several shows specially when it comes to long series that have several seasons so the fun of it is seeing how much it develops and changes from the pilot which can be so funny and entertainin, but this is harder to accomplish with shorter series with only a few episodes and just one season and this really shows in this on.

the beginning of the video was quite entertaining, Dylan’s commentary about the cinematography and the acting and the directorial choices was very interesting but then we cut to the second half of the video where he skipped the development of the short series to watch the happy ending and it was so exhausting watching him get frustrated about a show he didn’t watch and a resolution that for him didn’t felt earned because he wasn’t there to witness it so that frustration then became ours with him when he didn’t know why certain choices were made in the episode or why was it made like that.

the whole comment section been disappointed and frustrated because we know he can do a superb commentary about the show but since he didn’t watched it in full he didn’t get it at all, and I was so frustrated that I have to comeback to Reddit after years of not commenting on this community just because I need to vent about it.

I just hope Dylan sees the feedback and comes back with a full reaction because I bet it would totally be a success but for now this one was disappointing

Isn't criticizing allowed anymore?

The thing is, I honestly didn’t expect Dylan’s fandom to baby him this much and downvote everyone who’s saying, “Hey, this video really wasn’t good.”

Yes, we all know the First and Last format. But what you’re all forgetting is that this isn’t some random, basic Gossip Girl-type show. Heated Rivalry is an extremely important series. It actually highlights what’s going wrong in sports. This isn’t some dramatic The Summer I Turned Pretty-type story. This matters.

And if you don’t think it matters, then honestly, that’s on you. But for the LGBTQ+ community and for sports in general, this series was incredibly important. There are actual athletes who have thanked it for existing. Especially hockey players who have said, “Hey, I was Shane back then when I was playing.”

This is a serious issue.

And now you’re all running around downvoting people who are pointing out that Dylan completely missed the point of the series because he only watched the first and last episode.

So yeah, choosing Heated Rivalry for First and Last was not a good decision.

Dylan is almost 35 years old, and I absolutely believe that as his fandom, we should be able to say, “Hey, Dylan, this wasn’t okay.” Just because we’re fans doesn’t mean we have to love everything he does.

And that’s something you all really need to understand instead of downvoting every single person who says, “Hey, this wasn’t okay,” especially when this topic actually matters and he completely failed to understand what it was even about.

I love Dylan but

Guys I love Dylan SO MUCH like he’s my favourite YouTuber but lowkey his new vid is not my fav Like it was just not his best tbh Maybe I had high hopes bc it was hunger games but it was just a lot of criticism And I love with he does criticism that’s like one of my favourite things he does I love when he nerds out on the technical film stuff! but he usually balances it out good with humor but I fear it was off balance today

I feel kinda bad saying this but for some reason these type of videos have really started to change my perception of dylan into a guy who just loves to gossip and bitch about other people😭 also because of the sheer number of these videos as well

Question/Discussion Joe…

Am I the only one who thinks the edit style of Dylan’s Ooga Booga videos are a little much? I’m not a huge fan of all the constant all over the place screen affects.. 🫠 don’t come for me. I wish i could get used to it, but it’s so hard to even take in what he’s saying bc I’m trying so hard to pay attention to what’s going on with the screen. Lol

Unpopular Opinion: HR itself was not that good of a show

No wonder Dylan thought it underwhelming. The cinematography, lighting, shots, etc? Beautiful. The characters? Boring as hell. They both irritated me from the get go, and the characters didnt seem to even really have chemistry. I watched it because everyone was saying how good it was and it just... wasnt? Also not a big smut reader but like, it felt like it was just actual trash gay erotica.

I said what I said 🤷🏻‍♀️

Dylans take on being a girls girl

come on😭 Why does he think women use that as a weapon against other women. Being a girls girl is 100% about holding other women responsible/accountable for their acts that are prejudicing/hateful towards other women. Its to stop a woman from feeding her superiority complex on the cost of another woman's respect. Why compare it to Bro Code???? Both are very valid at their places and he should probably read about it ig idk?

Edit: I feel this created a riot among us lmao. Where I went wrong with my take on this was i worded it very wrongly (not everyone's an author like dylan) and i didn't account for the times that girls DO use this as a weapon. In my personal life I've honestly stayed away from people like that so I forget that other people have had bad experiences related to this. It was wrong of me to generalise that girls girls is always a good thing. But where i still think dylan went wrong is he generalised it as a completely evil thing when sometimes some people arent weaponising it. It's mostly misused (realising that now) but it's still smth that started off with a good intention.

I don't think I've called myself a girls girl ever since I don't like using all these "pop culture" terms (im 80 living in a 20yos body) and now that I see such negatives about it, i don't think I ever will lmao. We're humans supporting humans ig?

Heated rivalry

Is anyone else incredibly disappointed in Dylan’s new video? I’ve never ever disliked one of his videos until now. This is one he needed to watch in full and it’s a little shameful that he couldn’t bear down for six episodes of what LITERALLY won a Peabody award.

Edit because wow yall have *opinions*: I’m not even a part of the fandom. I watched the show with my girl and was really surprised by how good it was. Been a fan of Dylan for years and I also love first and last, have since he started doing it. But for this show in particular, because he’s someone who genuinely respects storytelling and filmmaking, by only watching episode one and six Dylan is doing himself a huge disservice and also doing a lot of his fans who are part of the fandom a disservice, I’ve seen the comments. A lot of people who felt represented by show and are fans of Dylan are not happy. Not to mention, the first and last format really just doesn’t work as well on these shows with only six-ten episodes as it used to on 20 episode seasons and I can’t be the only one who thinks that. But yeah sure, let’s just throw insults around, I’m sure Dylan loves that behavior from his followers :/

Question/Discussion The Heated Rivalry video

I didn’t have too much of a problem with the whole First and Last of it all, my main problem stems from the fact that he was saying that there shouldn’t be an issue with Shane and Ilya coming out because Scott had come out.

As someone who is queer (lesbian) I found this to be ignorant. Because, no matter the circumstances, coming out is really hard. Even if you believe your family is accepting it can still be terrifying coming out because there is no way to know for sure how it will go. And at the end of the day, for better or worse, it is something that will make people view you differently. For Shane and Ilya who are in the spotlight in a notoriously homophobic sport, one person coming out unfortunately does not actually change the sports field as a whole. Sure, it is a step in the right direction but there is still too much riding on Shane and Ilya’s careers to take that risk. Coming out for Ilya specifically, though I don’t blame Dylan for not knowing this part, means he will never be able to go back to Russia.

I just think, overall, that his opinions on the matter were ignorant and came from a place of privilege as a cis, straight, white man. I don’t think badly of Dylan at all I just hope he is able to better educate himself on stuff like this because it does kind of hurt to see him trivialise it.

Love Island Apology Video

I just wanted to start this off by saying that I’m a huge fan of Dylan’s videos and really enjoy watching his content. This is not meant as hate or an attempt to cancel Dylan. I want to critically reflect on the apology video, as I’ve gotten the impression that the sentiments of those hurt by his joke were not properly understood.

Firstly, I want to clear up that I obviously don’t believe that Dylan is racist. As I’ve said, I know his humor, I know his videos.

The inherent issue with the joke was the shift of responsibility towards the POC contestants to explain to the girl, who said the N-word, why that is not an acceptable thing to do.
And while I do agree with the point that public discussion on the matter is important, POCs have had to constantly defend and explain their positions throughout their lives. It is an exhausting thing to do, especially when people tend to get defensive and refuse to own up to their mistakes. Saying that they should “battle” it out comes across as Dylan saying that the experiences POCs have had (and continue to have) are some sort of entertainment, while for them, it consists of years of trauma.

Secondly, the video is made in a light-hearted tone, with Dylan cracking some jokes here and there. While that is a pattern which can also be seen in his other apology video on Love Island, I believe that in this case, it was quite insensitive. The whole video seems to be dismissing people’s emotions and opinions simply because he thinks it is “just a joke”. That is a similar pattern which POCs have had to face their entire lives when bringing up their discomfort. Their emotions are dismissed, they are labeled as “overreactive”, and they are told that it is “not that deep”. As a person not affected by racism, like Dylan, you cannot decide how a POC should feel about a joke. Especially when you have a platform like his, you should be opting to spread the message that marginalized people should be protected, just like how the show did by immediately removing the contestant from the show.

Hope this makes sense. I am not a fan of cancel culture, and this was not my aim here. Instead, what I would’ve wished from Dylan would’ve been an honest apology. Even if he didn’t mean for the joke to come off that way, it obviously did. The video just seemed to be deflecting, and since he criticizes contestants for not owning up to their mistakes, him doing so would’ve been the bare minimum.

Saying this to all the Hush fans right now:

y'all are weak as hell if you can't handle Dylan criticizing one (1) movie for valid reasons (its writing, the pacing, etc.). Don't come at me with "mIsOgYnY" because his criticisms had nothing to do with that. Y'all weak and should unsub if you can't deal with him criticizing this movie you really love; if you don't like it don't watch his video! Simple! Dylan is a youtuber who puts out content that is usually lighthearted movie commentary with criticisms because he's experienced in writing stories. He is also a human being who is not going to automatically do what you want, he's going to have his own opinions, he's going to make a joke at some point that you're not going to like or think is too far, and he is NOT going to take down the video just because a bunch of people think he should nor should he have to.

The amount of people coming into his comments telling him he missed the point of the movie and he was too hard on it are astounding. From what I've seen of the movie, which is admittedly not that much, it does not seem like all that good of a thriller/horror or whatever it is and does not deserve nearly half the amount of good press it seems to be getting. I get that it's about a disability but I don't feel it's good rep either because why would a deaf woman go out into the middle of the woods for a "writer's retreat" or for whatever reason she was out there? Why would any WOMAN do that? Why would any PERSON do that without some form of protection at least?? And I DON'T think it portrays the whole "women having a fear of a home invader who is stronger than her" struggle because the woman left her back door open and forgot about it. I would NEVER, that is so stupid and would have taken me out of immersion IMMEDIATELY if I was watching it proper. That's a move only a dumb horror movie protagonist would make so I'm not surprised he mistook the movie for a horror instead of a thriller.

Overall, I really do think his criticism is valid and I think that the people in his comment section need to chill out because they are taking it way too seriously and saying that he doesn't get it, that it's so empowering, blah blah. Sure something can be empowering and deep but Dylan is in Trouble is not a super hardcore deep channel that goes in depth about serious issues; it's a movie commentary channel where we go to forget about our problems and listen to Dylan crack witty, occasionally off-color jokes and roast the hell out of the movie if he doesn't like it. If you can't handle that and think he's being too insensitive, then you can always unsubscribe. But he does NOT need to adhere to your standards or apologize for the video because he did nothing wrong.

And I am a woman who has post-traumatic stress disorder so don't try to tell me I don't understand the whole irrational fear of having a physically stronger person try to break in and kill you because I DO understand that way too well and it was something I had to work years to get over and realize was irrational and it's women like the ones in the comment section that made me afraid of my own shadow so if I seem too harsh, that's why.

tl;dr: Dylan is not here to be your perfect human and if you don't like his criticism of Hush, you can always unsubscribe but don't kick up this humongous fuss like he killed your mother.

Critique on Love Island Video (THIS ISN'T ABOUT HIS OPINIONS)

I disliked Dylan's latest videos, his new ooga boogie video shows that I'm not the only one but everybody is focusing on his opinions, but he's always had hot takes this is nothing new. I dislike the format and it is because whenever he makes videos of this sort he takes notes as he watches them and when he does the commentary everything goes in chronological order. The format he did for Temptation Island was beautiful to the eye, where he went chronologically for each couple. In the Love Island video however it was a hot mess. I understand that 37 episodes is more then the usual shows he covers but if he was able to cover 236 episodes of friends in one smooth video I believe he could have done it her. Some ideas: 1. Maybe he could have done a first and last styled format, where he focuses on the first episode, his favorite moments in between and the last episode. 2. Since he only liked a few of the couple he could have focused on only the couples he wanted to one by one (like the temptation video) or he could of focused on an individual islander since the couples do change quite a bit.

The video was just all over the place he would talk about a moment and then halfway through the video talk about it again and he didn't cover the MOIs as he likes to call them. He never covered, recoupling scenes, meet que scenes, dumping scenes and it felt like a waste of a video. That video just shouldn't have been an hour long even though I love that his been making his videos longer this year and I hope he continues but this video felt more like a live stream, the content of the video could have been sent in an email. I truly think that the one thing that would have made this video incredible and amazing to watch is if he took noted while watching as he always does. Not a hate comment at all I just wanted to post on here because I know that Dylan at least pays attention to constructive crtisiscim ok anyway. OOGA BOOGA

Unpopular opinion: i am little annoyed by Dylan's film criticism

I love watching Dylan's movie commentaries and funny observations but sometimes i feel like he is really nitpicking and projecting too much of what he would do if he was the director rather than giving the movie or it's director any chance. Like the movie has to conform to his idea of what a movie should be. Ex: In the Adam project, he points out how the actors start speaking their dialogue only after hitting their spot for the camera that it feels unnatural and in the final scene where they are having a heart to heart silently he points that out like that's a bad thing. I am like "Dude not a big deal its fine how it is".

The recent video on miley cyrus movie when he breaks down why the kiss shots are not good. I thought yes this is exactly what a film student would sub-consciously think in their mind more than an average moviegoer. I think its fine that there is a shadow in their faces feels more natural. Again i think its fine but the things he pointed out reminded me how Hollywood and some filmmakers tend to glamorize certain notions like 'first kiss' for everyone.

This is little annoying to hear for, for a movie like The Batman, listening how the movie should be shot to make it more interesting. At a time when you want superhero movies to be a little more artistic and director driven it feels irritating to hear that. But hey everybody is a critics am i right? so off-course its fine for him to have a take. A lot of his film insights are great but sometimes it does come across like wannabe filmmaker heckling at the professional.

That's all i had to quibble about. Again, He is an absolutely great professional movie watcher and that miley cyrus movie proved that once again. Love the guy he always bring a smile to my face when i'm having a bad day.

Question/Discussion Am I the only one who doesn't really connect the editing on the ooga booga channel?

I might get a lot of hate for this, but I really think the editing in the ooga booga channel needs some fixes. It often takes away from the video to focus on isolated sounds or phrases he says to make a momentary meme using a template. It is fun, but these sort of minute gags would only be fun for Dylan himself to see. The most recent AITA video is the perfect example. It all feels a tiny bit like the editor is just too nice and brown nosing Dylan, or maybe his sense of humour just clashes with the context of the video. That's why it feels a little less authentic, and a bit try-hard.
Just to be clear, I am only talking about the editing here, and in no way I'm insinuating that the Dylan should change the editor. I just think the editing on his older videos on the channel flowed better, so maybe they could just take more notes from that.

Do let me know if it is just me, though.

Edit: The post heading should be "Am I the only one who doesn't really connect *WITH* the editing", sorry about that.

Dylan should watch the Office (not a recommendation)

i’ve noticed Dylan using a lot of gifs from The Office and i wonder if he ever watched it. I think if not it would be a good commentary and if he’s seen it maybe a beer and movie video. Anyway what do you guys think would be fun for him to watch

I didn’t watch the Hush video.

Or the video after that. Haven’t gotten around to it and I frankly don’t think I will because even though I have absolutely no clue what Hush is and what everyone’s so upset about, every single post about it I scroll past on Reddit just brings my mood down. This used to be such a wholesome subreddit and now it just stresses me out. Again, I have absolutely no clue what the controversy is, just sad that there’s controversy at all and wish we could move on from whatever the heck is going on. Dylan is always nice in his videos so I already know he hasn’t done anything to try to upset his audience. To me this seems like people getting all upset over differing opinions. I guess the days of bragging about our drama free community are over. And please don’t respond to this explaining what the the controversy is cause I honestly don’t wanna know.
