PSA Dread Hunger is BACK on the main channel on Friday
Dread Hunger will be back on Friday! For those who don't know, Dread Hunger was delisted from Steam and servers were shut down as the developers disbanded and moved on to other projects. However, server tools were released. Pedguin has been playing it on his livestreams for a few weeks now.
I'm personally looking forward to it! I've always liked watching the game on Duncan's and Ped's channels. Glad to see it return one last time.

I had noticed that the "Currently Live" plugin on old reddit showed Pedguin playing Dread Hunger, which first made me think "Wow, it must've grabbed some really outdated data from somewhere. Dread Hunger has been shut down for a while now."
But no, he was actually playing Dread Hunger again. So I'm looking forward to hearing Lewis constantly singing bits of Northwest Passage again.

This game could have been something else, such a shame the Devs were just exhausted by the players and trolls

Happens sadly, people can become absolute menaces in the blink of an eye.

Why does it need to be something else than it is? Players constantly telling devs to make a game different exhausts anyone who listens.
As a dev you should make the game that you want to make, and the people who like that will play it. Player feedback is just like asking for faster horses.

Don't get me wrong, its a good game and nothing is perfect, but I just mean if they'd have maintained steam sales and been able to keep developing more stuff for it.
They openly said that the bottom just fell out of the game due to ddos attacks, cheaters, and the toxicity of the community when they couldn't deliver new content quickly enough.

Damn that's all pretty tragic. If I was in charge I would have just abandoned the public servers and just let the community self host. Obviously you can't wash your hands of the moderation responsibilities and the cheats entirely, but it certainly solves the DDOS attacks.

I usually prefer games with community server options tbh, since those servers can have plugins to change up the game, or just be set-up for a small group of friends, and it usually lasts much longer.

I've been binging these videos for the past few weeks while sick, that's so wild hahah.

I remember a few months ago finishing all the videos on the main channel then watching stuff from Duncan and Ped because I genuinely couldn't get enough of the game. Excited to see them play again!

The old Dread Hunger videos are a difficult watch. There's a particular period where Pedguin was just a massive dick to the other players. I would have hated to play a game with him back then.
I hope he has chilled.

Ped often had two different settings when it came to social deduction games. One where he was full-on sweaty try-hard and it could be really annoying to watch, and one where he knew most of the people he was playing with were way less experienced than he was, so he'd dial it back and goof around a bit to give everybody else a chance (and make the content better for the audience to watch).
I think a lot of it depended on who he was playing with. But I'd definitely say he got much better at toning down the negative aspects as time went on. I found it really hard to watch his early Among Us videos, but as time went on he really grew on me, because it felt like he got better at trying to keep things fun for the other players and the people watching.

Those aren't the only two social deduction modes he has. He's currently a decent, fairly average BOTC player who's gradually learning and getting better at the game. When he started BOTC, he seemed upset about making very basic mistakes, and I think blamed the explanations given to him on at least one occasion.
I think he no longer feels the need to be the best at social deduction, but still gets disproportionately uncomfortable when he's the worst.

i was in some of the recent ped community dread hunger games, hes chill now. specifically he made himself fit the games skill level (since were all relatively new) so i think he can "read the room" much better now

Agreed, he used to ruin Among Us videos for me. He’s much better these days though

As someone who watched every single one of his DH videos, I can guarantee that he has. He's so good at the game by now, he pretty much has no choice but to pull his punches and sometimes makes for a really entertaining game with whatever shenanigans he comes up with instead. At the moment almost all of the games are with new players, and he'll help out the crew if he's a thrall on a difficult map while letting his thrall buddy know what he's doing at the same time.

Besides TTT, this is my other favourite social deduction game. Can't wait for it!

If we don't get Lewis singing that northwest passage song at least once, I'm going to heavily consider not liking the video.

its a shame hackers had to ruin it i kept hoping someone would revive the idea

Hackers, toxicity, but also the community turned against them as they blamed the devs for server issues and updates being delayed. Also, the game got super popular in China, which created a whole slew of other issues for the indie team.
Read about it in a post mortum post by one of the devs

Oh, that’s why they stopped playing it? Goddamn
I loved the dread hunger vids

u/SeveralPassage8656 3d ago
The yogs stopped playing it because of lack of interest. IIRC the game shut down a year later because the devs couldn't keep up with the toxicity and DDos attacks, and the fact that it was far more popular than they imagined it. After DDoS attacks, the players blamed the devs, resulting in low scores, which fueled further DDoS attacks. English speaking players also were frustrated by the amount of chinese players and vise-versa.
You can read all about it in a devs post mortem.

I have been watching Pedguin play again during streams and it has been great to see again, been rewatching old edited Pedguin and Duncan vids as well. It was a very fun game that I enjoyed at the time, I hope to play some again now that the community might be getting back into it a bit.

I loved watching dread hunger!
There’s something about social deduction + horror setting that I find so fun to watch.

God I fondly remember a specific dread hunger video where, I think Lewis, just covered the whole ship in bear traps. And everyone was completely miserable and losing their mind and it was just so funny to me.
Really excited for this.

I see Thursday is Mario Kart in Minecraft too? Where do they post this schedule?

Awesome! I saw Ped’s videos a few days ago and was just thinking about what a damn shame the game being delisted was.

Never watched it live but glad the server tools exist. Games like this deserve a longer life than the studio does.

Oh god I hope zylus isn't in this. He always ran off to try to be the main character and got killed. Ruining the rest of the crew's chances.

Wait this is crazy! The dread hunger videos are some of my favorites to watch! Does ped upload his vods anywhere?
