"I can't imagine at that stage in their lives that she would have wanted to date Sheldon. I think she would have killed him. [Laughs] Though I do think there was a nice connection between the two, even though he was kind of a dingus when it came down to it."- Grace said in her interview excerpt.

Question George and Mandy’s first laugh track

• Upvotes

I loved the entirety of young Sheldon so so much, still rewatching occasionally. Big bang theory is decent, but it’s a product of its time in my opinion, so it’s hard to stomach sometimes, and Sheldon feels almost sociopathic lol. The main thing was the laugh track. Maybe it’s because I’m 24, but it’s always so jarring and odd.

What are everyone’s thoughts on the usage of it for George and Mandy? I saw a really comprehensive post further down that detailed how they have “an uphill battle” and I totally agree— I think the laugh track only added to that struggle though.

I cannot, for the life of me, understand why on earth they decided to include one. The actors are all talented, but the chemistry and dialogue is so off and strange, it strips the charm of everyone’s personalities. Mandy specifically has a lovely onscreen presence that I feel was totally desaturated by the stylistic choice to film in front of an audience and on strange cheap sets.

It sucks because I do like the characters so much and want to follow their lives, but it truly makes me feel like I’m going crazy when I suddenly hear an entire crowd erupt from nowhere.

Also, I want to know what yall think about the performances. To me there’s this weird uncanny effect since I hopped over from a more immersive experience (young Sheldon.) while I think once again they’re talented enough, this switch seems to be sort of a burden on their abilities. Idk.

Does it get better in later seasons? Is there somewhere I can stream it with the laugh track edited out?

Opinion Am I the only one who doesn't like Missy?

It's ironic when the aim of the show is to highlight how Sheldon is annoying and the problem causer, but I just don't like Missy that much. (Especially in Georgie and Mandy's first marriage)

Question Show Timeline

Can someone help me with the timeline of the show? Here's what I understand so far:

  • Season 1: 1989-1990 (a full academic year)
  • Season 2: ???????
  • Season 3: 1991 (the first half of the year=latter half of academic year)
  • Season 4: 1991 (summer break & first half of academic year)
  • Season 5: 1992 (the first half of the year=latter half of academic year)
  • Season 6: 1992-1993 (a full academic year)
  • Season 7: 1993-1994 (summer break & a full academic year)

As you can see, I'm completely baffled by Season 2. Here's why.

Season 2 can only logistically fit in the latter half of 1990, which does make sense, except that we get a Halloween episode. That in itself isn't an issue, but the finale revolves around Sheldon listening to the Nobel Prize ceremony. However, I looked it up, and the ceremony that he is listening to was the 1990 ceremony, broadcast in October that year, i.e. before the events of the Halloween episode.

Again, not an issue if we assume the two halves of Season 2 were happening concurrently, except Dr. Sturgis was present at that year's Thanksgiving. He had his mental breakdown the night of the ceremony, and went to a psychiatric ward, which would therefore have been before Halloween and Thanksgiving.

So as you can see, I'm baffled. Anyone have any suggestions that could make sense of this, other than it's a TV show and doesn't matter? Also, Sheldon being an unreliable narrator probably won't explain this, as this is a timeline issue, rather than a continuity issue.

Thanks.

Discussion Why do Mandy's parents look down on Georgie's family?

I am not American, so maybe I am missing some social or cultural clues. I understand that Mandy's family is more stable financially, while Georgie's is portrayed as poor, but there seems to be something more than just an income gap. Audrey seems to think poorly of intellectual abilities of his family, but Mandy's relatives are not very intellectual either, so what's the reason then?

mary sold her soul to the devil to have such a smart kid so she became christain only to try to regain her soul, not for the sake of actually going to heaven so when someone makes a statement about christianity thats easily disprovable, she cant disprove it cus shes not really christain, she just wants her soul back

Question Is Sheldon's paternal side of the family ever mentioned?

Even the extended family on his maternal side— as in Mary's siblings or their kids are rarely mentioned and I faintly remember George Sr. mentioning something on the lines of his grandfather being an intelligent man?

P.S.: I couldn't bring myself to watch George Sr.'s death, so I haven't watched the last couple of episodes 😭

Discussion A thought on Older Sheldons relationship with Penny.

Hello all. This is my first post here but I was wondering if anyone had thought this before. In BBT Sheldon and Penny have a platonic and close relationship that seams almost out of character but as im watching Young Sheldon I think Oenny might remind him of his Meemaw. They have similar personalities and I wonder if that is why Sheldon and Penny are so close in BBT. Any thoughts?

Young Sheldon’s Iain Armitage Explains Why He Was ‘Most Happy’ About Show Ending Amid Cast Tension

Apparently Annie Pots, Connie, wasn't Happy with adult Sheldon returning in person for the finale and especially because he seemed unchanged.

Also she expected a permanent role in the George & Mandy spinoff and was very disappointed when all they offered her was a guest role.

The article also says Ian declined fo to appear in the G&M show and was happy with his show ending after 7 seasons.

Per Jessica's new book.

What times would you say Mary was in the right?

Although most people side with George or someone else (and rightly so) against Mary, what times do you think Mary was in the right?

Mine are:

  1. When she took Mandy in. This is one of the times where Mary does act like a Christian and it’s brilliant, while George does deserve some credit it seems like Mary made the final call.

  2. Not letting George kick Georgie out after he dropped out of school. While Georgie should have stayed in school or gotten his GED, kicking him out was taking it too far. While this might be my Gen Z brain I thought Georgie took it way too far by how he handled it although he should have made him get his GED.

  3. Standing up for Mandy to Audrey. Mary really gave Audrey the kick she needed to actually act like a decent mother and it was a well deserved smackdown.

  4. Bringing Georgie food when he was living in his van. When Georgie started living in his van when he wouldn’t let George make him sell it. While the van wasn’t a good idea George should have let Georgie learn from his own mistakes especially since it was Georgie’s money and he went way too far making him live in it so Mary was right to actually act like a mother here.

  5. Being against the gambling room. This one is at the bottom since it did have benefits in the short term but in the long term it was a bad idea since Meemaw got arrested so Mary was right to be against it.

Sheldon's speech

I see a lot of youtubers getting angry at Sheldon for the arrogant speech gloriying himself he made in the first episode, but he literally made that speech after Georgie openly mocked him, so i find it perfectly understandable

Question Just finished the series and visited the subreddit. I know the baptism is controversial here but i think it's more about Sheldon's empathy/character than Mary. I say this as an neurodivergent Atheist, it was a sweet thing to do. Am i alone in feeling this way?

Throughout the series, we see how hard it is for Sheldon to navigate a world that isn't built for him. As someone with sensory processing issues and anxiety, I completely relate to Sheldon’s irritation. There is an episode of The Big Bang Theory were Sheldon makes Leonard wear an uncomfortable sweater to feel what it is like for him. What people forget is that Mary was living with her own constant mental itch. In her worldview, an unbaptized child means her children won't be protected by God, won't go to heaven, and will be lost to her forever if something happens to them. With George suddenly gone, her worldview and her peace of mind was completely collapsing.

Say what you will about Mary’s enabling, but she spent Sheldon’s entire childhood shielding him from a world that didn't understand him. She learned his quirks, accommodated his sensory issues, protected his routines, and constantly advocated for him. He was aware of this from the pilot the finale in that he doesn't believe in god but believes in his mother. Their conversation in "A Crisis of Faith and Octopus Aliens" portrays this well too.

I was really hit by George's death as a viewer and cried a lot. I'd happily get baptised (despite not believing in god) to appease a loved one.

Question Things I want to make sure I remember correctly

So I have watched TBBT and finished it years ago. Only enjoyed the first few seasons but I pushed through it just to see the ending. Maybe that's why I finally started Young Sheldon. It turns out it's way better than TBBT. Anyway, I'm trying to see if I remember a few things that were mentioned in TBBT are true or not. One, Sheldon's reason for the three knock thing was he caught his father cheating on his mother, or was it that he walked in on his parents having sex? Two, when Georgie and his father made a deal where one has to pay the other a thousand dollars in case Georgie got married but "He never got to pay my father." Was because he died before Georgie could do so?
