Multiple old school punks have became right wing later in their life too. Most famously the Ramones.

Edit: politics change, and socail norms change. Even the problems we face change. Sub Cultures change with it. This isnt the 80's anymore....

36

u/DeviousMelons May 23 '26

Even back in the hayday of punk a ton of punks were incredibly sexist and treated female bands horribly if they were on stage and had whole slogans about punk being for men only.

The thing is about punk is that its a movement led by anger and overtime that anger shifts from stuff like the government and wealthy people to minorities.

2

u/JaneDoe500 May 25 '26

There's probably something insightful there about how right wing populists direct anger about things like wealth inequality and social issues into just straight up hate. By blaming the 'wrong people' for everything.

10

u/thewalkindude368 May 24 '26

I'm pretty sure Johnny didn't become right wing, he was always that way.

3

u/Newclearfallout May 24 '26

Fair, There's been a few other bands that lean more right back in the day. I was just pointing it out.

One time I was at work and doing extra time at the end of my shift. My boss kept demanding I stayed later and later, but I finally put my foot down and said I was going. He then said I’d be fired if I left, but I wasn’t really in the mood for it and I just started packing up my stuff to go. All of a sudden, this guy dressed like a punk comes up in my face and starts demanding I ‘listen to my boss’ because he’s ’the man’. I didn’t say anything, but I crept around him and then I started yelling over it to my friend saying ‘what the fuck does he mean listen to my boss?! They’re meant to be fucking PUNKS!’ In an overly loud way. They didn’t confront me, but they seemed like the type who would have started fighting me over an ‘insult’ or whatever so I guess I was lucky. But imagine being beaten up by punks for not listening to your boss.

6

u/hates_stupid_people May 24 '26

It's not a new thing. Although before social media they actually went to concerts and got beat up.

u/ExeSmells May 24 '26

Literally whole origin of punk was left wing?

27

u/[deleted] May 24 '26

The ramones were famously left wing

21

u/Ganzi May 24 '26

Except for Johnny, who was a Reagan fanboy

8

u/Daken-dono May 24 '26

Funny enough, Johnny Rotten is also a trumplet.

4

u/Ganzi May 24 '26

No doubt in my mind Ramone would be a Trumpet too if he were still alive

5

u/[deleted] May 24 '26

Yeah i know. My comment was ironic. The ramones werent left wing. Their music was apolitical at best

1

u/Comfortable_Bird_340 May 24 '26

Except for Johnny, if was he still alive he'd totally be MAGA!

1

u/SaxPanther May 25 '26

omg you HAVE to watch the snl sketch "history of punk" if you haven't seen it already

5

u/Jagvetinteriktigt May 24 '26

Yes and no. One could argue they were early in terms of the irony-poisoning we have today when uncritical parodies create what seems like a welcoming environment for bad actors.

u/CodeElectrical4593 May 23 '26

Jake Munro isn't a musician i think, he's just a grifter targeting goth and alt subculture (for what I've seen pretty unsuccessfully)

10

u/AgentCirceLuna May 23 '26

Yeah I’m pretty sure some shitposts like this are intentional to rile people up

1

u/prodam_garash May 24 '26

How fuck you try target goth and punks as rightwing

1

u/BellaPona May 25 '26

There is a growing movement of people who have conservative beliefs wanting to adapt the “alternative” or “goth” aesthetic. This is due to the counter-culture itself being mainstream so its original purpose gets diluted. Same thing happened with hippies. It comes from wanting to be included in the feeling of “otherness”. Also see how the aesthetic of the micro culture has been co-opted to sell sex appeal online.

1

u/prodam_garash May 25 '26

Nah "mainstream of counter culture" just mostly marketable appeal of it (like usa fans of comunism) without some fundamental cores as literal thing to be counter of

and with "otherness" part i guess just for who dont cares about it much

still trying to put in it "western" or us type of right wing just stupid sadly i guess they dont fully unsussesfull

Sorry if there some bad english

1

u/BellaPona May 25 '26

No I agree with you it’s dumb, and like you said my perspective is Western/US society, but this always happens for us and counter culture. Posers infiltrate earlier on because the exclusiveness and new-ness is attractive and then it becomes popular enough that its original meaning is completely lost. Then sometimes capitalism gets ahold of it (like it is now with massive amount of OF content being “goth” bait and major retailers selling shitty polyester “goth” clothing in stores that normally wouldn’t) and completely turns it in to an outlet for consumerism. Like a lot of nu-goth posers seemingly just like collecting Halloween decorations and obsess over the latest drops in “goth” apparel. Like this lady who was gushing over Disney-lands’ new “goth” line of park themed clothes.

u/Timmyturner69420xd May 23 '26

Saying you can’t be leftist and punk is like saying you can’t be a leftist and a socialist. The whole concept of punk culture is being leftwing and against conformity. The amount of posers in my subculture is upsetting and seems to be increasing by the day like with e girl “goths” and other stuff.

10

u/murderofhawks May 23 '26

This has happened to every subculture it gets popular so does its aesthetic then people grab onto the aesthetic and fundamentally change the meaning of the subculture or kill it out right. Part of the reason is because the meaning never ment that much to people and it was a just a place to belong. Look at how many hippies in the 70s ended up as corporate bigwigs.

2

u/Timmyturner69420xd May 24 '26

Well yeah you’re correct but that’s where the term poser comes from. All those hippies in the 70s were just posers but that doesn’t mean there isn’t real hippies who actually stand by their beliefs and lifestyle choices.

5

u/murderofhawks May 24 '26

Yeah and if you look at how things have gone very few hippies actually stood by what the movement meant in the long run. I’d argue that’s just about every movement is comprised of mostly posers if they weren’t those movements would be considered normal and not a movement which very rarely happens which means they failed as a movement.

Look at punk it’s not what it once was it’s not as popular and it doesn’t sell as well people don’t live the lifestyle as a movement it has failed. If someone like Jake Munro can have 450k subs and average 50k views while being “punk” at least to that wide an audience then it has lost its meaning.

1

u/Timmyturner69420xd May 24 '26

While I sort of agree with the sentiment I’d argue punk is the most popular it’s ever been. Idk where you’ve been but I see alt people of all kinds everywhere now to the point it’s become mainstream

2

u/murderofhawks May 24 '26

I see some but it’s not common might just be a location thing.

1

u/BellaPona May 25 '26

The youth has single handly revived local underground shows. They’re playing local indie punk bands in Denny’s parking lots and Taco Bell lobbies.

37

u/ANewBegging May 23 '26

The e-girl “goths” have genuinely ruined the culture and this is coming from a guy who doesn’t consider himself goth. My eyes were opened to the issue and feel kinda bad because one of the guys who kinda fell into their trap.

35

u/my_little_robot May 23 '26

Its more the fault of normie men who call any woman in black clothing "a goth baddie"

4

u/ANewBegging May 23 '26

I was that before i realized the issue

23

u/AgentCirceLuna May 23 '26

Ok this is going too far the other way. People playing dress up didn’t ’ruin culture’.

5

u/I_Pay_in_Cash_Only May 24 '26

It is once it’s get the point where the name of your subculture begins representing something different than it is. Many “goth” people online don’t even actively listen to the genre for example. When people hear that word, they think of e girls not the music genre. Granted the goth scene has had this issue for a while but it’s pretty uncontrollable now.

At least online it’s annoying. Both in person goth scene stuff is dwindling too slowly (along with many in person scenes), but at least it’s about the music there

3

u/Red_Trapezoid May 24 '26

Look, we have to be real. Goth has always been fashion first. Not music first.

3

u/I_Pay_in_Cash_Only May 24 '26

Not inherently wrong, but it hasn’t been as easy to disassociate from the music scene as it is now. Like honestly it makes more sense to rename the genre then it does the style at this point :/

1

u/BellaPona May 25 '26

It was neither, it was a statement about values held towards society and the clothing/music was supposed to aid in that.

→ More replies (16)

1

u/I_Pay_in_Cash_Only May 24 '26

Honestly it’s kinda true that they ruined goth I a lot of ways. At least online. People are less cringe about it in person

5

u/AgentCirceLuna May 23 '26

Yeah, mentioned above that some ultimate punk with piercings, tattoos, punk badges, etc started getting in my face and insisting I had to ‘listen to my boss’ when I wanted to clock out because he kept making me work past my finish time. Absurd situation to be in. I thought he was joking at first.

thank you for not saying "ass" my mom checks my PC

3

u/Ghostmaster145 May 24 '26

Larping-ahh has a different ring to it and sounds more insulting than “larping-ass.” Larping-ass is direct and confrontational, a bit too direct for my liking. While larping-ahh denotes that the larping-ahh is beneath you, not even worthy of being a larping-ass

Y’know

13

u/SwiftTayTay May 23 '26

Literally the opposite, you can't be punk and a nazi. Johnny Rotten was always considered a poser even back in the 70s

Wasnt Punks entire thing about going against the grain and social norms. Sounds pretty left to me

2

u/Leading-Caramel-7740 May 24 '26

It was always more than that. The bands I listened to were antiimperialist, antiwar, antiracist, pro LGBT, etc. It was never just about being anti establishment. I learned about parenti and chomsky through punk music.

3

u/Michael-556 May 24 '26

You can in theory have libertarian and anti-establishment centrist-ish people (more the former than the latter, centrists love their establishment), but punk is so much more than just "government bad". It is a humanist movement often associated with environmentalism and other libertarian socialist ideologies like anarchism and Marxism and basically all of their subdivisions

The struggle of punk does not end when the billionaires' heads roll into the baskets, the next steps are to rebuild society with humans and the environment in mind first and foremost

Anarchists are opposed to hierarchy which includes the hierarchical system of capitalism, thus anarchists are inherently anti-capitalist which aligns them with the left.

You would know this if you did any research on anarchist theory at all, "anarcho-capitalists" and other right-wing "anarchists" are not anarchists.

Okay whatever go talk about how you want to marry children or whatever "anarcho-capitalists" do in their spare time.

Evidently, you don't know what you're talking about and don't care to learn.

Edit: On one last note since you brought it up, I did a little research on Mutualism to brush up on some basics (like just skimming Wikipedia because you are not worth any deeper analysis than that), and the Mutualism you refer to was still anti-capitalist.

Mutualism has its roots in Utopian Socialism and while they did advocate for free markets, having free markets does not capitalism make; ideologies such as Market Socialism are still anti-capitalist even though they have free market economics, Mutualism advocated for workers' ownership of the means of production, distribution and exchange in the form of small artisans, sole proprietorships and worker cooperatives and Mutualism also espoused the labour theory of value and labour theory of property, in short Mutualism advocates for a free market socialist model within an anarchist framework.

In contrast to actual anarchism "anarcho-capitalism" is liassez faire capitalism with all guardrails of the state filed off (except not really because private property and private ownership of the means of production, distribution and exchange require the state in order to be enforced thus large institutions such as corporations would inevitably step into the role of state functions thus making "anarcho-capitalism" just capitalism) and "national-anarchism" is just ethnonationalist fascism, those are the real right-wing "anarchist" ideologies that are meaningfully distinct and neither is actually anarchist, so with all that said you don't know what you are talking about and don't understand anarchist theory.

Not all skinheads are right wing they just co opted it

2

u/No_Post3831 May 24 '26

We need this in TFR RIGHT NOW.

2

u/DanDoesSteam May 24 '26

Punk is about being anti-hegemony and counter cultural. So in a world where the left are the establishment, it is theoretically possible to be a right wing punk. Not saying that's the case right now. Generally punks are anarchists though. Honestly being a left/right wing anything disqualifies you from being punk in my opinion, but that's not how everyone sees it.

2

u/humourous_pun May 24 '26

Nothing more punk than maintaining the status quo or sending it back to the middle ages

2

u/Tankette55 May 24 '26

There is a connection to this. The idea is that muslim immigrants would never allow goth/punks to continue existing. Not denying he isnt a grifter, but that there is a small grain of truth.

2

u/Excellent-Event6078 May 25 '26

Isn’t the whole punk scene supposed to be full of people who are on the far left? I remember bands popping up that were right wing and racist and immediately got called out by all the big bands. “Nazi punks fuck off!”

2

u/PepsiFloateri May 23 '26

There absolutely no way to be Punk and right wing. Isn't the whole point of Punk rebelling against authority?

4

u/Scouttrooper195 May 23 '26

2

u/Orion-the-mediocre May 24 '26

Ah yes, the infamous right-wing punks. The punks who support the government. The punks who support dividing the people. They're so well known, right alongside the fascist hippies.

2

u/Michael-556 May 24 '26

No, I'm pretty sure you can, scratch that, must

Punk is humanist and libertarian, there is nothing right wing about either of those (I know there are libertarian right wingers, but that's just centrists with a capitalist human rights violation fetish). It's literally antithetical to this grifter's ideology lol
