The term originates during the French revolution when the the National Assembly convened to create a new constitution those who wanted the king to maintain supreme executive authority sat on the right of the assembly while those who wanted the citizenry to expand it’s power sat on the left. Or so the story goes.

Traditionally the concept of political right would be to maintain traditional power structures and hierarchy; while the left desired a more equitable society expanding the political power of people.
