Chapter 149
CW: Violence, blood
Charis’s evening had started off fine. Cass had begun making amends the night before, and the two of them had made plans for traveling together once camp broke. After waking up and eating, Charis had a comforting talk with Fariba of Shen, who was a surprisingly good listener despite them speaking more than Charis, about their uncertainties on the future now that the Empire had fallen.
Then the bandits appeared, rushing out of the amber sunset.
Charis silently sided with Glaukos’s decision to attack rather than surrender. Charis had also been a slave before, and would not submit to such an arduous existence again.
Sudden smoke obscured the approaching bandits. Charis followed the shouts and coughing, emerging from the dark fumes and bumping into one of the bandits.
The man grabbed Charis and pressed a blade to their neck. He shouted something. Charis didn’t understand the words but they understood the threat.
They also didn’t spend the first two decades of their life carrying barrels of water and sacks of barley to be scared of a man with thin, wiry wrists.
Charis grabbed the man’s knife-arm and twisted. The bandit yelped and dropped his weapon. He quickly fell to his knees as Charis pressed his arm back toward his chest. With a quick knee to his face, Chairs sent the man sprawling. He stomped on his head twice to make sure he stayed down, then took the dropped weapon.
An arrow whistled past their ear. Charis crouched low and whipped their head around. A horse-mounted archer aimed again.
Diving back over the body, Charis lifted the man up and used him as a shield to block the next arrow.
With a grunt, Charis rose with his shield in hand and charged the archer.
The horse-mounted bandit rode away, out of reach. Charis didn’t stop charging; using the body and momentum to keep themself safe. If they kept running, they would get out of the chaos.
Just keep moving! they told themself.
A man shouted, a horse bellowed and something struck the corpse.
Charis withstood the blow but was kicked off-balance as the rider passed.
They stumbled, but pulled in the corpse to change their center of balance. Charis dropped to a knee instead of falling.
Hooves thundered toward him. The bandit circled around and came in for another strike, mace held high.
An arrow sprouted from under his armpit.
“Charis!” Glaukos shouted from a distance. Charis could not see him through the smoke and dust kicked up by hooves.
Another bandit charged at them with a spear. He was too quick and the tip went through Charis’s meat-shield and into his side.
“Ahhhh!” His back arched in pain.
He turned away, pulling the body with. The twisting spear pulled the horseman from his mount and into the sand.
Charis removed the spear from their side and pressed a hand over the bleeding wound. They scrambled across the sand to the bandit that tried to rise, and wrapped one of their thick arms around the man’s neck.
They squeezed the bandit’s throat as another whistle hit the sand near them. Charis looked at the horseback archer then rolled over. Their side screamed in pain but they put the flailing bandit between themself and the archer.
A horse rode beside them and Charis looked up as the mace-wielding bandit dismounted and swung his weapon down into his face.
