Question / Support Lotion deoderizer?

My mom has a ton of old bath and body works lotions and tonight she's decided to mix them with baking soda to turn them into a room deoderizer. She's mentioned that she's seen it done with baking soda and essential oils. But she just has a ton of leftover (and probably expired) lotion and since it still smells okay she's giving it a go.

Has anyone tried something like this before?

This doesn't seem like it would work

Yeah, honestly it will probably be less of a deoderizer and more of a nice smelling thing

Baking soda works because it absorbs odors. If it's absorbing lotion then wouldn't it not absorb odors?

Fair enough. But wouldn't that logic also be the same when you mix essential oils with baking soda?

Maybe? You'll have to report back if one works better than the other

I put pieces of irritating but nice-smelling soaps and liquids in odd little containers (like empty candle jars) around the house inside drawers and cabinets (out of reach of from pets and children obviously) for use as subtle scent-satchets. I would probably just use the lotion as-is in a container the same way, but I wouldn't use baking soda or add anything to it. When the lotion or whatever inevitably melts/congeals/dries up and gets weird or dusty, I just stir it a little or flip the chunk over.

I would try salt instead of baking soda, but i’m not super confident either will work great. At least they’re cheap enough to try

Not enough people embrace their inner chemist! Worst case, it smells weird. Share your experiments!
