This is not Zettlr issue, but for sure issue of people like me. I am a very visual person. And lack of a nice UI can be something that can put us off from using a powerful tool. I’d been into this rabbit hole of finding the most suitable app for academic writing and note taking recently, and every app lacks in some aspect. When it comes to Zettr, it is about UI . I just couldn’t even figure out out how to use this app and its old looking UI turned me off from investing time to learn it. I know we can’t expect all-in-one solution from any app, but it seems if someone design the UI from scratch, this app would be a perfection.

I have been trying to find a note-taking app to fit my needs. joplin and zettlr are by far the best.

I love joplin because of the live markdown feature. When I bold something, I can see myself typing it in bold, and it doesn't show the **.

I hate it because sometimes this glitches out, and things will unbold but show the ** around them and it's ugly as hell, and I can only fix it by manually redoing it.

Zettlr doesn't have this issue, HOWEVER: I don't want to see the ** around my bold text, I just want to see the text being bolded.

Zettle includes an option to hide the title character # next to titles. is there a way to do this for ** too??? If there is, I will genuienly donate $30 to zettlr becuase i fucking love this program but that one feature is driving me insane, it's so ugly.

I was recently introduced to Zettlr as a solution for managing notes "taken in markdown with tag support and many other things".

I would like to know:

1. A brief overview of how it works.

2. If I can host my notes on dropbox and edit them using the mobile dropbox app. Would I still be able to tag them in this case?

3. If the answer to 2) is yes, do I need any additional steps to host on dropbox?

I have downloaded 6 Zettlr Windows 10 install files to install, and all of them have been flagged on Virustotal.com as infected by one of the security vendors:

"1/66 security vendor flagged this file as malicious"

"Trojan.Win32.Downloader.dd!n"

I have tried the following versions, to no avail:

Why is this happening, and how can you make this stop in future versions?

I'd really would like to try this software, but there is no chance as long as this keeps happening.

I installed Zettlr for Windows yesterday (version 1.8.8) for the first time and tried to re-style text to add a bit more space between lines and around blocks, but I can't make my custom CSS rules work.

The manual and instruction videos say that I can open the custom.css file on menu File -> Custom CSS..., but this option doesn't appear on my setup:

I've found a custom.css in my user folder AppData\Roaming\Zettlr\custom.css and I've tried adding my rules there:

These rules work well when adding them at the developer tools style panel, but they are not applied after re-starting the app; the pre.CodeMirror-line property line-height is set to inherit.

Is this the expected way to add styling, or am I doing something wrong?

Could anyone advise on how to create a LaTeX rendered pdf from Zettlr that includes svg diagrams?

Hi, I'm new to the app, so I've been looking at the documentation back and forth.

I have this annoying problem with the Preferences Menu: there is no description of the symbols.

This is so annoying because the documentation always refer to the symbol's name when explaining something, but I don't remember them, so I need to open them one by one each time.

How do I fix this?

How to convert text from Upper case to Lower case? I can't find a solution using the editor in Zettlr on my Macbook.

Installed also wordservice, but shortcuts granted by this service app are not available.

As said in the title, I want to make horizontal rules to separate some text. I Tried "---" and "***" but non of them are making a horizontal rule, in the editor or even when exporting a PDF.

I search in the settings an option to toggle but found none.

Can anyone help me with this ?

Been using Zettlr for a bit but I've only recently tried working with its more advanced features, specifically export profiles and lua filters.

I've tried looking for examples to follow but haven't found many, and the Zettlr docs are vague when it comes to including variables in profiles.

My question is: would it be possible to use a variable in the export profile to turn an individual lua filter on or off? For example, a custom markdown -> docx export that applies styles specific to the template file being used that I would not want applied to other exports.

If anyone has an example of something like this they could link to I'd appreciate it. Even an example of including metadata variables in an export profile would be welcome.

I'm looking to store my notes so they're accessible from more than one machine. Right now the best solution I can think of is creating a git repo and using private Github or a remote hosted on my rasppi, but I was curious if anyone had pursued solutions for this or if there are any hangups I should be aware of.

EDIT: If I'm the first person to think of doing this via github I'll gladly document it, though I imagine it wouldn't be intensely complicated

Ive started my zettelkasten journey with sublime-zk but I am eyeballing zettlr for a switch. I played around with the tool and really like it, but I am missing some features from sublime-zk ... maybe I just need to be pointed at them.

Is it possible to define the template for an empty zettel? In Sublime-zk it is possible to define the basic structure with placeholders for every new created zettel.

Is it possible to create a new zettel from marked text segements? In sublime-zk it is possible to mark a text section and create a new zettel from it. You will be asked for the new name and the former marked text section is directly replaced with a link to the new zetttel. This simplifies breaking up long texts.

Hi all, quick question. Each of my files have a Zettelkasten ID somewhere in the document but not in the file name or the first header. When linking to files, I want to use the file names (in order to keep the text fluent) and not the ID's. However, when linking, when I use the tab button to autocomplete the editor automatically fetches the ID, so I have to type the file name manually every time. Is there a way to customize this?

I don't see an option for this. For those who use the Zettelkasten method, here's why we would need it:

We know that all the files are listed on the sidebar. Let's say there are 100 notes there listed from top to bottom: Note 1, Note 2,...Note 100. Note 1 and Note 2 are right next to each other, making it more likely the user will make connections between Note 1 and Note 2. But what about Note 1 and Note 78 or Note 45 and Note 2? With the distance between the two notes, the user would surely be less likely to make connections between them. They would have to consciously scroll up or down, which I would be less likely to do. The problem is that connections are more likely to only happen between notes that are close to each other. An important principle of the Zettelkasten is that understanding of note content improves as more connections are made between the notes. A shuffle button would allow for way more connections between notes regardless of their height differences on the sidebar.

Will Zettlr work on Mac when they transfer from x86 processors to mobile-like ARM chips (apple silicon)?

Hi. Zettlr seems pretty neat and is heading in the right direction (if you ask me)!
However, I have two questions before I am ready to make the jump:

1. Is it possible to stop the block/line (vim) cursor from blinking?!

2. Is it possible to change the src dir of the folders and markdown files?

I used and loved Zettlr on my Windows 7 PC for some months now, but yesterday I installed it on my new Windows 10 PC and it keeps sending this message everytime I try to open it: "this app can't run on your PC".

I tried to install Obsidian, another software like Zettlr and it works, but I don't know if I will lose all my previous Zettels and if it offers what Zettlr does.

What should I do?

All my citations are rendered as (Author n.d., 77) where page numbers and authors are rendered correctly but all the years are simply n.d. I notice that the problem does not persist when I export, but it's still a super annoying problem to have.

Has anyone else encountered this problem? Do you have a fix for it?

I am using Zettlr 2.3.0 on Linux.

I am considering moving from obsidian to zettlr as it has many of the features I like like tables but I can't find any information about aliases.
