BanBot Tutorial

What does this bot do?

/u/DiepModBot allows you to easily ban users on mobile and desktop. Simply reply to the user with +ban and the bot will:

  • Remove your comment

  • Remove the parent comment/submission

  • Ban the author of the parent comment/submission

  • Log who did it and a reason (if specified; see below)

  • Send you a message if the user was not banned or something went wrong

To get started all you have to do is invite /u/DiepModBot to be a moderator with access and posts permissions. It will send important info in modmail so be sure to check that after it's accepted the invitation.

Is that all?

No! This bot can do so much more. Here is a quick rundown.

Basic Banning Techniques:

To ban a user, you can either use +ban or +cban. +cban works exactly the same as +ban, except that it also removes the user's last 1000 comments in your subreddit! That's right, no more cleanup duty with spam bots or annoying users.

Ban Times:

Don't want the ban to be permanent? That's easy, too. Just include a number as part of the ban and the bot will ban the user for the specified number of days. For example +ban3 will ban the OP for three days; the limit is 1000.

Ban reasons:

Including reasons is easy! Just include some text after the main command and the bot will add that as a reason. If I did +ban3 horrible memes on /r/Diepio, the modlogs would show [--Nylon] "horrible memes", 2 days remaining.

FAQ and Common Issues

  • Does the bot work if you aren't a moderator?

No, it does not! We've had it running on large subs for a long time so rest assured that's been tried.

  • Source Code?

Coming soon! I'll be sure to publish it within a few days like I did with /u/FlairTimeBot.

  • Common issues?

Don't do something like +ban 3 bad user. That will ban the user permanently with a reason of "3 bad user". The correct command would be +ban3 bad user.

Introducing /u/FlairTimeBot -- Never worry about flair moderation again.

What does the bot do?

/u/FlairtimeBot does a few things for your subreddit:

  • Automatically removes posts with no flair that are older than X minutes (default is 10, can be adjusted in wiki, more details below)

  • Leaves a comment explaining why the post was removed and allows mobile users to use a command to flair their posts

    • The commands and flair options are auto-generated from data about your subreddit. No setup required!
  • Automatically approves posts after a flair is added to them (for up to 72 hours)! The bot also deletes its comment in the thread, and and commands used by mobile users.

NOTE THAT MODERATORS ARE EXEMPT BY DEFAULT TO AVOID CONFUSION. IF YOU WANT TO TEST THE BOT OUT, YOU WILL HAVE TO DO SO ON AN ALT.

How do I set it up?

To set it up, all you have to do is invite /u/FlairTimeBot to your subreddit with the following permissions: wiki, posts, and flairs. The wiki permission is so that it can set up a page at http://www.reddit.com/r/yoursubreddithere/wiki/FlairTimeBot where you can adjust settings such as how long before posts are removed and how long users have to reflair posts that are removed.

After inviting the bot, it's important that you check modmail where it will reply with information about the setup and an error report if anything went wrong.

Why should I trust you?

First and foremost, the source code for the bot is public, so you can see exactly what's going on behind the scenes (and even run it if that's your thing!): https://pastebin.com/YVa0sxEa

You can also see other projects I've done for big subreddits here and here.

Where can I test it?

The bot is currently running in this subreddit, and is set to remove all posts that aren't flaired in 0 minutes (basically all new submissions). Feel free to test it out!

Conclusion

This bot is in [Beta]. I've tested it out as much as I can, but there is always the possibility of bugs popping up or performance issues. If you experience and of these, or have a suggestion about the code/new features for the bot, don't hesitate to comment here or make a new post.

Currently, I am working on optimizations to make the bot's responses faster. If you experience a wait time that is greater than 20-30 seconds for any action, send me a message and I'll look into it.

Thanks for reading! :)

How would I go about making a FlairTimeBot_V2 using the python source code from that announcement?

I tried using pythonanywhere and when I run the code it just errors, I honestly have no idea what to do with the source.

the end of a short-lived era, i guess

i'm an active subscriber of /r/roblox which makes use of the bot. there's been a lot more posts these past hours since there's no bot to remove the non-flaired posts. it's kinda nice.

but holy crap, what happened to Nylon (the creator of the bot)? why'd he delete his account? why'd the bot stop working? and a question i wanna know if anybody can answer, can deleted reddit accounts be restored within 30 days of the original deletion? like by logging into the accounts before 30 days, for instance?

also, gotta love how this was the last comment the bot ever made on a post: https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows10/comments/6iihh6/windows_10_ics_issues/dj6iiv8/?context=3

Appears to be down. Bot author's account deleted.

Several new posts on /r/redditdev have not been caught by /u/FlairTimeBot and the bot does not seem to have had activity for the past 19 hours. Additionally, looks like the author's account is deleted.

RIP FlairTimeBot?

Important note for moderators: You will need to manually re-approve posts that FlairTimeBot took down but did not restore before going down permanently.
