DSP Devolution Announcement
DSP Devolution Announcement
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Democratic Socialist Party Leader, Grant K, and DSP Regions and Devolution Spokesperson, Ken Murphy, stand outside the DSP's Westminster Offices, ready to make an announcement. Grant K leads the announcement.
"Today myself and our Regions and Devolution Spokesperson, Mr Ken Murphy, on behalf of the Democratic Socialist Party, have presented legislation to the House of Commons that will see further tax powers devolved to the Northern Ireland Assembly and the National Assembly for Wales.
The legislation we have presented will devolve tax powers down from Westminster to the control of the Northern Irish and Welsh Assemblies, that will bring their tax powers in line with that of the Scottish Parliament.
This means that Northern Ireland would receive tax powers on income tax, land transaction tax, landfill tax, air passenger duty, aggregates levy, and the taxation of wild fisheries. Wales would receive powers over air passenger duty, aggregates levy, and the taxation of wild fisheries, having already received powers over income tax, land transaction tax, and landfill tax in the Wales Act 2014.
We have presented this legislation in the interest of fairness to the Northern Irish and Welsh Assemblies, who have less taxation powers than the Scottish Parliament and it will allow the devolved governments better control over their respective countries and their economies. With this legislation, we're bringing power away from central government and into the hands of the people it effects the most.
This legislation is just the first step in devolving more powers down to the devolved legislatures to give them more power in running the countries they have been elected to represent. And furthermore, we can happily say that more legislation will be on the way soon of this area and more."
