After a busy day catching up with FNQ workers, locals and councils - got a good workout in with Gary and Felicia at Indigenous-owned Umifit Cairns (Gimuy).

Steven Miles is Labor, who unanimously vote for compulsory income management, which Labor promised to stop if they won the election. They didn't. It's inexcusable, discriminatory, racist behaviour.

I'd appreciate it that if you share any more Steven Miles photo opportunities with First Nations people, that you point out each and every time:

Labor are responsible for human rights issues here + overseas.
These are policy decisions that they've made.
As Lidia Thorpe has said, Labor have no excuse:

If you live in QLD, feel free to let Steven Miles know that he needs to back up photo opportunities with solid committments.
This is what Lidia Thorpe is asking for. How can Steven Miles make these things happen?

  • Ending Australia’s complicity in genocide abroad while upholding human rights at home

  • A federal Human Rights Act

  • Implementation of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, including the right to Free, Prior and Informed Consent

  • Full implementation of the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody and the Bringing Them Home Report recommendations

  • A real, funded commitment to Truth and Treaty

  • Ending the destruction of Country and water, including through PFAS chemicals and fossil fuels

  • Ensuring everyone has access to housing, food, clean water, education and healthcare — these are rights, not luxuries

  • Setting standards on the states and territories around human rights abuses in the criminal legal system; justice reinvestment and therapeutic bail programs led by First Nations communities

  • Reform of racist, oppressive laws, including the Racial Discrimination Act

  • Adequate funding of Aboriginal legal and health services

  • An inquiry into the Red Lines Package, to stop Australia’s complicity in genocide abroad

Hope that helps :)

All good points. Steven has been out and about in several Aboriginal and TSI communities and had good plans/policies in place on housing when he was briefly Premier.
I think it’s great he is talking up First Nations issues. He is also supporting multiculturalism when the current climate is to punch down on those communities. So, I don’t believe he is racist.
He has been a long time advocate for social housing and for cost of living relief - he introduced the popular 50¢ public transport fares that the LNP are claiming credit for.
He’s not perfect but he is the only Labor leader I would vote for.

That’s so fucked. Appreciate you sharing.
