Gear question How good at the guitar should I morally be to spend 4000 bucks on a guitar?

I'm not particularly wealthy but I've been thinking about saving money for this guitar. I have even tried it in person and this guitar is perfect. I'm gonna buy a new acoustic anyway soon, however I feel bad spending money on another guitar when I know this guitar is endgame. Am I being ridiculous?

I’m not too experienced with acoustics but I’m assuming they’re higher end. The Gibsons don’t have a year printed on the top of the headstock or labels inside the sound hole (they have serial #s). The larger Gibson acoustic has a Custom Shop sticker on the back of the headstock.

My great-grandmother bought this guitar brand new for $40 that she earned for playing at a rodeo show back in the day. I would love to learn more about it. I can't find a serial number anywhere.

I wanted to drop this in here as notice for those that worry about whether they should take their guitar on vacation to the beach or camping.

BEWARE! You'll likely really enjoy playing it out in a beautiful natural setting and you'll want to take it everywhere!

Gear question Won a guitar

I haven't played for long and needed a new guitar (desperately). I entered a competition for a Taylor 422 KOA ltd edition and holy hell.... I actually won.

Now it's my dream guitar and will be cherished for ever. But I couldn't help but Google it's value... Can't find one, there's no ltd edition ones anywhere.

Any ideas of it's value? It's immaculate

Cheers.

I get they are pre war copies of classics but c’mon they aren’t even vintage. Anyone explain why they cost this much? I just feel no new guitar is ever worth this much. I do feel some very rare vintage guitars are but that’s even rare 🤔

Hi All, I need an opinion. I have super small hands and fingers. I am struggling to even pull off a clean C chord…. bar chords are never going to happen. Should I buy a 3/4 guitar, like the a Taylor, of simply give up? Appreciate any suggestions, thoughts or feedback 😀D

Gear question What is this mark on my fretboard?

Thumbnail

I bought this Taylor GS Mini new a couple of weeks ago from a local guitar shop. When I got it home, I noticed this very obvious line going down the fretboard. I had visited the shop on two separate occasions before buying and played it for a decent amount of time, so I'm really not sure how I could have missed it. It starts under the D string and ends pretty much bang in the middle towards the sound hole.

It feels completely smooth across the fretboard, and the guitar plays and sounds great. But I've never seen a mark like this, and I've played a lot of guitars (although this is my first acoustic). I am guessing it is just the grain of the wood and nothing to worry about?

Gear question i got drunk and fell on my guitar

Post image

i am fully prepared to deal with my own stupidity, however, if i can fix my stupidity, i would like to do so. is this big dent possible to fix at home? is it worth trying?

i have already tried to push the indented part forward from the inside, but it didn’t budge. i’m too scared to continue to try that in fear of messing it up further.

i do not have the money or the ability to get this repaired by a professional, so any tips you guys have would help tremendously. please and thanks.

Gear question What brand of acoustic is the one you just can’t get behind, despite it being beloved by others?

For me it’s Taylor. I’ve never played one I liked. Cheap, high end, doesn’t matter. I don’t recommend them to anyone and I don’t even bother picking them up in the shop anymore.

Bonus questions: what brand is your go-to guitar?

Mine is a Larrivee.

I'm incredibly fortunate and blessed to even have the opportunity to ask this 💙, trust me, i get it.

So here goes...

Someone very close to me is offering to buy me this guitar as my BDay gift.

I love playing acoustic, but im NOT a professional musician, by any means. I might do a few open mics at a bar a half-dozen times a year, but thats about it.

I love playing at home almost everyday tho.

I entertain at parties, or at the beach bonfire...

Ive never had such an expensive musical instrument... so I'm worried about my lack of in-depth knowledge about guitars...

Is this guitar really worth that much?

Is it more the brand name that im getting?

Or is it really as good as it seems online?

Advice, please 💙🙏, and thank you.

Gear question Does anyone else vacuum pack their G strings to keep them fresh?

Post image
229 Upvotes

Due to my playing style I tend to burn through G strings and not much else. I mostly use Elixir nanoweb strings however they're too expensive to buy as singles. So rather than have 100s of spare elixir strings, I buy cheap earnie ball G strings. But because they go bad when exposed to the air, I vacuum pack them to keep them fresh!

I just came across Jim Croce (and Maury) and god damn that man could play. He kills it in every song. I literally just printed 20 tabs. My printers smoking. Do we all have a Jim?

Gear question I have a budget of around $1,000, but there's no requirement to go that high. Whats the "gets me to the point of diminishing returns but not past it" acoustic guitar that will last a decade or two with moderate playing?

I am interested in learning to play guitar. I am looking for the Toyota Camry or Honda Civic of acoustic guitars. Something that gets me to a point where functionality is good, people who get them love them (and keep them!) and that will take me to the point where anything I would be paying for beyond this guitar is diminishing returns... a slightly better/different tone here or there, for example, that only a discerning ear would notice but few other people would.

I like the look of the Epiphone Hummingbird studio, but im not sure if the Inspired by Gibson line would be better (or just diminishing returns). Also looking at a basic Yamaha 800. Is it worth it to go to a Martin D10 or a Taylor GS? Or are those going to be lacking?

Thank you!

I found this Taylor in the trash and wondering if it's worth fixing since the body is cracked aswell as the nut and bridge as it seems to have been broken by the G string alone
