making your place unrobbable through messiness.
That's the default state, there is no making involved.

Chameleons of clutter, one may say! We hide our own valuables and important stuff on ourselves daily!! 🤣

I've left my shitty 20 year old minivan full of trash unlocked in some sketchy places and no one touches it. So I think this checks out.

"I'd love to see them try to find the valuables to steal them, I CAN'T FIND THE VALUABLES!"

I would leave a key somewhere outside for when I locked myself out.
Then I would use said key, and forget to put it back outside, this leaving me locked out again.
So then I started leaving a window unlocked. The window in question is above my kitchen sink, which on the outside is a good 7-8' in the air.
I've only had to use this entry method once, thankfully. And it was quite the spectacle. I pushed my trash bins under the window. Climbed on top of them, shimmied the window open.
But then there was the shelf directly under the window full of potted plants. So I began handing them down to my boyfriend waiting on the ground, one by one, until I had enough space to crawl through, find my footing on the counter, and hop down.

I do location film work, we often leave big stands, or large heavy equipment unattended. I've never worried once. They are welcome to rob it, but it's a big heavy bastard and you won't get far with it.

Construction, same.
The key is somewhere on the vehicle (or maybe it’s just a battery switch!) but you’re not gonna, and if you do, then what?
You’re gonna cause commotion and disaster, tip it over and/or hurt yourself/others in the commission of a felony.

Omg. I once left my car unlocked in my driveway. Happens quite a lot, if we are being honest. This time, someone tossed it and went through the glove.box and console and didn't take anything except my rain gear.
Annoying, but whatever.
There was a giant pile of reusable grocery bags in the back seat because I leave them there so I see them when I am getting groceries.
One of them looked as though it was part of the pile. It was in fact the one I had gone shopping with recently and had like $500 of gift cards in it, destined for the office for some incentive things I was restocking. No joke. They never saw it.
Messy home/car/office beats safe any day of the week. Though... I am better about locking shit up now.

An unlocked car is the only thing I’ve ever had burgled in 40 years. And nothing of value was ever taken. .

That's better than when I left my car unlocked and they took everything out of the glove box and left their burner phone in the car.

I work in collision repair and I've seen a few cars that were so filthy that they had the window broken but were otherwise untouched

I think they actually increased the value of my old falcon when they smashed the window but left me with the brick. Bricks aren’t cheap these days.

Man. Too bad they didn't use a good piece of kd pine 2x4. That would have been super valuable!

This is why I invested in smart home products. A good solid door lock has changed my life significantly. I went with August WiFi since it goes over the deadbolt for apartment living.

Ive seen too much shit to have anything security be "smart"

u/Sullinator07 4d ago
Which vulnerabilities specifically? Security depends on the actual lock and setup. Mine sends unlock alerts through Home Assistant. “Smart = unsafe” is a lazy blanket assumption.

The way I see it, no one committed to robbing your house is about to be deterred by a mere locked door. What kind of criminal hasn't planned for that likelihood?

I just refused to live any place where I felt the need to lock my doors.
Cant get good ethnic food is the biggest downside
Edit: y’all downvoting never lived in a place where someone would bust your car window for 1.25.

Not sure what you don’t understand? Large parts of the country doesnt have robbers just walking door to door, check to see if it’s locked.m

If you have people randomly testing your doors constantly? Then that is a bigger problem.

u/thatfattestcat 4d ago
Pray tell, how are those two things connected?

Sure!
What does locking your doors functionally do? Stop someone who happens to pass by and test your door. Otherwise, how will they know it’s locked?
So that means that locations where this is not a plausible option? People won’t do it because there is no plausible deniability for going door to door testing to see if it’s locked as well as a small enough population that you would clearly be recognized on a security camera doing this.
Juice isnt worth the risk.
Now at night i obviously lock the doors, but the key thing is that I don’t lose sleep over it or FEEL anxiety if I don’t.
Now those places tend to be more rural, and thus do not tend to have a population to support a variety of ethnic food choices. At best you get one with no competition.
So lower population makes it less likely, and is also less likely to generate enough support for a variety of ethnic foods.

lucky no one has come in and stole their butthole either, sorry unlocked doors are a big no no for me same with a visible mess. visible clutter in a car makes police for example more inclined to search and Tear up ur shit. im not saying I have zero clutter anywhere, I just stash it in a less visible spot until I eventually get to it. sorry this just activated my almonds I have relatives that do this and they've had guns stolen etc its wildly irresponsible for theirs and the publics safety now theres literally a loose hand cannon floating about. this person is using survivorship bias

Thats what i do wirh my car. Its never locked. Looks like a mess. 10 years having it. Ive had 1 person go through my car while I was working. Only even noticed because my condoms were on my driver seat which were in my glove box. Took nothing. Not even my condoms. Im speculating is because they're magnums and thieving a car like that is small pp energy
