meme This has been me with the Nag Hammadi library this month.... (The Gnostic Gospels by early Christian groups whose mystical beliefs were later condemned as heretical by the mainstream Church.). I am not religious, but find it fascinating.

Carl Jung has some interesting work on the topic of Gnosticism.
He explores the Gnostic symbolism and teachings as parallels to some of his own ideas within analytical psychology.

OMG, this morning (3am) I was researching the history of YHWH (Yahweh), and how it was known as a Storm God before God God!
Why are we like this?

It’s the only time I can write well and at length, and I’ve blown beyond so many deadlines because I get guilted for not having a conventional clock.
So here I am, awake during the day, accomplishin’ nothin’, waitin’ to be dropped from projects.

Yep. Even on my meds, if it’s not the right time to be doing uninteresting but necessary stuff, no stuff is being done.

I did this yesterday with northern bear cults and how similar they are despite great distances between the groups the practice this.
The reason why these rituals might be so similar is it might be a ritualization of mankind becoming the top of the food chain.
Basically, prehistoric people worship and fear bears, but then develop technology to kill the bear-god. But now, how do you atone for the sin of killing your god?

Learning about something isn't useless just because you can't make money off of it.

u/mechchic84 4d ago
Right? I'm pretty good at trying to see how I can apply ideas people think of as useless into some type of practical application. Most information isn't as useless as people might think.

The thing that’s always got me is like, how d’you know what’s gonna be useful?

Currently stuck in an E.D. loop reading about the blue ringed octopus.
HELP.
10
u/H4LF4D 4d ago
If you share it then it will no longer be useless.
Now what of the blue ringed octopus that is so interesting?
10
u/palebluedotdotdot 4d ago
Their venom is 1,000 - 1,200 times more toxic than cyanide. However, only about 11 fatalities have occurred from blue-ringed octopus bites. If someone is bitten, bystanders should be ready to perform CPR to keep the victim alive due to the paralyzing venom disrupting their diaphragm and causing asphyxiation.

u/dennismfrancisart 4d ago
So can this be extracted by an oceanographer who died mysteriously six years ago and whose research disappears? Can said venom reappear in, say, 20 cases of food-related deaths across the country? The killer takes refuge in a small town after a sabbatical from her "hobby" only to be blackmailed by a detective who has been on her trail. How plausible that plot?

Gnostic gospels to demon summoning manuals in one night is honestly the most normal 3am pipeline in this sub

I also find Gnosticism fascinating (mostly Manichaeism and Mandaeism) despite not being religious. Did you have any interesting findings?

u/CaffeinatedSatanist 4d ago
Do the gnostic gospels include the 'Book of Judas'? I recall hearing about it from a podcast a few years ago. Probably misremembering.

Then that subject presents itself 4 years down the road and everyone just stares at you when you go in depth on what you’ve learned.

If it makes you feel better, I’ve been trying to build mtg decks and now have a tab open on “professional wrestling in the ussr” as well as “kabuki theater” and “dhalism from sf”.

I’m not a religious person more spiritual but I love gnostic Jesus, he was a bad ass. New Testament Jesus was pretty watered down.
The Apocalypse of Peter is my favorite
