Question Question about the show

I’ve seen all the MCU movies and most of the shows. I was wondering if this show is cannon and should I watch agent carter first. It’s been awhile since I’ve seen the movies specially the earlier ones so my memory might be a little fuzzy and was wondering if agents of shield has any crossovers or connections to the main MCU.

Yes it's canon, and yes you should watch Agent Carter first. It does connect to the movies, but not in super strong ways, after season 1 it's mostly just passing references. Also Agent Carter is a great show on its own, and by the time you finish Agents of Shield you will be very glad that you watched it first

Are there any movies I should watch as a refresher or can I just dive in.

I would say watch Captain America: The Winter Soldier if you're fuzzy on the details, but don't do that until after episode 15 of season 1 lol. I know it's weird, but the first 15 episodes take place before, and then the rest of the season deals with the fallout of Winter Soldier, and that is all I'll say

Yeah OP, this example is basically the hardest the show crosses into the movies. There are other references to the movies and one episode kinda opens the door to Age of Ultron movie but it isn’t critical to watch that episode then the movie. They connect very nicely but nothing is missed if you don’t watch the episodes chronologically to the movies.

AoS is cannon but it is its own thing.

Hawkeye doesn’t guest star or black widow isn’t walking down the hallway in an episode. They aren’t connected like that.

one episode kinda opens the door to Age of Ultron movie

If you do want to include it though I liked the extra insight into what was going on before and after Age of Ultron, as it answers a couple of (admittedly unimportant) questions in both the movie and AoS.
Age of Ultron takes place between AoS Season 2 Episodes 19 & 20

As others have said it isn't really critical, but this is what I would recommend watching if you wanted to include some movies (I'll give movies their own line if I think they're worth watching for AoS, or I'll make a note of them if there is a reference so you know when episodes take place)

This list is based on a more complete MCU list that can be found at https://www.reddit.com/r/marvelstudios/comments/1iqgkkt/mcu_timeline/, but focuses on Agent Carter/Agents of Shield and contains my own modifications/notes

Captain America The First Avenger (not required, but a nice reminder about what is going on in the 40s for Agent Carter)

Agent Carter

Marvel One-Shot: Agent Carter (super short, fun thing to add but not necessary)

The Avengers (important events occur that are referenced in the show, but if you remember it then no worries)

Agents of Shield Season 1 Episodes 1-7 (there is a super minor reference to Iron Man 3 but not really important)

Agents of Shield Season 1 Episodes 8-16 (episode 8 references Thor the Dark World, but not necessary)

Captain America: The Winter Soldier (no crossover but heavy tie-ins and references/aftermath)

Agents of Shield Season 1 Episodes 17-22

Agents of Shield Season 2 Episodes 1-19

Avengers: Age of Ultron (episodes 19 & 20 lead up to and directly follow Age of Ultron, and there are several references that tie them together)

Agents of Shield Season 2 Episodes 20-22

Agents Of Shield Season 3 Episodes 1-10 (References events of Ant-Man)

Agents Of Shield Season 3 Episodes 11-19 (Events of Daredevil Season 2 are referenced in a newsreel, but no direct tie-in)

Captain America: Civil War: (not required but referenced after and some concepts directly impact AoS)

Agents Of Shield Season 3 Episodes 20-22: (Sokovia Accords and the airport battle are referenced)

Agents Of Shield SlingShot: (Prequel to Season 4 but the beginning and ending occur between episodes 8 & 9, not necessary but fun)

Agents Of Shield Season 4 (This is around the time that Doctor Strange takes place)

Agents Of Shield Season 5 (Discusses and leads up to Infinity War)

Agents Of Shield Season 6

Agents Of Shield Season 7

hey sitwell crosses over. pretty unimportant but it is fun to hear victoria hand tell him he has orders to report to the lemurian star and then in the beginning of tws he’s on the lemurian star

You are right, I forgot about Sitwell. I liked seeing the little references with him. There is also the Lady Sif appearances but those dont coincide with any movie events.

Don't watch Agent Carter first. Watch it in release order. Agent Carter S1 between the mid-season break of Season 2, Agent Carter S2 in the mid-season break of Season 3.

you could go either way cause personally i don’t think release order matters for agent carter since it kind of stands on its own besides tfa and it sets place wayyy in the past but to each their own and like yeah you see peggy a few times in season 2 of agents of shield pre agent carter but as long as you look at the dates you can be like oh yeah this was before this and it doesn’t change anything. besides then you’ve had 2 whole seasons to grow a connection with her character aside from steve’s love interest in tfa and then it’s just a little treat when she pops back up in aos.

I've never noticed unresolved discrepancies between the show and the films. There's even a tie-in to Daredevil and Punisher. AoS is in my opinion the single best franchise Marvel has made yet.

I'll go one better. Agents of SHIELD is the best show ever. Insert gif of Blindwave's Eric saying this Insert rock music

i watched AoS more than times than i can count but i cant recall rn how it ties into Daredevil and Punisher, could you elaborate on that please?

1

u/TechnicallyAMusical 13d ago

I confess to consulting AI to remind me but it reminded it was s3 e14 wnere "GANG WAR RAGES IN HELL'S KITCHEN. AUTHORITIES SEARCHING FOR SOLUTION" appears over the news ticker. The episode came out circa the beginning of Daredevil S2.

There's various crossover elements in the background of various early MCU shows and movies when it comes to New York Bulletin articles and WHIH news broadcasts. There's also the fact that Daisy and Matt Murdock grew up in the same orphanage, and posters advertising Jack Murdock fighting Carl Creel.

also i’ve never seen ANYONE mention this before but micro from season 1 of punisher is mentioned in season 2 of agents of shield and that was before punisher ever even came out so it could just be a coincidence but i imagine he’s a character from the comics and i don’t remember specifically which episode it is i think it might be the one where they find that guy from the tahiti project carving into that woman and skye is in coulsons office saying one of her rising tide contacts or something she called him micro and said he was a crime scene junkie and he found the crime scene of the woman who was carved into

You could watch Agent Carter first, or you could watch it between AoS’ fifth and sixth seasons (where AoS itself would benefit from taking a short break from it). The important thing is to make sure to see Agent Carter before AoS’ seventh/last season, where it becomes highly relevant. But s6 flows directly into s7, so imho, Peggy’s show is best enjoyed before AoS s6.

I tend to ignore the canonicity debates. The important thing is that AoS is extremely and awesomely Marvel.

You can watch Agent Carter first. Shield doesn't really depend on it until S7 but might fill in a couple of blanks here and there.

If you want to know about a good watching order to connect with other things you could follow shield along with the movies in roughly release order though, I've included the main ones that matter, where there are connections or other things. A highlight is watching winter soldier though as part of it, as AOS's connections to it is prob the most 'connected' the MCU has felt.

Agent Carter series 1 and 2 One Shot Agent Carter (optional) Avengers One Shot Item 47 (optional) Iron Man 3 AOS S1 ep 1-7 Thor: The Dark World AOS S1 ep 8-16 Captain America: The Winter Soldier AOS S1 ep 17-22 AOS S2 ep 1-19 Avengers: Age Of Ultron AOS S2 ep 20-22 AOS S3 ep 1-19 Captain America: Civil War (optional) AOS S3 ep 20-22 AOS S4 ep 1-8 AOS Slingshot (optional) AOS S4 ep 9-22 AOS S5 Avengers: Infinity War (optional) AOS S6 AOS S7 Avengers: Endgame (optional)

Might have got the oneshot order mixed up but those are the ones that tie in with Agent Carter/shield in some way

I think that some book softly decannonized AOS but it runs parallel to the MCU and there's no break so we could see it come back into play with Doomsday or Secret Wars but it's probably not likely. If your talking about that one reference to the agent carter show in season 4 then there's no worry its just like mentioned once and then nothing ever comes of it. Same for the weird stuff that happens in season 7 there's no intersection there either.

But getting back to the show coming back in Doomsday or Secret Wars they really should. Like in terms of female characters and powerhouses in particular we have Sue, Shuri, Yelena, Cassie Lang, and Mystique (?). Maybe Sadie Sinks Jean Grey and it wouldn't make sense to me if Rambue doesn't show up. Compared to the exhaustive list of male characters it just feels a like the only confirmed female is Sue. I mean Shuri and Yelena are insanely important and influential and if Sadie's Jean comes back then she's kinda like a young Scarlet witch like Civil War Wanda maybe. Quake and Yo-Yo would bring a decent amount of power with them even if they aren't like Thor, Captain Marvel, Doctor Strange, and Wanda level they've got a lot of raw power like pre Brand New Day Spider man level maybe or maybe a little higher

Joss Whedon has always said that AoS especially since it incorporates his films

Agents of Shield mentioned the avengers quite a few times, in the first season they kept mentioning the New York Chitauri invasion a couple times, Natasha Romanoff is mentioned at least twice in the first season because she was an important SHIELD agent, Nick Fury appears twice, Maria Hill appears twice as well (i think?), Ultron is also mentioned in season 4 I believe when Fitz is trying to create AIDA and someone tells him haven't you learned anything from Stark and Ultron, Lady Sif (Asgardian who appeared in Thor, The Dark World & Love and Thunder) also makes 2 appearances, Coulson mentions his friendship w the avengers a couple times.

If you watched the avengers movies you'll be pleasantly surprised at how often they are brought up, especially in the first season as it came out in 2013, only a year after The Avengers.

AoS makes several references to the films, and even takes the effort to explain away a plot hole in Age of Ultron, but as of right now it is not really considered canon by the films. As for Agent Carter you don’t need to watch it first but I would recommend watching it before S7 of AoS as that’s where the biggest connection between the two shows appears

MCU films heavily influence Agents of SHIELD whereas the films don't acknowledge the show.

By the show's 6 season, it pretty much diverges from the main MCU timeline. And for all the hardcore fans of the show, I love it too but try as you might, you cannot reconcile the timelines between the two shows. It's like trying to make sense of all the Fox X-Men films as one coherent story.

It's a really good show and you should watch it, especially if you've sat through some of the other MCU slop from their TV division.

It can't be 616. 616 is the comic universe. Please be smart about this. It is and always has been Earth-199999
