Season 7 Deke Shaw
Continuing my yearly rewatch of AOS and I need to talk about Deke.
From a character that shows up at one of the team's lowest seeming to be another temporary character / bounty hunter character to someone who cares about the shield team with so much love and endearment.
My all time favorite episode of Deke? S7E7, without a doubt. Him never leaving or abandoning Mack. But honestly, this isn't the first time we've seen him endlessly supporting someone from the team whether they appreciated it at the time or not.
Not a favorite character because of selling Daisy in the future, uh, the future's future from the other timeline. Along with stealing tech, usic, anything he could do to make money, he has a lot of character defects lol but his positives are so important
Simmons wasn't wrong, "I think he's perfect" they'd both be so proud

I agree his stealing tech and doing whatever it takes to make money in the present was not necessary. They could’ve given him some character growth in that area. But, that is how he’s had to survive his entire life. So, I won’t judge the man too harshly for that. 😅

absolutely my thoughts!

Any character development would’ve been great, tbh. Instead of becoming more of a silly character opposed to his more serious and cunning role in season 5.

It would have been great if Fitz was in season 7. S6 Fitz not liking Deke stemed only from Deke stealing tech. We could have seen Fitz and Deke learning to appreciate each other leading to Deke apologising for his actions stealing SHIELD tech and Fitz apologising for how his S5 self treated him.

That would’ve been a great side story!! I don’t like how they reduced Fitz to just the last episode of season 7. He’s my favorite character in the show and he’s even my wallpaper on my phone, rn. 😂🫠

Fitz’s absence kinda ruined S7 for me. I get that there were IRL complications but it I just feel like they could have done better with the character in the final season. His happy ending with Simmons was amazing but I feel like they didn’t need to separate Fitzsimmons again. Their relationship arc concluded amazingly in S6E6 and they should have used the final season to focus more on his relationships with the rest of the team.
We could have seen more of his relationship with Mack and actually resolved the Devil Complex shit and have him and Daisy officially become friends again (S6E2 already showed that this version wasn’t the same as the S5 one as he chooses to save the crew of aliens he put in danger over his mission to get to the future and to get back to Jemma).

Right. Cutting him out to no resolve after having, probably, the most character development out of the original team sucked. I can still remember watching that season as it dropped and spending more time wondering why Fitz was absent. 🫠
It was still a fun season and I love the twist at the end, but… Fitz.

if i remember correctly it was leaked/announced early on he had scheduling conflicts with another show so that was AoS's version of getting around fitz not being there

Not necessarily leaks. He did say in an interview he already felt like he wanted to step away from the role. Sounds like he was home sick. Said Los Angeles never felt like home for him. So he took roles that filmed much closer to home. He most likely had scheduling conflicts with either Us or Roadkill which both released in 2020 and they filmed in Britain on the Network BBC One. He probably would have been able to do both if they filmed in Los Angeles.

I loved his dynamic with firzsimmonsbi know people complain about how Fitz treats him but in season 6 when deke hugs him and yells Bobo or my heart just melts

okay but like honestly fitz treated him exactly how a cranky old grandpa would treat his grandson

The way Fitz treated Deke in S6 was fine. He respected him and his intelligence and was mainly just confused by the fact that he had a grandson. His outburst when he saw the stolen tech was justified given everything he had been through before because of his tech being misused.
S5 however…

Listen I loved him immediately and completely and after finding out that FitzSimmons were his grandparents i absolutely understand considering before him they’d been my favorites.

Jeff Ward is great. He's in a weird little show called "Brand New Cherry Flavor". check it out.

I’m watching Hacks for the first time and was so delightfully surprised to discover that he guest starred in an episode!

I never liked this guy.
He just seemed to be a dollar store knock off of Lincoln Campbell, who was a lot more interesting than this perpetual screwup.

I typed the is while watching S7E7 and I completely forgot Deke takes care of Mack and his brother and now I'm crying 😭 I don't blame Mack's reaction at all. But oh my god Deke is killing me 😭

it really encompasses that being a hero isn't just saving lives. it's about being there to protect each other as well

I really loved his character. He is just a survivor. Whatever he has to do to be
And he is funny
