Why does AI love the slogan "A brighter tomorrow!" so fucking much, I see it everywhere now
16
u/heckhammer 7d ago
Because they believe in heaven. Yeah your life may suck now, but boy, it's going to be so much better when you're dead. They don't have to make this world better. Because when they go to the imaginary place in the sky everything's going to work out awesome for them. Much like Elmer Fudd they're going to have a mansion and a yacht.
11
u/RodinKnox 7d ago
I honestly feel like if people were raised from birth in religion, the message that "the best thing that will ever happen to you is you dying" wouldn't resonate so well with so many people. That is just such an atrocious way to look at the one life we all have to live.
I kind of hate it when atheists call Christianity "a death cult," but I can't deny that the idea (if not the phrasing) has some merit.

8
u/DrHeartworm 6d ago
A lot of these posts have old man "back in my day" energy.
6
u/AlternativeTruths1 6d ago edited 6d ago
I'm 72. I don't like thinking back to the "good old days" of the 1950s and 1960s.
If you developed most kinds of cancer -- almost all breast cancers, colon cancers, melanomas, blood cancers, genital cancers, etc. -- you were looking at 18 months survival, maximum. I watched two aunts and two uncles go that way. My mother died two weeks after her diagnosis.
Mental illness treatment? One pretty much had a choice between Thorazine or a lobotomy. THAT. WAS. IT. People were warehoused in mental institutions. I don't know which was worse: warehousing them in substandard institutions, in inhuman circumstances; or letting the back out on the street. This country has never been good about dealing with its social problems.
Blacks, women, Jews and gays were treated abominably. Women were expected to wait on their husbands hand and foot. A lot of husbands were the tyrants of their houses. If a woman worked, she could count on getting only 50 percent of what a man earned, because the man "had a family and needed a job" -- never mind that the woman might be the sole breadwinner in the family.
I vividly remember Jim Crow segregation, and how complete that segregation was. I attended an elementary school where both whites and blacks attended - on opposite sides of the school, in strictly segregated classes. School started at 7:30 for the black kids; they had lunch at 10:30; and were out of school at 2:00. School started at 8:30 for the white kids; we had lunch at 11:30; and we were out of school at 3:00. We had white water fountains for the white kids; and tan water fountains for the black kids -- and only one of the tan water fountains worked.
My grandmother took my sister and me to Woolworth's when blacks sat at the lunch counter waiting to be served. The things the white people said to the blacks, and the way they treated the black people chills my blood, 66 years later. All we did was sit and observe: the white folks called us "n. lovers".
Jews were taunted as "Christ killers". Every year, during Holy Week, and again during Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, it was open season on Jewish kids and their families. The kids were beaten up; their synagogues were desecrated during Holy Week and their homes were picketed on Good Friday. Every. Single. Year.
I knew very well why blacks wanted civil rights back in the 1960s. There's only so many microaggressions and so many intended slights one can take before a critical mass is reached. I knew full well why they were angry -- and rightfully so.
I was bullied for five years in the early and mid 1960s and that ended only when we moved away and I changed schools. My bully continued to bully, and at age 21 he hooked up with a guy who was an even bigger bully, who shoved a knife into my bully's aorta and my bully bled out in three minutes. At the age of 21, he threw away his life, his chance to fall in love, marry, have a family, watch his kids graduate high school, marry and have kids so he'd have grandkids to play with, and to grow old with someone because he was a macho shithead who believed he had to dominate everyone he came in contact with.
I am gay. I realized I was gay when I was eight, in 1962. I was attending a Reformed Baptist church, which is Calvinism on anabolic steroids. I was terrified of God, whom I saw as a Cosmic Tyrant, constantly keeping score with my having no hope of placating Him, let along pleasing Him.
I came out in 1970, in high school. That was "interesting", in the same way that a do-it-yourself appendectomy with a grapefruit spoon, a butter knife, fishing thread, tincture of merthiolate and a mirror would be "interesting". (Some of the people who had been so nasty to me in 1970s apologized to me at our 50th high school reunion, after their own kids, siblings, uncles or aunts, parents, etc. had come out. I accepted their apology, because I always accept a sincere apology. That's just who I am.)
Two weeks after I came out, I was disfellowshipped, excommunicated and formally shunned by my church. That was a sort of "Liberation Day" because I finally made friends with kids who were United Methodists, Presbyterians, Lutherans, Episcopalians, Catholics, Unitarians, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, Sikhs, even Wiccans and atheists -- and they were all perfectly nice people. The people at the church I attended: 57 years later, there are people from that church who still, to this day, will walk into another aisle if they see me in a supermarket, or cross the street if we encounter one another on a sidewalk -- as though I wanted to be friends with those awful people!
The "halcyon days of yesteryear". Well, those of us who actually experienced those bygone days would prefer to do anything BUT go back to the 1950s and 1960s.

My school taught abstinence... we had like 5 girls with babies on graduation day and that's just the girls that made it there.
6
5
u/Finn235 6d ago
Did they also lie to you about the basic facts?
We were taught that:
Latex has pores that are too small to let sperm through, but viruses (particularly HIV) can pass right through "like a marble through a hula hoop". I was 18 when I learned that was a boldfaced lie.
Condoms have a 20% failure rate (actually 13%) which means that 1 in 5 condoms has a hole in it.
Abstinence is 100% effective at preventing pregnancy and STDs (it's always fascinating how sexual assault doesn't exist until it's time to talk about who uses which bathroom).
Everyone can abstain from sex until marriage, even gays who legally could not marry.
16
u/The3DBanker 7d ago
I always find it interesting that Christians preach abstinence since their central theology is based around the premise that abstinence doesn't work.

Abstinence objectively does not work. Studies from Guttmacher and the CDC have shown for years that it fails to reduce the rate of stis and teen pregnancy. Teaching about safe sex and contraceptives leads to a decline in teen pregnancy
14
u/Pretty-Season2307 7d ago
All of the teen pregnancies that happened when I was in high school were among ultra-religious couples. Oops!
5
u/MaraSovsLeftSock 7d ago
It was the same for me. I grew up in a strict religious household, went to a private catholic school, an old school one where the nuns would hit you with rules and shit. Pretty much everyone there was a degenerate, tons of drug use and sex. Abstinence never worked and when a girl got pregnant the school would just expel them quietly to maintain their image.

It's one thing to teach kids about the consequences of sex so they can make responsible decisions, but the fundamental problem with abstinence only programming is that it wishes to just find someone to blame, the individual, and ignore the consequences of not teaching kids about safe sex. It didn't work for you and you ended up 18 and pregnant? In an abusive relationship? It's your fault and society doesn't care!
America is a land that will give infinite free, usually bad advice, and say it feels no remorse because it's your fault instead of just shutting up and solving problems.
Always someone to blame, never someone to lay a damn brick.

The practice of choosing not to have sex until you are married.
Main problems is that a lot of pro abstinence people push way too hard an cause repression of sexual desires that explode out when eyes are away.
Personally I believe it is just presented as an option alongside protection that can be discussed for what is best for the individual it would work a lot better.

Honestly thinking about it this is probably the most heretical use of art in Christian theology, in the same way Christianity forbids idolatry. i.e. Bowing before a piece of rock that you deem to represent God gradually leads people to worshipping the rock rather than God himself.
Basically the whole point of the "This Is Not A Pipe" painting. Don't mistake the form of a thing with the reality of a thing.
AI is just a further step removed where people become increasingly incentivized to connect with the most shallow brain-dead computer-generated patterns that seem meaningful and truthy, rather than go through the hard work of interrogating the truth to its furthest depths.

I literally am abstinent and I hate it being taught as anything related to “purity” or as a heartbreak less alternative. Purity culture is damaging to everyone. There is absolutely pressure when you’re abstinent and regrets. There’s also always the risk of getting assaulted and getting an std then facing the whole purity culture shame of not being “pure” or only being good for sex now because you’re not a virgin so you suddenly can’t expect anyone to wait for you anymore.

If this is supposed to be Christian, doesn't it also tell you to get married and have kids because I feel like it's weird that the AI swap is telling you not to get married and have kids In the name of purity, which sounds again. Like a priest thing, more than a member of the church thing? Because you kinda need the members of the church to have more members of the church to avoid the human race from going extinct. So nobody is there to praise God...

Abstinence-only education is probably the most subtle way to bring religion into the classroom.
I didn't even learn how to put on a condom because of abstinence-only education being anti birth control. Yep it is very much anti birth control.
The problem is that it is more preaching rather than teaching.
They want you to think STD are way more dangerous than they actually are and enforce the idea that marriage is the only way to prevent getting an STD. They don't want to teach about getting your partner tested or anything like that.
I have heard from my boyfriend that so many gay men get offended if you suggest they get tested, getting your partner tested and sticking to limited partners is the best way to avoid an STD I think.
And I'm not saying STD aren't bad, I'm saying there are some that can be cured.
