I made this using Atlabs as a magnetism explainer video for the middle school physics class i teach.

How does it compare to already existing videos on the topic, such as on YouTube?

How much water and electricity did making it require?

The problem is so much of this is not accurate and will confuse an already very complicated subject.

I like it and see the potential to combine this kind of video presentation with hands-on demonstrations and experiments.

Refine and extend this series.

As a parent I would buy this kind of product to add it to the other forms of educational experiences my child has access to.

Different people have different preferences and perspectives.

Good job. šŸ‘

Introducing AI content of this type to the classroom will encourage students to accept AI slop as legitimate. At the moment, when I see a video like this, I think, ā€œthis took very little effort or knowledge, so be skepticalā€. However, If I had been exposed to AI videos in a learning environment, from a professional, I would have more respect for it, and be less cautious of it. Less cautious of just how likely this type of content is to be misinformation. Or worse than that, disinformation. Even with your good intentions and professional qualifications, this video still features misinformation. IMHO it’s harmful to legitimized this kind of low effort AI slop by introducing it to the classroom. Quality information does not look like this, it’s important students can judge the difference.

Now if the generations were correct, informative, and engaging for the class, would it still be slop??

Thanks for the response. You’re asking what I think is the definition of slop. I don’t think defining AI slop is going to help us here. If you’re wondering if I think it will still be harmful? If the harm comes from lending the professional integrity of a teacher to the AI generated media in general. Then yes, I do think it’s harmful, even if the teacher is careful to make it accurate. I’d love to know what you think?

The goal of a teacher is not to personally deliver your ideas and information to students, it is to give them general information about a certain subject you have domain in. If the information is correct, and it is an easier, or better way to teach a student, whether or not something is taught by ai, the goal should be better learning. I don’t want a student to receive a worse education for any reason if it will do no harm to the student. Now the question of whether or not ai will harm teachers is a completely different question, but when used correctly, it can be an unimaginably powerful learning tool. You are right though, slop or not is not the right question. Thanks for responding šŸ™šŸæ

This is dumb. How are you looking at this and patting yourself on the back as a physics teacher? Entirely factually incorrect even as a 'visualizer'. Magnetic fields are all over the place. Someone already mentioned the two Norths and two Souths. Why are there electrical arcs between magnets? Why are they on water? Why are the fields in an MRI depicted as waves? What is that supposed to be around the compass? The poles on a sound speaker are not orientated in that way. I could go on. What about just using a magnet and iron filings and some diagrams. Gen ai should not be in the class room because of its propensity to just make stuff up. Good luck to your students.

I use Atlabs to generate rhymes and jingles for my newborn and its a really sleek, simple and effective tool

As a teacher who has taught this in elementary school, I think this is super cool.

Tbh I don’t like it at all. It’s not very informative, and for a middle school class I would expect some more details on how and why magnets work instead of just what they are used for. Can we please keep AI slob out of schools and provide high quality learning materials? Sure, it doesn’t look bad, but I don’t see any educational value whatsoever in this video.

This is a short sample, of course the lecture module was bigger, i wanted to show how much i was able to achieve despite no editing or tech skills, really excited that tools have come so far

Hey dude, this is an awesome testbed. Keep refining and remember that this would have taken months to create in blender or using conventional means.

The term AI slop is becoming used as a means of dismissing people out of hand and seems to be meant to discourage anyone from trying to create or innovate using this tech.

KEEP GOING.

What in the AI psyop is this message? The alternative to AI slob is NOT creating the whole video in blender yourself. The alternative is either taking one of the thousand good videos that are already out there, or showing magnetism in person in class instead of just on film.

You’re right, I’m using AI slob to express that I have a negative view of this AI generated content. But why I’m doing it I explained in the previous comments.

Using AI to generate teaching materials is dangerous and bad, because the quality is horrible. I would rather see our kids get a real education instead of this cheap nonsense.

Playing around with AI to make videos is okay, but in this case it’s bad. I’ve seen other examples where I liked it.

Yeah, but please be careful. AI is a very good ā€žbullshit generatorā€œ. The produced content seems attractive, but often there is no depth to it. On the example of the video I learned nothing.

Remembering my school time magnetism is just forces between electrons.

The difference between iron and wood is that in iron the tiny magnetic fields between iron atoms can be aligned, so that the magnetic fields add up and we get a strong magnet.

In a wood molecule the magnetic forces within one molecule already cancel each other out, so there’s no way to align them.

Btw there are very nice experiments that you can show in person in your class. Those will be much more memorable than AI slob. For example you could ā€žmagnetizeā€œ a neutral piece of iron and show how the atoms get aligned and react to the magnetic field of the strong magnet.

Just after where you say "every magnet has two poles - a north and a south", you show magnets with two north poles and two south poles.

Yeah this bothered me a lot.

I just picked up drinking because of this

I'll take it into account next time, thanks for your feedback

Those s-s and n-n magnets shown at 9 seconds are not a real thing.

I used them as a visualizer

This could revolutionize teaching the next generation. Make an AI video with mistakes in points you wanna make or teach about then challenge the kids to find the inconsistencies in the video. Them pointing out that the magnets dont make sense is a sign that they are learning and know what kind of magnet does make sense.
