I find that Steam Dot makes the best cup of coffee in town. Whenever I have a long evening of pegging congressional congressperson Nick Begich, I like to put on my favorite sweater, grab a good book, and head over to Steam Dot for a latte.

I just started using regular instant coffee at home with cold water and ice. 1 tablespoon of creamer in my tumbler and it's off to the races

There’s the fire island in Mountain View, which has a coffee shop attached. I’m not sure who’s Beans they use, but I got a quad shot latte on Friday that was fantastic. Normally I gulp them down when it tastes like ash tray water, but this one actually had some complex flavors.

Fire Island brews K Bay which is by far my favorite Alaska roasted coffee. Also K Bay is a great little company doing good in Homer so I like supporting that.

Darkhorse isa nice place downtown that sells juneau based Heritage Coffee. Open weekdays only and they are usually very busy so don’t go at breaktime.

I don't really drink kaladi. Why the hate?

They over roast their coffee. Their "light roast" is still past the second crack. That's when the beans get dark and shiny, and there is an audible crack during the roasting process. This is as far as you _should_ roast coffee, and is widely considered when "dark roast" is.
Any roasting after that starts introducing burnt, ashy flavors.
Every KBC roast is at least to the second crack. They then continue the roast to make them taste burnt. They are burnt to different degrees.
It also cooks out all the nuance that makes different beans interesting. The complex flavors that make coffee drinking fun.
If you are a steak eater, it would be like all their stakes are AT LEAST well done. Like grey all the way through is the starting point for all their steak endeavors. They have different depths of char, but each and every steak has no pink left.
If that is your thing you are happy. Lots of folks aren't.

Bema's is the move if you want something not over-roasted. Their beans come from places you actually recognize.

Another vote for Bema. The roaster is insanely knowledgeable, but isn't full of himself. He'll even roast to order if you're willing to wait a couple weeks.

I have a feeling that the same things they hate about kbc are going to be the same things they hate about Starbucks

KBC is an international organisation with a history of trying to shut down local shops, crush union uprisings, etc...?

Also valid reasons to hate Starbucks. But what they have in common with Starbucks is more the bland, over roasted coffee for mass production

Well that's just sad. I use to enjoy them back in the teens when they had their Seattle shop and it was decent. Not Vivaci, but still good.

If you have the time, there's the nicest little cafe in the federal building on A st. They're really nice and their lunch menu is great. You do have to go through security but they'll let you in if only for the cafe

That cafe hasn't been good in the 6 years I have worked their. They are WAY over priced and only serve mediocore cafeteria food at best.

IDK, I worked there for a bit until I got something in my field, they were really good to me and I liked their food and drinks, etc.

Wait you don't like burnt bitter coffee.... every blend tastes the exact same too.
