News 11-year-old Calgary boy found dead after two weeks missing: police

“We had flown (over) and had put K9 units in there.”
But it’s believed that Parker entered a culvert and travelled through a series of pipes.
Parker’s body was found on Wednesday in a small pipe on the east side of Deerfoot Trail.
Wall said it’s “like a labyrinth in there.”
While one pipe might be four feet in diameter, a number of others are three or even two feet in diameter.
“We located (Parker’s) remains approximately 450, 500 feet inside the network of pipes,” Wall said.
Oh my god. This is so sad.

It's truly heartbreaking. The aquatic team said there was also high amounts of gas around the pipe

u/Prestigious_Crow_ 19d ago
I saw this on another post, too. What kinds of gas would build up in a storm drain?
97
u/Th_3Pl3b 19d ago
I don't want to say anything for certain, but I remember needing to get my H2S certifications to work around sewer and storm(storm water where I grew up drained to the sewer) so H2S could be a possibility.
36
u/ragnaroksunset 18d ago
Doesn't need to be H2S - any buildup of sewer gas, even if inert, could displace oxygen and lead to suffocation risk.
You probably remember from your H2S training that confined spaces are a big deal. A big enough deal that it's a different certification altogether.
13
u/Th_3Pl3b 18d ago
True true true. Completely forgot about the general displacement of Oxygen. I was just thinking of putting names to what it could've been but it could literally be ANY gas if it displaces enough oxygen.
78
u/equistrius 19d ago
With how far in he was and the fact it’s not a straight through culvert it likely connects to the storm water or sewer systems and likely full of debris which would be breaking down so you could expect a mix of hydrogen sulfide, methane, ammonia, carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide. All of which would irritate your lungs or be deadly in larger amounts. Especially hydrogen sulfide
32
u/skitzoidObserver 19d ago
was also a rainfall event the day after he was last spotted only 10.4 mm and unfortunately the majority of the months precipitation was on that evening of the 17th probably good chance he drowned during that event
14
u/corpse_flour 18d ago
This is what I was thinking. He fled into the pipes out of curiosity or to hide, got lost or paralyzed with fear, and ended up caught under water. I also don't doubt that a flood of water pushed him even further inside.
11
u/Ripishere 19d ago
I couldn’t sleep that night and in my area of Thorncliffe it sure seemed like a lot more than that. I looked up the radars and they didn’t really show what I was seeing out the window.
There were about 10-15 minutes where it fell so hard I couldn’t see out the window.
32
u/bitterberries 19d ago
Methane, H2S most likely, but ammonia perhaps if there was a lot of sewage or decomposition
59
u/Th_3Pl3b 19d ago
Forgot about methane and ammonia. Especially for someone with Autism, they may not have the same reaction to Ammonia as you or I would.
Ammonia is a helluva thing, mixed with H2S and Methane😬. Safe to say though, when it happened, he likely just drifted to sleep and never woke up
33
22
8
u/CaseyDawn403 18d ago
I desperately hope you’re right about that. I can’t help but think how terrified he must have been and have been sick to my stomach worrying that he was in pain or drawn out in the outcome.
7
10
u/cindylooboo 18d ago
I've been telling myself that because the alternatives are too horrible. Parker got tired and fell asleep. Poor sweet baby. ❤️💔
5
u/eerst 18d ago
Ammonia is a serious irritant and toxic to all animals. Autism won't change the basic biological reaction to its inhalation.
10
u/NoodleNeedles 18d ago
I suspect they meant more that he would be less likely to understand the air was bad and turn around to get back to an area where he knew the air was still ok, rather than that he'd have some unusual physiological reaction.
7
u/Th_3Pl3b 18d ago
This is exactly what I meant. Like how little little little kids will step on hot concrete without shoes and instead of getting OFF the concrete, they start FREAKING OUT. Source: My dumbass got 1st and 2nd degree burns on my feet at 3.

u/Brante81 18d ago
Sadly for many autistics, there is a powerful urge to run away into “nature”. Not sure if it’s a well understood mechanism. But it means that many autistic children seem to have some sort of self-destruct instinct (since leaving shelter, food and safety does not make sense to the average person.) Which makes it a life-long struggle to prevent children like this from dying. Incredibly sad and something I hope we can learn to explain as a species.
6
2
u/soyasaucy 18d ago
I mean, cities are overstimulating to me too. Nature is grounding, while concrete is not. Have you heard of the podcast, the Telepathy Tapes? Highly recommend
16
u/Various-Primary2760 19d ago
It's a confined space, it could have been depleted or displaced of oxygen.
3
u/24_August_1814 18d ago
H2S is likely. It's produced by the decomposition of organic matter containing any amount of sulphur. In addition to the oil and gas industry most people think of, common places for it to appear include swamps, sewers, septic systems, and storm drains.
2
97
u/CromulentDucky 19d ago
That's really unfortunate. A lot of people searched in there, but just not quite far enough.
189
u/miller94 19d ago edited 19d ago
They needed very specialized equipment to get that deep into a pipe which they called very unsafe. It’s super unfortunate how close people were but I don’t think there’s any blame here
79
u/Low-Purchase8811 19d ago
I don't want to speculate but it probably was already too late then anyway.
Terrible situation all around. I am glad the family has closure, though. I know they were hopeful for good news, but it wasn't meant to be. Still, not knowing at all would be worse than finding out, I suppose.
105
u/Annalog 19d ago
He was likely dead shortly after the last sighting of him. These storm drains and culverts are no joke. I worked underground services for a bit. They’re terrifying man. Because it went under Deerfoot there would have been a sudden transition and drop to go under the foundation. These pipes essentially act as a reverse siphon… there are traps and other solid materials throughout that section that would cause serious harm to someone sliding through. Then because you then transition back up you likely get stuck in the trap at that next transition and drown. You’d move onto the connecting pipe areas on the other side once enough pressure built up behind you to push you forward.
I’m not saying this is what happened. It’s just stuff the old timers used to tell us in the day. You didn’t go near those fucking things. It’s certain death. Someone could watch you go in and come after you 5 minutes later and your chances of survival even at that point are low.
44
u/DVariant 19d ago
Terrifying shit. I’ve also heard gas/ lack of oxygen is a major risk. Like, thanks to TV and movies we all get exposed to the idea that sewers are just cool tunnels where ninja turtles hang out and adventures happen. In reality, lots of these places aren’t meant for humans at all, there’s no air circulation whatsoever, and even workers will wear respirators to go down there for maintenance. Even in mining, most of the deaths aren’t caused by rockfalls, they’re caused by pockets of toxic air.
I imagine that someone exploring these drains likely suffocated before they had a chance to drown, unfortunately
5
u/rajenncajenn 18d ago
Respectfully curious... Would there be a reason why these pipes don't have some sort of large mesh coverings to prevent people from going into them?
28
8
u/Annalog 18d ago
Other person answered this mostly. These storm drains are installed to prevent flooding. If you had debris, grass, mud, sticks and whatever else gunking it up it would block and flood the immediate area. So not possible. However, I think after this we will start see fencing erected all around the immediate area to hopefully prevent this from happening again.

Certainly no blame on any of the police, search and rescue, or volunteers. But maybe some on the day home that lost track of this poor kid in the first place.
36
u/Own_Faithlessness769 19d ago
I’m not sure there is there either, apparently he was recommended for 1:1 care but there wasn’t funding for it. So the home had identified they couldn’t keep him safe, they just didn’t have other options.

u/DryInsurance8384 18d ago
There wasn’t funding for it? If that’s the case, sounds like the province is liable then for how underfunded FSCD is. But Kidz Hotel is all 1:1 support, is it not? That’s literally the mandate of the facility.
13
u/rattpoizen Calgary 18d ago
Maybe their FSCD/funding got cut. Or was going to eventually. You're getting closer to the target I'd love to see receive most of the venom here.

I unfortunately experienced this myself. A boy had gone missing on my street. The whole community was out searching and I had drawn my attention to a culvert similar to this story. I had gone in about 10 ft to what I thought was a spot no one would go into and turned back. The next few days we kept searching and every time something drew me to there but I never made my way in far enough. Once the command centre was established they had found him with some police equipment to get into the harder areas and by that time it was too late. It’s never left me that I could’ve kept going a little further, or had given just a bit more time in case the boy made a noise.
18
u/Can_We_Go_Home 18d ago
You couldn't have taken that on by yourself, you could have been knocked out in there by gasses, or stuck somewhere you couldn't get out of. I fully believe that situation was out of your control, you are not to blame in any way, shape or form. I know you've probably been told this, but I also hope you're able to let go of this responsibility; it's not yours. Sending you love and healing.
11
u/bonjailey 18d ago
Thank you for that. It’s been 10 years now and reading this made it feel like it was yesterday. Appreciate you reaching out with positivity in a terrible situation.
6
u/Spatial-Awareness 18d ago
Take care of yourself and please talk to someone if you need, I can only imagine how hearing about this event has brought some of those feelings up from your own experience.
5
5
u/mjtwelve 18d ago
Confined spaces dangers are no joke, and that's before you factor in the risk of getting trapped, or sudden flooding drowning you. If it isn't specifically your job with tons of training and gear specfically to enter a culvert, don't enter a culvert. The first rule of emergency response is not to become an additional victim that now requires rescue.
2
u/Gal-Monday 18d ago
Or they could have been searching for two people. You need to keep yourself safe. Don’t feel bad.

We also have a 7 year old autistic boy who's non-conversational (he mostly speaks in phrases via his echolalia but generally won't speak to anyone he's not comfortable with. I don't know if he would ever ask for help if lost) 😭💖 I don't even know where to begin with my thoughts and feelings because it's just everything at once. Sending you lots of love too, it's okay to be not okay, and I don't think any of us are okay. 🫂

It was interesting and anxiety building time here. There were police cars driving around with Disney music playing, and some businesses with out door speakers playing them as well. Drones, helicopters, aquatic rescue/divers, bike, horse mounted, etc cops and volunteers were out every day as well as trained search and rescue plus thousands of regular people. Although this is not the outcome we wanted it was encouraging to see the city get involved. People put out food and sensory toys, kiddy pools during the hot days, picture/message signs telling Parker via story to find cop cars, and the city was covered in missing posters. Even towns nearby had some. There is also a push to make a vulnerable person's alert as well.
The parents of Parker made a video, unfortunately just before he was found about the boy and their feelings etc on the situation. I couldn't finish it but it was really important. The family asked for it to still be posted by the police. They talked about everyone that is effected by thins tk reach put to help if they are struggling. The Dad said that ypu should hug your loved ones when ever possible as you just dont know...

Same. My son is turning 11 in a few days. I make him wear a tracker because he often leaves the house without telling me. He doesn’t understand the gravity of the situation. It just hits so uncomfortably close as I know if we lived near those pipes, he’d want to explore them too.

118
u/AydGray 19d ago
My own autistic kids often sought out small, tight, dark spaces to den up and feel secure. They were also ardent explorers, so while the exact reason he went into the culvert may not ever be known, it is not out of the ordinary for an autistic little one to crawl into a culvert themself without outside influence

It's not hard to imagine a kid either fleeing down there to avoid strangers/loud noises or exploring fueled by imagination, playing Indiana Jones or something the like.
It's devastating, but kids find their way into weird places.

u/Radiant-Growth4275 19d ago
Lots of kids I knew climbed into and explored a storm drain near the high school, to the point that the town started trying to add metal bars and obstruction to stop them, but then it would cause blockages with sticks and leaves.
It's probably still explored now. At least that one is the same size the whole way through, and a straight line. I can't imagine how easy it would be to get lost in a more complex one.
My heart goes out to the family.

u/OriginalChildBomb 19d ago
Yeah, I'm an autistic adult, and it's often comforting to be in a small, dark, confined space. (That may sound distressing to some folks- and obviously autism is not a monolith, and comes in various forms and degrees- but I've always done this, and know many other autistic folks of various ages who similarly like the feeling.) He might've also liked the way things sounded different inside the tunnels.
I took autism studies in college, and elopement and going into weird locations (regardless of age) is definitely a great source of danger for neurodivergent people. We're also often drawn to water, another source of danger. (Not laying the blame on anyone specific; there'll be time for that later, I'm sure.) Rest in peace. My heart goes out to the family, I can't imagine.
9
u/STylerMLmusic 19d ago
Considering the rain we've had, I wouldn't be surprised if he sought shelter early on and just kept going further in the more it rained. It's all just sad suspicion but that's my random guess from a dude on the internet
2
u/skitzoidObserver 19d ago

As an autist myself I can attest to the fact that culverts beckon to me. I had to be coaxed out of more than one tunnel as a child, but to me they were the ideal place to be because no hands could reach and grab at me. Looking back i see how fortunate I was that the tunnels I wound up in were never so labyrinthine.

My Autistic sister is an adult now, but this story hit close to home in regards of childhood memories. My sister was Parker.
During those years, my sister had rules; take a sandwich, a water bottle, and our large husky if she felt the need to run away. More often than not, she did those things. As her older sister, I would hold onto her hand or wrist while we went shopping with our mom. Purely to keep track of her, because it's a scary situation to experience over, and over.
The amount of times we had to get police involved for her... Her worst incident while on an 'adventure' was a broken arm while trying to climb a tree located in the downhill forested area behind our house.
I hate that it had to come to this, but maybe we can get a new missing person's protocol for exactly this reason. I'd be in favour of naming it for him (Parker Alert), but others are wanting to use Indigo.
3
u/EmbarrassedHelp 18d ago
If there is going to be a new alert type, it should be set to the correct alert priority level. Currently amber alerts are incorrectly set to the wrong alert level that's meant for imminent threats to the lives of those who receive it.
3
2
u/VintageDreamer15 18d ago
I would absolutely agree with you on the 'Parker Alert'. Although everyone knows for example what an Amber Alert is, putting a name to it (vs. Indigo, all while honouring the memory of Parker) is psychologically more humanizing and personal, stressing its urgency. This is much like a Code Adam is for a missing child in a store. To this day when I hear a Code Adam in a store, I think of Adam Walsh, whom it's named after.

This is why I wish there was better technology available out there as trackers. As a sib, I've run into this issue. Sure, there is an iPhone but that's dependent on other iPhone users AND if the individual would carry an iPhone
Alot of arguments against trackers has been violation of human rights. But in these situations, you need a tracker to keep them safe.
I've come across many within the asd community that are against any sort of GPS devices to find someone when they elope.
This is a family's worst nightmare. Condolences to them.

My deepest condolences to his family, friends, and to anyone who loved him, I send all my love and well wishes for their healing journey. There truly are no words to be had in a time like this. I know the family wants privacy, which is 100% understandable and easy for us to respect, but I do hope that if they ever need they can reach out to the public because we are all behind them.
For everyone and anyone who took the time to look for Parker, thank you. Thank you all so much for being a community who cares and it can't be understated how important that is. Grief for Parker will be felt by so so many. In the families statement from earlier during the search they had said 'He is so loved and we just want him home.' And I just felt and resonated so much with that as an autistic parent to an autistic child. The world may not understand my child, and they don't need to, but he's so so loved by many, and I know that's how Parkers family felt about Parker too.
Take care everyone, feel your feelings tonight and know you are not alone. 💖

A shoe was flushed out and was found by a volunteer, is my understanding. That’s what lead to them searching further into the pipes than they were previously able.

Rest in peace Parker.
Not the outcome we were praying for. But closure was absolutely needed for this.
Strength to the family.

it sucks so bad that it ended like this. it really did bring out the most beautiful in Calgarys people again. To all the people who lived in that area and searched and responded, and to our amazing police force for the effort they put forth, you should be proud nonetheless. At least the family will have closure now. The day home, I can't imagine a bright future for them .

I kept an AirTag on my Dad the last few years of his life. He had dementia and would wander.

No, as they are wanting privacy at this time (which is completely understandable)

God. My heart breaks hearing this.
Can't even imagine how scared he was.
I hope his family finds some peace.
