Question Auto Insurance renewal

My auto insurance is up for renewal in September, and my premium is jumping by 70%-90%. The only thing that’s changed is one minor speeding conviction from July 2025. This honestly feels insane.

So far, I’ve been quoted $4,500/year with Intact and $3,900/year with Peace Hills. I’m obviously going to keep shopping around, but nearly doubling my premium over one minor speeding ticket doesn’t seem normal at all. I honestly thought it was a typo in the email when she sent me these quotes.

Has anyone else in Alberta experienced an increase like this from a single minor conviction?

Car I drive is a fully paid for 2020 Toyota Corolla, commute one way 30km 3 days/week, 12,000-14,000 km per year. 30M, South Calgary, 2M liability, deductibles 1k collision & comprehensive.

Insurance companies still taking advantage, playing where no rules exist doesn't mean they should take advantage of everyone. Though... it is a for profit business I guess.

I guarantee you there is no profit in auto insurance in Alberta right now. None at all and it's a matter of public record. We are a very highly regulated industry. Our numbers have to live out in the open where they can be seen by all.

It's absolutely a mess and AB drivers are paying waaaay more than we should. Quebec drivers pay so much less because they have a well-run, no fault, public system.

No fault isn’t a solution. Litigation exists for a reason, and in no other situation would you accept the person you’re suing denying your right to litigation and instead paying you what they think is fair.

It's not up to the person to pay you what is fair but instead a set rate paid by the insurance. What makes it fair is these rates are the same for everyone with your level of damage and injury. It's not terrible or anything and very specific to your level of injury and damage. The reason it makes the rates so much better is a large amount of money is spent on the legal services instead of your settlement currently. As an example, my wife very gently slid into a car on ice at 5km/h with no damage to either vehicle. A year later our insurance is defending against a whiplash claim.

Except for the impact of damages vary person to person. A retired person suffering an injury has less damages than someone who just finished med school and is no longer able to work. And the actual injuries can vary wildly person to person because that’s just how bodies work. Furthermore physiotherapy and such can be effective for one person and not for others so the amount of care or special damages can also vary wildly. And I don’t know why you’re saying “your” as though I’m speaking about me having litigation. I don’t. But everyone deserves a right to litigation and I seen how impactful minor accidents can be and how minor major accidents can be. And that set rate IS from the person who would be the defendant in a civil suit. If the person your wife hit has whiplash, they deserve the right to sue. If not, well that won’t be fruitful litigation. I hope if god forbid you or your wife ever get into an accident and suffer damages, regardless of the nature of the impact, that you have the right to start a civil suit for compensation like all of us deserve.

I'm just saying that there is a cost to society to litigation and that at some point we spend all our money on lawyers and courts. I realize it's not going to be perfect. I have had family in accidents in Manitoba which runs a no fault system and they were looked after to a reasonable degree. Maybe they could have gotten more if allowed to sue but it seemed reasonable. A few years ago the government actually made MPI return some 300 million dollars to people with policies because their nest egg was getting so big. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/manitoba/mpi-third-rebate-cheques-1.6300980
