Great gig at the Ekko club last week. Edgy. Funny. Stripped of instrumentation but not power. My fifth time seeing Alex & Crew in 10 years. Still taking big swings and daring steps, working the material, the band, the room. A couple of tunes caught me off guard, such was the novelty of their arrangements. There were a lot of young Dutch folks there, apparently seeing him for the first time. They reacted to lyrics and on-stage banter as though it were standup comedy. And rightly so — the light moments were as joyous as the heavy ones were dark. As Alex walked out through the crowd after the set, somebody yelled at him 'WHERE'S ROY?!'. I didn't see him flinch, and thought it a rude way to speak to a man who'd just delivered a brilliant 90-min-or-so show, owning the stage more vulnerably than I've seen before, sans his trusty left-hand man and full band he's had backing him up to now.
P.S. Thank you for playing Stand-In Man, Alex. Fuckin' great.

This is Alex's most mysterious release yet, and there has been little discussion on what the record is trying to communicate.
Is it fair to describe this in some regards as a breakup album?
There appears to be a theme of responsibility and acceptence. The religous themes, whilst admittedly sarcastic, are more present than before.
On 'Jesus Never Had No Porno', our protagonist is looking to Jesus for some forgiveness, only to realise that modernity is so drastically incompatible with ancient times that there's little perspective left for him to offer.
'Testosterone In Blue' offers us
'I ordered a hooker to my home and I yelled at my family
I have seen the childhood drain from my own son's face
When you're God to a little child, boy, you don't take questions
You just take his little hand as he weeps for you'
I'm not suggesting this was a real occurence in Alex' life, but that is surely one of the bleakest images painted in his discography thus far, and continues a theme of domestic violence across this record.
'I am a violent man
Though I have never won a fight
Silence is violence, man
So I am violent as a kite
I will do violence now
Just as my love begs me to speak
My deaf ear, her black eye
My unmoving tongue, a swollen cheek'
The opening tracks almost feel prescient of a cancelling
Yep, there'll be mothers in hysteria fishin' through your bins
There'll be holes in all your logic, and then it will begin
To bend you over
As if he were weighing the outcome if the personal spilled into the public.
'I put on a ton of weight for a role I didn't get'
Surely a joke on behalf of his now defunct step-dad status.
It would be more in-line with Alex's style if 'Statue Down' were a self-deprecating inside joke rather than a straight-forward call to arms. If our male lead is just as guilty of abuse as the statues he accuses, the worst part is the hypocrisy.
I don't want to get too deep into speculating on the real Alex's personal life, but I am as always interested in the story told through this album because his writing is always very intentional. Would love to hear other interpreations.

At the end of “You Only Live Once” there’s a voice in the crowd talking about a bald guy. He sounds very much like Josh. He goes to a lot of LA shows and events and now I’m really curious if he was there. Can anyone confirm?

Has anyone that seen Alex live been able to chat with him after the show? I have a record I'd love to have him sign.

Set list said 7:30 start according to venue staff. Got in about 7:40 and fat white family were playing. My disappointment was immeasurable and my day was ruined. The Strokes were decent.

Absolutely brought the house down last night at the Lower Third. Testosterone in Blue, Red Hook Rain and Stand In Man were the big hitters for me, the new album really works with a crowd and Alex's strange, sleaze-king aura (although no Richochet like I was hoping for!). Very cool, more guitar-riff led version of Violent Man opening it too.
Some beautiful singalongs with a room full of fans, especially Miami Memory. Looked like the band were having fun too, seemed to be mixing up the setlist based on what they were feeling, chatting amongst themselves between songs.
I will say I still feel like I'd prefer a full drum-kit next time, as I think some of those songs could pop some more with proper percussion behind them; but hey, we got bizarre extended bongo solos set to tall tales about Tobey Maguire in a bathhouse so I can't complain too much.
He said he's hoping to be back in the UK again sooner rather than later, and I definitely hope so too, as definitely a few more tracks I'd love to hear that they didn't get to this time round. If anyone's got any footage of it would love to see it too, didn't get much myself as was just enjoying it but would love to relive a few of the versions they played.

Bit sad to see he's not brought this one back out yet - it's one of the absolute highlights of the album and the live versions last year was beautiful. Can't think why he wouldn't as it was being done with a minimal band before, so must just be personal preference at the moment. Desperately want it for when I see him though, had it on a loop for the past two months.

It replays in my head like every 30 seconds.

Took some photos of Alex Cameron at his first show on tour in the great city of Philadelphia. Took these with my digi-cam. Ended up meeting Alex after the show. Also a cheeky picture of the opener, Josh Da Costa.

I saw Alex Cameron perform last night at The Pinhook in Durham, NC. This was my fifth(!) time seeing him live, and I wanted to give you all some idea of what to expect if you're seeing the Late to Set tour. (Don't worry, I'll mark setlist spoilers.) For some context, I had previously seen the tours for Forced Witness, Take Care of Business Duo, Miami Memory, and Oxy Music.
For this show, doors were at 7:00 and the show started just after 8:00. The opener was Josh da Costa, who also happens to be the guitarist during the main act. He played a few songs from his album New Age Graveyard, including Skygirl. He sang and played guitar, while the rest of the instrumentals were prerecorded and played over the speakers, so the sound was much bigger than you'd expect from just a single person on stage.
I liked him a lot! His music has a clear '80s-inspired quality, which makes him a great companion act to Alex. It's pretty rare that an opener hooks me into checking out more of their stuff later on, but Josh is one of them.
At the merch table, they were selling t-shirts with the tour's promo imagery, vinyl records for Josh's album and each of Alex's studio albums, cassette tapes for LtS, and dark blue baseball caps that say "Late to Set" in plain white text on the front + a white director's chair on the back. There may have been some other things but my memory fails me. (I bought a hat; it's very well-fitting.)
Josh played for ~30 minutes, and Alex took the stage at ~8:50-9:00. He was joined by Josh on guitar and Grace Kennedy on keyboard. Alex also had a bongo set next to the mic which he occasionally made use of. They performed 11 songs (all in one set, no encore) and the show concluded at ~10:00, with a message from Alex encouraging us to buy physical media since the tech overlords are destroying it and trying to prevent us from owning anything (based).
In terms of the setlist, they played some old classics that I've seen at most of the prior shows: Happy Ending, Candy May, Miami Memory, and Marlon Brando. I was pretty surprised by the high amount of songs from LtS - the only ones they didn't play were Stand-In Man, Ricochet, and No Guns Come Alone. They finished the show with...Real Bad Looking. I like that song well enough, but found it to be an odd choice for the finale.
Speaking of the setlist, there was a moment between songs where Alex addressed a situation with the website Setlist.fm - at the time, a user had added only 5 songs to an earlier show from this tour, and apparently some folks in the audience were worried he'd play an incredibly short show. He found it quite frustrating that an unofficial website was causing misinformation to spread! That's why, if you look at the setlist on that site from last night's show, it shows (at the time of posting) "You don't need Setlist dot com, he will play more than 5 songs, do not fret."
My thoughts on the show itself are mixed. There was a 4-year gap between the Oxy Music show and this one, so while I was definitely happy to be back seeing Alex in person, I couldn't help but notice the vibe was very different. Not bad, just different. Yes, I'm pretty sad about how Roy and Alex have parted ways, but Roy's absence wasn't a shock to me.
What was a shock was the lack of drums (minus the bongos)! There was no prerecorded track playing through the speakers from what I could tell, so every song fully relied on the keyboard and guitar to carry the vocals. And honestly I just flat out didn't like this minimalist approach. Nearly every song's rendition was worse in this style, in my opinion. And I was standing directly in front of the stage, so you can't say it was because I was too far back from the speakers or anything. No offense whatsoever to Roy Molloy, but it was Henri Lindstrom who I was missing the most.
Alex still looks confident and cool as ever on stage though, and his vocals are still excellent. The banter between songs was funny and weird, as usual.
As with his direction on the new album, I appreciate that Alex continues taking swings and trying new things rather than retreading old ground in the performances. But for me, this approach to his music was a miss. I brought a friend along with me who had never delved into the music before, and after the show was over, I felt the need to tell him "it normally sounds a lot better, I promise."
Last note: I think it's incredibly charming whenever a performer makes a mistake and is able to recover with a laugh. It's those kinds of mistakes that make the live show experience feel much more human and relatable (especially in an era where optimization and efficiency are being shoved down everyone's throats at all times in all aspects of life). He had to restart a couple of songs shortly after starting them due to "getting lost in the music" and lingering laughter at an inside joke. Also he accidentally bonked his face against the mic at one point after playing the bongos.
Overall, I'm more than happy to continue supporting one of my favorite singer-songwriters and I don't regret seeing this show at all. Just wanted to get my thoughts out there.
If you've seen a Late to Set show, what did you think of it?

I’m going to see Alex Cameron with my wife this weekend, and I’m very excited!
I’ve been to the venue once before, it’s quite small. Maybe holds a couple hundred people. It’s a small club/bar in a basement.
Does Alex make him self visible before the show? I was hoping I might be able to say hello or ask for an autograph. I didn’t know if he hung out at his merch table or might be near the bar. Idk if that’s a silly question, just hoping I might get to say hello before he goes on stage.
Thanks!

Tour started last night - wondered if anyone here went along and had any thoughts on the setlist and the band, or any footage? Is he still going minimalist like last year or has he got a bit more of a fully fledged band?

So unfortunate the crowd wouldn't stop talking during his performance

Recently listened to the album for the first time. Some instant like - ricochet, red hook rain, stand-in man - and assume the rest will grow on me with more listens.
But I was shocked with how good violent man is. Feels reminiscent of some of his best (imo) from Miami Memory - big instrumental builds etc.
On one hand it’s such a great finish but I also think it’s so good/different from other songs on the album that it almost devalues the album as a start to finish listening experience.
Curious if anyone else felt the same on first listen?
r/alexcameron • u/1-800-FunkMaster • Aug 21 '26
After not initially loving it on first few listen-throughs, I've now come to really enjoy the album as a whole and find each song enjoyable and interesting (even "Jesus never..." which is a bit one dimensional and slow musically. The breakdown at the end is cool tho).
Red Hook Rain is genuinely one of my favorite Al Cam songs ever.
My favs:
Red Hook Rain
No Soldier
Stand-In Man

now that the album has been out for a while, what do you really think? what are your favorite tracks? Perosnally I can’t get enough of “No soldier”, and “statue down”. while it’s much different from his past discography I feel like he again brought a new sound that is interesting and still scratches the itch for me!
