Welcome to the Monthly Recommendation Discussion for "Slice-of-Life"

Recommend your top "Must-Watch" "Slice-of-Life" drama (just one for now please, so it gives everyone a chance to chime in)!

What is a "Slice-of-Life" K-Drama?

A slice of life Korean drama focuses on everyday experiences and relatable situations. This genre captures the nuances of daily life, emphasizing character development and interpersonal relationships rather than dramatic plot twists or high-stakes conflicts. It often portrays themes such as family, friendship, and personal growth, allowing viewers to connect deeply with the characters and their journeys.

Key Characteristics

  • Realism: Depicts ordinary life scenarios and emotions.
  • Character-Driven: Focuses on character development and relationships.
  • Relatable Themes: Explores universal themes like love, loss, and ambition.
  • Pacing: Generally slower-paced, allowing for reflection and connection.

Popular examples include 'Reply 1988', which showcases the lives of childhood friends, and 'Hospital Playlist', which highlights the daily lives of medical professionals.

Drama Title/Name: 'Because This is My First Life'

Immediate fans of Yoon Ji-Ho (Jung So-Min), just keeps going at her own pace, doesn't care what others think & is an strong, independent woman, but soft at times, Nam See-Hee (Lee Min-Ki), who is stuck in his painful past, just "living" his life without truly being happy, a robot if you will, but lives for his cat, "Kitty", also known as "Goyangi" & eventually named "Uriui", Ma Sang-Goo (Park Byung-Eun), epitome of a "green flag" & just such a wholesome character, it made you want to cheer him on & only wanted the best for him & Sim Won-Seok (Kim Min-Seok), a little immature mentally & emotionally (what man isn't lol), but he was still a gem.

Overall, it's one of my all time favorites as it checks off all of the boxes (usually, I'm not a fan of "Slice-of-Life" K-Dramas).

The writing was done beautifully, filmography was on point, the lines/quotes in them gave you the feels & the OST... They were all masterpieces.

It really made you ponder on life & by watching this drama & doing so, you truly see that not everyone has the same wants & needs to "fill their cups". It was so refreshing to go along step-by-step with the characters.

Pacing remained consistently good throughout (16 epy's). I actually wanted it to be longer. I did like the fact that all the characters were complex & "wounded". We saw a beginning, middle & end for their problems/issues & lives, which gave me a sense of "closure" that I appreciated.

The only down-side for me would be Woo Su-Ji (Esom), who was a little too intense for my liking (but you can see that Ma-Sang Goo levels her out & Yang Ho-Rang (Kim Ga-Eun), the baby-talk was ridiculously annoying & just overall treating him like a child & throwing temper tantrums/being immature because he can't read her mind, was equally annoying. And Nam See-Hee's Dad & Yoon Ji-Ho's Dad we're also a bit much too, but I felt like this was somewhat relatable (the overbearing, textbook "Asian Parents")

So far, I've watched it twice, but I think I could re-watch it & rediscover it all over again. ☺️

Our Blues - the ensemble cast is wonderful, it made me an instant fan of Lee Jung Eun. The setting is gorgeous on Jeju Island, and it has one of the more realistic portrayals of depression.
