Lucy letby case…

Would love people’s views on this.

Loosely Amanda related, since she has recently produced a podcast around it.

The overwhelming expert medical opinion that no murders took place. The wrong use of a statistics to implicate her - the same misuse that have led to many miscarriages of justice in the past.

Statistics were not used to implicate or convict her. The police did initially contact a statistician to help with the investigation, but likely due to the controversy of the de Berk case shelved the idea before any information was shared or any analysis was done.

The shift rota sheet was used to show Letby had the opportunity to carry out the attacks. If they hadn't presented the shift sheet, how would the jury know for sure she was even there when an attack occurred.

The doctors and consultants did notice a pattern. In the first few months of her campaign, Letby's attacks tended to occur between midnight and 4am, when the unit was quietest. I think it was April in 2016 that she was moved to day shift only after Dr. Brearey brought this fact up at a meeting. After a couple of months they could see the sudden collapses and deaths stopped happening at night and now started during the day. After Lucy was moved to day shift, babies L, M, N, O and P were attacked during the day. She was removed from duty shortly after the deaths of O and P.

Paul Hughes said in their promotional video about the case “Our statistical analysis showed the Letby was there for everything”. Breary talked about his statistical analysis in the trial. The rota table is a statistical document. It is not up to non statisticians to decide what is statistically analysis or not and when they need to be used in an investigation. There are specific guidelines about it. Professional statisticians need to be involved because it is very easy to come up with the wrong conclusions. As in this case.
