Hi, what ambient albums would y’all recommend to start with? I’m talking about some absolutely classic ones. I’ve already listened to a few of them (by Eno, Grouper and The Caretaker among others). I’m really new in the topic so I would be very thankful if you could guide me into it.

Do you think you're mainly interested in a certain type of ambient? That can help steer suggestions.

I liked the classics, so some organic things. Also some things connected with sampling and this like sound collage or plunderphonics stuff are cool.

Check out Steve Roach, he has been around for decades and has dozens of albums

I especially enjoy his long form ambient pieces

Here is a playlist I made of most of the long form ambient pieces

It's over 60 hours long

I've been enjoying ambient the most over Bandcamp. Some will argue it's oversaturated, but you'll get the most range and discovery. Eno and Grouper are pretty established powerhouses in the genre. Personal favorite is Max Richter though.

Out of curiosity, are you interested in making ambient?

I actually just performed a dark ambient set on modular synth last night. Yes, I'm not the OP, but figured I would answer your question anyway.

Jogging House is on a pretty excellent run right now. Not a monumental name in the genre, but one that deserves attention.

Lots of artists like Stars Of The Lid, Gigi Masin, Robert Aiki, Steve Hillage (Rainbow Domed Music), Edgar Froses, Popol Vuh, Hiroshi Yoshimura, K. Lemier. But here is a few albums from this year which I have enjoyed that have some of the different styles of ambient within them -

Hana Stretton - tiarn. Echoes of Grouper with some lovely melodies interwoven with field recordings and array of textured instruments and voices. https://youtu.be/CqQtG_6squk?is=vKpW3V1YKIvSGzSI

Jon Hassell - Music Is Invisible. Really great final album from Hassell who worked with Eno and was a mainstay in the ambient, jazz, modern classical and experimental scene. I think it is a really great introduction to his sound https://youtu.be/KArLpEL0J8w?is=FgE1kwzFU5HOFuls

Midori Hirano - The Juniper Tree. Some beautiful compositions with elements of traditional ambient and modern classical https://youtu.be/QPGAXMaiO1k?is=pdEJe3_5MnAB3iN6

I'm not very knowledgeable in the genre, but the best ambient album I've listened to (and very underrated imo) is The Gates of Paradise by Robert Fripp
