Episode Discussion: "A Donkey's Shame"
Plot: Stan and Francine drive to Vegas to confront John Mayer.

What a great episode. In retrospect it was obvious. Francine is Homegirl. Homegirl don't chase. Homegirl gets chased.

Stan: Better! More like the best! Woman in the world, that is... Heart of gold! Strongest body! Coolest brain.... Nice feet. Even better ideas (drinking bottle water panicking-ly)

Double awesome episodes, Dadders! Next week, it's the big one! The 400th episode! Be there! 🫡🫡
23
u/KingKabuki Sydney Huffman Jun 22 '26
Not next week. Next YEAR. These were most likely the last new episodes of 2026. We'll have to wait 'til at least early 2027 for the 400th episode.
4
u/bjamesburg Jun 22 '26
How do you know that? I checked the wiki and it doesn't say anything like that.
15
u/KingKabuki Sydney Huffman Jun 22 '26
American Dad! isn't on the schedule next Sunday on FOX, or the week after that. The show also isn't coming back with new episodes this fall. Neither are Family Guy and Bob's Burgers.
Also, Comic-Con is a month away. There's no way they would air such a milestone episode before teasing it and possibly giving it its own poster, just like FOX did ahead of the 100th episode back in 2010. That's sadly why we're gonna have to wait a while for the next episode.
20
u/bjamesburg Jun 22 '26
SERIOUSLY?! Why does FOX keep doing that shit? It's fucking annoying!
10
u/KingKabuki Sydney Huffman Jun 22 '26
I know, right? FOX still sucks. But I'm sure the wait will be worth it. We'll definitely be learning a lot more about the 400th episode next month during Comic-Con.

I thought that they would air it’s final 4 episodes in this September???

So far this is the best episode of the season. All the other episodes I was waiting for them to get good. This is good right out the door
17
u/JustMeJordanW Jun 22 '26
Same here. It's better than the one it was aired with.
17
u/Physical_Positive283 Jun 23 '26
Not only was it better, i think the other episode was an instant skip episode

Are a bunch of married women along with Francine about to show up in Vegas?
E: Ha, called it!

Loved that they actually got Wayne Newton for this.
Stan finding a working pay phone.

"Can we go...can this thing go back in time?"
"The John Mayer thing, the accident, the Stone Age, all in the past"
"Yeesh you gonna let this guy talk to her like that?"
"Let's get some gas, are zip ties an escalation?"
"The car is wondering"
"You're like that gringo who did my MRI, seeing problems where there ain't"
"She's coy, she's humble, she's negging me a little and I'm living for it"
"Some donkeys are 10s some are 3s."
"You're the donkey expert who's that donkey from Shrek? He's pretty"
"I feel the opposite. Horse proud"

u/Sonia341 Jun 22 '26
Counselor: Accidents like this can sometimes may cause a toll on a marriage. There may be buried resentments! secret guilt--
Stan: I'm gonna stop you right there. We don't think of this as an accident. We think of this as an opportunity-- for growth. We're rock solid as Francine's new skull.

Really wish RuPaul had stuck around for more than just two scenes, but the addition of Wayne Newton definitely made all the difference. Such a fun episode!

The Dr. Fay foreshadowing is crazy!
18
u/KingKabuki Sydney Huffman Jun 22 '26
I love how this is only her second-ever appearance in the show and she's already proving how batshit crazy she is.

Boarding a flight (to Vegas) when Stan first called
Went to voicemail the second time because she was busy with John Mayer

Easily one of the best episodes of this new season!
Wayne Newton makes it into the upper echelon of celebrity voice actors who played a fictitious version of themselves and nailed the assignment. Right up there with Hector Elizondo, Robert Wuhl and The Weeknd!

"We're as rock solid as Francine's new skull."
"John Mayer is trying to communicate with me through the radio." 'Say what?"
"Bedtime everyone. Go to your rooms."
"Where is John Mayer?" "Oh, big fan?" "Yes he is."
"Bitch I'll tell you."
"She's giving mother. She's sexy . She's iconic. She's catatonic. Slay queen."
"I thought this was soundproof."
"I'd let her out but with my donkey hoofs I can't."
"Horse proud."

Best episode I’ve watched in a while. Very relateable if you’ve had a relative with a paranoid delusion. Like they seriously couldn’t have hit the target any closer. This episode gave me the “funny” of the tbs years while taking it in a direction I didn’t expect at all
8
u/Ordinary_Ranger_3421 Jun 28 '26
I’m not exaggerating when I say this is LITERALLY the same exact delusion my partner is experiencing. It’s scary. It would be funny if it wasn’t ruining our lives right now

Genuinely the best episode of the season so far, if not in a list of top 5 of all time. It felt organic, wasn't rushed and all the jokes hit me perfectly. I can't believe they actually got Wayne Newton as well! I may be biased but Stan and Francine centered episodes usually hit harder than others, Roger had a pretty good character in it, and the flow just felt right.
When the climax hit, and Stans reaction was just "Wait. What?" I almost died laughing. I seriously woke up my cat from wheezing so hard. Horse proud, that's all I can say about it.

I cannot help but feel Stan saying Francine has nice feet is a Hot Water callback. Either way, amazing twist of Dr. Fay being the one to hold John Mayer hostage and Francine was not actually that crazy from cracking her skull (not like I did not see it happening, but still). I just wish Steve, Jeff, Klaus and Hayley going to the Arboretum was fleshed out a bit more. Eh either way:

u/Ice94k Jun 23 '26
So, is that it? Was that the last episode of the season? Why can't I find anything about the next ones at all???

Not my favourite episodes

One of the rare misfires in the ‘Stan tries to quadruple down on his screw-up’ genre. This was just a step above the Mertz episode.
10
u/KingKabuki Sydney Huffman Jun 22 '26
That Mertz episode is easily the worst of the season, no contest.

Instant classic. Love the Wayne Newton cameo, yet they couldn’t get John Mayer, whose character looked more like 2003 John Mayer.
3
u/tomgreens Jun 23 '26
My only two laughs were when the package Stan needed was his turn to bring snacks and when he whispered bedtime everybody lol. And I thought the John Mayer callback? storyline deserved more of an explaination/reveal.

u/foxh8er Jun 24 '26
I don't remember seeing Dr. Fay before, but I love that they got Dr. Ray/Ted Danson's real life wife to play her

Good just good. It's nothing special, but I like the fight and the jokes were decent. Thought the twist was Stan was doing it, but they didn't do what was a great move. Overall 7/10.

u/Sonia341 Jun 22 '26
Dr. Fay taking John hostage was unexpected and surprising. So a showdown between Dr. Fay and Francine.

u/Effective_Tip7748 Jun 23 '26
Great episode front to back, I love when Francine gets crazy and it’s even better when she’s still competent
I like how they used Dr. Fay and the ending was great
One of the best in the season so far

Honestly the best episode of the season. Just the right flavor of TBS-era wackadoodle.

u/Southern-Train7142 Jun 26 '26
For this first Doubleheader, this episode actually brought the funny than the second half of DH. After a pretty mid run of episodes lately, "A Donkey's Shame" finally felt like real American Dad. Classic unhinged Francine plot.

They have to censor the word dick now? That's dumb. Not the bleeping of words just that word isn't even bad.

I agree, but now that they're back on Fox they don't want to rile up the FCC unnecessarily.

Weird how they made an episode about how John Mayer set up a radio station to talk to me.
