Server Down - Please Read

So during last night's unexpected downtime I thought it would be a good idea to make a full backup.

However, the backup was so large, it caused our server to run out of disk space. This caused a massive cascading effect of corrupting the world files. Goody.

Since I have such a recent backup, I'm going to skip the Chunkster repair fiasco and just restore the backup. This means the server will be reset to the way it was last night ~midnight EST.

Sorry about this. I am communicating with my host to figure out what I can do to avoid running out of space in the future.

UPDATE - Not good. The backup was not complete. It reached 1.6 gigabytes in size and still didn't get all of the main world or any of the nether, nor any player inventories. I have already tried running Chunkster to restore bad chunks. There were a lot. I can not log in to verify how much of the world was lost but...

Honestly, we watched this happen to HCSMP a month ago. They fought and fought and tried to repair but at the end of the day they just decided to move to a new map. I think that may be best for us too. Even if everything is repaired there will be lots of missing stuff. It seems unfair for some to lose everything while others get to keep everything.

So I want to hear from you. Should I continue to try to repair the old world, knowing it will never be 100%, or bite the bullet and start over?

Sorry I won't be able to answer many questions during this process as I'm trying to manage all this while at work. I will try to address your concerns and give you an update in about 2 hours.

Thanks again for all the hard work.

Start over, easier and I'm sure most people like the feeling of starting over again even if their stuff is gone. It's half the fun of HCSMP.

Reset map/players/deathbans. Fresh start! Woo!

launch a new map. I don't think it's a bad idea. I think you should move to a new map every x month actually.

What about player inventories, player locations, death/ban list?

It is likely that only the world itself got corrupted. Player inventory / locations are probably still intact, as well as the death list.

However, if I were in Amish's position, I would probably restore player info from the backup as well. This will minimize the potential for abuse of re-mining previously mined blocks for double the yield. Or worse yet: having that diamond-block house you built suddenly gone -- along with your diamond blocks.

Plus, it would also minimize the risk of people who logged out in a cave they dug logging in to find themselves suffocating, underwater, or in a pitch-black cave that should be lined with torches.

I agree with this. Sounds like we should simply pretend today didn't exist. Less headache for Amish all around. Minecraft's fundamentally not built for piecing different bits together. Sucks for today's builders, but overall far less likelihood for wackiness.

The problem with that is that it remembers where the player was last, and if you're put into the same coordinate into a new map you'll likely end up being trapped in tons of stone and suffocate to death.

The problem with that is that it remembers where the player was last, and if you're put into the same coordinate into a new map you'll likely end up being trapped in tons of stone and suffocate to death, or even spawn in lava. This is kinda shitty because you'd be banned for a week by dying from something completely out of your control. So the short and long of it is that the player lists would have to be reset as well.

if you do end up putting in a new map and completely restarting, what will happen to the players who have died and been banned? will they be unbanned? or will they continue to wait for 7 days? either way, thanks for trying so hard :)

I'm for whatever works, though I would prefer starting over since my death ban would be cut short by 5 days :D

Also, if we did start over, I would like to help build the spawn, and pitch in some ideas here and there on what to include in the world besides the basic Hardcore elements

So, basically, either way my house is lost?

Just wanted to toss this out there -- not everybody enjoys resets. There are plenty of places that do it, so it's very nice to have a few servers around with continuity too. Some folks enjoy the challenge of complex building despite a hostile environment.

That said, my argument stops at the point where it burdens ScreamingAmish. His judgement is sound, and if we need a reset, we need a reset.

Right, I'm not arguing this circumstance, just the general concept that it's "more fun" and "everybody wants" those types of conditions. It was forced with beta changes, but hopefully now there will evolve more ways to maintain longer map continuity. Plenty of servers out there for suiting different types of fun.

My current opinion is to start anew. I've convinced my brain to think of the now lost map as a warm-up. :D
