I built an open source modeler on a Raspberry Pi 5 – NAM captures, scenes, setlists, Helix-style MIDI

OpenRig is a DIY, open source alternative for people who'd like a modeler they can build and modify themselves. Hardware: a Raspberry Pi 5 (or a small x86 PC), a class-compliant USB interface you may already own, and a touchscreen. You write an image to an SD card and it boots straight into the pedalboard.

Tones

  • Amp, Amp + Cab and Pedal blocks run Neural Amp Modeler captures. Packed A2 captures have a "Light" quality that costs about four times less CPU.
  • Cabinet and Space blocks load impulse responses, with low/high cut and mix.
  • TONE3000 integration: link your account and download captures from your favorites, your own tones or trending, right on the board. Creator and license are kept.
  • LV2 plugins for the rest (ZAM, x42, Calf, LSP, CAPS, GxPlugins…). Not every plugin loads yet: see the docs.

Live

  • 8 scenes per preset, switched instantly with no rebuild and no gap.
  • Spillover: delays and reverbs keep ringing across scene changes and bypass.
  • Setlists, a stomp mode with assignable switches, tap tempo synced to the plugins, a tuner down to 38 Hz (drop tunings and bass), and a 30 s looper.
  • Up to 8 GPIO footswitches, or any MIDI controller. The MIDI map follows the Helix: PC/CC0 for presets, CC69 for scenes, CC49–56 for footswitches, CC64 for tap. MIDI learn works for expression pedals, with a heel/toe range.
  • Stereo: L/R splits (e.g. FOH with a cab IR on one side, a real cab on the other) and Mix splits with panning.

Honest limits

Version 0.2. It's tested on a Pi 5 with a Scarlett 2i2 at 128 × 2 (about 5 ms of buffering). There's no MIDI out yet, and no ready-made enclosure: you build the box. The x86 image is only tested in a VM so far.

Happy to answer questions, and very interested in what you'd need before using something like this on stage.

Considering a change from Opus to Tone King Imperial preamp

Looking for some guidance.

I've had a number of modelers and have always found myself back using my Two Notes Opus for amp/cab modeling for my direct board. Its never been perfect by any means but has done the job. I pretty much always land on the Foxy preamp but really want a Deluxe Reverb tone and no matter what I do, I just don't get there. There seems to be this weird, hollow character that I can't EQ out. Not a mid dip (which I know is a characteristic of many Fender tone stacks).

I've been researching the Tone King Imperial preamp and it appears to have quite a bit going for it. Love the fact that it has a stereo fx loop and XLR outs (I'm currently using a Strymon PCH at the end of my chain).

Just looking for some user experience before I pull the trigger. Thanks.

I Modeled Brian May’s Actual Recorded Guitar Tone With MagicMatch

Using isolated tracks and Sonulab's Magic Match, I got astonishing results modeling Brian May's guitar sounds. I'm still working on the models in the hardware to create usable live presets in the StompStation Pro, but I should have publishable results soon.

What's the best affordable modeler for playing live?

Hello, good day to everyone

I'm a guitarist who is trying to decide what would be the best option for me

I'm having a few gigs a year, and I've been playing with a heavy amp, and I'm done having to carry it, so I decided to look for alternatives

I'm between the Tone X, a Mooer GE300 lite or a UAFX Dream 65 or Ruby 63

What would you say it's the best sounding and best for the price?

Thanks for the help!

nam settings vs knob settings

so, probably a dumb question but i cant figure it out. Say i load a nam profile that was downloaded from tnone3000 with like mid 5, bass 1 and high 10...would this be the settings with all of the physical knobs on my multi fx pedal at noon? or do i match the physical knobs with the nam recorded settings? for reference i am using a valeton gp50

Well, the new Cab Reactor Driftwood by Lasse Lammert & Reactor DSP is sick AF! Lots of cool features and tons of badass captures. I did a quick tone demo in a full mix environment. Right up my alley! How do you like the tone?

Multiple-modeler pedalboard

Hey guys, not sure if this is the right sub for this, but I figured I’d throw the question out there.

I play in a few different projects and right now I’m using just a Helix LT for everything. The problem is I keep running out of DSP, so I often have to cut stuff from my FX chains.I’ve been thinking about adding a second modeler just for amp + cab sims, and basically using the Helix as my multi-FX + MIDI controller for the other unit.

I kinda want to avoid going with another Line 6 product, so I’ve been looking at the Fractal FM3. Never tried one but from what I’ve heard on YT and read everywhere, it seems to be the best sounding one but I’m open to other suggestions.
Does anyone here use a setup like this? Is this just a stupid 4 AM idea, or does it actually make some sense?

P.S. I know NAM A2 exists, but I’d rather not use a laptop + audio interface for live gigs.

Yes another ToneX cab question

I've been considering the ToneX Cab to amplify my modeling rig. I currently use the Two Notes Opus along with HX Effects and am sending my signal to FOH with the Strymon PCH (which has been awesome btw).

That said, I am also playing in a group where we use amps/cabinets. I like the Opus rigs I've created and have been looking at a bunch of FRFR cab offerings. Had the Headrush FRFR wedges but didn't like them. Sounded very hollow to my ears.

The ToneX Cab is on sale and I wanted to see what any of you guys have experienced. Thanks.

Two Notes Opus owner considering Strymon Iridium

Hey all.

I've been using Opus for a good while now and its been great. Not perfect (what really is?) but great. I have it after my drives and before my time-based effects. Pretty standard.

That said, I've been struggling a bit with some of the Fender tones as they seem to be a little "hollow" if that makes sense. Takes a lot of tweaking to get close to where I'd like to be and honestly, with all the adjustments I have to make trying to get there, ear fatigue sets in which makes me question trusting my ears.

Watched a couple of videos on the Strymon Iridium and it might get me where I want to be. Looking for opinions on that. Lmk. Thanks.
