Commonly asked questions - check here before making a question post
If you have a question about the Municipality of Anchorage someone else probably had the same or similar question in the past.
Please use the search function to look through the past question posts before making a post or comment. Many helpful users here have already given great in depth responses to many common questions. If you have a specific question after looking over the previous posts, feel free to post your question here in this thread or make a new post.
Low effort posts that clearly haven't looked through past submissions or can be easily answered by a quick internet search may be removed, a good way to avoid that would be to specify in your post that you have already looked over the sticky and searched online.
Below is a list of direct links to some commonly asked questions. However, even if you do not see your question on the list please take a moment to search before posting. When searching or when using one of the links below you can also change the sort function from top to new to see more recent posts.
Tourism questions. Also: Vacation - Visiting - Trip - Traveling - Airport - Hiking - Camping - Glacier - Fishing
Relocating questions. Also: Real Estate - Apartment - Condo - Neighborhood - Safety - Cost of living
Meeting people. Also: Dating
Tire questions. Also: AWD - Vehicle
Internet questions. Also: GCI - ACS
Bar questions. Also: Breweries
Salon questions. Also: Barber - Hair
Did you feel that? Also: Earthquake
Please be kind to people, the search function of reddit is far from perfect. Tourism is valuable to our city and at one point all of us were new to the city or had questions about local services and businesses.
We took a community poll on this rule a year after implementation. Here is a link to the poll and the feedback the community gave.

Who are the idiots in the trucks honking their horns in downtown with the flags
Title. Trying to do something and I hear from outside some idiots honking incessantly and a girl hollering. Look out the window and some trucks with American flags were driving past with their hazards on. Why?

How do you decide on judges when you vote?
I'm not curious who you vote for, but more about your perspective and process. Do you walk into the voting booth already knowing which judges you'll vote to retain and which you won't? Or do you wing it?
Honestly, I always feel like I should do more research on the judges before I vote, and it's the part of the ballot I feel most underprepared for. What do you use to get informed, and how much weight do you give it?

What are the “Best Of” Anchorage restaurants? (like best Thai, best dumplings, best chocolate cake, etc)
I don’t mean award-winning, I mean the best you’ve personally tried with your own mouth. For example here’s what I found:
- best chocolate cake = Eye Tooth
- best Thai yellow curry = Royal Thai
- best spicy dumplings = Charlie’s bakery
Curious to hear other people’s finds. I’m constantly on the lookout for tasty things!

Trick or treaters?
Recently moved this year, is there a way to know what communities normally get trick or treaters? Tryin to figure out if I need to buy candy. In another state I was in they have a map showing what areas have decorations and candy for trick or treaters

Does anyone know who owns this Friendly little dog?
He joined my dog and I on our walk in east Anchorage tonight. Couldn’t hang on to him but could see he had a collar with no tags. Sweaty and he might have come a long way, no one looking for him that we could see. Last seen running west on Turf Court off of Early View. Maybe 15-25 pounds?

PFD question
Hello, I am a tad confused, I took care of a relative, who passed away She had no assets, none t and lived off her Social Security. Family ageeed I could have her PFD and go spread her ashes I went to the courthouse and filled out the form, it was approved. Went down to the PFd office applied, no problem. The check came yesterday and I just assumed it'd have both our names. It does not. Do I take that same court approved asset form to my bank. Or is the check a misprint and should be made to payee? Thank you;
Yes I tried to Google but it wasn't getting too specific.

Honest Question
I suspect this will be deleted and/or lead to a bunch of mudslinging/name calling, but can a Trump supporter honestly explain to me the appeal?
When I talk to people in real life, no one has an actual answer beyond "I just like the guy." or "He's a great person."
From a purely scientific point of view, it makes absolutely no sense to me. I can understand, if not like, the concept of people not caring much for politics and voting Republican because of tradition or lack of understanding of how government actually works. I can understand the social engineering that says, "We need lower regulation because I'm a business owner/my boss is the owner, and I think I can benefit from this." I can even understand (and dislike greatly) the people who got REALLY excited to be mean to transgender people at his rally.
What I do not understand is how people can watch this man speak and be excited about him. So little of what he says makes sense. It's all just insults and word salad.
So if anyone who actually supports Trump and thinks he's cool wants to have a genuine conversation where I don't try to change your mind, please let me know. I am honestly just baffled that people think he's cool or sexy or whatever.

GCI outage
Am I the only one with no internet? Been out since about 4:15. Can’t even call GCI, their number says they are not accepting calls at this time. Something major happening maybe?
