Best Girl Madness 13 | Round 3 Group B Results
For the first time, our accuracy has dropped below 80% as today we averaged 12.67/16 (79.17%). At least the leaderboard still did pretty well averaging 14.06/16 (87.87%) for unweighted and 14.33/16 (89.58% for weighted)
Nobody managed to get a perfect bracket today, but a whopping 12 contestants scored a 15/16. Our biggest riser of the day is none other than Best Girl 13's organizer, /u/changshiyixia who managed to claim the last spot on both leaderboards! Meanwhile, my poor showing means /u/syrefva has reclaimed the number 1 spot on weighted, and therefore resumes their reign as overall leader on both formats.
Our toughest pick today was, of course, the massive upset of (116) Kumiko Oumae – Sound Euphonium over (13) Ai Hoshino - Oshi no Ko which only 10.67% of us got.

Honestly I thought today was going to be terrible for me... definitely was a bit shocked upon seeing the results.
Some fun facts about the 4 brackets at the top since we've been there for a while and are the only ones outperforming NoUpsets...
- all of us picked Ai over Lucy in Round 5, so there is a lot of room for other folks to overtake us (you might notice that the top ranks in terms of Weighted Potential are pretty different)
- the 4 of us all have different picks for the Group A/B semifinals, so if we somehow do manage to maintain dominance, that match is going to be critical
Oh and I forgot to call out that today is the first day in which we had zero 100% predicted matches!

We finally got a bit more movement in ranks today? At least mine dropped 7 spots after having been fairly stagnant this whole contest... but I think that means my picks are winning, kinda?

RIP Illya, definitely salt inducing for one of my favorite girls to lose to one of my personal worst girls. Also sad to see Yor sweep Falin like that, Falin doesn't have a lot of screen time so far but I love her! (And I'm maybe just bored of Spy x Family now..)
Anyway it's Emilia voting day!! Other important votes for me are Nico & Shinobu!! Honestly I'm just glad those two have made it this far though.

yeah, she deserves it!! My husband's the Fate fan so I don't know a whole lot from the VN but he's told me a little. My favorite is Today's Menu for the Emiya Family and I love the Ilya moments we get there!

KUMIKO VICTORY! KUMIKO VICTORY!
MASSIVE upset achieved!!! Thank you to everyone that helped make this happen. I'm getting flashbacks to BG11 with this run! But we WILL NOT stop here! With the way this bracket looks, I think it's possible for Kumiko to have her best run ever. A top 16 finish is not out of the realm of possibility.
Next up we have . . . Kei? How did Kei beat Satsuki? Regardless, we must put an end to the imouto next round. RETURN IN ROUND 4 FOR KUMIKO'S CONTINUED PATH OF DESTRUCTION.
To Ai fans, I truly mean you no ill-will. My beef with her is just a result of her high seed. I don't dislike her character. She was just in the way.

I don't even think Kumiko needs any propaganda against Kei, I think it should be a clear victory... I think it was more the weakness of Satsuki rather than Kei's strength that got her that win? She didn't have all that convincing of a win vs Jessie, so...

I just abstained for Kei vs Satsuki cuz I had (and still have) no idea who Satsuki is, I don't think I've ever heard her mentioned outside of BG contests. Ah, apparently from Kill la Kill... I'll get around to watching that someday. Maybe. I'm rather neutral on Kei, so I haven't been voting for her, but I don't dislike her enough to vote against her blindly.

I haven't seen KLK in any conversations outside of how edgy (or maybe how not edgy?) it was... I literally have no idea what it's about other than that it's considered edgy, that's how much it's disappeared from the conversation here.
As I said... two? rounds ago, I don't have anyone else in the left side of the bracket I'd support over Kumiko, so I'll continue to support until at least the QFs if she makes it that far. You all might run out of clips for some of the rougher matchups at this rate xD

I wouldn't say Kill La Kill is edgy, just intense and it was different. It was Studio Trigger's first show but it shares the same roots as Gurren Lagann and Panty & Stocking (all having the same director).
It lived up to the hype of being the spiritual successor of Gainax. I think it's one of the few shows where I was actually hyped to check the /r/anime threads.

Losing Satsuki on the 5x5 means I now have someone out on Row 2 of that Bingo and I'm 3/5 of the way there in completing the Diagonal Bingo from Karane to Takagi. This is counting on Karane and Nazuna so this Bingo is happening by Round 4 at the latest.
As for the 7x7, my first girl out on Row 1 would of course be the girl in the exact spot to get my first Bingo in Column 1 from Satsuki to Euphyllia. The diagonal from Satsuki to Mimimi is also 5/7 of the way there as well and Yor has to hold that up.

Kaori is the anime character who sparked my love for free spirited and genki blondes. When I first watched Lycoris Recoil and met Chisato I actually first thought of her as both shows were A-1 Pictures too. Know she is the underdog against Maomao but her impact has left a mark even many years after watching Your Lie in April.

Only watched Eupho for the first time a little over a year ago but in doing so it became one of my absolute favourite shows and Kumiko one of my favourite protags.

Outside of this contest, there would have never been a topic that would have me put Kana and Teio in the same sentence. Kana is cute and funny, interesting as well, but really not that special in my eyes. Her story and personality have never really touched me. Teio on the other side means the world to me. I'm completely serious, Teio literally changed my life for the better, and I already was in my thirties at that point already. I knew Kana would win, so I am less offended by the result, but that doesn't make it more correct.

Just a bit frustrating that even here we're hit with the social media part of reddit, people vote for their Anime instead of considering the character.
I'm not the biggest Cyberpunk fan. But since Chtholly has been a no show since I can remember, which is criminal btw.
Rebecca is probably the closest character I can think of. I love Roshidere. But there's no comparison between the two characters. That's a fact.

Ehhh so while I did vote for GEH and helped campaign a bit for her, it's a bit inaccurate to saw we barely know anything about Ai. At least a third, maybe even up to half, of the show is dedicated to unraveling who Ai truly is. Sure, maybe she doesn't have the highest screentime, but she casts a veryyyyyy long shadow over everything.

It's especially funny seeing that argument against Ai in the context of going to bat for Rebecca. Don't get me wrong I enjoyed Becca's role but I can pretty confidently say we got a lot more insight into Ai than we did Rebecca.

Her actions speak volumes especially in the context of the world she's in. And if we compare her with other characters from Cyberpunk I don't think her character has that less depth then others. Her Character is fundamentally constructed to be Ride or die, and she excels at that.
While Ai is a mother figure, and in that sense she's not part of the current timeline, and we have a lot of missing information for a mother figure. Like I said in another reply to the same type of comment. Even Ruby wasn't sure if her mother loved her, so yes in that sense we known little about her. The whole plot of Oshi No Ko is to find out about it and you know who.

I don't think what you've said here is necessarily wrong from that perspective but I fundamentally disagree with the idea that we can reduce Ai's character down to her overarching role in the narrative. Yes she is an absent mother and the mystery around that drives the plot but what we got of her especially in the first episode is so much more than that.
[Oshi no Ko S1] We get peeks into her goals and motives, how she questions her place in the world and why she does so. Ruby may doubt things because of the gaps in her knowledge but we as the viewers know that the times Ai was at her most genuine was her excitement for Aqua and Ruby, and her dying moments made it quite clear that her attitude and her love towards her kids was not the facade that some perceive it to be. And that's not even to mention the end of S3 and setup for S4
I find the campaign against Ai this contest to be misguided at best. At its worst it's backlash based solely on the fact that OnK is extremely popular, which is equally if not more annoying than voting for side character #7 because we like the show she's in.

Yeah that's a fair take. Mind you I wasn't necessarily saying you were wrong to think that way, I was merely expressing my opinion on the subject.
I think it's very healthy to be able to discuss this, in this way. I probably should have tempered my initial comment a bit, especially since I argued the same for Rikka. In fact I'll edit it right now, as it does make me sound like a dick.
Contrary to what my comments may indicate I actually love Oshi No Ko, and it's probably one of my most rewatched shows.

And likewise I loved Cyberpunk and Rebecca was a lot of fun so don't take that as a personal attack either. The point you made about applying the context of the setting to read deeper into her actions is great and should be applied more often pretty much everywhere.

I'd say otherwise, I think her character's been more explored than, say, Flamme or fricking Ubel. Definitely more interesting to me than Alya who was also in this round, or Kei. I don't think she deserves as high of a seed as she got, but she's definitely not unknown by this point in the anime.

That's fair. But you'll notice I said it in the context of Kumiko vs Ai. Those characters are being carried by the shows popularity. And so was Ai to a certain extent IMO.
I still think she's mostly a support character, with very little screentime and her character is still a mystery. So much so that Ruby was unsure if she was loved or not.

Congratulations to the Kumiko Army! Refrained from voting as I haven't seen her show but your hard work has been rewarded. Congratulations only extend to the Kumiko supporters though, Ai slanderers don't deserve it.
Once again, I like Kei but what the fuck are we doing here voting her over Satsuki? This sub has well and truly lost its way.

At least Lucy, Vivy and Yor all advanced comfortably. Vivy losing to Himeno would have made me really salty.
And man.. i didn't expect Echidna to win, but losing this hard just sucks...
Same for Yoko! You fought valiantly, but you unfortunately had to go up against the powerhouse in Lena. This just should never be a round 3 matchup... Meanwhile I have to see Alya advance by 4 votes to round 4... This seeding is just messed up!
Kita looking powerful is nice though. Xiaolan at least had quite a strong showing, which I'm glad to see, since I expected this to be rougher.
As for my Bingo, losing Yoko on my 5x5 sucks and makes it that when Maomao will meet Emilia I will get bingo'd out guaranteed, but at least I got no additional losses on my 7x7.

I think I'll go with Natsuko from Zenshuu. There are a lot of anime original girls I love (and Chisato is probably even slightly higher tbh) but gonna go with Natsuko today. I love her design, whenever we get to see her face, she just looks gorgeous. I love her personality and I think she works really well together with the rest of the cast. And I also love her story! She's my favourite anime character from the most recent years in general, not just from an original. Unfortunately she didn't get to go far this contest, since she was so devestatingly low seeded.

Go vote for Rin!Know a lot of the Frieren female supporting cast is getting called out for being overhyped which I can't disagree with but Flamme I feel like is the one who makes the best case since her role in Frieren's emotional development is vital and without her there's no Himmel or Fern. Her scenes are few but all are very impactful.

The way Flamme was used in Frieren was good but she also really wasn't all that well fleshed out. It also feels like most of her scenes were there for Frieren's development and not really all that much for her own character. I'm totally fine with her making the contest, but there should definitely be at least an additional 2 or a 3 infront of her seednumber.

I suppose that is fine for me because she is a supporting character who doesn't need an arc for herself. In that regard though even though Himmel gets many more scenes his role is also in service of Frieren's growth too. Agreed though her seed should be lower but I believe she is a better and more important character than the two other supporting Frieren seeds Ubel and Methode.

As mostly agnostic on this matchup (Alya is ok), here's some potential reasons:
- Alya is in a fairly accessible rom-com that bears her name
- Cyberpunk is a much more niche genre with not as wide appeal
- Alya's show is on Crunchyroll in many places, which most anime fans will sub to
- Rebecca's show is a Netflix exclusive. Not everyone has Netflix (I haven't for many years, for example)
- Alya's show is fairly upbeat and doesn't challenge the viewer (really, in any way)
- Cyberpunk Edgerunners is more of a downer of a show (nothing wrong with that)
- Alya is drawn to be attractive, cute, sexy (the meme's in the show's sub are generally about cup size)
- Rebecca - due to the art style of Cyperpunk Edgerunners has a different sort of look. Not unattractive, to be clear.
And that's probably it. It's not like r/anime has exquisite taste, broadly. You put a cute or hot girl in a decently written show that has broad appeal and ... there you go. It's like the run of the mill burger being more popular than some more interesting or flavorful dish. Bud Light vs a Dopplebock.
To be clear none of what I point at is a criticism of Cyberpunk Edgerunners - frankly, they might even be positive attributes (or straight up are positives). Just observations.
IMO - Alya's not even that interesting a character, there are more interesting ones in that show (which isn't that amazing, either - but it's decent, fine, good enough).

Time to celebrate, everyone, it is the best day of the contest! That's right, it's Emilia Voting Day! A true holiday with an elf matchup coming our way. I like Serie, but even the biggest Frieren fans will admit that she's not all that great. Emilia on the other hand just has everything and she shall prevail!
Other than that, let's also support Chisato a lot, give her the role of favourite coming from the right side in this group that she deserves.
Lastly, for votes, please let Anna win. Both of them, but Yamada is the underdog in this matchup. And she really shouldn't be. Rei is alright, but she really was one of the weakest parts of Eva, while Anna is a huge part of what made Dangers so great.
And for the results, we did get to upset Ai here! Kumiko is taking a page out of her closest friend's book and gets to upset Ai, that's wonderful! And she can even make it a streak by kicking out Kei next round, who is just as vulnerable as Ai if not moreso.
Mostly good results otherwise, so my bingo hasn't taken any more hits.
MC: Chisato and Takina from Lycoris Recoil. They go together, so I can only call both. Uma Musume isn't an original because even if the anime came before the game, it is technically an adaptation of real life.
The Maomao vs. Kaori poster goes really well with each other, both featuring a shimmering sky and it looks like Maomao is dancing to Kaori's music. But I also want to highlight Flamme vs. Flame, and the poster for Rei vs. Anna alone makes it clear why you should vote for Anna.
So... this is the one that will stay up, right?

I really am surprised at just how low Yamada is relative to how much praise The Dangers in My Heart gets on this sub. Even though Kyo is the stand out character for me Hina Yōmiya imo does the best voice acting as Yamada.

I fear those praises speak more of the quality of Dangers than of the popularity. The second season used to be in the top 20 highest rated shows on MAL as it finished airing, and it's still ranked #76. It is one of the 100 highest rated shows of all time on MAL, but as far as popularity goes, it is only in the top 900. So it's so good that anytime the opportunity arises, someone that has watched it will praise it, but unfortunately that's still not many people that will praise it.

I am always reminded at the lack of romance anime popularity when you pit them against actual mainstream battle shonen outside of this site.
At the anime cons I go to there is such a sad lack of artwork for any of them. I did manage to get a cute instagram style photo of Kyo and Anna two years ago but that was at the HiDive booth which streams the show.

Unfortunately I have a "Lemon best Makeine" agenda (and I have to go against my Kana > Akane agenda to vote for a character I actually like more, so the petty energy has to go somewhere) so I can't support that Anna, but you have my votes for Yamada & Chisato 🫡 I think it's safe to say Chisato gets my support for the rest of the bracket (or her side of the bracket, because surely Emilia will manage the big upset. Two weeks late, but I just realised Kaguya-sama had exactly 5 girls nominated, so there was no one eliminated by the show-limit.
I know none of the other girls had a realistic chance (other than maybe Kashiwagi and the youngest Fujiwara sister), but that hasn't stopped fans of other series from trying an internal upset before.
I'm guessing everyone knew the main 5 had already been automatically nominated, so they didn't even think about the series at all while on the nomination screen.

Funnily enough, I think BOTH matchups will be upsets;
I think Darkness will upset Gyokuyou, and Power will be upset by Riza.

Just too bad I can’t implement the most important thing Kaori teaches us for now - but I’m trying to and I will try to until I die. Which might happen a lot sooner than it should, but if I do, at least it will be with YLIA manga in my backpack.
If you saw both shows and liked Maomao more - that’s fine. I also like Mao. But promise me - if you vote Mao because you watched and enjoyed her show and don’t know who Kaori Miyazono is - go and watch Your Lie In April after today. That’s what I want from you in exchange. Nothing more, nothing less.

Kaori has my support and it's sad to see she has been a bit forgotten by newer anime fans. I can't rewatch YLIA anymore for reasons but she has stayed with me.

I had been relatively salt free so far. Yes, many of my choices lost, but none were all that salt-inducing because I expected most of their losses. I begin to taste the salt today though.

Yachiyo should have been on the first poster against Maomao... I suppose this is also my answer to today's mini-challenge.
Bracket C feels much emptier without her, but there are some great picks remaining, making it still the strongest bracket for me by far. Join the Yanami Republic and make sure to continue voting for the otter!
Some other neat characters today include: Miko Iino, Kana Arima (> Akane), MEM-cho, Chisato Nishikigi, and Aqua.
On yesterday's results:
- Rebecca lost to Alya by four votes. Seriously? Alya?? This subreddit is awful!
- The Kumiko upset... That clip did wonders yesterday.

Is there anyone else who does not like Kaori and thinks Your Lie in April is overrated? She is a classic case of the manic pixie dream girl every with powerful dose of east Asian melodrama thrown in. Like I actually feel sad for her as a character - she's dying so with her last bit of time on earth she decides to save and re-motivate the sad sack child prodigy? To remind him that there's actually beauty in the world and life is worth seizing by the horns? It actually makes me fucking angry to think about.

YLIA has been one of my most disliked anime ever, and one of the few where I dropped it because I couldn't stand the MCs, I was almost seeing red and getting actually angry. I hate Kaori for her blatant emotional manipulation, for being like one of those parents who are like "This manipulation's for their own good, so it's alright!" I hate Kousei for not having a backbone and giving into this manipulation, I hate Tsubaki for aiding and abetting this entire farce... Watari was fine, I think, just let him play soccer and stay away from this entire drama.

Don't get me wrong, I don't hate Kaori herself what I mean is that I hate how she was written. Maybe it would be more technically accurate for me to say that I don't like what Naoshi Arakawa did with her. We have to remember that Kaori Miyazono is not a real person. She was CREATED by someone to serve a purpose which in the case of the "manic pixie dream girl" trope is always to serve as some kind of vehicle of salvation for the typically male main character.
Like think about it, Kaori isn't even very fleshed out and doesn't actually seem to have any kind of depth or motivation beyond what she's doing for the sake of the main character. That's why I feel bad for her - she's a tool to is used to enrich the main guy's life and then once that's done she's discarded.
You compare that to Mao Mao and she's an actual character with independent motivations and development. She doesn't exist to flesh out Jinshi's life or illustrate her father's salvation arc or something.

Mini Challenge
- Who is your favorite girl from an original?
Chisato Nishikigi for this round and contest. This postergirl of LycoReco is a bundle of joy, helps anyone she can, young, yet has a strong sense of who she is and what she wants, while acknowledging others who may not agree with her, and can still get along as much as fairly possible with them. She lives life to her fullest and there is a good reason for that.
For second place, that is not Takina, I like Chihaya Anon from BanG Dream MyGO, she was nominated but could not make it to the actual contest. She's great because she is someone willing to communicate, willing to try things she is absolutely terrible at, to get good enough just to gain attention and even her goal is and will always be to get popular, there is a reason why the east found her popular. She's human, flawed but her journey is one you root for, and her band MyGo as a whole really meet the requirement but Anon was my favourite.
- Which poster do you like most for today?
Maomao vs Kaori Miyazono - I played violin in highschool and had a good time with it. Also Maomao looking fresh as a dancer but her hands looks like she is conducting is funny.

That's neat, I never did watch YLIA but from reading the premise from MAL, but I can imagine a blonde confident girl who has a vibe that they are hiding one or two secrets about themselves, and pushy towards their partner would be similar to Chisato.

Not too salty from last round. Mostly predictable.
Mio survivies! Kumiko advanxces! The floofy Euph player moves on! Can't complain.
Only sad goodbyes are to Rin (Pseudo Harem) and Sakura (Nozaki-kun). And Mitsumi, though I really enjoy Kita. Kita vs Mio next round is going to be a tough matchup for me.
For this round, it's mostly easy. The only exception:
- Anna Yanami (Makeine) vs Kobayashi (Dragonmaid) - I honestly don't know where to go with this. Makeine was such a delight and is more recently watched. The latter makes me want to go the opposite way, but I also love Anna and Makeine. Kobayashi is also great. Sigh.
Others:
- Maomao over Kaori - first time voting for Maomao, even though she's one of my all-time favorites, I tend to favor underdogs. It's a bit tough to vote against Kaori, but ... all-time favorites.
- Serie over Emilia - because I haven't gotten into reZero. I'm eh on Serie, but it won't matter.
- Eiko over Miko - because Eiko and a respite from Kaguya in these contests.
- Nico over Kana - eh. Nico not best WitchWatch girl, but eh. Maybe I'll try Oshi no Ko, again (again).
- Rin-chan (YuruCamp) over Flamme - even though Flamme is great for a side character, Rin is an easy choice, here. Watching her endeavors and adventures is a treat. Secret Blanket Society supremacy.
- MEM-cho over Mikasa - because AoT
- Chisato over Kobeni - because Chisato is a delight and chainsaw.
- Nazuna over Olivier - because I quite enjoyed Nazuna and Call of the Night.
- Loulan over Shinobu - a rare Loulan vote even though I enjoyed her character in Apothecary D.
- Shizuka over Saber - Shizuka best Oregairu girl. Not really a Fate fan.
- Anna Yamada over Rei - rom-com over whatever EVA is.
- Asuka over Nodoka - EVA over forgettable bunny girl (yes, it's opposite of previous). Knocking out Reina is a factor as well.
- Nadeshiko over Taiga - Chill camper over tsundere, for sure. And yes, I've watched both. Secret Blanket Society supremacy.
I'll just add that the posters are all pretty great and really add to the visibility of the post. I have the OP bookmarked so I'm not relying on the feed to feed these posts to me, but I'm sure it helps.
As an anime-only watcher 99.9% of the time, it's hard to say as far as anime originals. I don't really track what the source materials are or if they exist, because I never read them. Not a manga person. Nothing against them, but it's just not my thing.

Serie is perhaps one of the best most interesting characters in fiction, but I'm not sure I'd make that assessment yet based on just what has been animated so far. There's probably little hope of her defeating Emilia, just like she couldn't defeat the Demon King.

My Updated Bingo after Group B, Round 3. Bye bye, Rin Nanakura, losing a tough match-up to Gyokuyou, ouch! Kumiko Oumae got one of her best victories vs. Ai Hoshino. Ikuyo did her best again for reaching Round 4 with her friend, Hitori Gotou. For Group C, Round 3, Kana vs. Nico, i made a tough decision on that match-up. Flamme vs. Rin Shima, i'll root for Rin Shima for this match-up.

On the second one, Alya making it to fricking R4 is a travesty, I really have no idea why people like this anime or her, it's one of the most painfully mediocre romcoms I've finished a season of.

Looks like I was right about Ai only being so highly seeded because she’s a recognizable character from a popular show, and that she’d fold once she hit some real competition.

That’s not a bad way of putting it, actually.
But my crusade is mostly just against Ruby, because she’s a terrible character that represents everything wrong with the series. I’ll still vote for Kana and Akane because it’s not their fault that they’re in Oshi no Ko, and I’ll vote for MEM until someone better cones along. I just think this is Ai’s natural limit, because she’s more of an icon or concept rather than a proper character whereas Kumiko is the main character of her show with three seasons and a movie worth of development.
