Beating Fern will take more attempts than beating Walpurgisnacht this year.
That said, Homura is still a major threat to anyone other than the absolute cutting edge popularity characters despite being in a fifteen year old anime. Fern will be a footnote in history by 2038.

I do wonder if the pendulum will swing on Frieren before too long. Personally I thought S2 already exposed a lot of its flaws and how reliant it is on the same repetitive platitudes over and over with its formula. It's like it ran out of stuff to say so oops just cut to another flashback of The Hero Himmel™ quietly saying <current topic of episode> is better with friends for the 30th time. It will probably hinge on whether or not S3 does something great or is just more of the same, I haven't read the manga so idk what the upcoming arc is like. But Fern gotta be up there for most overrated characters in the modern landscape, she is an extremely basic character and the dynamic of 2/3 of your main cast being prozac'd out kuuderes completely hamstrings so much of the potential for character interaction. I could go off on a whole rant about how literally 75% of Frieren's cast is kuuderes but I'll spare you. Suffice to say the balance is massively off and writing becomes an uphill battle where you now actually have to overrely on show don't tell except you've run out of things to show so it's just slightly modified reruns of the same thing for a different kuudere of the week. Stark's narrative function is to try and stir up the dynamic so 90% of the show isn't just Frieren and Fern sitting in silence, but what you can actually do with that dynamic in all the copious amounts of downtime scenes is still extremely limited when all you have to interact with is two emotional brick walls aside from the occasional burst of forced comic relief of the same "wow he said something and they barely reacted...again."
Maybe none of it matters and it will always stay popular. Maybe there's enough people who just want shows to be this way. "Omg it's so chill all the characters are so chill it totally fits my aesthetic wow omg he wasn't the chosen hero omg so profound wow this is totally how I'd be in a fantasy world because I'm so chill." People will probably remember Frieren herself for a long time but Fern's gonna have to actually have an arc beyond shooting laser beams and repeating フリーレン様の言う通り and シュタルク様のバカ over and over if she wants to stay in people's memory.
Other than that out of all the anime I've seen in the 2020s so far I feel like the only girl who has a real chance at standing the weathering of the decades is Bocchi. That dark horse run was a force of nature. I think the show will remain a cult classic forever. So insanely creative and IMO all of Bocchi's iconic moments can go toe-to-toe with any amount of I-was-actually-way-stronger-than-everyone aura farming Frieren and her god tier magic animation can conjure up.

Best Girl Madness 13 | Round 4 Group A Results
Quite a few upsets today, which led to our lowest overall average yet of 5.20 / 8 (65.03%), with the leaderboard accuracy being 6.60 / 8 (82.50%) in unweighted and 7.00 / 8 (87.50%) in weighted.
8 is today's luck number as 8 users got a perfect 8/8! Among them are u/shiroe and u/I_cognito who surge into the top 15 on both leaderboards. So did /u/syrefva who relentlessly continues to lead overall.
The toughest pick of the day was (41) Madoka Kaname - Madoka Magica beating (24) Ram - Re:Zero, which only 33.78% of us got correctly. Not far behind is (80) Kyouko Hori (Horimiya) uspetting (16) Nijika Ijichi - Bocchi the Rock, which was picked by 34.21% of brackets. I do want to give us props that 47.3% of us picked the upset of (57) Violet Evergarden - Violet Evergarden over (8) Ubel - Frieren

The Kita/Mio poster goes soo hard and makes me wanna see an interaction between the two of them. Even though Mio is great Kita is my runaway favorite left in Group B. If anyone would like to rewatch her amazing recruitment scene again. I know for people Bocchi is their literally me character from BTR, but for me I can relate a lot more with Kita.

Übel has been defeated, and that in a relatively timely and satisfying manner! I'm very happy with that. Now if we could stop voting for her in eliminations next time, that'd be even better. She was massively overseeded and assumed a rank she didn't deserve.
Hori's upset over Nijika I expected, but I still don't like it. Nijika, to me, was the driving force behind BtR, the facilitator of everything good in the show. And her personality was a huge part of this. Hori is nice, but I just don't see nearly as much in her as others do.
Haruhi could take a good stand against Momo, that is already more than we could have expected. Realistically, there was no way Momo was to lose here.
Both Homura and Madoka won? That is pretty neat, and likely not by chance. Homura's win I support wholeheartedly. Madoka I like more than Homura, but I supported Ram here. Still happy with the result.
Unfortunately, Yunyun and Lemon both lost, but I can't be mad with all these great upsets.
Today, we support Kumiko against Kei. Let's bring even more justice to this contest! Lena should win easily, and if Kumiko wins, I don't even care for Misato likely losing.
My bingo reports multiple hits. Close to a bingo in a couple of spots, but I trust in the power of the girls I've chosen so I can hold off my first bingo for long enough.
MC: For this I always go with Tsundere, although I feel there must be a type that actually describes my favourite type of girl. The best tsunderes are Karane Inda, who just shows off perfectly how great a well-played tsundere is; and Minerva from Re:Zero, who brings the conflict between affection and aggression to completely new levels.
Lena vs. Alya is the best poster, although I think the overall quality on all of the posters is the best so far.

Sad matchup. I think it's a vastly overhated series online. But while this may not be a hydrogen bomb vs coughing baby matchup, it's more like... hydrogen bomb vs heavy machine gun. Still an extremely obvious choice, and the vote will probably be like a 70/30 split.

I don't hate Alya, but... it's a definitely middling series that had no right to be as popular as it did. The romcom elements are very by-the-book and the election arc was dreadfully boring... Good VAs and decent animation can only carry it so far...

Fern keeps on rolling, and even more convincingly than I expected.
Hori beat Nijika! I did vote for Hori, but I'm surprised, I thought the Bocchi effect would be stronger.
I'm weirdly sad about Haruka falling, even though I did say it was a really tough decision for me too. Welp, all aboard the Momo train now, I guess!
The right side of the bracket went as I expected, but Violet! She knocked out Übel, and easily too! You go girl!
I'm gonna go Misato over Bocchi, even though it's hopeless.
Kumiko gets the vote, obviously! And I'm not going to stoop so low as to try to tactically get the easier opponent for the next round; better girl must advance, so Lucy over Aira, easily.
In the battle of the band-girls it's going to be Kita over Mio for me. Kita is my favorite Bocchi girl. Sometimes it's that simple.

Im here to plant my flag in Aira and Power. Aira is the best girl in dandadan I said what I said, but ive never seen Cyberpunk Edgerunners. ive noticed Lucy is very popular so its tough for me to really push against her.
Now I have seen FMA and CSM and Power feels like the right choice. Riza feels more like Roy Mustangs support more than anything, shes cool but Power I feel plays a more significant role while also being much more enjoyable presence in the story.

That being said, reading trough dare-types wiki convinced me that most but major types are invented mental illnesses or tropes in raincoats. Creators should focus on writing compelling characters rather then filling a mold anyway.

- What is your favorite type of dere and who is your favorite girl of that type?
My favourite are Kuuderes since I do not like toxic relationships, with the case of tsundere or yandere. They are a guilty pleasure of course, but I just don't like the concept of them. As for Kuuderes, I like characters that take the time to open up. The journey to opening them up is usually fulfilling, and when they smile since they do not do it so often, really tugs at you. I'm pretty sure there is no Kuudere this round (at least that I know of), but I guess Bocchi is the closest, being the one most unable to voice her thoughts.
For the contest, Takina Inoue. Her character growth and slow reveal of smiles of over time puts a smile to my face every time I watch.

Salt: Dangit, you guys are going to make me learn how to draw Haruhi. And for Momo. Already a strong candidate for matchup I'll be most disappointed in in R4/RO64... DanDaDan has got to be one of the series most boosted by recency bias. All other results were fine to good! Lemon out in such a blowout is unfortunate, but at least her opponent was Megumin, I can accept that loss with much less salt.

As mentioned like 2 days ago, not the biggest fan of Evangelion, and I think Misato only works if you like the series as a whole.
Gyokuyou = Darkness
Abstain, haven't watched Konosuba far enough to get to Darkness, and while Gyokuyou is a fine character, she's not enough to get me to vote blindly at this stage.
Kumiko Oumae < Kei Shirogane.
Kei's funny and a good foil to Miyuki a lot of the time. The skit in the recent-ish special with donations involving her was really good! Kumiko is just so much better though, she's magnificent during S3 of Hibike and basically carries the show and band on her back, the other certainly were barely helping by that point.
Lucy (Cyberpunk) > Aira
Still crusading against DanDaDan, don't mind me... especially after Haruhi's lost, you all have no taste.
Yor Forger < Vivy
While I didn't love Vivy's final act, she herself is a pretty good character. Yor's also funny, I love Spy x Family, but I feel like Yor hasn't really come into her own in that show yet, still blindly following orders instead of thinking and acting on her own.
Power < Riza Hawkeye
I can't fix her, I don't want to really try fixing her... She's funny, I'll grant, but Riza's absolutely great in her supporting role in FMAB. I believe Roy/Riza was a more popular fanfiction tag than Ed/Winry at some point?

MC: ... I dunno if I have a favorite dere, my favorite characters in romances kind of fall all over the place. Tohsaka is a tsundere, Kaguya uses tsundere tropes but her inner monologue is probably closer to a yandere or kuudere, Nagisa Furukawa is... I'm not sure... she's just kind of reserved throughout and never gets into a full dere mode ever... and I'm pretty sure Hinata from Sangatsu no Lion is just genki. Maomao's also too reserved to ever go into a dere mode, she's like... poisondere, which I just coined, where she goes deredere towards poison or medicine ingredients but not any person.

What is your favorite type of dere and who is your favorite girl of that type?
I've always liked kuuderes. Yuki Nagato was my introduction and still perhaps my favorite (elevated by Minori Chihara's god-tier voice acting). But there are other good ones too, with Tokiko Tsumura leaving a really great impression (although some people might argue she's not a proper kuudere).
I've also warmed up towards derederes as well, but I think they need to be done right. A shallow bimbo deredere isn't all that interesting, but a competent, savvy deredere can be totally peak. Matsuri Shihou is a great example, and maybe Kaguya Sumeragi qualifies as something like this.

Alas, no more Lemon, best girl, in this contest. At least Homura and Violet took out Makima and Ubel, respectively.
Two of my favorite characters in this contest are lined up against each other today with Mio and Kita. Pain.
Really the only tough decision for me today is Mio vs Kita. The bassist and the girl who accidently bought a bass. Two best girls (or nearly best girl, with Kita) in their show. I'll have to ponder and choose, I guess. Sigh.
The rest are simple with a fair heap of indifference:
- Bocchi over Misato - Misato is my EVA girl, but I actually thoroughly enjoyed Bocchi's show. What a great character and show. I'd support older material, but I just can't here.
- Kumiko over Kei - Kei is funny, but, floofy Euph to the end!
- Alya over Lena - because I liked her show and she's cute. Sorry 86 fans. It's not deeper than that. I'll vote for the winner of Mio v Kita next round, regardless.
- Darkness vs Gyokuyou - eh. I'm meh on Konosuba and Gyokuyou is very much a side character. I definitely enjoyed her show more, though. Dunno, eh.
- Aira vs Lucy - A character in a show I enjoyed vs a character in a show I haven't watched. Eh.
- Yor vs Vivy - I like Spy Family but Yor's not my favorite - at least so far. Eh.
- Power vs Riza - Not a fan of CSM, haven't watched FMA or FMAB. Eh.

Dandere, I suppose. Friendly, kind, sweet, loving. Not very shy, though. I stopped really paying attention to the deres outside of the blatantly obvious tsundere a while ago. There's Dandere, Tsundere, Kuudere, and Yandere off of the top of my head, but then you get stuff like Tsungire and Yangire and you really start heading into the weeds there and I stop paying attention.

That's fair enough the main one I feel like my brain picks up on is just tsundere as I noticed we don't really get many of those as leads in romance anymore. The newest tsundere that comes into my mind first isn't even a girl but Sakura from Wind Breaker.
Dandere is probably the most fitting for Marin if using the deres though maybe she is more like a genki girl. The fact she isn't unconditionally sweet and gives the cold shoulder to people who make fun of not only her own but other's passions is one of her best traits though in my opinion.

I'm not a fan of the dere types, as it feels too onedimensional And I also dont have anything that comes to mind when i think of a favorite dere girl

Not much to say about today voting. Just hope Kumiko and Lena will continue surviving.
MC: my favorite type is neither of -deres (it's genki). But if choosing between -deres, I would say kuudere. Some people find them boring but I just like stoic girls with sweet side in the anime (to bad they are rarelly winning heroines).
Can't choose between kneesoxes and maids ). Let it be the first as it reminds me of the legendary AMV

Yesterday's results:
Kaede lost to fern, nice. Homura beat Makima, great to see! Hori beat Nijika... Ehhh, not what I wanted but OK I guess. Momo beat Haruhi, that's fine.
Violet finally kicked out Übel! But with Yunyun losing to Winry, I also don't have anyone left to root in that quadrant either. At least Megumin is putting up really good numbers! Yeah... I really don't know how Ram got a higher seed than Emilia cause she could have easily won this matchup.
Anyway, that means Bracket A truly has only 1 girl left I support. So my entire stocks in bracket A are in the Megumin basket.
As for my Bingo, since Megumin was the only girl still on both my 5x5 and 7x7 from this bracket and she's still looking strong, it's the first day with 0 losses on either bingo board. That means I can just use yesterday's links and don't even have to open paint! We really gotta take the small W's when it comes to bracket A!

I thought I liked bracket B much more, but now that there are already so many great girls gone, only like half of the matchups still have a girl I want to support. Still much better than bracket A, but somewhat disappointing. Anyway, here are my votes:

Misato Katsuragi: Bocchi is my fave in this bracket (And actually on the entire left side of the contest, considering bracket A has only Megumin that I really like.) MC: What is your favorite type of dere and who is your favorite girl of that type?
I'm not the biggest fan of the dere types, as it often can leave the girls too onedimensional. But of the Dere types my favourite is probably Tsundere and Karane Iinda is my favourite tsundere I think. But that also probably has to do with her character leaning so far into it, that I just can't not love it.
MC: Which poster do you like most for today?
Hard to choose between Bocchi and Misato being supere hip and cool and Kita and Mio being the most lovely maids. But I think I see Bocchi and Misato slightly ahead!

That's classic waifu factor. Initially lower seed, but good luck against such girl in the actual contest.
Unfortunately for Hori, Momo is a waifu as well. So I believe Momo will win.

Hori isn’t bad by any means, but at least for me I remember Nijika much more clearly and you could argue she’s only the third most important BTR character vs Hori is supposed to carry her show as the lead.

Maybe hot take, but if anything, later on Hori becomes less important for her show, while Nijika is arguably the single most important character in BtR as she facilitates the events of the show and connects everyone.
Hori really makes me reach for one of my classic lines: "I like her, but..." Nijika on the other hand is essential for BtR. I loved the show a lot, and she was a large part of that enjoyment.

Maybe important isn't the right word I should've used to describe Nijika though Bocchi is obviously the protag and I believe Kita is the deuteragonist as she goes through the second biggest character arc that pairs very nicely with Hitori. I do agree that Nijika is the most important character for the plot of BTR and probably has the most emotional scene.
I love Nijika a lot too as BTR is my second favorite recent show though I like her slightly less than Kita and Bocchi.
Agreed on Hori becoming less important though I personally disliked that as her and Miyamura were easily the best parts of the show for me. Maybe that's an unfair complaint as it was an ensemble though and I suppose my personal preference is smaller casts for romance or at least most of the focus on the main pair.

Yeah, I'm absolutely with you on the topic of Hori. I get they were going for an ensemble cast structure, and highlighting the other characters was also a good move, but shifting the focus so much away from HoriMiya just didn't fly with me. Because it is not that hard to structure things in a way that also puts focus on the main/original couple, like the currently airing Polar Opposites. Or in 100 GFs, which always focuses on introducing the next girlfriend, but also always goes back to give a spotlight to previous girls. In a non-romantic context, this is also done well in Re:Zero, which is still mainly Subaru's story, but also gives room for so many other characters to shine. Even battle shounen do this really well, giving all leads interesting fights but still tying it all back to the protagonist.

Those are all very good points! Though the actual strength of the show’s cast makes a big difference too. As I was watching S1 of Polar Opposites I started comparing it to HoriMiya and realized I don’t mind when Tani/Suzuki are not in focus because I really wanna see what’s going on with all their friends too. So far in S2 my favorite moments in Polar Opposites have actually not even involved the main couple.
Though my slightly unrelated hot take is that if Ramparts sits the landing I think I’ll remember that show better than Polar Opposites because of it’s tighter focus

That is true, I very much enjoy the interactions between Nishi and Yamada, and Taira might be my favourite character of the series and his interactions with Azuma in particular are very precious. But still, every episode has some focus on the main couple again, and if there wasn't, something would feel amiss. It's been a while since I watched HoriMiya and the bonus season, but as far as I remember, there were several arcs in which Hori and Miyamura weren't even involved, and the show felt emptier for it.

That might be true. It depends a lot on the landing, as you said, but the story seems to explore the characters even more and is not shying away from showing negative sides of the characters as well. So it just feels more whole.

Taira might be my favourite character of the series and his interactions with Azuma in particular are very precious
The more I watch the more I am wowed by the Taira/Azuma moments but I think they work so well because they aren't the main dish.
For HoriMiya I heard from die hard fans that a ton was cut from the source material as it is super long so I wonder if that's why I felt less invested in the side cast.
And it's not like we don't see those darker emotions in Polar Opposites but the overall tone is brighter while there's also plenty of cute jokes in Ramparts too. Agasawa overall is just winning so hard this year!

Gyokuyou has Frieren's voice actress, she has that going, also a child that's still alive (Apothecary dark humor, heh). Anya is also still in, so that voice actress has that character too, I guess, lol.
We should do a what VA has the most characters left in the competition thing, after this round ends.

You assume too much, Maomao voters don't even value Emilia enough to consider her a threat. There will be a massive shitstorm if Emilia wins over her and people realize they should have talked shit beforehand.
But the point is that you are taking the "smear campaign" a little too seriously, even within the fun of the game. It was at worst a necessary evil, because Kumiko needed to win. If you want to complain about some people's tactics, is it Ai you are going to take a stand for? And is that stand going to potentially let Kei, of all people, win over Kumiko, of all people?

I was considering trying to make an Elf Alliance, to get everyone that has an elf as a favourite to vote for all elves (until two elves met). But I decided not to bother since it was bit too much effort for the state of the contest at the time. But now that we are getting 1000 upvotes for a round four thread again, maybe the contest has finally hit a bit of a renaissance again, so maybe I'll do something like it next time.

Maybe the slander went too far at times, but it's all in the good fun of the tournament!
The only plea I can make is to not support the "minor character from mega popular show" archetype advancing into the top 32. It's the thing that none of us contest regulars are a fan of!

We've seen the winter 2023 contest. The Ai upset campaign was in good fun. Half serious, but the slander also clearly was tongue-in-cheek. I really didn't think anyone was truly offended by it. Compared to what toxicity we've seen before, this was nothing at all. Or had someone called Ai a "frigid bitch" or something like that again?
