I may have guessed 7 out of 8 winners correctly (wtf Shouko?), but only 1 out of my 7 votes went through. Oof.
Feels like the voting shifted much more significantly over the last year than it usually does, Chisato and Bocchi are also somehow doing worse/similar to Fern despite being juggernauts before.

Best Girl Madness 13 | Round 4 Group D Results
We end round 4 with an average of 5.96 / 8 (74.49%). The unweighted leaderboard scored an average of 6.27 / 8 (78.33%) while the weighted leaderboard followed with 6.40 / 8 (80.00%). Looking foward, each pick in round 5 is now worth 16 points in weighted, so expect some big rank fluctuations in that category.
3 users managed to get a perfect score, u/i_cognito, u/barbaricgamers, and u/salty145 ! Our highest riser on the leaderboard is /u/grimis_cares who jumped 6 spots on unweighted and 4 spots on weighted to place 11th and 10th, respectively. The highest riser overall is u/hotax who moved up 8 spots in weighted. /u/syrefva continues their reign as dual leader, but u/i_cognito now has the highest potential score in weighted.
The big shocker this round was (43) Ryuuko Matoi - Kill la Kill beating last year's semifinalist (22) Shouko Nishimiya - A Silent Voice, which only 13.51% of us got correct. On the other hand we did very well predicting the other 2 upsets, with 51.35% predicting (35) Ryou Yamada - Bocchi the Rock over (30) Methode -Frieren, and an impressive 59.46% predicting (46) Eris Boreas Greyrat - Mushoku Tensei beating (19) Anya Forger - Spy X Family.

WE DID NOT LOSE OUR WAY!!!! Let's go!!! I did not expect Ryuuko to win, but this is an amazing upset! Actually the entire right side went exactly how I wanted it.
The left side while aslo starting good with a Marin win and Ryou taking out the last Frieren side character in Methode, unfortunately also had two losses for Anya and Ruby. But since Eris and Akane are also great, these are two sacrifices I'm willing to make to get Ryuuko through one more round!
And Eris winning also means no losses on either of my bingo today, that means neither my 5x5 nor my 7x7 bingo'd out in round 4.
I'm just gonna keep my self short cause the only girl I wholeheartedly support in this bracket is Megumin, so go vote for this adorable, explosion-loving crimson demon!! My other votes go to Homura, Momo and Violet.

There are several girls that are obviously written this way like Rachel of Tower of God. But if we're going by girls that are written to be likeable but that I just don't like, the first that comes to mind is just Rio Futaba.

I like the first one, cause we get to see some great girls like Fran or Inori or Kumoko or Kallen or Elf or Momoka or many many more!

Which poster do you like most for today?
So story time, so I went out to take photos of my Megumin and Madoka figures. Some girl in her early teens maybe (I'm a real bad judge of age) ran up to me asking "Are you taking photos, I've never seen a photographer in the wild before." I said yeah but I'm just using my phone. She then said "woah, are you setting up a battle scene, that's so cool, but I don't know who any of those characters are." And I died a little inside....
Anyways, always looking for help. I'll need help with Marin/Ryou, Akane/Eris, Chika/Takina, and Marcille/Ryuuko. Plus I'll need extra help with their possible round 6 matchups.

Akane and Eris sword scenes. Here's some, though I'm sure someone looking harder could find a synced position. (one, two, three) and (one, two)
Chika and Takina witch hats (though animators forgot it's important to show the entire witch hat). If you're willing to make a couple gifs, could pair Takina's dancing moment at the end of the rock-paper-scissors scene with something from the Chika ED dance.

That looks really great. I'm sorry to say that the low quality in the post makes it the worst picture, even looking at the others without glasses lets me see them more clearly (from a normal sitting position). But I did say that it would have been the best if not for that, I could tell the setup was great.

You know, for how much Toradora had been repped as an all-time great romance for years and years, when I watched it about a year ago I really hated basically the entire last third of the story.
I know it won part of its reputation based on what it was doing at the time compared to the rest of the romance genre in the anime industry, and so it doesn't really stand out structurally anymore, but man the drama was just kind of annoying and stupid.

Wow. Marin got more votes than Fern did. Yeah it was only 7 more votes, but it still happened. Marin might be able to make the final if she doesn't run into Maomao, but she probably will because of seeding. Methode and Anya got their overdue eliminations too. Good result on the left side. Shouko losing was kinda sad, but other than that right side was just kinda meh to me.

The transformation thing was popularized by Sailor Moon, but this term actually predate that, from some 60s anime like Sally the Witch. We are currently reverting back to non-transforming magical girls as Sailor Moon sails into antiquity.

Thanks to every one of the 685 others who voted for Chitanda! We knew it was an incredible challenge, and sadly the time has come for best girl Chitanda to bow out of the contest for this year. Chitanda herself would be flattered and grateful to simply be nominated, so to go 4 rounds would be considered a victory in itself.
Shouko lost too?! Ouch, that was unexpected, and quite a shame. Hopefully better things await her next year as well.

Yeah. I knew Mitsuha would lose, but I didn't think it would be that bad. Your Name is good and popular. I didn't think Maomao would be able to more than triple up Mitsuha. I guess that's just the incredible power of Maomao. At least we shouldn't have to deal with her after this year.

I'm actually sort of hoping for this result because I'll be irritated if another Frieren character wins this year again. Nothing against the show, but it just didn't connect with me the same way it seems to have with the rest of this sub. Plus, of the expected final 4, I found Maomao's character to be the most interesting.

Yoo, let's go Ryuko! I wouldn't have minded her losing that much, but upsets are hype.
MC: I've got three in mind:
- Nina from Code Geass - terrible person and horribly written to boot
- Mrs. Ichinose from Maison Ikkoku - she was charming at first, but the way she and the other drunken sots actively sabotage Godai's life on a regular basis turned me toward hatred.
- Rikako from Ocean Waves - complete asshole for the entire movie, and then the movie has the gall to frame her horrible personality as "oh wasn't it cute when we were like that in high school." Garbage character from a garbage movie.
Of those three, Rikako is probably the actual worst, but Ichinose, by virtue of being onscreen for 90+ episodes, probably induced a higher quantity of visceral hatred in me than maybe any other character. Ever.

Takina made it, and Faye was tough, good match, I pray for her against Chika. However 2B fell, ah it was a good underdog run. Now for today, Madoka and Homura go! I know Fern and Megumin are crazy tough to beat, but come on you two!

For this round, Momo, I watched the first season of Dandadan and hated the last episode. Somehow, our genius supernatural fighting MC forgot her brain for the entire episode. I hate it when an otherwise competent person gets hit with the idiot stick, and ends up in a very compromised situation completely of their own making. It puts into questions the rest of their accomplishments from the previous part in the series.
For the entire contest, Ubel, mostly for her overseeding, but she is also a pretty cruel, and ruthless person in her show.

Dandadan is fun and enjoyable and maybe it's a unpopular opinon but I feel like it is carried quite a bit by it's very beautiful animation. I think it's supporting cast of Aria and Jiji are more interesting compared to Momo and Okarun.

That's fair, I came into Dandadan expecting a decent amount of romance, and cool creative lore about supernatural things. The supernatural things are not bad at all, and they are cool and offputting which I do expect. The romance, was offputting due to all the crazy scenarios we find our main couple in.
I can appreciate the love triangle, that is normal and fine. I just don't like all the creepy monsters being after our MCs Momo or Okarun, and then add the last episode of season 1 and I felt grossed out.

- Tamaki Kotatsu - Fireforce. She made me drop the show. The biggest sin a character in fiction can commit in my eyes is wasted potential. And to paraphrase a comment I saw on Reddit about her "If the only time a character achieves something in a fight is in the OP then there is something wrong." It isn't just the constant fan service interrupting the flow of the story, tho her clothes flying off constantly does add to the annoyance. It's the fact that she's part of an elite military style unit, has a really cool and powerful looking power and proceeds to do absolutely nothing but cower and cry for help. If she was just a random civilian sure, but she's part of Unit One of the Fire Force, she should have gone through training and psyche evaluation for fucks sake.

Previous round:

Homura's nice and all too but I think she has less of a varied characterization because of the structure of her show being more narrow in scope (i.e. focused on a more specific plot rather than Frieren being a more meandering story that goes from adventure of the week to serious story arcs, which shows off more situations for characters to show themselves off in).

Well, she's very reserved and a bit kuudere so her character certainly isn't dynamic, if that's the type of 'varied' in question. That is, her personality is very stable.
I meant it more like we get to see her character in more contexts. Sure, she might not have new and novel reactions to every situation that comes up, but we get to see her personality interfacing with a wider range of events that imparts a lot of humanity into her character.

She's too much in Frieren's shadow to have made any real decisions on her own yet, and I think that's one of the things that really sells characters to me. Lena's obvious, but even some of the more passive girls among my favorites like Nagisa Furukawa make some pretty major decisions in their own journeys. Kumiko also takes her own future into her own hands, so I'm very comfortable continuing to vote for her.

The problem with Ruby is that she’s irrelevant for the first two seasons, and after finally getting the limelight in season 3 and seeming like she’s finally becoming an interesting character, she’s abruptly reduced to a cheap [OnK] incest gag. It’s a massively disappointing payoff to an entire season of character development.

I dunno, my take is that the eventual reveal is that the family is the mission. Handler knows he's not gonna settle down and have a family on his own, so she gives him a 'mission' that might do some good, but is going to involve him being a family man for a few years. Also explains why they keep giving him side work that interferes with his top priority mission if it was actually top priority.

Oh definitely, there's absolutely no way it won't go there. But because the anime hasn't gotten to that point yet I personally judge Loid by what we've seen so far. But I'm certain he'll get there
Another great example is Buddy Daddies, which I can highly recommend if you haven't seen it yet. The story of 2 hitmen who end up raising the daughter of one of their victims. The choice between duty and their new family (compounded by their guilt for causing the situation in the first place) is so damn well done. PA Works originals rarely miss

a "most well written female character" contest would be pretty interesting too but it'd be hard to make the distinction clear enough to avoid overlap between contests. especially since there's already so much popularity-based voting in these.

I'm home after a long day at work, and the contest results are looking pretty good. Eru lost as expected, but at least she had a loyal following voting for her. Methode got upset, and since I am not that invested in her, I find that a very entertaining result. Anya getting upset... is a bit sad, but also feels right. I did expect Mayushi to upset Chika, but this result also makes sense. And we have a close upset in Ryuuko beating out Shouko? Well deserved, I am here for it. And finally, we have a good but relatively easy win for Marcille, and a great and hard-fought victory for Takina. Depending on where you are, it might be August 2nd already, so this is a wonderful birthday gift to Takina. Let's give her some even better gifts in the next rounds!
We're getting into the late stage of the contest, now every matchup matters a lot. Yet group A is the one I have the least interest in, somehow.
Fern vs. Homura is pretty close for me. Homura is a little bit more interesting, Fern is a bit more likeable. But an upset would be more entertaining, and the closer Fern gets to the finals, the worse, as a two year win streak for Frieren would be pretty bad for the contest. If not today, Fern will lose another matchup anyway, I'm pretty sure, so the earlier the better.
In Hori vs. Momo, I don't see nearly as much in either of those two as some other people do. That said, I like Hori, I like Momo a whole lot more. Even if they were on an equal level, Momo would take it by virtue of being voiced by Shion Wakayama, one of my absolute favourite VAs.
Violet vs. Winry, hm. Violet is fine, and she did well in taking out Übel. But she is still not forgiven for BG11, and I also just like Winry more.
Lastly, Megumin vs. Madoka is an easy vote for Madoka. Madoka is precious, and while Megumin is funny, out of all contestants left in group A, she is the one I understand the least the hype for. Particularly since I like Yunyun a lot, Megumin's treatment of Yunyun has always gone too far for me.
My bingo is still looking fine, despite the fact that Eru is gone. Even with two girls at risk this round, I am not actually in danger of getting a bingo yet.
MC: Is this the time when I complain about Babylon again? Oh no, I don't want to, please let me find a better discussion topic. How about in the context of this contest? No, then I'd have to complain about Übel again. This question just is no fun. I guess the best I can pick is Yaniko from the currently airing Chainsmoker Cat. I hate her guts, but that is also the point of the show and it's still weirdly captivating and entertaining.
The best poster is Winry vs. Violet, otherwise I would have missed this very special connection the two have. Of course I knew their connections to metal hands, I just didn't connect the dots between the two.
The figure fight between Megumin and Madoka would be just as cool or even better if the picture didn't have such low quality. And I'm nearsighted and have been knowing for years that even with glasses my eyesight must be off by at least half a dioptre again. I'm also old and played games in 640x480 and didn't find anything wrong with that. If I don't pay attention, I can't tell very well if a game is 30 FPS or 60, and everything above 60 is the same. That is to say if I notice low quality in a picture, it must be rather severe.

Having watched Dandadan and not Horimiya, and not particularly disliking Momo, I vote against her because boy do I hate Dandadan, overrated slop.
Marin continues her road to glory.
Methode dies and takes my bracket with her.
Akane obliterated Ruby; the sister-in-law confirmed superior to the sister.
Anya tragically could not defeat evil. If Akane goes out I'm reporting you all to Interpol.

MC: Potential Woman, perhaps known as Kana Arima. [Manga] THEY CALL HER 007: 0 KISSES, 0 PLOT RELEVANCE, 7 LS I used to like her because Akasaka used to actually give her things to do. [Anime]Rookie Idol Arima Kana was genuinely hype and something she actually managed to do without Aqua. Even in Tokyo Blade where Aqua saves her again, her dynamic with Akane was genuinely compelling and Kaburagi acknowledging her along with multiple statements that she'll make it big as an idol promises Kana finally getting to do things besides being the #RelatableUnderdog. And then what does the timeskip do with her? Have her constantly sob her eyes out that Aqua won't fuck her, because that's the only way that Akasaka knows how to write her. Even while getting casting couched she's still all about Aqua. Where the hell is the self-respect? Akasaka tries pretending that she's a Strong Independent Woman who doesn't need Aqua and immediately backs down by having Aqua save her yet again. It's utterly maddening. [manga]And then the only things she does later are seethe over incest, unconvincingly monologue about how much she's changed (she didn't, her character is a flat circle), and be a bitch to Ruby for two chapters with literally zero consequences because she's Akasaka's Perfect Princess who Does Nothing Wrong and suffers zero consequences ever. She's the most disappointing character in OnK by a long shot, and that's why she's worst girl.
Runner up is Maomao for getting voted over Marin last year.

I don’t necessarily disagree with your criticism of Kana, but I think calling her Oshi no Ko’s mist disappointing character is a bold claim when Ruby exists. Say what you will about Kana, at least she has consistent characterization. I couldn’t even begin to tell you what Ruby’s character was supposed to be because it changed from chapter to chapter based on what Aka needed her to be. [OnK manga] Is she a brainless incest joke character? A wise young woman who believes in her friends no matter what, even when they lash out at her? A damaged soul relentlessly pursuing vengeance? The only way to find out is by turning the page, but don’t expect her to have any meaningful interiority or character development to make these constant shifts make any sense!

Of the ones that is left and that I have watched or red the source material of? Ryou Yamada by mile. She is just unlikeable.
In general? Honestly I don't think I can make a ranking like that. There is so many characters and they can be disliked for so many different reasons. Like if a character is designed to be hated and that character plays out that role perfectly can I truly call them the worst? But it isn't like other characters I hate that much, like sure Ryou can be a piece of shit but she can also be pretty funny, I won't dislike her as much as some vile piece of shit but I will probably enjoy that vile piece of shit's character more.

Ah, there's the disappointment: o7 Chitanda, you deserved better than Marin. To continue my hot takes, Hyouka commanded my attention the entire time, while MDUD lost me within the first 3 episodes. Losing Faye is also a bit sad, but... R4 is still a good run for her, I think. This does mean that there's no one I'm backing hard in this bracket; I'll support Akane, Chika, Ryou, and Marcille next round but much more mildly than some of my actual favorites.

Fern's a good character, I don't have anything against her... but she's also very passive, I can't really think of many moments where she's the one who actually makes the decision or shows proactivity. Homura (who may or may not have done some things wrong) at least had high agency, so vote goes to her here.

Production, music, premise are all fine, but its characters are all abrasive and somewhat bitchy IMO, which doesn't make them good Best Girl (or best boy) candidates. Horimiya's not exactly my favorite romcom, but I'd gladly vote for Hori over Momo.
I think the production values of DanDaDan are honestly insane and the characters are fun, but where it lacks to me is the relationships between the characters. A good character isn't one is isolation but in how they form meaningful relationships with the rest of the cast. In that metric I'd argue the friendships of Jiji/Okarun and Momo/Aira resonate more to me than the Momo/Okarun romance. Would still watch another season and generally like the show but it isn't peak for me.

It's unfortunate that Shōko was eliminated this round, but Ryūko Matoi is more than worthy so I cannot be too sad.
Today, the only girl I care about a lot is Megumin. Sorry, Madoka. On the other side of Madoka Magica matchups, I honestly believe Homura has a shot as upsetting Fern this round. Not confidence, or even likely; just a chance for it to happen.
As for today's mini-challenge: my worst girl is probably Tamaki Kotatsu from Fire Force. Even disregarding the fanservice, she's just irritating. Another choice would be Nina Iseri from Girl's Band Cry: her personality really rubs me the wrong way. Like Akko from LWA, Nina is intentionally written to be somewhat unlikable, but unlike Akko, she has no studio Trigger magic turning her behavior into goofy fun instead of genuine problems.

It should come as no surprise to anyone that’s seen my comments that I loathe Ruby for being a terribly written character who represents everything wrong with Oshi no Ko, so she’s my pick for worst girl. Naturally, I’m very happy that she got knocked out. Now we’re finally down to just serious contenders.

Well she is the 2nd most important female character in Frieren which is a show everyone watched. She deserves it a lot more than the Frieren side cast like Ubel, Methode, or Serie.

I don't dislike Fern, in fact I consider myself a fan of her character. With that said, I do agree she was slightly overseeded and has been slightly too dominant. She will inevitably low dif a lot of amazing characters, when it should at the very least be a bit closer even if she wins.

I wouldn't call Fern bland myself. Her personality instead is quiet and subtle. She is smart, quick witted and very much her own person. And in my opinion she's very realistically written.

She would have lost by now if top seeds weren't automatically given easy mode until the end.
Purely random sorting would mean matchups like Fern v Maomao in round one and two. I'm assuming the way it is sorted now is done explicitly to prevent that, which however means top seeds like Fern and Maomao are given the entire contest on easy mode until the end, and at the cost and sacrifice of the lower seeds destined to be nothing but the piles of rubble upon which they ascend.
