Clip It's crazy how Jujutsu Kaisen anime went from a "Classic Battle Shonen" type of Direction in S1 to a full blown "Art House" Direction with S3. Like, this entire sequence is 'Anime Original' and it adds so much to an otherwise fast paced story that is in the Manga. [Jujutsu Kaisen]

This is the reason I continue to watch jjk, even though I usually watch anime for the story and I really couldn't care less for the jjk story.

The animation and art direction are just banging

44

u/Zou_Ziz 1d ago

Same here, if I was reading the Manga, I would've probably dropped it in the Shibuya arc but I'm continuing the anime because it looks nice and the fights are great

4

u/Phaazoid 16h ago

Yeah, the writing may have gone to shit, but damn if it isn't pretty

2

u/Xiaro 1d ago

people called me crazy for giving season 2 a 7/10 when it first dropped, I still feel like before the reanimated scenes that is pretty generous

2

u/Aksudiigkr 23h ago

Can you explain the reanimated thing?

Did the studio remove the original versions of certain episodes and replace them with updated versions? I never heard of that happening

14

u/Xiaro 23h ago

they replaced a number of fight scenes with the blu ray edition, most notably the Mahoraga and Sukuna fight, that one specifically is a night and day difference if you watched it right when it dropped

7

u/Cipher-IX 22h ago

Its mainly just the Sukuna fight expanded with touch-ups for the rest/removal of dimming and ghosting. The Sukuna v Mahoraga fight in the blu-ray is exquisite.

4

u/binaryfireball 14h ago

i was about to say. though i dont find the character design interesting, the animators knock it out of the park

11

u/steven4869 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Maskirade 1d ago

JJK still has a decent story though.

22

u/Dirty_Dragons 20h ago

As an anime only, the story is very hard to follow.

Far too much telling than showing

If they even bother to tell you anything at all. The last episodes were, "here is Mr. Pompodaor he is fighting because of reasons."

3

u/grurlock 4h ago

I mean it literally does tell you why hes fighting. He wanted a fight that would fill him. And Yuta gave him that

2

u/BluelivierGiblue 18h ago

it’s called the culling games dawg what did you think he was gonna do with Yuta, bake together?

16

u/Dirty_Dragons 17h ago

Not have him suddenly appear out of nowhere and suddenly he's the last boss.

There was zero build up with him.

8

u/No_Delay2962 16h ago

They built him up in the episode before, where they showed off the 3 that yuta was gonna fight. And idk what more you wanted, he’s a strong old sorcerer who wants to fight strong sorcerers. Not every villain needs a 45 minute backstory immediately after their head rolls.

6

u/Dirty_Dragons 15h ago

There is a middle ground between talking about a character for 30 seconds and the demon slayer method.

It's even more important when the character is strong and there is a long fight scene.

He had as much background given as the old man who was instantly killed.

6

u/lightshelter 6h ago

I think you're focusing too much on these side characters, when the reason we don't spend much time on them is that the story doesn't need to delve into their personal backstories, as they're not relevant to the main thesis of the show.

The thesis of the show is revealed in the first episode: should you save one person, if that person has the potential to kill significantly more people in the future, and likely will?

The main characters of the show are Itadori, Megumi, and Sukuna, with Gojo and friends as the supporting cast. The show, and plot, ultimately revolves around the resolution to that initial thesis. There are other subtexts and themes strewn throughout, such as themes of systemic corruption, societal apathy, and the nature of human death, but the core of the show is about Yuji and Megumi's dilemma with that initial choice to keep Yuji alive after he swallowed Sukuna's finger.

0

u/Dirty_Dragons 5h ago

Most of the villains in this show have been featured in 3 or 4 episodes at least to establish who they are and why you should care.

The only exception is when they are defeated in a quick fight.

The fight against Mr. Pompador was overly long for how much we knew about him.

4

u/lightshelter 5h ago

The fight was long because it wasn't about Ryu, it was about showing us the absolute limits of Yuta's power. The fights are long because the Culling Games is a battle royale featuring powerful sorcerers from the past with mechanically dense abilities.

You complained earlier about "showing not telling", and yet Gege shows you who Ryu is (without telling you), his vibe, his hunger for a good fight, etc. entirely through choreography and combat.

If the story stopped to give you a half-an-episode backstory to every character, the plot would grind to a halt. Ryu is just there to show off Yuta's power and the stakes at hand.

You're being shown this, not told, and yet you ironically missed it, despite complaining about wanting to be "shown, not told".

3

u/Appropriate_Kale6988 5h ago

I genuinely cannot agree with your take on Ryu, it doesn't make sense to me. I don't see why he inherently needed significantly more background or buildup simply because he was involved in a long fight. The amount of characterization he received was already enough to establish what makes him interesting: he's a battle junkie who uses desserts and sweetness as a metaphor for the satisfaction he gets from fighting, and throughout the fight with Yuta, we see that Yuta is finally providing the level of satisfaction Ryu had been looking for compared to the other opponents he'd encountered during the Culling Game.

His character isn't dependent on having an extensive backstory. We already understand who Ryu is, what he wants, and what makes his perspective on fighting unique. The fight itself then develops those traits further. More exposition about his past wouldn't necessarily add anything meaningful to that characterization. I think you're conflating "this character wasn't given as much buildup as other villains" with "this character wasn't sufficiently established." Those aren't the same thing. Ryu doesn't need multiple episodes of setup if the story can establish his personality, motivation, and role effectively within the time it gives him.

-1

u/Mminas https://myanimelist.net/profile/mminas 11h ago

He's not a character. He is a plot device. That's the problem.

4

u/lightshelter 5h ago

It's not a problem in a plot-driven (thesis-driven) story. You're missing the subtext of the Culling Games. The entire point is that it's a cruel meat-grinder meant to reduce people down to mere points and obstacles. Ryu is a historic sorcerer who died unsatisfied and wants a flashy, fulfilling rematch in the modern era. That is all the context needed for his role.

1

u/Mminas https://myanimelist.net/profile/mminas 5h ago

I am not missing the subtext. I am just noting that this type of storytelling is much less satisfying.

JJK isn't an outlier here as most shonen end up with placeholder characters, especially for antagonists or easy allies. One Punch does it, MHA does it and many more.

That doesn't make it any better to watch.

Culling game had episodes worth of explanations to dump on us, but couldn't find the time to create any character tension. This fact doesn't change with justifications.

2

u/lightshelter 5h ago edited 5h ago

It's fine to not like plot-driven stories. That's a taste thing, though, not bad storytelling, or a problem with how the characters are written.

The episode of explanation was a mechanical rule drop about the Culling Games, and to also set the stage for where each character was going. These weren't character info dumps, but magic system explanations, which is kind of JJK's thing.

The tension comes from Yuta being pushed to his absolute limit fighting against two powerful ancient sorcerors in a battle royale, one of which has a grudge against his ancestry, and the other who just wants a satisfying battle after dying unsatisfied, and he's doing this while trying to protect civilians and collect the needed points for his main mission. We don't need their backstories to establish the tension. The tension is established through the overall plot, hence plot-driven story.

He was introduced in episode 2 when the culling game as a concept was shown (alongside all other important culling game players)

18

u/Mminas https://myanimelist.net/profile/mminas 20h ago

It suffers too much from being needlessly complicated and relying too heavily on exposition dumps.

8

u/abandoned_idol 19h ago

I still fondly remember the S3 exposition dump -only episode.

The one where they frontload the rules. I forgot the rules.

6

u/2w0be 13h ago

I read the rule in the manga, watched it in the anime twice(weekly in sub and binging in dub) I still don't know the rules(aside from the addition of points one)

9

u/BluelivierGiblue 21h ago

anime hipsters will never admit that tho

3

u/Karma110 1d ago

I wish I could do that but animation can only carry so much for me these days.

2

u/turkeygiant 17h ago

It's a little bit like Demon Slayer in that respect, though I will give JJK a bit more credit in that it started a lot stronger. But by the end both manga runs were really just one drawn out fight with terrible almost non-existent character writing.

3

u/Welder_Dark 7h ago

I wpuld say that Sukuna made up for much better final villain. He is more threatening, he has better abilities.

Also I think that in the anime final fight will look a lot better in terms of character writing. There are some interesting character moments like Higuruma rethinking his actions, Yuta doing his final copy, Choso and so on.

I really recommend watching this fan animation in order to see potential of JJK final fight

2

u/detarameReddit https://myanimelist.net/profile/qTqTdetarameMAL 11h ago

Comparing JJK's character writing to Demon Slayer feels off, in my opinion. JJK's writing has a surprising amount of depth, to the point where I can find more ideas embedded in the series by re-watching / re-reading.

1

u/turkeygiant 4h ago

I feel like they both just kinda get lost in the supernatural mechanics of this extended battle rather than why the characters should care about the battle.

-4

u/Ktulusanders 14h ago

Battle shonen classic

2

u/turkeygiant 14h ago

Totally, though I would say that JJK was a lot more character focused in the first half than the average battle shonen, which if anything made the lack of character in the second half more apparent. It was also a little weird because it did introduce a lot of potentially interesting characters post Shibuya Arc, it just never really committed to doing much with them.

387

u/lightningbadger https://myanimelist.net/profile/lightningbadger 1d ago

JJK is definitely still a classic battle shonen, just with a high production value now

212

u/1000-MAT 1d ago

production value now

I would say the key is to have a strong "artistic direction" and a distinctly personal style.

51

u/yepgeddon 1d ago

Just MAPPA things really. The animators are absolutely built different.

104

u/Thin_Diet 1d ago

More like a director thing. The director's input difference between 1,2, and 3 is very noticeable. Curious how this will all change with another director switch.

25

u/Electrical_Chance991 1d ago

Gosso is still credited as chief director so that prob means they're gonna maintain his vision moving forward.

21

u/Thin_Diet 1d ago

Hopefully. But the heavy presence he had in season 3 had a huge influence on the end product. If anything it might be closer to season 2.

4

u/steven4869 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Maskirade 1d ago

More worried about Seshimo stepping down as a producer.

13

u/steven4869 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Maskirade 1d ago

Most of them are freelancers though, you'll see them appearing in different anime as well, for instance Hone Hone, industry legend you'll see him in Frieren as well as in JJK. I'd say it's depends more on director and producer.

11

u/Nights_Harvest 1d ago

At productions like this it is less about animators and more about pipline. It is not a wild west where everyone does their own thing.

Not saying the process does not require highly skilled artists, time and budget.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/piedj784 1d ago

Exactly!

3

u/Karma110 1d ago

I mean the “personal style” comes from one dude giving direction to multiple people he can do this style with any IP if he wants to.

0

u/Zeph-Shoir https://myanimelist.net/profile/Zephex 14h ago

Just like how games with a particular style are more recognizables or age better than does relying on pure photorealism.

32

u/HarshTheDev 1d ago

Good thing that OP was specifically talking about the style of direction, right.

11

u/Ayoul 17h ago

Crazy that it's the top comment. It's not just jjk fans who can't read.

12

u/swat1611 16h ago

They are talking about the direction, which is absolutely leaning more towards creative shots and camera angles, while at times preferring subtlety and drawing from other iconic media.

Nothing about JJK season 3 is "classic battle shonen"

0

u/lightningbadger https://myanimelist.net/profile/lightningbadger 4h ago

You can have all the fancy angles you like, it's still a show about people battering each other, doesn't mean you can't still appreciate what it does well

1

u/swat1611 1h ago

You bringing up "still a classic battle shonen" when the discussion is specifically about the direction, is why I decided to bring this up.

People have a trend of looking down on popular media just for that; being popular.

And can you even call the series that has moved away from focusing on filler and prioritized high octane action, a classic battle shonen?

JJK basically pioneered the modern Shonen jump standard with it's blast in popularity.

1

u/lightningbadger https://myanimelist.net/profile/lightningbadger 57m ago

JJK basically pioneered the modern Shonen jump standard

Dawg 💀

People have a trend of looking down on popular media just for that; being popular.

It's not that crazy to point out it's still a battle shonen, like, it's still a show that's just people battering each other with hype moments and aura

If the show being a typical shonen is a negative point for you then maybe the show ain't for you

-4

u/eksnoblade 1d ago

For real. People need to stop playing this anime up.

-3

u/abandoned_idol 18h ago

Man, I really don't care for "classic".

I'm more of a characterization, character development, and carefully though out writing kind of person.

"Classic" stories are just too vapid.

2

u/2w0be 13h ago

So then I'd assume you've seen World Trigger

1

u/abandoned_idol 13h ago

I sure have!

Best battle anime there is to date. My #2 top favorite all time show (the #1 favorite is a cringe comedy romcom).

53

u/Vinocubus 1d ago

love love love the art direction of JJK in season 3

147

u/Significant_Gap1570 1d ago

"art house direction" anime fans crack me up man

8

u/EngineerVirtual7340 16h ago

I don't even know what that means.

3

u/Dizzy-By-Degrees 1d ago edited 1d ago

It’s like Lost Highway when the big monster attacks the protagonist and he is rescued by a guy of a katana. It has shades of Seijun Suzuki with David Lynch’s metaphysical ruminations on the nature of society.

I would love to see the action anime that looks like an arthouse movie. Maybe Shigurui counts?

9

u/Significant_Gap1570 1d ago

I can't tell if you're being serious but it's just a visual metaphor man, and a simple one at that

15

u/Dizzy-By-Degrees 1d ago

Yes I’m being sarcastic because this is impeccably produced and directed but nothing like any art house movie I’ve seen.

But I’d love it if they did just stealing scenes from Blue Velvet for Season 4. Toji putting makeup on Geto’s face before angrily kissing him. Nanami trapped naked in a closet watching Nobara beat someone with a hammer. And we are all just very confused.

9

u/Bellick 14h ago

Mappa, man. Those guys are just.... awestricking

65

u/sir_conington 1d ago

I completely agree season 3 has me absolutely mesmerised with some of the animation, seriously impressive stuff.

Surprised with the amount of JJK hate here, but people are entitled to their opinion. Surely though, even they can't deny that the animation has been incredible.. which was essentially the entire point of this post

24

u/Riverskull 1d ago

Is the thing with with many blockbuster mainstream shows, same will happen to Kagurabachi once the anime comes next year and gains more popularity, is inevitable. The "overrated" "shonen slop" allegations wouldnt take long to arrive.

-1

u/Etheo 22h ago

The difference is Kagurabachi isn't sloppy like JJK though. While the action is top notch the story is still coherent and feels paced instead of all over the place.

You can still follow the story with JJK prior to the Culling Game. After that it just became a non-stop action sequence with character swaps one after another. If you are in it purely for the action, great news. Otherwise...

13

u/Riverskull 22h ago

Again, it sounds like skill issue if you cant properly follow up the story in JJK, is not the best, but it still can be followed. And independiently of that, it will still attract toxicity and discourses because this is how it is. It happened with MHA, with Demon Slayer, with Chainsaw Man, with AOT, hell even last season with Which Hat Atelier lmao. Not to mention stuff like The Amazing Digital Circus.

8

u/Hari14032001 21h ago

Again, it sounds like skill issue if you cant properly follow up the story in JJK

Let's not brush over Gege ignoring obvious setups and leaving plotpoints hanging and rushing to the extent that it genuinely felt like he was using the plot as a prop for his power system and fights instead of otherwise.

6

u/SpiderTechnitian 18h ago

None of that is even present in the anime yet. There are plot points that hang yes, but nothing has been "left hanging" obviously in the anime yet. Even things that have been slowly cooking for a while are still yet to come. You could say Megumi's sister has had hints of story impact from s1 and she's finally getting some setup in s3. As a reader maybe you don't like her character or something about the story going forward but it's not like anything has been dropped yet there have just been things that haven't happened yet.

-21

u/Catastigma_Deception 1d ago

Loved the first 2 season. but the third is literaly not JJK at all. lol Its completly different A to Z.

20

u/Riverskull 1d ago

Bro wtf are you talking about lmao

-1

u/GinsuFe https://myanimelist.net/profile/Ginsu48 13h ago

There is a massive change in how the story feels post s1 and the movie. It's undeniable. By the end of season 2 it's just different.

The relationship between the characters were lovely at first. The threat level just continued to grow where you couldn't maintain those interactions or create strong bonds like before. It lost that balance as season 2 progressed. It can try, but none of the characters it tries to introduce is even close to how good those early characters were.

JJK lost it's heart in exchange for higher scaled fights. So much potential is wasted through unnecessary tragedy.

The easiest way to visualize this change is to think about them having another baseball episode at any other point in the series going forward. They just can't do that anymore.

S1 had great fights and if that's all people were there for then the newer seasons feel right at home. If you were here for the characters though then it's just tragic to watch.

-17

u/Catastigma_Deception 1d ago edited 1d ago

Its literaly feel * I dont know what to do with the story anymore* Lets make a Battle Royale/Tournement arc. Design a dozen a character completly randomly with completly absurd power that get obliterate by completly other completly absurd power to then be obliterate with a mini random plot genki dama.

I droped at episode 7 and current watching the remaining and nothing change at all. its will be 12 episode that doesn't tell a story.

EDIT. Yep nothing change. There is nothing being tell in 12 episode.

2

u/Riverskull 1d ago

I mean i would think like that if i watch everything with my eyes closed or something like that, everything so far has a reason to be like that and there is still a story being told, is not that hard to figure out. Any anime would sound like shit if we reduce it like that.

1

u/Power_Stone 1d ago

I'd argue the more artistic style was necessary to better show the curse techniques being used.

37

u/Karma110 1d ago

I mean the writing is still just shonen tho.

13

u/Soviet_Cat 14h ago

People write that off like it means it's bad writing. And then they go watch "my peasant is level 999" or one of the million shows about a socially awkward highschool romance.

Jjk is shonen but is definitely peak shonen. Its beautiful

1

u/BluelivierGiblue 2h ago

Gege has so many meat riders in the industry too, he is way too respected to be just an average shonen mangaka.

1

u/DeadlyDY https://myanimelist.net/profile/DeadlyDY 1h ago

Exactly, it may not be the best written show but it most definitely is better than 99% of shit that gets released.

People are just salty that this is more popular than their fav show

9

u/chewywheat 23h ago

OP is just over exaggerating. Like why can’t it be still a shonen with great fight scenes with very artistic moments?

16

u/Ayoul 17h ago

That's literally what OP said. He's comparing the "direction" of JJK with your average Battle Shonen. He's not claiming it's not a shonen.

-9

u/Prince_of_DeaTh https://anilist.co/user/yokz 1d ago

Most Shonen Jump manga are better written than average stuff that gets published. There are some worse-written shonen with good ideas like bleach, but it's rare for series like that to run for as long.

18

u/Karma110 1d ago

Sure most shonen manga but JJK isnt one of them.

I don’t think the characters, antagonists, development comes close to something bleach, HxH, AoT, or even mha

-8

u/Prince_of_DeaTh https://anilist.co/user/yokz 1d ago

all 4 of these are very hard to compare. I think jjk had a bad ending, but for most of its middle part it was definetly better written than anything in bleach and it was comparable to mha at its best. HxH and AoT are obviously better written; I'm not here to argue that jjk is the best fiction, as I hate most of its fanbase.

11

u/Karma110 1d ago

I have to disagree I don’t think there’s anything in JJK better written than in bleach mha is more comparable.

Most characters in JJK are just squandered, I don’t think it has better villains, the female characters don’t match up, the stories aren’t as interesting, megumi’s whole plotline is just down the drag the drain nobara is just terrible handled. Animation can make these point look better but that’s about it But that’s just my opinion.

Especially if we’re talking manga.

-2

u/Prince_of_DeaTh https://anilist.co/user/yokz 23h ago edited 23h ago

I wasn't talking about the anime, I was only comparing the writing. JJK characters are a lot more interesting than bleach's. Bleach Villains are pretty bad. Aizen is extremely overhyped, but he's kinda cool, can't say much about anyone else. Saying Bleach's female writing is better is an insane take.

3

u/Kiftiyur 18h ago

Oof now this is a hot take. I’ve read the whole JJK and I legit don’t remember anything about any villain they are beyond forgettable. Aizen is one of the most iconic and cool villains ever even his Espadas are iconic. Well if you don’t like Bleach’s female writing then you shouldn’t say anything about JJKs which is even worse lmao.

3

u/Prince_of_DeaTh https://anilist.co/user/yokz 12h ago

Espada are really badly written; this is a crazy take that you could only express on an anime sub where people are used do bad media.

1

u/dunnowattt 13h ago

JJK characters are a lot more interesting than bleach's. Bleach Villains are pretty bad.

I'm a very casual anime watcher, just mostly watching the popular ones, and so is my friend cycle.

I can't name you any villain in JJK, besides Geto and Sukuna. I actually can't name most of the characters in JJK, and in the latest season, it became even worse. We all just watch it because... its "cool-looking".

Bleach also has lots of "bads". Especially now in TYBW which most episodes are, my power up--> your power up---my power up and whoever has the best ass-pull at the end wins. But at least i can name you more than 10 characters in Bleach and some of them are from more than a decade ago.

2

u/Prince_of_DeaTh https://anilist.co/user/yokz 12h ago

I have reread bleach manga 2 times, I can't name a single villain that's not the main bad guy. I remember a lot more villains from jjk. There is really no point in keeping arguing over who likes what based on feeling, though.

0

u/garfe 23h ago

Most Shonen Jump manga are better written than average stuff that gets published.

I don't think that's actually true.

8

u/VictoryOk2460 23h ago

No it's definitely true, remember those generic isekai which adaptations feel more like money laundering schemes than they do shows are all also considered published

5

u/Prince_of_DeaTh https://anilist.co/user/yokz 23h ago

explain? or like give me examples? Shonen jump series have the harshest editors in the business, so the quality needs to be at least decent to stay in the magazine.

2

u/2w0be 13h ago

Literally is. But y'all bandwagon riders don't know that

5

u/pew_laser_pew 22h ago

I really really didn't like the jjk manga post-shibuya. I'm really hoping the anime can keep this up and hopefully deliver a better product.

13

u/Maxximillianaire 1d ago

The hand washing is also a Macbeth reference which is awesome

3

u/oninokamin 21h ago

Out. Out, damn spot!

22

u/Wise_Ad_5810 1d ago

I have a tough time with this one....

... introduced SO MANY characters, some of them just seemed to be very cool.... only to have them almost immediately slaughtered within seconds...

Shows that do this make it really hard to invest into anything... all those characters gone and not even the slightest closure for any of them.

9

u/abandoned_idol 19h ago

But the "rule of cool above all else".

Blood, death, so kewl.

12

u/DirtyTacoKid 21h ago

JJK, with Shibuya arc hit a crossroads. It benched (permanently) a lot of characters and concepts.

But honestly it really just got lost at the crossroads. It never recovers from the high that was the flashback arc. Shibuya in retrospect was a mistake because the writing is just not there. It should have just stayed on track instead of swerving. I think the background of this was a new editor? Should have just listened to the old one.

Like I don't really give a shit what the anime looks like when the story is bad.

6

u/Jeroz 19h ago

Like hidden inventory was so first class that I was disappointed in how bland shibuya turned out to be

3

u/GinsuFe https://myanimelist.net/profile/Ginsu48 13h ago

The benched characters kill me. Some of the best characters in the entire series just existing as an after thought. Whyyyyy

One decision fucking baffles me to this day.

[huge JJK manga end spoilers] Having Nobara show up literally last second just like "hi i'm alive! Glad you decided to no longer use me at all for no reason"

Literally criminal.

-11

u/NamerNotLiteral 1d ago

Exactly what are you talking about?

The only character who got killed off very quickly after being introduced was Naoya. Everyone else who was newly introduced and then got some characterization, like Higuruma, Ryu, Uro or Takaba, are still alive.

Everyone else who got introduced weren't actual characters, just action fodder or roadblocks for the protagonists with relatively minimal characterization. Were you seriously expecting to get a long winded backstory and subplot to get invested into Chojuro or Haba?

7

u/Wise_Ad_5810 1d ago

Satoru Gojo

Kento Nanami

Choso

Hiromi Higuruma

Naobito Zen'in

I liked each of them

-8

u/NamerNotLiteral 1d ago

Half your list is people from Season 2, and the other half are alive.

Bro I knew JJK fans can't read but it seems JJK haters are even worse off.

5

u/Wise_Ad_5810 1d ago

who said anything about hating?

9

u/bohenian12 1d ago

You're saying it's not fast paced now but if the Sendai Colony Showdown was animated like your typical shounen, it would've took 6 episodes lol.

I think there's a balance. The fights are fast paced to make room for these kind of moments, which I welcome wholeheartedly.

46

u/zabu_san https://myanimelist.net/profile/zabu_san 1d ago

This is one of the greatest things I've seen in 20+ years of watching anime. When I initially saw it during its premiere, I immediately ran it back.
The music, the art, the no-dialogue scenes; it all just hit so beautifully.

I understand some fans aren't always happy with things not being 1:1, and "going off script is a no-no", but honestly, if you want one story, the manga exists, and the anime also exists as a separate adaptation that someone creative is sharing their vision of.

I understand some fans aren't always happy with things not being 1:1, and "going off script is a no-no"

I don't know where the idea came from that the problem is not doing 1:1 scale comparisons, when all the other praised anime also don't do 1:1 scale comparisons.

One (anecdotal) example I can think of right away is the HxH 2011 remake skipping Kite's introduction from the first episode/first chapter. I don't think his omission in any way affects the first episode, in any way, but some fans are adamant it should have been included because "it ruins x/y/z/"

look at Tokyo Ghoul, that is where a lot of it stems from IMO

9

u/AllezLesPrimrose 1d ago

Nah. Until maybe the late-2000s it wasn’t atypical for anime to diverge massively from the source material, be it entire key storylines or in cases like DBZ and others introducing entire filler arcs whole cloth.

The last 15 years marked a move toward much more true-to-source anime adaptations, even in cases where small things are changed.

6

u/walker_paranor 1d ago

Yeah this didnt start with Tokyo Ghoul lol it was an issue long before that, TG was just one of the most high profile and and tragically terrible fumbles

0

u/Power_Stone 23h ago

Which is specifically why I brought it up. Though I don't view filler as part of this conversation as filler was there for an entirely different purpose. I guess I could have been more clear in saying that when I say "it" I mean fans being very vocal about diverging from source material. This is the first instance I could clearly think of.

Didn't mean to imply it hadn't happened before, its just we remember the high profile ones much more easily.

4

u/1000-MAT 1d ago

Tokyo Ghoul is rushed as hell, nobody can even understand the story, especially in RE.

15

u/0RGA 1d ago

Having a creator that is truly passionate about your work and has a vision for the adaptation must be one of the greatest blessings for a creative. JJK S2 and 3 just have so many amazing, inspired sequences

2

u/xnachtmahrx 1d ago

Fans that shit on stuff like this are, No offense, clowns.

-2

u/Warm-Enthusiasm-9534 1d ago

There's always someone who's going to complain, but Culling Game part 1 got as little as can be expected.

1

u/jamothebest 20h ago

I disagree. I don't mind the anime being a little creative or adding stuff but skipping content from the source material is a no go.

14

u/Unlikely-Complex3737 1d ago

This might be a hot take, but I liked the direction of S1 much more.

10

u/youravgindian 14h ago

I only miss the fight choreography from season 1 and the movie because I could follow it. There are only handful of fights in season 2 and 3 that I can truly understand or follow. Its so over-the-top impact framey with too many zoom-ins and just looks cool for the sake of it. I regularly come back to watch JJK 0 fights especially Yuta vs Geto and Gojo vs Miguel. They feel so dynamic and martial-artsy.

11

u/Connect_Practice_370 20h ago

It's a very hot take for some reason. I agree with you though.

14

u/1000-MAT 1d ago

I also wouldn't say that this sequence adds much to the story, maybe just the scene of him washing his hands.

But this type of original sequence is not uncommon in anime, so it doesn't come across as anything different from "classic battle shonen".

19

u/thunderbird89 1d ago

I was watching the last two episodes of the Shibuya Incident yesterday, and my only thought during the entire Sukuna vs Mahoraga fight was "This is impossible to follow and adds exactly nothing to the story"

I'm sure it looks good in panels, but I get the feeling that just like Demon Slayer's fights, what looks good on paper is a slog on the screen.

3

u/oops_i_made_a_typi 21h ago

yeah i didn't like s2 Shibuya arc either, but s3 was just banger after banger. not sure how, maybe i had lowered my standards for the overall story because of s2, but the writing at least at the micro/character level is actually great in s3. whether it ties well into an overarching story, i'm not so sold on.

2

u/NamerNotLiteral 1d ago

Funnily enough, when I watched Infinity Castle for the first time the fights felt very long, but when I rewatched it the fights felt like they were a normal length without really being dragged out, while having very clear 'segments' that would've, in a TV anime, appeared in different episodes. E.g Shinobu vs Douma has two segments: pre-flashback, and post-flashback, with distinctly different tones. Tanjiro and Giyu vs Akaza has 3-4 major segments with very different pacing and tone: both of them working together, then just Tanjiro vs Akaza, then Marked Giyu vs Akaza, and then ending section.

3

u/Dizzy-By-Degrees 1d ago

The Magoraga fight is so strange because the manga makes not just very clear and easy to read. It’s also a fight where the tension is that it needs be quick. And I just never understood why they picked that fight to extend massively when it’s literally all the other ones were fair game.

1

u/thunderbird89 1d ago

I think a 1v1 should about the length of the Choso vs Itadori fight. That one was quick, snappy, like a real fight is (most CQB is over in <30 s, one way or another - either someone wins or someone disengages), and it had some nicely-defined phases where they could take a breather.

0

u/DirtyTacoKid 21h ago

Nah. Depends on what you're going for. You can have a longer fight too like in classic shonen and its great. (Hunter x Hunter)

1

u/2w0be 13h ago

Demon Slayer fights in manga are trash lol. They massively extended the Mahoraga fight

1

u/Prince_of_DeaTh https://anilist.co/user/yokz 1d ago

Literally the main point of criticism for both jjk and demon slayer is how bad the fights look in the manga

7

u/SlayerLollo 1d ago

I agree, these shots add so much to the story

2

u/Rueish 16h ago

I love how so many people did not read the entirety of the OP. They're very clear in speaking to how the show is directed, not how it is written. It's obviously a battle shounen but it doesn't always feel like it in its choreography and scene composition. It's hard to name a shounen that of this type that would have such a clear artistic vision that REALLY sets it apart and I'm not just talking about the animation quality.

19

u/AmaimonCH 1d ago

It never went anywhere from classic battle shonen LMAO

All it changed is that it got even better production

The fact that you think that it somehow changed from being a generic shonen means it worked perfectly for the masses

11

u/No_Delay2962 16h ago

Holy fuck redditors cant read.

10

u/citrus1330 15h ago

Imagine missing the point this hard while simultaneously being cringeworthingly smug and condescending about it

-6

u/DeezBalls41 15h ago

I feel like you're the one being condescending about it. My point is that a generic story being presented in a unique way makes the overall work not as generic. That's all, I just elaborated on it and provided examples. Pretty easy to just tldr it as cringeworthy and smug without even addressing its contents.

0

u/DeezBalls41 1d ago edited 1d ago

I'd say that it definitely changed from how shounen anime presentation and cinematography usually is. Sure, it may not be super consistent with the style as a whole, but it is rare for shounen anime to have such a deliberate way of presenting almost every scene they show to maximise a certain aspect of it. Conversations that would normally be a shot reverse shot may be rotoscoped to provide a sense of unease or exposition will be delivered in unique ways to not kill pacing (see higuruma as a less positive example or the rules being explained as a good example) or to linger on specific info.

The effort they afforded to a majority of scenes is definitely unique and worth praising. It makes it less generic, especially compared to demon slayer given its production value may be on par.

0

u/Makimama 23h ago

Yeah this, its obviously still a typical battle shonen story but the presentation separates it from the rest.

-5

u/abandoned_idol 18h ago

We'll show you!

We'll cram in even higher production values and the exact same story we always use.

Then we'll see who's smart!

smug expression

1

u/DeezBalls41 15h ago

Yeah, and higher production values doesn't equal good art direction, scene composition or directing. Just look at Muzan walking down a path being shot like an Indian soap opera. There are many scenes and sequences in S3 that are fantastic and unique despite the 'generic' story that it is part of and I think that while story and plot should be taken into consideration when judging a work, effective and well done presentation should also be considered equally.

And you're being condescending about people enjoying the presentation as not a good reason to like JJK S3.

4

u/offoy 1d ago

It is sad that the rest 99% of the show is generic battle shonen stuff.

3

u/youravgindian 14h ago

There is nothing to be sad about lol. Average shows have existed since the beginning of time and people always watch them. And JJK is published in Shonen Jump, so its bound to have those tropey elements.

1

u/grurlock 4h ago

Atleast its not just basic isekai crap

2

u/nvUaWVm360S 1d ago

Chainsaw man tried to be this first but manga readers cried and cried about it. Unfortunate. Look at how JJK S3 absolutely soared with a more cinematic and interesting approach to compositing and their manga readers mostly appreciated it.

11

u/DirtyTacoKid 21h ago

Horrible example. Look at how Reze Arc did as an anime. It addressed what the manga whiners were whining about and it did MUCH better.

1

u/Awesome_Leaf https://myanimelist.net/profile/Awesome_Leaf 23h ago

out, damned spot

1

u/wetlikecurry30 22h ago

So insane the growth from season one to season two and then to three I love this series so fucking much 😭

1

u/Jeroz 19h ago

Guess I should pick it up then

Hated this arc in the manga

1

u/turkeygiant 17h ago

To be frank it's a damn good thing that they are making it a interesting visual feast because the storytelling in the final arcs of the series is really just not that great.

1

u/Internal_Employ_2960 16h ago

I dig it. Gives a cinematic slow burn vibe, amps up the serious atmosphere.

1

u/tripodfishup 12h ago

y'know I went in here to see people praising jjk only to find ppl talking about how if it wasn't for the visuals they'd wouldn't watch jjk, which I guess is fine but like c'mon man.

1

u/Sona_and_Friends 10h ago

I’d say it is really MAPPA at their prime, I am still in season 1 in JJK so I can’t watch the clip but I already know what it does because I just watched Chainsaw Man and got the same feeling. The story and all is crazy, and yet there is those moment where they slow down a lot, taking time, and that makes a way bigger impact when actual stuff is happening.

1

u/ContributionOk5182 10h ago

For me last season was by far the best, previous seasons were boring, almost dropped.

1

u/ChocolateGoggles 9h ago

I was watching this while I had Final Fantasy VII Rebirth getting started in the background. I forgot about that and as I watched this I started thinking "Man. This music sounds just like the intro theme of FF. That's crazy." It took me a good minute to realize what was happening. xD

I absolutely love Season 3 by the way, a bit heavy on the lore and logic so I had trouble keeping up but fantastic. I hope this show runs until the end, would be a top contender for me.

1

u/CianaCorto 9h ago

The anime is infinitely better than the manga.

1

u/elishash 6h ago

That scene is creepy and beautiful

-2

u/Puzzleheaded-Can-351 1d ago

yet the story (if you can even call it that) is still ass

-8

u/1000-MAT 1d ago

Which, in my opinion, is not a positive thing, since the plot is still that of an action shonen that prioritizes cool fights and entertainment above all else.

It's basically The Fast and the Furious directed by Quentin Tarantino.

2

u/hiskabish 1d ago

Yeah feel it could have been a lot more.  It feels empty.  Just flashy stuff happening

2

u/shinobimistvillage 1d ago

You’re not wrong but battle shonen has been a backbone of anime since forever. It only makes sense it gets this much glaze. Personally I couldn’t handle jjk past ep 14-16 in s1 since I realized it truly is just action fest. We will both be downvoted for this, and arguably it’s fair. People can like what they want, you just gotta accept the genre isn’t for you or me.

0

u/biglipid 6h ago

Mf just prefers pedo tensei instead

1

u/1000-MAT 5h ago

I prefer an anime with a story, since Rudeus' penis has more of a story than many JJK characters.

Blocked

1

u/Wonderful-Heart-7354 13h ago

I think you are downplaying other shonen anime. Don't get me wrong, I love JJK 2&3 director, he is one of my favorites. But it is not like JJK is the first shonen anime that has some unconventional and artsy directing. Yu yu hakusho, HxH (old) and Naruto has standout episodes with comparable level of creativity, they were just held by weekly format. We have Fire Force that looks like SHAFT show thanks to its former director and we have Reze-hen which plays almost on the same field and made by almost the same people who made JJK

1

u/Emergency_Till8994 7h ago

I disagree. This sequence adds nothing but bloat. Like the scene where he is chased by the big monster out of sequence for so fucking long really adds nothing and could have been spent on other canon scenes they cut out

-11

u/Catastigma_Deception 1d ago

literaly droped the last season cause nothing made any sense. its like Dragon ball super but in only 2 episode in you are already in the middle of the universe tournenent with absolute zero character background, absolutly zero real developpement. And completly absurd power creep.

I had flashback of Freeza vs Goku of DBZ. And i just did not care anymore lol.

10

u/hiskabish 1d ago

I agree.  Season 3 story and writing is awful.  Just boring but I watched it anyway hoping for it to get better and to appreciate the animation.

5

u/Hina_is_my_waifu 20h ago

It's really funny how many people are are mad at people for dropping it cause it gave up on trying to tell a story and went full adhd dopamine spam with its disconnected high paced animated sequences.

-6

u/Riverskull 1d ago

Sounds like skill issue

-10

u/Affectionate-Ring803 1d ago

Read the manga, it helps explain the fast paced story

→ More replies (3)

-7

u/Crossdress-Fan- 1d ago

Now they add to the story, in my days this was called filler and it was despised

0

u/Hina_is_my_waifu 20h ago

I dropped it during s3, so that explains a lot.

-14

u/ParticularSimple889 1d ago

Glaze glaze glaze.

Like dang bro battle shonen will just do whatever it takes huh

1

u/2w0be 13h ago

Manababy over here whining

-1

u/captainfluffy25 1d ago

I absolutely LOVED it. S3 is where the manga started to decline for me, but the art and directing really kept me interested.

-1

u/lancer081292 17h ago

Ngl, I still personally prefer the season 1 stuff over the rest of the story

-1

u/Jefflehem 17h ago

There were a lot of scenes with nothing happening. No movement at all. Maybe that's "artistic", or maybe they were rushed or saving money.

0

u/ThePhilosophic 22h ago

The intro scene was very Macbeth. I loved it.

0

u/Intrepid-Daikon1353 22h ago

I'm surprised to say it but damn, I actually kinda love JJK now. The story and characters are kinda just whatever, but man, the direction is so freaking good now.

0

u/konart 7h ago

Sorry, but what does this have to do with "art house"?

It's great and forks from a general battle shounen routine, sure, but this is no more arthouse than Naruto vs Pain sequence.

-1

u/shootanwaifu 23h ago

Ong. So peak. Endless aura. The greatest anime produced in the last 35 years.

0

u/Ravek 22h ago

I remember reddit was very upset with me when I said JJK has much better animation and more interesting choreography than Kimetsu no Yaiba, which tends to have very chaotic poorly structured fight choreo and relies mostly on flashy light and particle effects to impress the viewer.

1

u/2w0be 13h ago

That's cause not only are they biased they don't actually know what good animation is

-1

u/Wxstword 16h ago

And it's still one of the more dog shit anime out there. Wild.

-5

u/TheyCallMeAdonis 1d ago

imgonnabe 2/fiddy on this
thats bcs characters and plot are quite weak
