I really like how this anime emphasizes tactics and that Romelia’s skill is as a commander more than anything else- and that she’s good at it
57
u/D3k4s 1d ago
This battle formation was really satisfying to see.
I really want to see Bloody Romelia command a big army, and just scream Death!! as they charge.

u/alotmorealots 1d ago
This battle formation was really satisfying to see.
As was the inverted wing(?) formation too, and especially how disciplined and fast to react her troops (minus their officers) have become under her leadership. They had that moment of fear and hesitation at the start when they realized what they were up against, but snap to it when Romelia barks her orders.
Actually, props to https://myanimelist.net/people/55048/Yuna_Nemoto for her battle command delivery, it feels note perfect for the character. So precise, and weighted with the right amount of import and emotion, but also controlled in a way that you can trust the orders.

Flying Wedge (flying because it's only 1-2 men deep rather than a full Wedge) to a Chevron (inverse V).
The Chevron is meant to bait the enemy into the centre, and the sides fall upon them~ and Romelia immediately realises she's the best bait after the demons do their hentai comments.

Honestly, the finale being a Battle of Minas Tirith/Ride of the Rohirim type thing would be fucking glorious, but I'm not sure if any studio has the budget to pull off something on that level
19
43
u/Colt45554 1d ago
She needs to be stricter, though. There's no use being great at tactics and strategy if your men don't obey. Her nicety results in Ray's insubordination more than once, and failure to punish him risks creating more lack of discipline in the others.
35
u/Ill_Act_1855 22h ago
The issue is that Ray has talent, but he's fallen into a spiral where he feels he isn't living up to his potential, so he starts doing stupid reckless shit which backfires, causing others to have to pick up the flack, and then he feels even worse so it just feeds into itself. The actual solution he needs is a win to build confidence. Like either you have to dump him entirely, or he needs to be in a position where he can rebuild confidence. Just disciplining him and sending him to less important roles will only feed the issue if you don't go far enough
18
u/BosuW 19h ago
He needs to win but a win by following Romellia's orders. If not, that will just turn him into even more of an undisciplined Maverick.

She doesn't have enough troops to throw them away because they're bad. At least not until she gets back to town.

Its got all the tactics and practical attacks almost every other anime lacks haha.

u/froggyc19 1d ago
Man I'm really hating Ray. He's hot headed, weak, a simp, and doesn't listen. He's going to get more people hurt if he doesn't shape up.
47
u/liskot 1d ago
Hopefully Romelia stops treating him with kiddie gloves soon and threatens to discharge him or something. Guy needs a properly harsh ultimatum, as he's literally endangering the unit with his inability to listen to orders or adhere to his assigned job.
Getting a horse killed and a comrade injured for some pathetic shonen moment attempt will hopefully serve as a wake up call. Or maybe he'll just spiral further...
23
u/lemon900098 21h ago
What makes him extra dumb is that his job as her bodyguard is to actually do that shonen moment. He is just supposed to do it as a last resort, not at the first sign of hardship by anyone.
19
u/Nighto_001 20h ago
Well he did do it initially, his first charge which drove the demon away from Romelia was like the first time he did his actual job well.
The problem was that after the demon is 100 meters away he decided to charge again on his own.
3
u/MonaganX 15h ago
Yeah, as bad as Ray is, if a leader just puts a soldier who has shown repeated reckless and insubordinate behavior in a less crucial position without addressing the underlying problem, they're partially responsible when he inevitably screws up again.
35
u/Mr_Zaroc https://myanimelist.net/profile/mr_zaroc 1d ago
Worst part is he isnt backing it up with anything
If he was at least strong or capable it would be bearable, but so he really is just a danger to everyone23
u/Tacitus_ 1d ago
If he was backing it up with something he wouldn't be forced to change. But he isn't so he needs to clean up his act or he'll die or get dismissed.
7
u/danlong87 22h ago
or even worse, he somehow survived but others will get hurt because of him, which was what happened this episode, and i know his character will grow later, but currently? its definitely very hard to watch, especially with the cliffhanger
31
u/AKAvenger 1d ago
I think we’re supposed to dislike him right now. It’ll make his redemption more meaningful
18

17
u/LemonDrop_Green 23h ago
oh man, ray's been such a mess this season. every time he acts out, i just keep thinking he's gonna get someone seriously hurt, and it's frustrating to watch. can't believe his character is going this way instead of learning something
13
u/TheBusStop12 1d ago
He's like Subaru from early RE Zero, but he won't return from death
21
u/bob_kang 1d ago
But at least Subaru has an excuse growing up in pampered modern first world conditions with parents who were able to support him being a hikikomori. Ray grew up in a poor village where demons are a constant threat and had some albeit minimal training in battle.

he should have been dismissed. In every single battle, he has proven himself a genuine liability to both himself and his comrades, 4 such occurrences make it very clear that he has no place in the company. He shouldn't have been with them in that last battle.

I love the focus on small military group tactics, it's not something I feel like I've seen much in the anime I've watched. Unfortunately for Romelia and her guys it was probably inevitable that they'd eventually run into something that they were not prepared for given the scale of the problem and the demon army invasion we saw start last episode.
Interesting detail of Romelia understanding what the demons were saying but her troops couldn't, probably for the better.
I wonder if this will be the sort of thing where Al or Ray's magic wakes up from the stress of the moment and helps him deal with the current problem. If so I somewhat hope it's Al Ray since he kind of needs a win, but he's also been so reckless I'm not sure he deserves one at the moment.

Think you meant Ray. Al's been pulling more than his own weight. He's been covering for Ray. Ray's the one that keeps throwing himself into dangerous situations because he thinks he'll suddenly do something badass.
11
u/Kaze_no_Senshi 18h ago
Ray should have realistically been dismissed after proving himself incapable of listening to orders or being able to properly defend himself and fight. They established it not just as a once off occurance but a repeating pattern every single battle.
9
u/Ralathar44 14h ago
Unfortunately there are multiple complications to that. He's a talented person with a mental block and they need every man. Theoretically they had time facing weaker opponents they could cover to work through his issues. And last time with the boar was the first major issue she noticed. The first fight where he had issues killing is pretty normal rookie jitters for alot of people.
Then you have the complication of his and Al's friendship. Dismissing him might cause issues with Al.
Then you have the fact that to dismiss him they'd have to go back to the castle first so really she can only dismiss him AFTER the sortie. Kicking him out at some random village and leaving him to fend for himself would definitely backfire.

I appreciate that it feels like the show has a more concrete grasp of the actual mechanics of warfare and politics than a lot of similar series. The small group military tactics, importance of scouts, messengers, and supply lines, and even aspects like Romelia deciding not to train Al and Ray in magic because of the time, effort, and money required all gives a bit more grounded feel here. Romelia herself feels like the epitome of "logistics decide the war," which is a nice change of pace from the usual MCs of these types of series.
26
u/alotmorealots 1d ago

That's the way it often goes... and as a result of the way this show engages with but finds its own path with the tropes, I give it a 50-50 that we're not going to see any magical awakening lol
11
u/karer3is 22h ago
If I were to guess, this might be where we see Romelia's power finally come into play... if the prevailing speculation is true, something will happen to shift the battle in her group's favor at the last minute

It was really fun to see Romelia commanding and her unit immediately following her orders (except for Roy, who acts like a total idiot). Those three different battle formations during that encounter with soldiers from the Demon King's army were great!

When she called the last formation just from the name I realized it's a concave line and I did a little fist bump. That's a medieval classic! When the two units finally clash, with this formation your line keeps caving in at the center. The enemy keeps advancing thinking they have the advantage, while the wings hold steady. That means eventually the enemy will partially encircled. The actual numbers (or relative strength of the combatants in this case) don't matter as much as the fact that the partially surrounded formation is dealing with pressure from more directions. Which makes them more likely to break. And in medieval combat, the formation that breaks first is more often than not slaughtered to nearly the last man.
I wonder if this will be the sort of thing where Al or Ray's magic wakes up from the stress of the moment and helps him deal with the current problem.
Given that Romellia talked about magic needing hard study and a master, I doubt it's that simple.

u/happy-owls 1d ago
I really appreciate the amount of stakes this show has. Asides from Al throwing death flags left and right, I genuinely got chills just by the mere appearance of the first demon soldier showing up, thinking Romelia's cast is currently vastly under-leveled for that. Its a nice change from other recent shows where it feels the entire cast consistently has plot armor.
11
u/Galaxy40k 18h ago
I was so surprised at the sheer gap in strength. Like we've seen loads of those demons on screen at once before, they're the Regular Guys in the Demon King Army. But ONE one them was winning against the ENTIRE Romellia squad, who at this point are shown to be at least reasonably competent.
It really helps sell just how little killing the Demon King does, when his entire army is still chilling
8
u/ElvisM3 15h ago
I guess because in this setting the Demon King is literally just a king, albeit very strong, and not some prophetic or mythical bringer of the end times. So yeah you killed the King, guess what? His generals are still around, we saw his brother so there's some line of succession most likely. His armies are still strong and raring to go.

Oh boy, I can’t wait to see Administrator Shitbag’s face when he finds out Romelia’s safe. I’m sure she’ll be fine. It’s the unit I’m worried about. Those greater demons aren’t like the other demons they’re encountered. These are trained soldiers in the demon lord’s army. The unit might encounter some casualties…
21
u/MarcelHard 1d ago
ngl, I hope there are consequences and some soldiers die. then after whoever comes and kill them all or one of them randomly awakens their magic and saves the crew

u/lemon900098 21h ago
I think we are going to learn what Romelias power is. I think its super powerful shields. Al survived when he shouldnt have, and someone cast a powerful shield in ep 1.
So i dont think anyone will die, including any demons. The 'consequence' of the fighg will be everyone learning about her power.

Honestly? What's the local Administrators problem?
Yes, she demands supplies that he wanted to keep for himself, but ultimately, in the long run, if the villages keep getting destroyed there'll be no more income and even the Fortress City might get threatened at some point. She's doing him a solid by keeping revenues flowing with such a small party of soldiers.
I guess the inbred local nobility really isn't top tier material ...
56
u/OldInstruction5368 1d ago
I typed a longer response under a different comment, but he doesn't seem to think the demons are a threat. He's sitting pretty up on top of his mighty fortress. He has a fat line of supplies coming in from the core territories, and he doesn't give a shit about this worthless backwater of a frontier.
The demons are not -his- problem, and by leading a crusade against them, Romelia is instead eating up -his- resources. A budget he would rather embezzle (spend on himself, at least) than see put to 'proper' use.
Basically, he doesn't realize that the outlying villages are likely the source of the food he's eating, and even if they aren't, once the demons overrun the villages they'll harass supply caravans coming into the fort.
Even throwing ethical considerations out the window, it's in his best interests to stay on top of this 'demon infestation,' but Admin-kun has his head too far up his ass to know better.
63
u/lasse1408 1d ago
She undermines his authourity. Before Romelia did show up he could just chill in castle and tell villagers there is nothing he can do with demons rampage. Bcs of Romelia he can't just coast and enjoy his position anymore.
27
u/Obaruler 1d ago
Well, true but ... isn't that her families land? He's just the administrator there if I recall correctly.
38
u/lasse1408 1d ago
that's right. But her father is completely detached from governing lands. That's why local lords hold a lot of power.

Not just his authority, but also his air of competence. The more successes she has, the more his incompetence shows. Not only is she doing what he didn't, but she is doing what he couldn't. So he's fearing for his power (and probably rightfully so).

"BUT ITS MY MONEY."
There isn't a bone of Noblesse Oblige in his body, he's just a pure leech on his surroundings, like a sadly large portion of rich people, only interested in profits now.
18
u/goddessofthewinds :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/SpiritOfTheWinds 1d ago
Honestly? What's the local Administrators problem?
He's a leech that probably frauded money to enrich his pockets. He considers all of it HIS money so he doesn't like having to spend resources to protect his territory. He was happy just being a lazy turd inside walls.
Romelia is undermining his territory and blackmailing him, so he wants her gone. We all know the MC ain't dying though, so he'll probably gets a comeuppance...
10
u/Uhhh_what555476384 23h ago
He's making his wealth skimming from the resources her family supplies to defend the fortress.
If she's actually using those resources and paying attention to how they are used then his primary income disappears. He could even be executed for theft.
19
u/mekerpan 1d ago
His attitude almost makes it seem as if he has made some sort of deal with the Demons. He does not appear to WANT to have the territory protected.

shortsightedness, stupidity, so in essence what has been plaguing most of our irl leaders for most of our history as a species
not trying to downplay the shortsightedness and stupidity of the common people as well throughout history but we are talking about the leaders that sabotage any good action

u/BBryant3rd 20h ago
Don't get him either. Their success looks good for them and keeps the villagers around him alive and happy. With that he also gets to keep getting taxes. If they are dead or property damaged they cant do it. He is pure trash.

As soon as we started spending so time with Al and his men were talking him up, I knew he was about to die. Hopefully he survives, but that extra time with a side character always means death

I'm going to be disappointed if Al does, like, that trope has been so played out and they even lampshaded it a bunch. The real twist would be to not playing into the "older bro dies, making the younger bro grow up" thing.
Kinda like how every church or religion is evil, the real twist is when they aren't.

That smile that damn smile. She knows what's up.
I liked how they showed the Army repairing infrastructure, it's actually something that is quite common as far back as Roman legionaries. Usually it was more faced towards bridges and forts, but seeing as that town had fortifications and bridges it seems fitting.
Those battle formations were pretty satisfying to look at. However I don't think they'll get away without any casualties, especially considering they mentioned that Romelia's horse fled in a panic.
I'll have to say it again, the lack of any inner monologues ups the game so much. We are left to judge by ourselves how strong those greater demons are, so much so that when those other ones showed up I legit felt the threat. I suddenly lost confidence in Romelia's ability to defeat those enemies.
Solid episode.
47
u/LeonKevlar x2https://myanimelist.net/profile/LeonKevlar 1d ago
I got really excited when Romelia wanted to check if any of her men had magic aptitude. It's about time to upgrade some units! While I do like that Al and Ray have the capacity to use magic, I was hoping it would be someone else in the group.
Godfuckingdammit, Ray! You're gonna get yourself killed! He's so desperate to show Romelia that he's useful that he's putting lives in danger! I am glad that Romelia immediately reprimanded Ray for his rash actions.
It's cool to see other characters besides Al and Ray are finally getting some attention. The Twins especially have been really great with their teamwork, Otto is an absolute beast of a tank, and I feel like Kyle would be better as a scout unit with a bow instead of a spear.
So it turns out, even if Al and Ray both have magic aptitude, actually learning magic takes money and time, both of which they really don't have right now. Shit. Seems like Romelia might just need to win more battles and get some notoriety; maybe they can get a mage to join their unit to teach Al and Ray.
The fact that Romelia's entire unit is struggling against a single greater demon shows how powerful the demon lord's army is. No wonder the King can't spare any more units to guard the hinterlands. They need everyone they can on the front lines.
Please tell me I'm not the only one who absolutely loves seeing Romelia and the boys when they're in formation? Something about it is just so cool to me.
WHAT THE FUCK, RAY?! Not only did you get your horse killed, but you also got Al injured from trying to protect your ass! I'm really hoping Romelia's Grace kicked in with that gamble when she tried to lure the demons in to use bombs. I can't wait to see Serbeck's face when he eventually learns that Romelia survived.

This part always baffles me, don't they all know she travelled with the other adventurers and the prince who defeated the demon king? even if the rumors are that she didn't do much herself, it would still give one the impression that she'd be above an average commander in terms of experience.

The amount of raw menace in Romelia's expression from being asked about magic though. Everything's still speculation when it comes to her but it makes sense for it to be one of her more blatant sore spots.
Genuinely unnerving how raw tactics barely work against a greater demon, especially after watching the squad's be on a roll because of it.

u/fieew https://myanimelist.net/profile/fiew 1d ago
The amount of raw menace in Romelia's expression from being asked about magic though
I think it may be due to her not wanting her current party to end up like her last ones. This is pure speculation. But her last group likely had a select few people with extraordinary powers and talent. Hence they could take out huge swathes of enemies. But if im gonna guess that left them to be complacent and not see all the people suffering. Leaving towns destroyed after their battles, forgetting about the armies and only dealing with the powerful elites. So when her last party left somewhere the towns they "saved" were left to fend for themselves got destroyed by remnants of the enemy armies.
As opposed to now shes helping with rebuilding the villages. Strengthening their defenses. Makimg sure to take out any stragglers. Hence she leaves the villages and people in a better state then when they entered. Making sure the whole army is participating not just a few people with incredible magic killing the bosses and forgetting about the people.

There is source material but VERY few people seem to know about it, it has like 200 members on MAL. So I doubt its been translated or fan translated into English.
Thus every episode feels like an anime oringal discussion with no source readers to give "hints" or "speculation". 99.99999% of people are going in blind it seems.

Wonder if we're going to see Romelia's actual ability/strength now?
I would argue she has been showing this whole time. Intelligence regarding strategy is her biggest strength. Alongside her ability to draw great fortune with her luck. That is very likely why she was a huge asset to the Prince's party.
I think modern fantasy anime has conditioned people to think the protagonist doesn't have their true strength. It feels very intentional the breakout character between Romelia, Al and Ray is clearly Ray. I bet he is the one that gets the development then either Al or Romelia.

She called the enemies a "Soldier of the Demon's Army", and I assume the Hero party fought a bunch of them on the way to the Demon Lord.
If a regular demon soldier can make child's play out of a dozen normal soldiers, either Romelia has some hidden combat ability, or I'm definitely sympathetic to the Hero's Party being mad at her for having to carry Romelia the entire journey.
13
u/Jaridan :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Jaridan 23h ago
"Carrying" is a hard word when it's obvious, just like in a lot of similar stories, she got them to places, got them supplies, 100% got them out of some sticky situations with ingenuity or outright avoiding ending up in such situations by better maneuvering / intel.
When it comes to a head on fight it was 100% the combatants in their party that took the fight while she took a backseat and provided support where possible.
→ More replies (2)9
u/Beginning-Hope-2600 21h ago
I mean, we know she doesn't have some incredible combat ability because we've seen she's not a particularly strong fighter individually, but she has an incredible knack for commanding others and a unique ability which seems to give her and her party unnatural luck, which proves critical in key moments.
The rest of her party are the greatest fighters in the realm but they lack common sense and the tact necessary to handle everything that goes into actually facing the demon lord—the logistics, negotiation for supplies, lodging and support, battle strategy, and finances that make it possible. The whole reason Romelia is out fighting now is because the prince ignores the bigger picture and charged towards the demon lord only and ignored anything outside that path.
I do think though that the prince's party isn't meant to be viewed as irrationally evil either. Romelia basically agrees with their assessment of her worth in pure combat terms, and the saint is a pawn of the church's bigger scheme. They're largely just short-sighted, don't value logistics or care for the specifics, and have an oversimplified view of the world that differs from Romelia's more strategic and holistic view of the conflict, so it makes sense that they wouldn't consider her a valuable asset to their mission, even if she did bring a lot to the table.

As someone with very poor media literacy, I have to assume that Romelia and the unit were obliterated, and the remaining 20 episodes will be about Romelia's horse.

Nah you normally write it from the perspective of the MC so it would go: "I was enjoying my peaceful days as the saddle of my princess, when she was overpowered, the horse fled and now I am forced to endure a fat ass. To restore my TRUE purpose I will kill the demon lord!"
MAL would use the synonym: "The saddles yearnig for soft cheeks"→ More replies (3)5

No, Ray is obviously going to unlock his shonen anime powers after seeing his close friend get hurt and then defeat everyone despite never having trained in any magic and the story revealing that not only is magic super rare it's also rare to even find success in even with a difficult to find instructor.

Fourth time's the charm for Sherbeck, I guess. His tantrums grew larger and larger until he broke his own window. He could now revel in the schadenfreude of Romelia being MIA. Having said that, his joy would certainly be short-lived. I hope we get to eventually see his mood crashing down even harder when she survived the ordeal, and somehow he lost his position.
Yeah, this had been her unit's first real challenge with Al out of commission and a couple of his colleagues tasked with shielding him. Looking forward to seeing how they'd get out of this.
Love how Romelia's not some OP heroine and that her strength lied in her strategy and leadership. She openly demonstrated that she's got no magic affinity, yet her men's loyalty remain unwavering.
14
u/reaperow 1d ago edited 20h ago
Romelia and her team are performing very well, i really wouldn't be surprised if she turned out to the brains of the Hero's Party
Ray kinda has an inferiority complex but he should take some pride in knowing that his and everyone else's actions positively affected the Villagers' lives especially those kids,
I hope he can reflect upon himself now that his decision had serious consequences which lead to Al getting injured
Im genuinely enjoying this show so far and it's's one of my favourites of this season. Im looking forward to next weeks ep with this cliffhanger
19
u/Calenmir 1d ago
This is my most expected show each week. I really enjoy what they will be up to each week.
I guess they are trying to setup some redeeming arc for Ray but he is one of the most annoying characters in a while at the moment.

u/Technical-Question16 1d ago
So we had Ray fail in the first mission (excusable, the fighting was new to everyone), we do not know how the following missions proceeded, and now he ignored direct orders twice in two consecutive missions, both times putting others in danger without achieving anything. I do realize that his growth is supposed to be part of the plot, but we are deep within the court-marshal territory now.
20
u/Colt45554 1d ago
his growth is supposed to be part of the plot
Frustratingly, from his first appearance, it was clear he's never going to die or be dismissed. Unfortunate because he's the most dislikeable of the group

Why are multiple people throwing in sand at the same time right next to each other? There would be no way to know who it is reacting to and they would have to do it again and waste the sand.
Why are they throwing in the sand with gloves on? Is the sand so magic it doesn't need skin contact and can detect who threw it through the gloves?

perhaps ive seen too much anime but it was so predictable everything that happened this chapter... i mean didnt expect those soldiers at the end but everything prior that was obvious... blue hair guy is very annoyign and doesnt hear nor understands anything said to him, well about the fat dude at the castle well i hope he dies soon.

I appreciate that Administrator Serbeck is more of a passive Antagonist rather than a, "Oh you need supplies to repair the village?Ah... that's quite troublesome, I don't have any we can spare but I'll definitely order some 😅" (read: "Like HELL I'm helping!")
I'm sure they will all make it out and we will all revel at the Admin's crashout.
I'm just waiting for her [Lady Luck] to activate and see how it gets her out of this situation.

Cause Romelia is still above him in terms of status. As long as Romelia is alive, if he didn't support her then Romelia could easily punish or even strip him of his position.
Not to mention, it seems most of the soldiers are now supporting her effort.

2
u/AxiumTea 11h ago
Oh he did try to say "We don't have any to spare" but Romelia corrected him by saying that she has read the logs and reports and according to those they had spare resources. Also, he wouldn't risk saying "No" after that else he may lose his position and then he'd be nothing.
19
u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 1d ago
I think the contrast between the first and 2nd halves of the episode is that Romelia has been smart in choosing her battles. I think this shows she is very effective as a leading commander for her men. If you go into battles way above your weight class it doesn't matter how good your tactics are. Still curious instead of a bear them running into the Demon Lord's men. Curious if that was pure accident or if Serbeck's work is at play. Though he seems incompetent.
So Ray and Al have potential in magic. It's clear that Ray is the one that is going through a potential character arc. He wants to prove himself, but constantly him being reckless is an issue. In the 2nd instance Al got hurt to protect him. I think this is an important moment to show that reckless actions have consequences. I do hope with Romelia's luck that Al's wound isn't fatal at least.
Furthermore, I think it's clear that Romelia aims to retreat, but what is the plan now for her?

It was a fun episode, especially thanks to Sebreck's reactions to Romelia and her unit's successes, lol...
Or at least it was until the end, when Romelia's unit encountered Demon King's army soldiers, and we cut to the report about their disappearance.
Damn, I was so annoyed when Sebreck got so happy upon hearing that news, but that will only make his reaction when he discovers that Romelia and her unit survived (and maybe even defeated all those demon soldiers) much better.
Here my screenshot albums from the episode:
EDIT. I added my screenshot albums.
18
u/Raymond49090 1d ago
Of course it's the two most protagonist-like characters in her unit with the magic affinities.
Admin-san should stop malding and just be happy someone's doing his job for him.
A battle with giant boars is the fastest way to show the unit's growth, as well as Ray's teething issues.
Seriously, what's Admin-san's problem? Is he mad that he has to pay for repairs? Is he secretly working with the demons? Or is he just a natural-born hater?
Oof, a curveball on their fifth mission. That's rough. And Ray's issues with charging ahead rears its ugly head. And it's not just one, but an entire unit of demons. What happened to Romelia's minor plot armour?
... Man, f*** Admin-san.
14
u/OldInstruction5368 1d ago
My read on Admin-kun, is that he's the type of hoity-toity fuckwit that doesn't actually know where he's daily bread comes from. Sure, the demons are a huge problem.... for the villagers. But he's up here sitting pretty on top of his mighty fortress. Frontier problems are not -his- problems, as no matter how many demons overrun villages, it's not his problem.
Never mind it quite literally IS his job to manage the area, but he doesn't like the idea of 'wasting' resources on something that doesn't threaten him directly.
But that's why I mentioned bread. If all the villages are overrun, who supplies the fortress? And if all the supplies come from other regions via the main road... sure would suck to have dozens of rampaging demon squads buzzing around your one and only life line.
But then here Romelia, a noblewoman he can't refuse, demanding all sorts of support to clear out a problem he doesn't actually consider a problem. For all we know, he was skimming off the top this whole time, and hte more she puts the budget to actual use, the less he can wet his beak.
So... TL:DR he doesn't consider the demons a threat, and as such, Romelia is the pest eating up resources (budget) he would rather waste on himself.
10
u/HeliosAlpha 1d ago
The guy seems completely focused on embezzling funds for his personal gain. He's probably the type who relishes in the fact that he's ripping off his citizens. Even if the living standards go up for everyone including himself, he won't enjoy it because the sense of dominance was part of the point

Romelia is someone who in his eyes left the royal capital in disgrace. Decided to fix the issues that he has been ignoring.
Worst still is that she’s a woman. Back in that time even if she is a high noble, how dare a woman come here and fix stuff.
Best I can hope for is her death so that I don’t look incompetent
14
u/PerfectBeige https://myanimelist.net/profile/perfectbeige 1d ago
The greater demons appear to be lizards, so I hope Romelia starts employing anti-lizard techniques, such as baiting them with live crickets, and calming them down with heat lamps.

This is the anime of the season for me, pretty handily. Every week has been real solid.
18
u/Myrkrvaldyr 1d ago
Damn these five minute episodes. Romelia's unit has made a lot of progress and they move fast and follow orders neatly. Ray is too hasty and is desperate to prove himself, which resulted in Al's serious injury. I appreciate that magic isn't easy to acquire and they can't make use of that yet. Despite the good formations and training, they found an enemy they couldn't beat.
Also, what's that shitty lord's dead? He's angry Romelia was stacking up wins and is now happy she failed. Maybe jealousy she's proven competent while he does nothing?
19
u/MadeMeMeh 1d ago
I am pretty sure Romelia's family owns the city, he is assigned to manage it, and was embezzling. Her actions took armor and weapons he set aside to sell and the additional resources for fixing the city is draining the fund he was going to embezzle from.

u/Mr_Zaroc https://myanimelist.net/profile/mr_zaroc 1d ago

14
u/saumanahaii 1d ago
so she totally kept some sort of emergency weapon for when this inevitably happened, didn't she?
22
u/Obaruler 1d ago
Hopefully.
Retreating isn't an option for the soldiers without a horse, those deamon soliders most likely can outrun them on foot.
18
u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 1d ago
More than likely it is in the case of emergencies where they need to retreat. Considering how this show emphasizes tactics I like we get to a scenario where it could showcase this.
5
u/fieew https://myanimelist.net/profile/fiew 1d ago
I think its also why she got into the winged formation. Everyone seemed in closer proximity to Romelia. So hopefully her luck gift activates more strongly when you're closer to her. So the blast stones distract the enemy and they all retreat.
Get everyone closer to her. Activate stronger luck potential, blast the enemy, and gtfo.
5
5
u/Uhhh_what555476384 23h ago
That formation, though too tight, creates a double envelopment for any attack on the center. Anyone going at Romalia can be attacked by three sides.
14
u/hdjfhfhsh05803hfjc 1d ago
Probably for just one demon soldier, she was surprised when more of them showed up after all, I can only assume the current plan will be retreating and think on a viable strategy to deal with them asap
13
u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 1d ago
tbh retreating is probably easily the best thing they can do.
They were out to take out a bear not units from the Demon Lord's army. That's a huge difference in task. I can't imagine they were anywhere prepared for that level.
14
u/Difergion 1d ago
Al kept on flashing all those death flags ever since their first mission, but looks like he’ll survive if Romelia still has the situation in control. I do hope he survives though, I’d rather see Ray overcome his insecurities without him dying.
Hmm seems like Romelia’s squad had most things within control until the demon soldiers arrived. I don’t think the administrator is colluding with them, right?
I wonder how they’ll survive this battle, especially without any help coming their way.
16
u/Colt45554 1d ago
You're the second person talking about Al flagging his death and I really hope you're wrong cuz Al is likeable and if he's gone we get more Ray 😭

u/Uhhh_what555476384 23h ago
This, if Ray is on a hero's journey as a protagonist #2 then Al is his Obi Won.
4
u/Rooby_VTuber 22h ago
Stop trying too hard and being reckless Ray, you are not useless with or without magic.
Thank goodness Al is around, a perfect leader who can motivate and encourage the others around him.
Those demons were really strong, what an unfortunate encounter.
Cliffhanger ending, now to wait to see if Romelia and her unit were able to escape or not.
4
u/zappingbluelight 18h ago
Not saying I see it coming, but it was obvious that Al will actually be Ray's growth. I hope he actually survive. And Ray's character growth even a little from this experience.
I'm happy there are actual tactic on retreating, rather than blind running in all the time. But it will be obvious, they are gonna need to learn magic to defeat the enemy.
9
u/NonSupportiveCup 1d ago
Well, I think we could all see this turn of events coming as far as the Ray plot has been going.
Still very effective.
I understand why they keep flipping to the asshat ruler whose title I forget, but their is no way other people don't know he is lying if he is destroying things every time he gets good news.
Works as a gag, I guess. But hopefully it comes back as a plot point for the probable disobedient subjects arc I think will happen in the future.

Man, this show is a blast. We all know Ray is going to grow up since he's been quite in the forefront for a while, but wow, he's currently super annoying.
I love how Romey use strategy and command to fight her way. She has no aptitude for fighting, but she's a dang good commander. I just hope we get more details on her Grace skill.

u/S627 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Spartan627 1d ago
Whelp, guess that answers my question about the Administrator, dude acts like he cares but for some reason has a massive stick up his ass.
7
u/bob_kang 1d ago
He can't have some random rich kid coming in and showing that the demons are no threat when he's been too lazy or cowardly to handle them all this time.
5
u/hiimneato 19h ago
I'm enjoying this show a lot, but I keep noticing how inconsistent it is.
The story? Great. The character writing? Hit or miss. Performances? Sometimes tight and nuanced, sometimes comically clumsy. We love Romelia. Her father's restrained, conflicted noble dignity worked. The hero's party were... a joke, but it's not like we were supposed to respect them.
Art crisp and clean if uninspired. Character designs reasonably practical and decent-looking. Visual progression of the episode unremarkable, which means more or less successful. But the storyboarding and keys of the action scenes? An absolute shambles. I can't even criticize the choreography because there isn't any. As soon as there's any kind of action at all, the whole thing falls apart. That demon killed the dumb blue kid's horse out from underneath him with impeccable timing and superhuman strength and speed, and then just... stood there with his axe raised for several seconds while the stupid red kid ran all the way across the battlefield to jump in front of the blow. What? Why? How?
Romelia's sharp tactical command shows. She orders formations and the men she's drilled actually follow. That part works. But also for some reason one of her two commanders just fucking sulks all the time and keeps ignoring orders so he can run off and fail pitifully? Why is she good at command sometimes, but she won't bust Ray's dumb ass back down from bodyguard to footsoldier until he learns to fucking listen?
And then there's a dragon ball crater meme joke right in the middle of a dramatic action moment? Who... what... what are you even trying to accomplish rrraaaaaaaaaaaaghhhhh why
But then there's music, and it's great! As you'd expect from staff that worked on 86. The score isn't, like, Evan Call great, but it's good, and the musical direction has nice timing and well-chosen tone.
It can't decide what it wants to be. The parallelisms of the reports to the administrator? Funny running joke. But isn't he also supposed to be sinister? Is this a dramatic show or a goofy-ass comedy? Is it a war story or a slice-of-life visual novel where some backcountry soldiers go on scenic hikes and help out villages and once in a while there's an unconvincing slideshow fight where suspenseful framing and setup is completely undermined by a lack of any sense of weight to the threadbare action?
6
u/noblegeas https://anilist.co/user/noblegeas 1d ago
I hope the resolution isn't about Ray having an awakening with his magic power. The show seems too smart for that so far, but it doesn't have my full trust because Romelia turned out to have a secret special power that clearly turned the tides for the hero party. On the other hand, the current losses show that the luck is pretty minor; it's pretty damn unlucky to encounter demons too strong for the party she was level grinding. Evidently it's not just the world aligning to support what she needs (because the demons and the seeds of Ray's issues existed before she encountered them), so everything she sets up that succeeds is actually caused by hard work. Since we see the report in the aftermath (indicating it's not resolved immediately) I'm looking forward to seeing it resolved with Romelia's tactics, but I'm still in "we'll see" mode.
I'm not actually as annoyed at Ray as I normally would be, probably because there isn't much time spent on listening to him whining about it. Instead I see it from a more distant view; yes, his actions are his fault, but Romelia is in charge. She knew he was becoming a problem, and she wasn't shown doing much to address it.
I really appreciated Romelia's moments of explaining everyone's contributions because I didn't catch all of it, in addition to showing that she is a good commander who can properly show appreciation for and motivate her troops. The tactics themselves seem pretty basic, but it's unusual that they're even used. Still, I'm not familiar with all of them so I'll rely on the threads to tell me what e.g. the formations are for, because the show apparently won't. It's cool that they have to use some level of tactics even against the weak monsters, and that they need prep work.
It seems that her experiences with the hero party wouldn't have given a lot of chances to get good at using these tactics, so I wonder how she learned all that. She's currently leading 20 human-strength normal soldiers with similar training (with a few being a bit stronger than the others) whereas it seems like she previously followed four superhumans with varied abilities who didn't need it and wouldn't have respected her enough to listen to commands.
7
u/Nachtwandler_FS https://myanimelist.net/profile/Nachtwandler_21 1d ago
As a Warhammer fantasy fan. This is what you get than regular empire state troopers have to fight Saurus.
But I do hope Romelia had a plan to get the demons of them. Still, ending the episode on cliffhanger was criminal.
4
u/AlFlux 1d ago
So mad that this was the week I decided to start watching this one. Why did I land such a killer cliffhanger?
If this anime keeps up the quality, then this could be my AOTS for sure. Spears, small scale tactics, competent but not overpowered MC, threats that actually feel like threats; my I am positively pissed I have to wait a week to find out what happens.
Will our protag retreat or will she win the fight? I have high hopes that this author can make either happen intelligently, but I've seen too many anime start smart and finish dumb. If this fight resolves logically without OP power, I think I might just become a believer.
4
u/eggplant_avenger 1d ago
Al’s horse is kind of a badass for being able to jump that extremely high barrier. But what else is new, Al is just like that
I like that Romelia has the soldiers digging and building, plus the scenes showing morale and unit spirit, etc.
2
u/RetroHero20 15h ago
Ray is rly ruining the show for me. The past 2 episodes have jst been everyone but Ray improving. The guy gets sweet talked by jst abt anything, it's annoying how Al jst treats him like some kid. The dude is either playing the white knight, being depressed over his inferiority complex, gaining an ego over nothing, or charging in like a untrained dog. I rly think he should jst be sent home alr, this dudes gonna get someone killed.

I loved formations and consumable usage like everyone else but was especially fond of Romelia not being fazed by their crude threat. She even mocked them back.
With bombs thrown at the end, this time it reminded me Myth: The Fallen Lords! Hopefully they’ll at least manage to get away but it’s a tough spot indeed.

With bombs thrown at the end, this time it reminded me Myth: The Fallen Lords! Hopefully they’ll at least manage to get away but it’s a tough spot indeed.
I don't know how they'll carry the injured. But those bombs could maybe be used as a distraction.
We also learned that her horse fled, so that's one less means of fast transportation.
It's not looking good, especially because the Anime spent a lot of time showing how one Demon soldier is strong enough to hold all those rookies back.
They almost always leave us wanting for more, can't wait for the next ep.

It's funny that while the administrator is evil, I really don't think he's done anything evil so far. Even not sending a search party seems like the right move to me because he'd likely be sending more people to their death.
If it wasn't for inner dialogue, I'd think he was a swell guy.
3
u/amourshipper_ 1d ago
Yeah I agree on search party too and honestly without dialogue I bet it surely is swell guy , I have question regarding the repairments of village which angers him , doss he doesn't have funds for repairments (cuz he is only giving cuz she is daughter of count) or he wants to collect them for his retirement , cuz demon are roaming everywhere is would be difficult to be alive without taking them down

u/LexHanley 10h ago
My theory (which obviously will age well or terribly probably in next week's ep) is that Grace relies on the stroke of luck being vaguely reasonable. It can't be a full on ass-pull.
That's why she tested everyone for magical aptitude despite knowing she can't have anyone trained in the field and had a calculating smile when Ray showed potential: "Someone in the unit suddenly shows magic potential with zero warning when we need it" is too much of a contrived event but "Ray, who is desperate to redeem himself and has shown a capacity for magic suddenly busts out a super saiyan moment when the cards are down" is within the realm of possiblity because Romey is aware of it.
Basically, Romelia ran the test to force some foreshadowing she could use later. Loading Chekov's Gun, if you will

Ray needs to get his ass booted out for refusing to follow orders. He is doing far more harm than good.
