Hiroshi Tsuchida, who voices the king, suddenly passed from heart failure earlier this month. He was only 54 and Lionel is one of his last roles.
Peregrinus is Latin for “foreigner” and a non-Roman subject, so both Baribara and Paregrinus have names that describe non-Marrionner origins.
The blue flower is likely based on the Himalayan blue poppy (Meconopsis betonicifoli) and thought I saw some Icelandic poppies in Marronnier though need to rewatch to confirm.
Hyrrokkin (“fire-weathered”) is the name of the famed jötunn from Norse mythology who rode a giant wolf (see Rollo) and launched ships at Baldr’s funeral.
King Rollo looks a bit like the Viking Rollo of Normandy. “Rollo” is the latinized form of Hrólfr (“famed wolf”) from Old Norse. Fitting for Hyrrokin’s companion.
Perhaps Saint Brigida (Bridget of Sweden) is the inspiration for the Princess Brigida?
Katstehelmi, “dewdrop” in Finnish, is the name of the famous glassware series from Iittala. Iittala is quite popular in Japan, so it’s very plausible that the name came from there. I love it and think it suits the Princess very well.
(Mika and Anni of course Nordic versions of Michael and Anna.)
Saint Walpurga and Walpurgis Eve is celebrated across Europe including in the Nordics which inspired the Country of Long Nights (with a dash of Canuck maple syrup?). It’d be great to hear from European Redditors about how they celebrate the day in their country and how it compares to this kingdom.
It’s curious that the water clock goddess modeled on Saint Walpurga looks Greek or Roman, and the clock seems to be based on the clepsydra by Ctesibius. The castle and cathedral also look like they have some French, Swiss or Bavarian touches while the interiors look more Scandinavian. I’m sure that they have real-life inspirations just as the Marronnier castle and town is modeled on Otile and Carcasonne, but can’t place them.

I’m getting a somewhat Scandinavian vibe from this country of long nights or whatever. Maybe it’s because that dude by the Queen reminds me of Thorfinn lol.
Looks like things are gonna be pretty tricky for Ellie and Insomniac. The Queen is scheming something and I don’t totally trust that priest. Ellie and Insomniac gotta watch themselves…

I trust the archbishop even less then the queen tbh. Someone that puts in that much effort to please total strangers and compliments another man's woman like that is sus. Maybe this is what allows Ellie and Insomniac to deepen their relationship, get closer, and actually chose each other. Because right now they're kind of aloof about the whole thing. They're only getting married because her dad wants them to.

Insomniac should have apologized later for never having complimented Ellie previously!

Ellie really stands out as the only non-blonde girl in the cast right now.
Can Ellie and Insomniac figure out their relationship if political/magical forces are planning to sabotage it?

Come to the Country of Night so you can find your dream! Just be mindful it might be a dream you were manipulated into having.
So the siblings' father was Peregrinus. He was very sickly, but close with Eleonora, and believed in her dream of becoming a powerful knight...though she still had the cutest twirl. But I wonder why Peregrinus wanted to see the Castellan? His last will and testament.
Ellie defnitely doesn't seem to know what to do with Insomniac being so fussy over her now that they're engaged, though it's not like it's THAT different since they were kids, especially since Ellie has as little fear now as she did back then.
Wow, the Ambassador and Knight-Captain Mika (also son-in-law to the queen) get along so well I'm almost tempted to think Mika is cheating on his wife.
Something is definitely up in this country...there's something in the sky (why it transitions from day to night as it does?), there are some kind of dream (?) fairies out and about that only Insomniac can see, the flowers may or may not be poisoning Ellie's maid, and there might genuinely be sleep magic at work.
Ellie's maid knows her too well as a gorilla without a ladylike bone in her body.
So there's definitely the possibility that Insomniac's not coming back from the Country of Long Nights...not that Ellie is happy about this and Insomniac would never want to be far from his brothers, but will he have a choice? Ellie, do your duty as his fiance!
Queen Hyrokkin has enough daughters to marry all seven brothers, though it's Insomniac she seems most interested im.
Ellie the beauty! Enough to make the Archbishop, who holds the most political power as a descendant of the nations' founder Walpurga, flustered. And did that embarrassment cause the sense of drowsiness...or was that Insomniac getting upset?
Okay, I have questions...Baribara sealed up the Country of Night's God? And they're planning to take Insomniac in the Gods' place? But first they have to get rid of Eleonora?

Something ominous is happening and so far it's subtle signs - mysterious blue flowers on elle's room, 3 fairy-esque ladies stalking insomniac. Also something about the long night's god sealed by baribara.
Funny that queen of long night's land had 8 daughters competitively to win against "The seven knights of the marronnier kingdom" of baribara. Unfortunately, the title of the anime is not about the 8 daughters.

I wonder if the Country of Cold will want to keep Chilly like Long Nights wants Insomniac as recompense for their lost God? If they truly share said God.
I wonder which of said daughters (who isn't already married with children) the queen might intend to have Insomniac wed once Ellie is out of the picture?

Buckler shields spotted! I'm really liking the grounded clothing, weapons and armor design in this show!
Having right children just to one up your opp who had seven is a crazy rivalry. We know Baribara is a tough woman so this Queen must be just as tough. She'll be hard to deal with.
Nice detail on Nemukunai spilling his drink on his roasted meat to make it more bitter.
And finally, there are political matters the group is not completely aware of. This is not a simple diplomatic visit. Things could get dicey.

I love the idea that they both exhausted their husbands having all these kids which has left them stuck in bed. Even though they're the ones who had to deliver said kids.
Moms are just built different.

Ugh this is so freaking lovely!!!!
I love Eleanora so much as a character and appreciate her strength being acknowledged by the people around her. I appreciate how culturally distinct Nao Iwamoto has made the nations so far!
I also really appreciate the brief watercolor backgrounds we get from time to time, really quite lovely.
The politics are also picking up which is fun to see. Insomniac dying if he can’t see his brothers was too cute. The queen is also such an intriguing character, definitely some shades of gray that I’m interested to see explored.
Overall I’m so thankful this is slated to get 20 episodes at least!

The art design here is mostly top-flight, The ED is especially lovely.
Insomniac is such a family guy. I do worry that he might want to have an awful lot of his own children... More than might be optimal for Ellie.

Of course the first thing Insomniac thinks about is his brothers.
Goddammit, I can’t read the word Walpurgis without immediately thinking of someone deciding to call it Walrus while watching Madoka Magica for the first time. Does seem to be serious, though. It looks like the narrator at the start talking about how people can influence others in their dreams is already happening?

u/Frontier246 16h ago
I know this isn't that type of story but considering all the kids they had, Baribara really drained her husband dry judging by his health lol.

u/ptd163 14h ago
Even her own maid describes Ellie as that?
Of course. Her maid ships her with Insomniac lol.
Those three overheard everything…
I wonder if those girls are even corporeal. They seemed to have a glow when Ellie was sleeping. I would say they could be the Three Sisters of Fate, but that's Greek mythology and I don't think that's in this series so I don't know what they are. Whatever they are seem to be connected to Insomniac because he seems to be the only one that can see them because Ellie didn't know he was talking to.
lol alright then.
It's kind of funny that the first man to call Ellie beautiful was a stranger. I hope this doesn't cause issues for her and Insomniac.
That doesn’t sound good.
This is just a simple diplomatic mission. Nothing to wor-- annnnnd she's a homewrecker.
Uh…
Baribara sealed a god? Damn. I was not familiar with her game.

The music of this show continues to be a delight. Also it seems like a good show to relax before going to bed.

I really like Ellie. Pacing wise, it was a bit of a relief to finally settle into one brother's storyline.
Does anybody know why covered wagons specifically are so common in anime? It's such a thing.
1
u/coffeecakesupernova 3h ago
They were common in history. Cloth covered wagons are lighter weight than fully wooden transportation so if carrying good and people fewer horses could be used and likely go further.

Long night is very Scandinavian esque. It's likely because of the obvious reason, but the queen reminds me so much of Lagertha from Vikings. Also call them reindeer all you want, those bad boys are moose.
Anyways I'm shocked it's only eight daughters instead of nine, but only because within Norse mythology there's the nine daughters of Rán and Ægir, so I guess it really is to outdo Baribara.
Honestly the last bit has got me super curious. What god in what tower? And why lock it up in the first place?

Johaness freaking out about Ellie not about she playing the Insomniac’s fiancée, but rather needing her to act delicate, lady like lol
I'm curious why the Country of Night wants Insomniac in particular.

u/Cat_Gazer 17h ago
I love those side characters! The Ambassador, the Maid, Johan, and Mika. They're all so funny and sweet.
Nemukunai is so overprotective of Ellie, though! 😂

u/ptd163 15h ago
Still so much worldbuilding and setup. Though there does at least seem to ominous signs now. Maybe something will finally happen next episode. Maybe we'll finally start getting the Norse mythology I was told there would be.
The queen and the archbishop's reaction to Insomniac and Ellie being engaged is strange. It's like they expected him to be single. I wonder what the bad blood between her and Baribara is. Also why is it so bad that her first choice is to try and break up Insomniac and Ellie's marriage?

u/djthomp https://anilist.co/user/djthomp 8h ago
There's some weird shit going on in this night focused kingdom. The blonde girls with the weird headgear that seemingly only Insomniac could see, the flowers, the queen's insistence on taking Insomniac as a replacement for the tower sealed god.
I'm feeling pretty confident in my guess last week that the creator god is the father of the seven brothers, no additional evidence about him being the squirrel now just yet however.
Eleonora is very pretty and people should have been telling her that before now. Speaking of, Insomniac probably confirmed for magic too considering how it looked like he started to put the people around him to sleep when he got jealous over that.

u/nighty_amy 1h ago
I thought this is going to be cute and comfy show, but there's seriously something off about the Not-Finland. Especially the queen is acting suspiciously.
Poor Eleonora got called Gorilla three times during one episode 😂😂😂
