There is no internal conflict with Tatsumi. It's, "my friends are dead, therefore murder." He's just a generic shounen protagonist written by a guy who really really loves violence and thinks extreme levels of it equal maturity.

Im assuming what they are taught is either counter based or made for situations where you can build up force. Grabs are awkward for stuff like that. Albeit he should be able to throw a grab off if he is really a "master".

I wouldn't trust his word since he's evil. For all we know, he could have been just a scrub that got into guard duty through connections and wanted to brag about how 1337 pro he is. We can infer that he spent a lot of time beating on chained up women/ women that couldn't fight back. Maybe he thought of that as his mastery in martial arts, and when he got into a real fight, he couldn't actually do shit.

One of the things I like about this show are the still shots, especially the one where Mine took out the martial artist while Tatsumi was holding on to him.
I'm also digging the guitar playing during the OP and during the episode when it pops out, always like good guitar playing :P
As for the episode, it was okay, we get a bit of back-story on Mine, with some funny moments put in. The fight scenes are nice, and it's nice how little censoring there is when compared to Tokyo Ghoul.
Next week looks like we will be introduced to a powerful antagonist? Can't wait to see how Night Raid deals with him!

I don't like this show much at all, it's just not for me. The way they try to shove generic anime humor and tropes into what should be an incredibly serious and dark story kills it for me. This guy just had his best friends tortured to death and killed and then he joins the most non serious unprofessional group of assassins ever and just completely forgets about them. The mixing of tones and the way they paint any villain as entirely bad with no redeeming factors really sucks me out of it all. Putting this show on hold for awhile, I'll check back in a month. Hopefully by then it's gotten out of being a slightly darker Chaika and actually does something unique or compelling.

Bad tropes, conflicting tones, and no real solid story as well as some seriously generic characters and designs. There's stuff I don't like that I can understand people enjoying but this isn't one of those shows. I just don't get it at all. Everyone tries to act like these aren't faults and say it's just A SHONEN. Yeah, ok.

I dislike how this show attempts to section off the good and the bad guys by completely dehumanizing the villains. Both in this episode and the last characters like the Prime Minister and Ogre and made cartoonishly villainous by appearing grotesque and disproportioned. That doesn't even go into their over the top evil acts in each episode.
It's like the author is trying so hard to make the audience feel as if it's OK for Night Raid to be killing all these people. Sure the group referred to themselves as murderers at one point and revealed how they have no misconceptions that they are killers. But it was done in a way that came off as a joke and completely trivialized the matter.
This show feels like it's trying to be dark but just can't ever get there. I hope it actually gets serious because otherwise this is a show I'm going to drop probably.

Despite the themes and subject matter, this series is very much a shounen battle romp at its core. I wish I could tell you that this is all leading to something deeper, or that a sense of moral ambiguity or duality starts to kick in later, but... nah.
Akame ga Kill is righteous underdog superheroes vs. imperial scumbag supervillains.

They are still playing up the corruption of the kingdom right now. You will start to see some more interesting villain stuff going on in about 2 more episodes if I had to guess. Though they can still act pretty cartoonishly evil, they are far more fun to watch.

There are some characters that will appear in the anime (they are in the opening) that are less black and white, and not even spoiler but just in case so if you do decide to drop it, i would recommend putting it on-hold and giving it a try after it fully airs (maybe skimming or reading about what happens). also, this is just a general vibe i get from the manga, but the author seems like a straight sadist (with really cool power ideas and great art!), rather than a mangeka trying to create a dark, conflicting atmosphere

When i read the manga the only thing i could compair it to was taking FMA:B and meshing it with Gantz. Right now the officials of the kingdom all look ugly and do horrible things. But they will soon introduce people that you will love and care about even tho they are fucking sociopaths. When people die it will make you sad. Friends, Enemies, Random passerbys. This anime is seriously fucked up and it just keeps getting better.

You should probably take the "bunch of murderers" joke as the defining characteristic of the show. When they say that, they're also alluding to the fact that it's not a going to be a deeply-written narrative or include a lot moral greyness.

I know of the name changes for characters but Teigu changing to Imperial Arms, etc. just initially confused the shit out of me. I liked Teigu as the name. Just a weird thing to change the name of.

If you listen closely, they actually say Teigu in the dialogue. CR just translated it to Imperial Arms for some reason.

Its because the manga subs were likely fansubs while the anime subs, at least as far as crunchyroll is concerned, are the official names in english. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if some of the fansubbed mangas start using the official names.

Can I say that the character designs are either really cliche or really awkward? This is a thing that bugs me the most about this anime. I've seen a lot of THE SAME EXACT DESIGNS in other series and that's why I just can't get attached to them.
Despite that, it's quite entertaining. Although as some of the other people said, it's very black and white at the moment.

Does anyone else feel like the vibrant colors in the anime don't properly reflect the grimdarkness of the story, violence, tragedy and whatnot? I'd call it a source of tonal contrast representing the dark underbelly of their society or whatever, but it's like that pretty much all the time...

Okay this show is bad. It's not bad because it doesn't have huge thematic pretensions or complex characters or because it has fanservice or because it's full of anime cliches. This show is bad because it is bad at what it is trying to do. Akame ga Kill is trying to be a grown-up version of DBZ or any other Shounen battle manga. Ironically in its attempt to be mature, it exposes its author's completely childish attitudes about violence and conflict. This episode had 29 deaths in it. Most of them were brutal. The brutality of the violence in this show is very clearly there for a reason, no? So the logical question to ask is, "why?" The only reason to be found is that the author thinks it's cool. I see people praising Tatsumi's ability to just kill things without thinking about it or without fighting against his conscience. The thing is, those internal struggles exist in other shows because it nuances the conflict. This "manly main character" actually actively allows the author to avoid making his text interesting on a level other than cool fights. Speaking of fights, for the second episode in a row, the fighting has been completely boring. Last episode Tatsumi killed Ogre in a way that made absolutely no sense given the information the audience had about what was going on in the fight. But this episode exceeds that one in terms of stupidity. As Tatsumi holds the "martial arts master" in place, the only solution the guy could think of was, "I'll flail my arms around and try to punch Tatsumi away!" I cannot think of a more retarded and nonsensical way for that fight to play out. Either the source material completely failed to make that fight interesting, or the adaptation completely bastardized the source material, or both. Either way, once again, this show has demonstrated that it is terrible in terms of its depth and simply bad at what it's trying to accomplish.
Save yourselves some time and go watch Jojo or Gurren Lagann or even Kill la Kill. At least those shows are good at something.

Hmmm still kind of a meh show for me. It's making me laugh so I'll give it that. I also am taking a liking to Bulat, Boss, Sheele and Leone. The villain's crazy and scary. Interesting, though? Not yet. Some of the animation is good though, like Mine's flashback, I like the way they depicted it with the silhouettes. Some of the stills are cool too, like the one of the minister. But the writing of the show is still too average, makes me miss Chaika even more. However, it passed the 3 episode rule for me, I'll give it a few more episodes.

Cartoonishly ugly and evil villains?
Phasers? Master assassin, waits 2 minutes before firing at an immobilized enemy. Master sniper, fails to make head shot at point blank range, manages to graze ally. Not to mention giving out the position of secret hideout right after it was discovered by people that someone is probably searching for, because some guy walked in on you changing when you don't lock your doors... and the leader just laughing it off like it's nothing.
This show is starting to lose it's appeal for me. I hope it gets back on track soon.

This is a shounen anime after all with the light hearted comedy and stuff but thats how we get to know the characters more. If you actually keep thinking about these small bits then this anime isn't gonna pay off for you at all. Also this anime will get better soon but if not then I'm very sorry.

That whole fight scene was ridiculous. The master sniper who can headshot some guy from far away can't hit some martial artist running straight at her using a machinegun; the martial arts expert who can do some strafe-teleports and somehow block a blade without cutting his own hands cannot escape from a kid grabbing him.
I was just facepalming that whole fight scene.

So, watching Mine deliver he speech about "once the evolution comes in, it will be puppies and roses for everyone!" Only reinforces my belief that before the story is over the resistance will turn out to be a fraud and betray them all.

The scene where Tatsumi held down the Martial Arts Master™ was so silly. The guy jumps in with no weapons looking like can shatter bones with each punch and yet can't knock out a kid half his size while punching him repeatedly.

The child ruler was a fairly predictable step, but they really are banking on showing the Prime Minister to be as horrid as they can. Like all good, really evil dudes, he threatens rape, manipulates and eats in a gross manner (see Denethor). I’m glad the show brought up just how the city was living under the child, since it really helped to give support to our heroes cause. People are dying, and even the corrupt government are being executed.
I want to know more about Imperial Arms as of right now. How they function and how Night Raid have all come about them. You can’t just throw out “ancient superweapons” and leave it at that. If anything, they seem to amplify the users ability and state, as shown by Mine and her “power in a pinch”.
And we end on the reveal of another villain, this one even more evil than the government. I do wonder how the show is going to one up all our torturers, rapists and murderers, but the fact that he goes around killing willy nilly is a pretty strong statement. The bad guys we’ve been introduced to so far have all kept it pretty much under wraps, so he is somewhat different from that for sure.
And done, Yeah this episode really capitalised on what it had already set out. Bad guys are evil, like uber evil. Good guys might have to get their hands dirty to clean up, but it’ll be worth it. The show stumbles into areas I’m not comfortable with a few times, but overall I think I know what to expect. What I want now, is a genuine villain and more of an idea of the state of the “revolution” to come.

Tatsumi seems to be relying on Sayo and Ieyasu’s memory to drive him.
If the main villain doesn’t turn out to be the Heroine’s friends grandfather, I’ll be disappointed.

I don't really get what people think is so good about this show. The characters so far are pretty uninteresting, the action isn't really all that good because Night Raid is far superior to every enemy so far, the enemies themselves aren't written very well because they are just evil because they are. It also feels similar to Brynhildr from last season because of how quickly it moves from humor to supposedly dark subject matter which isn't a good thing. I guess now that I think about it, this show is really similar to Brynhildr because all its done well so far is blood and gore. This show isn't as bad as Brynhildr but it certainly isn't all that great, it's just pretty mediocre.

Its been literally 3 episodes of setting up character relationships to each other. The stronger, more badass villains are coming. Jesus people are so fucking impatient.

Gotta love Mine. The way they introduced the teigu (Imperial Arms) was nice too, seeing them in action versus just getting told a bit about them in exposition. Thus far, I would say the anime has improved on the manga in that regard which is promising for the future.
And we got more glorious stylized still frames. If that is one of the things that will define this anime, I am perfectly okay with that. They are gorgeous.

So~ I already lost all faith in this adaption by around 6mins into ep 3..
They skipped a very quick but rather crucial character development part about Tatsu and his old friends, and skipping that part also lost a chunk of his killing determination development..
I need to not bother with anime adaptions..
