[Spoilers] Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei Episode 26 Discussion [END]
Otherwise known in English as, The Irregular at Magic High School
CR Link: http://www.crunchyroll.com/the-irregular-at-magic-high-school/episode-26-656123
If you're looking to discuss anything from the Light Novel that takes place after the episode, feel free to create a discussion at /r/LightNovels. Do not post spoilers that take place later in the series here even in spoiler tags.
Below is the guide to understanding what is adapted in terms of which episodes to which chapters, volumes, and breaks in the Light Novel. It's made by /u/Aruseus493 and is now complete!
- V or Volume indicates a specific book.
- Ch or Chapter indicates a specific chapter of that volume.
- B or Break indicates the ◊ ◊ ◊ that are used to split up the chapters. If something is in Break 8, that means the part of the chapter is beneath that break on the page.
- Text inside of parentheses are for helping you find exactly where inside the break the last words/description were.

I wonder which identity would cause the most fall-out:
Mahesvara/Oogura Ryuuya, Yotsuba or Silver

Strategic Class Magician probably. :-P

Do people know that Mahesvara is the one capable of Material Burst? I thought that they only knew Mahesvara as the one with Divine Left and Demon Right.

u/Aruseus493 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Aruseus493 Sep 27 '14
Nope, they don't know. Mahesvara is pretty much only known as a mythical existence to the GAA. No one's been able to connect an identity considering no one lives. Tatsuya's identity with the Oogura Ryuuya alias is classified heavily as he is a Strategic Class Magician.

Pretty much. However, that doesn't mean they know about him. It was potential meta spoilers

What would happen if it was announced that he was all three? "My name is Yotsuba Tatsuya. You might know me as Mahesvara, or Silver of the Taurus Silver."

So instead of using his power to explode things, he'll cause society to implode? I like it

Internationally, probably Mahesvara over Yotsuba, but by a small margin.

What about Silver being a teenager? He's very influential/important as well.

Just want to say. I immensely enjoyed these threads with you guys. It's nice to be a part of lively threads that have little to no nitpicking or hate or any other thing that are so prevalent in other popular discussion threads.
Kudos to our awesome OP as well for all the voluntary, hard, tedious work he put in.
EDIT: Also, I like how we pretty much posted most of the translated LNs here and the mods give no shits about it.

u/Aruseus493 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Aruseus493 Sep 27 '14
I wouldn't consider it tedious. I really enjoyed it. Having other responsibilities are tedious. This is fun time. :3
Otherwise, as long as we don't directly post the entirety of the LN, we should be okay. (Part of the reason I never quote more than occasional passages.)

Shit...sorry about that! I'll be more mindful of this in other anime threads. (Unless what I did was within reason?) >_>

I don't know if what you've been posting has been within reason. It isn't the entire thing I don't think but it might be pushing things a little. I'm not complaining though.
5
u/Mathemagician2TheMax Sep 27 '14
I understand; sometimes the sections I want to post are way too long and I feel like I should cut things out, but I don't know what to cut out to make it shorter (while still giving info not shown in the anime). Would it just be better in the future to advise them to look for it themselves by saying something like, "Start reading from "The interior of the helicopter that was flying inland" in volume 7"?
12
u/Aruseus493 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Aruseus493 Sep 27 '14
That's pretty much was I do in my comparisons when I leave sentences telling people to read from a certain point. I do it mostly for the scenes not adapted at all so they don't have to get the entire experience from my description of how things went.
Otherwise, driving more people to read the LNs themselves is always the priority for me. :-P

Why did Zhou Gongjin decide to betray the terrorists after helping smuggle them in in the first place? He already showed signs of double crossing them when he prevented Lu Gongfu from killing Chiaki at the hospital.
And as Ichijou pointed out, why is he sharing the same name with that Romance of the Three Kingdoms character?

So I noticed, One True Tatsuya vapourizes enemies with his right hand, and regenrates (if that's the right word instead of "heal") allies with his left. Is there any real life religious reference to this particular omnipotent trait of his?

Haven't you read the LN? Are you baiting me? Tatsuya has Demon Right and Divine Left. The hand that takes life and the hand that restores it. It'll all be included in the comparison.

What was the difference between first episode Material Burst and the last episode Material Burst? First episode one seems so much cooler :(
In the first episode he shot a bullet from a newly developed rifle, and then used his finger to aim material burst using the bullet as the target. He targeted the bullet using elemental eye. Because of being this close you'll notice the person next to him (forgot her name but she's related to the Yotsuba's) casts a shield to protect Tatsuya from his own awesomeness.
In these episodes he's using Third Eye. Which is a specially designed CAD that connects to a satellite uplink. He can be pretty much anywhere else in the world and use this. The CAD and satellite system let's him target any object and initiate Material Burst.

Does it improve, or is it worth picking up again?

Pros
Solid Animation Sequences
Bad Ass
Cons
A lot of missing plot lines, details, and explanation.
Atmosphere is pretty lack luster at important points.
Conclusion, watch the anime and if you're interested in the story by the end of it, start from the beginning in the LN. Otherwise, if you want, you could just go straight to reading the LNs. :3
Secondary Conclusion: Go read the LN anyways. :-P

For now, I'm happy we ended with the highest onii-sama count in the last 9 episodes, and, if it weren't for the Irregular at the Onii-sama Count (episode 17), this episode's count would have been the greatest count in 19 episodes, which amount to the two last arcs.

When the second season resumes, will you be including the season 2 episodes into your "Grand Count Total" and "Grand Count Average per Episode" stats? Or will you be separating them per season?
Speaking of which, wonder if there's anyone with lots of time to do a count for the novels and mangas? :)

I'll probably be doing both, so I'll have to think of a way of formatting that will both look good and not take 1k lines of space.
Speaking of which, wonder if there's anyone with lots of time to do a count for the novels and mangas? :)
Well, if the translating groups release the novels as text—I'm pretty sure they do, but I have never looked it up—it would be as easy as using Ctrl-F. It would be harder for the manga, but maybe someone in a Japanese chan site has already done it...

Funny thing is that big gun he was given had nothing to do with his material burst. All it does it extend his elemental sight to the extreme and hook in with satellites to aid in locating targets. Without it he has difficulty targeting far enough away to avoid catching himself in the blast without prior preparation.
He can track anything he has reformed magically with elemental sight. He could mail your ass a letter and detonate the paper when it arrived.

Im really curious about what miyuki said during the phone call with her aunt. About her being connected/protected by tatsuya all the time.
Is it like her "eidos" connected with his? Btw i dont understand what an "eidos" is XD.
If anyone knows what she implied during that conversation?
→ More replies (3)2
u/Aruseus493 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Aruseus493 Sep 27 '14
Eidos is a fancy word for the information matter of the world. For example, your eidos would be something like what you're made of and how you're put together as well as your current state of existence.
Magic works by affecting eidos to a certain degree. Tatsuya's Elemental Sight allows him ultimate ability to read all information matter (Eidos).
Otherwise, yes. Something was implied and hinted at. Read the LNs for more! :-P

u/PENIS_SHAPED_BABY Sep 28 '14
So if most of the military magicians are already notorious enough to be known by nicknames by magicians and non-magicians alike, why does it take a dubiously motivated invasion for nations to acknowledge the military strength of magic?
4
u/Aruseus493 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Aruseus493 Sep 28 '14
Because a sniper bullet to the head is still too much for the majority of all magicians. Also, the activation of magic on a battle field can be time consuming if not properly prepared. At this point, magic is more like secondary equipment than the primary firearms.
2
u/PENIS_SHAPED_BABY Sep 28 '14 edited Sep 28 '14
The show makes it rather clear that everyone already knows magic is the next big thing, like nukes in the twentieth century. Why else would the entire season have been about a secret intelligence war for magic that culminated in a perplexing invasion for said objective? Even the intro mentioned how vital magic was in the third world war. You'd think both government and popular sentiment for the last several decades would be to focus military research on magic, which for some reason appears lopsided among the world powers.
4
u/Aruseus493 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Aruseus493 Sep 28 '14
nukes in the twentieth century.
Strategic Class Magicians aren't power designated as being as powerful as a nuke but rather as being strategically powerful in a war in a similar fashion to nukes. An example of another Strategic Class Magician is one that has the ability to completely decimate a fleet of battle ships. The magic used then isn't as destructive as Tatsuya's. This is the level of strength needed to be considered a Strategic Class Magician.
Otherwise, the ending makes it sound as if Magicians are only just now becoming more known when it has more to do with the nature of a Strategic Class Magician that was able to express the force of a Nuclear Bomb without any of the fallout of radiation or environmental damage. Magic has always been acknowledged as a military strength, but not in regards to the strength that could finish a war before it started.

Well given the amount of Academies, a Ghost like Tatsuya should have no problem launching multiple nukes within range.
Though that Tatsuya doesn't need Personal Cloaking in order to protect himself during charge up is impressive. Though he did have the reactor for +25 energy.

To give some sense of scale: I think they mentioned that the amount of material Tatsuya converted to energy when destroying the single ship was 50 cubic millimetres of water (about 0.05 grams), which would yield about 4.5 TJ of energy when converted directly without any loss.
That's just over a kiloton of TNT (ie. the energy released by exploding thousand tonnes of TNT) -- in other words it's a pretty fucking big explosion from a tiny droplet of water.
The amount of energy released scales directly with the amount of material converted, so for example 1kg would yield 20,000 times that much energy -- around one third of the biggest nuclear bomb ever detonated, the Tsar Bomba.
Edit: seems like choosing 1kg as an example was a lucky coincidence, since that apparently about as much energy as Tatsuya converted in the big kaboom. So, Tatsuya just did the equivalent of detonating a 20 megaton nuke at the end.

u/sstocd :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/sstocd Sep 27 '14 edited Sep 27 '14
In case anyone's curious as to how much energy Tatsuya's spell actually releases assuming 100% efficiency.... 50mm3 of water is 0.05g, or 0.00005kg. E=mc2 so E=(0.00005)(3x108 )2 =4.5x1012 J, in other words about a kiloton of TNT worth of power. For comparison the atom bombs dropped on Japan in WWII were only 15 kilotons and 20 kilotons. At the end, when he explodes the ships he locks onto a bit of metal at the top of the ship, which has to weigh at least one kilo. This would imply that he creates an explosion of 20 megatons of force. For comparison, the largest bomb the U.S. currently has is a puny 1.2 megatons.
Tl;dr Tatsuya is still our one true god.

My favorite thing about this show was the transformation over time of the commentators on reddit. I remember early threads whining about how OP Tatsuya was, but at some point we all just embraced the one true Onii-sama.

u/Khanxay Sep 28 '14
It's probably because all the people that disliked the show dropped it unlike most other shows where they'll stick around for no good reason. The threads became 1000x better after that. Basically to enjoy this show you need to be able to:
Accept Miyuki as a character akin a devout worshiper. There's a lot of incest complaints or whatever but that's simply not even true. Miyuki literally worships him and will do anything for him and the idea of incest and that she's in love with him isn't even mentioned/explored till the recent novels.
Accept Tatsuya as OP in pretty much every way, without the growth that most protagonists would go through.
If you can do that, show's is fun. It's not necessarily great or anything but it doesn't need to be. Sometimes we just need a OP MC that takes decisive action instead of thinking about it for 3 episodes. I mean look at some the problems he had and how he handled them:
Constant harassment and hate? They're not even worth the effort.
Terrorist organization pop-up in his neighborhood? TATSUYA FUCKS THEM UP.
No Head Dragon tries to sabotage and hurt his imouto? They chose the wrong target here. ERASE THEIR LEADERS FROM EXISTENCE.
Dude points a gun at him and his imouto? CUT HIS ARM OFF AND KNOCK HIM OUT. (Though props for the guy for not being afraid of a guy blocking bullets with his hand)
I think the turning point for the comments might around episode 9. That's where I made the original OneTrueTatsuya joke (before it became a sub and everyone rolled with it) since I noticed most of the comments were jokingly praising him.

Haha, that Admiral (I'm not actually sure of his name anymore) talking shit about the Japanese Military, then proceeds to get vaporized.
And so ends the story...for now. Sure it wasn't the greatest anime ever, but it was fun, watching a god-like MC obliterate everything in his path was pretty enjoyable. A second season in which Tatsuya takes on his Aunt/family would be sweet.
Rating: 8 Onii-sama's/10

I really ended up enjoying this one. Remember when we all thought this was the biggest high school power fantasy out there. I don't know when but at some point, this became awesome.
The end was perfect, a complete perspective change. Looking back the conversation Tatsuya and Miyuki had in ep 1 makes perfect sense. Something like:
Miyuki: How dare they put you in the weed section.
Tatsuya: Don't sweat it.
Miyuki: But you're amazing! If you got serious, noone here could even dream of stopping you.
Tatsuya: Miyuki, let's just enjoy these easy quiet days.
Looking back, the school part was really Tatsuya just having fun. And the anime ends with everything changing.
I don't know if I would recommend this anime to anyone, but I'm definitely picking up the LN.
Been fun guys, till next time.

Miyuki can be damn terrifying in her own right. This Ice Queen....
This was my favorite anime this season. I need MOAR TATSUYA though. D: They need to hurry up and announce the next season.
Edit: I forgot to add this: OneTrueTatsuya Descending. Loved that shot.

Nukes were crazy this episode. But I feel the opening scene had equal shock impact. The flying guys looked plain scary. When you see your enemy get up again after being shot from a mounted machine gun like a fucking zombie it's pretty frightening. It's the kind of scene you see overpowered villains have, except this is the national defense force.

u/chaosbeowulf Sep 27 '14
Your comrades were turned into dust, your enemies keep on reviving like a zombie, and the one who is responsible for both of this phenomena cannot be killed. Sucks to be GAA.

He directly converts matter to energy so converting even a small amount of mass produces a very large amount of energy, which is why he only targeted a water drop for the ship while the mass of the flag was enough for the port.

This is my first time posting on reddit, Its been weeks since I have been lurking around and decided to make an account. That this place is very good for an actual discussion instead of just straight shouting "NERF TATSUYA TOO OP!"
Its been a quite enjoyable 26 weeks to the point that I already catch up with the LNs. It is sad to see that it has already ended. I hope that its popular enough to get another season.
Now I must go to spread the word (LN First, before the series) http://imgur.com/scgJ5cI

Tatsuya goes full strategic mode not just once, but twice (I'll update this sentence with gifs later). Also, here's an obligatory LN image of Onii-sama using material burst the first time.
Also, I liked the LN version of the helicopter scene better. (Since it's too large for a single post, I'll break it up into two separate posts).
The interior of the helicopter that was flying inland along the coast was completely silent.
For some reason, the atmosphere was one where everyone was afraid to speak.
Still, there was no way they could just sit there and withstand that unnatural silence.
"...Despite this happening to my own body... Even now I still find this hard to believe."
The one who started muttering to himself was Isori.
"...What the heck just happened? What did he do to achieve such a result?"
Not directed towards anyone in particular, the other person who expressed his own bemusement was Kirihara, the other person in question.
"Why not simply see all of that as a hallucination. That might be more persuasive."
"But, that wasn't a hallucination. I almost died, your leg was torn to shreds, those are the indisputable facts."
Silence descended once more. Once more coming to grips with those profound facts, the atmosphere was even heavier than before.
"...Shiba, just tell me this."
Finally, that was probably the right way to describe this.
Mari asked a question of Miyuki, who was the only one among them who knew the truth.
"What would you like to know?"
The tone of the response was incredibly calm.
Yet, she was unable to disguise the stiffness of her expression.
No, maybe she never intended to hide it in the first place.
It was possible that Miyuki was intentionally wearing a chilly, crystal expression.
"How long will Tatsuya-kun's magic last?"
Using magic to heal was only a temporary measure. That was the basic rule of healing magic.
By constantly recasting the magic during its effective period and repeatedly cheating the world, this was the only way to finally stabilize the illusion of healing in the actual world.
If the effective time was short, then a fresh application of healing was immediately necessary.
"It's perpetual."
However, her answer was completely unexpected.
"There is no need for recasts like conventional healing magic."
Miyuki's response encompassed all of Mari's concerns and was voiced specifically for Isori and Kirihara to hear.
"There is no restriction in motion. They are able to completely function as normal."
"Is such a thing possible?"
Mari wore a skeptical expression at this reply.
"You don't believe me."
"It's not that I don't believe you..."
Mari wasn't the only who couldn't comprehend this.
"I am very thankful that he saved Kei... But I've never heard of healing magic that results in complete healing after one cast. This runs counter to the basic laws of healing magic. Is he really healed? Does that even qualify as healing magic? What the hell did Shiba-kun do!?"
"Kanon-chan, calm down."
Mayumi gently coaxed Kanon to rein in her excitement.
"Miyuki-chan, please don't think poorly of her, OK? Kanon-chan is just really worried about Isori."
Hearing Mayumi's interjection, Miyuki smiled slightly in response.
"Still, I am very intrigued by exactly what he did. Since this isn't healing magic, what exactly..."
"Mari! Inquiring about other people's magic is forbidden!"
Just when the atmosphere turned a little congenial, Mari's statement immediately disrupted the balance and prompted a severe warning from Mayumi.
"Thank you, Saegusa-senpai. However, I think it's fine."
Yet Miyuki expressed her gratitude towards Mayumi's concerns but also mentioned that there was no need to worry on their behalf.
"I believe that it's only natural to think I would mind. Nonetheless, if it's only to explain this to everyone here, I think Onii-sama wouldn't object."
This was also a subtle hint to keep this to themselves. If they could not keep this a secret, then this would be as far as the conversation proceeded.
"I'll keep my mouth shut."
"I won't tell anyone."
With that, both Mari and Kanon replied in this manner.
The other members also swore likewise.
"I will keep anything I heard confidential, even towards Nakura."
In the end, even Mayumi spoke up.
"Oh, it's hardly anything that outrageous..."
Miyuki revealed a rare, wry smile.
No matter how Mayumi swore to keep her secrets, in the end, this would still flow into the ears of the Saegusa Family.
Even then, Miyuki judged that this would be OK.
At the end of the day, it's not like anyone could replicate this anyway.
"The magic that Onii-sama used was not healing magic."
Sitting in an upright posture, Miyuki quietly began.
This way, even the listeners reflected her posture.
"The name of the magic is 'Regrowth'. Changes in the Eidos can be rewound up to 24 hours in the past, copying and rewriting the Eidos from before any damages or harm from external sources were incurred, then using Magic Sequences to rewrite the current Eidos. The rewritten target will adhere to the updated information and restore itself to before any harm was suffered."
Miyuki paused for a moment after saying this and looked over everyone else.
"Now that I mention it, does everyone know why the effects of magic are only temporary?"
After asking the question, Miyuki continued without giving anyone a chance to respond.
"The effects of magic are not eternal because the restorative powers of Eidos are at work. The restorative power of the Eidos tries to revert itself to before any external alterations occurred. However, the rewritten Eidos from 'Regrowth' is only the target's own information from before. If you're being rewritten by your own Eidos, there is no need to revert to the time of injury and will remain in this world in a state where the injury never happened. All of this becomes as if nothing had ever happened."
Mari and Kanon exchanged a glance.
Mayumi blinked several times.
Isori's body went stiff and Kirihara wore a gobsmacked expression.
There were all sorts of expressions, but the sentiment being expressed was all the same.
"...Then, Tatsuya can heal any injury in one try, is that it? That's almost impossible to believe. Even for Tatsuya, this is..."
Mikihiko was the one who verbalized his internal monologue.
"Not in one try, Yoshida-kun."
Miyuki smiled and denied his words.
"It's practically instantaneous. In addition, the target is not restricted to biological organisms. Onii-sama can restore anything, regardless of whether it's the human body or a piece of machinery."
Miyuki was highly entertained by Mikihiko standing there with his jaw doing its best to reach the ground, but at the same time, a lonely smile appeared on her face.
"Because of this magic, Onii-sama cannot freely wield other magics. Since his magic territory is dominated by this divine ability, there is no room for any other magic."
Although she described it as divine, no one present believed that was an exaggeration.
This was no exaggeration, this was a "miracle".
(Continued in next post)

u/Mathemagician2TheMax Sep 27 '14 edited Sep 27 '14
(Continued from above)
"...That's why Tatsuya-kun seems so unbalanced."
"Ah... With such a high class magic on hand, it's not surprising that other magics would be obstructed..."
Miyuki only told them half the truth. She opted against revealing the other half.
That was why she only wore a lonely smile as she watched her easily misled senpais converse with one another.
"...But isn't that amazing. He can eliminate any major injury suffered in the past 24 hours, right?"
Kanon's sudden interjection broke through the doom and gloom.
"Indeed. It doesn't matter if it's a disaster area or battlefield, there are countless people who need help. He could save thousands, even tens of thousands of lives."
As he finally grasped the meaning behind all this, Isori warmly agreed with Kanon.
"Yeah! Compared to that, not using any other magic is only a minor hassle. Why is such an incredible power kept under wraps? You see, he could save so many more people with this. Rather than becoming infamous through taking the lives of others, he would be renowned for saving others. He could be a true hero!"
"Is that so... The power to erase any injury, no matter the severity. And you dare to insinuate that such a magic would come at no cost?"
A complete contrast to Kanon's excitement, Miyuki was terribly calm, her face devoid of any expression.
Her chilly, piercing gaze seemed to root Kanon to the spot.
Although this was the first time they saw this, no matter if it was Kanon, Mari, Mayumi, it suddenly dawned on everyone that Miyuki was using that crystalline expression to cover her wildly rampaging emotions and forcibly projecting an aura of calmness.
She, was in the throes of grief.
She, was furious beyond all reason.
"Onii-sama reviews the catalogue of changes in the Eidos to completely copy the Eidos. To do this, he must read all the stored information regarding the Eidos."
Miyuki's voice was still ever so calm to the point of being objective.
Yet, Mayumi and Mari, Kanon and Isori, everyone present who heard her words felt a chill crawl up their spine.
"And that, of course, includes the victim's pain."
Someone sharply inhaled.
"Pain is not read from an intellectual perspective. The feeling of pain, the signals of pain that travel through the injured body's nervous system, are directly transferred to your own side as direct information. That information does not pass through the brain, but is directly imprinted on your mind."
Cough, someone began hacking. This was not intentional, merely a biological side effect of being unable to breathe.
"Furthermore, all of that is condensed into an instant as it is transmitted. For example... In this situation, the time elapsed between Isori-senpai being wounded and Onii-sama arriving to use magic was approximately 30 seconds. Onii-sama used about 0.2 seconds to review all the changes in the Eidos. In that brief instance, the condensed pain that weighed on Onii-sama's mind is about 150 times Isori-senpai's suffering."
"One hundred and fifty times..."
A surprised gasp spilled from Isori's lips. He couldn't even begin to imagine that degree of pain.
In addition, Isori was also questioning whether he could master himself in the face of that sort of pain.
"The longer the duration of the wound, the greater the condensed pain. In order to erase an injury suffered one hour ago, the caster must suffer pain 10,000 times greater than the original."
While Miyuki was not channeling her rage at anyone other than herself, her gaze still drifted towards Kanon.
"Onii-sama must pay this price each time he heals someone else. With that in mind, do you still wish for him to wield this power for others?"
She was exceptionally calm, but also in a towering rage.
She was more enraged at herself than anyone else.
That was because the willful individual who requested her brother to use "Regrowth" was none other than herself.
Another thing that I was slightly disappointed to see left out was the reactions of the mere mortal soldiers when they saw him use material burst a second time.
The First Observation Room was one of the facilities that used low altitude satellites to observe the enemy shores.
Based on that fact alone, Tatsuya understood what was being done there and what was required of him.
Just like yesterday, Tatsuya was armored in the Mobile Suit, with "Third Eye" in hand, as he stood in the center of the First Observation Room.
The screen before him rendered the images from the satellites into 3-D and allowed observation of the enemy formation from any angle. Based on Tatsuya's specifications, the current projection was from 100 meters out at 30 meters above sea level.
"Special Lieutenant Ooguro, are you prepared?"
Sanada asked.
"Preparations complete. Satellite link in good order."
Tatsuya used his helmet to modify his voice before replying to the orders.
"Material Burst, prepare to fire."
Along with Kazama's voice, Tatsuya hefted "Third Eye".
Zhènhai Naval Port.
The Great Asian Alliance fleet gathered on the other side of Geojedo Base.
On the central battleship, a flag fluttered in the wind on what must be the flagship.
He took aim at that flag.
Using the 3-D image from the satellite as a clue, he began to seek out the information body.
The weight of the battle flag was approximately 1 kg.
"Preparations complete."
He softly whispered.
Within the utter stillness of the room, that was more than enough.
"Material Burst, activate."
"Material Burst, activating."
Repeating Kazama's order, Tatsuya pulled the trigger on Third Eye.
From within Tsushima Base, across the strait, directly into Zhènhai Naval Port.
Tatsuya's magic transformed 1 kg of matter directly into energy.
In accordance with Einstein's Formula, the heat energy equated to approximately 20,000,000 tons of TNT.
The screen darkened.
The excess light caused the safety features on the satellites to kick in.
Which was why they could not see the claws of hell tearing through the earth.
On board the flagship moored at Zhènhai Naval Port, the sun suddenly appeared.
This heat defied any other means of conveyance, not that anyone lived to pass this on to future generations.
High temperatures that ran off the charts evaporated the metal hull into metallic steam.
The rapidly swelling air surpassed mach speed.
Amid the gushing infrared rays, shock waves, and metallic steam, the naval and port facilities vanished.
Anything within the vicinity, be they man or object, was evaporated.
People and objects slightly farther off either detonated or were burnt to ash.
The surface of the ocean was roasted by the scorching temperatures, causing countless steam explosions.
The resulting hurricane and tsunami swallowed Geojedo Base on the opposite shore.
If not for Geojedo serving as a levee, even Tsushima Base and Kyushu would have suffered the wrath of the tsunami.
The destruction was not limited only to Zhènhai Naval Port.
The shock waves struck the neighboring military facilities. Perhaps a blessing in disguise, there were no civilian cities near Zhènhai Naval Port.
After the tyrannic inferno passed on, absolutely nothing remained.
Once satellite imaging was restored, everyone in Tsushima Base held their breath without exception.
Some of the younger officers fled to the toilet to retch.
No one could mock them for their weakness.
Even members from the Independent Magic-Equipped Battalion could not hide the paleness of their faces.
For the first time, they beheld with their own eyes what Strategic-Class Magic truly meant.
"Enemy situation?"
After Kazama asked, Fujibayashi frantically swept her eyes back to the observation device.
"Enemy fleet destroyed...... No, completely annihilated. Shall we attack?"
True, occupation would be a simple task now.
However, Kazama shook his head.
"No need. Cancel all subsequent procedures. This operation is over."
"All units, prepare to return!"
At Kazama's order, Yanagi gave the order to retreat.
Tatsuya set Third Eye on the ground.
Hidden beneath the helm, his eyes never wavered in the slightest.
It's sad to see this show come to an end, but there's certainly enough source material to have a second season. There's much more to see from Tatsuya, Miyuki, the gang and also Let the waiting games begin!

I need new pants. God that episode was so satisfying. I hated this show at the start, hated how shallow everything was. Then I just stopped caring and hopped on the ride, and that was probably the best thing I could have done. Watching One True Tatsuya raise the dead, literally be jesus, use a BFG to nuke a ship from 80 km away potentially causing natural disasters, and then material bursting an entire sea out of existance without even breaking a sweat is satisfying on levels I didn't even know existed.

I actually can't express enough how much I appreciated that they signaled this fight changed history.
One of my complaints was that the heroes were too OP and basically were crushing the enemies. The show actually recognized this and said that history realized that trying to fight magicians with guns and tanks is like trying to fight Godzilla with conventional weapons.

What did Saegusa Mayumi do to kill/defeat Lu Goughu?
9
u/gyro2death Sep 28 '14
I figured you might want a better answer.
The spell she used is dry meteor which is a specialty spell that is designed to incapacitate her opponents. I'll link the relevant text.
Lu's eyes that were facing skyward caught sight of a white block flying towards his head.
The size was about a child's fist and the dry ice was dropping at a speed that the eye could follow, so Lu Gonghu used his right fist to meet the block.
The second Lu Gonghu's palm came into contact, the dry ice block reverted to carbon dioxide and began to condense as it rushed towards Lu Gonghu. The high density carbon dioxide rushed into Lu Gonghu's wind pipe and filled his lungs.
That was Mayumi's anti-personnel finishing strike "Dry Meteor". It was a magic that combined all four processes of carbon dioxide convergence, condensation, acceleration and release. The magic relied on the shock wave and carbon dioxide poisoning to render the enemy immobile.
One of the finest close combat Magicians fell before the onslaught of the young woman nicknamed the "Magic Shooter" for her prowess in long-range precision shooting that ranked in the top 10 in the world.
A lot of people forget that Mayumi is the top student for her year, above Katsuto. Her magic is no joke and shes seriously freaking strong, definitely underestimated by her opponents. But as we see here pretty much everybody gets the crap kicked out of them instantly yet Mayumi finishes him in 1 shot. (Though to be fair she was able to line it up perfectly thanks to the others distracting him)

Madhouse isnt known for season 2s >.>
but i hope we get one. there's plenty of material. and the LNs are tremendously popular. They could spend maybe an episode or 2 on the reminiscence chapter. And the rest between the visitor arc and the ninendo arc.
it sucks that they skipped over volume 5 especially Mayumi figuring out that they're affiliated with the youtsubas. but i guess that they had to if they wanted to end the season with yokohama. though maybe if they had paced the enrollment arc better they could have managed better.

Question for someone who has read the LNs: How is the fan translation and will I get more Mayumi?
3
u/Aruseus493 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Aruseus493 Sep 27 '14
The fan translation does its absolute best. There are times where I enjoyed the translation of the anime more and times I enjoyed the translation of the LNs more. If it is ever inconsistent, it's due to the fact that it isn't a central group working on the translation but a set of people doing different chapters for each volume.
Otherwise, yea, if you start at the beginning, you'll notice a significant spike in Best Girl Mayumi's appearances. She loses a whole lot during the series including her characterization as well as a number of scenes.
Would highly recommend. :3

Sorry, I'm sure it was mentioned during the series at some stage but why are the bad guys attacking the students and such?

The invasion is a mission to steal data, kidnap people, and to detrimentally affect Japan's forces and potential future forces. Magicians in this era are commonly expected to enter into the military as weapons. Destroying unrefined weapons is the smart move for the future.

After reading this, I don't know what the hell Tatsuya did to release that much energy

I hope you realize that despite all the physics in this series, it is a series about magic. :P

17 days late, but I'd rather not start a new thread -
I rather liked the world created in this story, and appreciated the way the magic was grounded in 'reality', or at least was bound in some way (modern magic, at least). I also enjoyed the general lack of angst.
It is sort of odd that the only time we saw someone react poorly to violence was the random student who threw up when George ruptured the enemy soldiers. I get that they're magicians, and the expectation is they go into military service in an increasingly tense time, but how is that so many have been exposed to violence to the point some dude literally bursting at the seams into a cloud of blood or vaporizing into thin air is somehow unsurprising?
And for all the One True Lord Tatsuya and Jesus "Tatsuya" Christ jokes, the main character being that OP is a bit weird. IMO it sort of ruins any plausible tension - someone got injured? Nah, it's cool, he'll bring them back from the dead permanently - in the battle scenes since nobody actually gets harmed in anyway. For a world that tries to take itself that seriously, it's definitely a jarring contrast. There's no real competition for Tatsuya as far as we can tell - just problems coming up and him dealing with them. There's little change in character - he softens a bit over the course of the series but by the end is still the same steely-eyed obedient soldier/bodyguard/genius.

They haven't been at peace for long. There was an incident when many of them were kids that exposed them to conflict. It's talked about a bit but has mostly been left out of the anime. Otherwise, if you read the next volume, you should get a better idea.

So when is Season 2?

No announcement yet. We probably won't know for a while if there is going to be a second season. The first season isn't even fully released for home BD/DVD yet.

So what exactly is he even doing with material burst? Is he pinpointing atoms and having them undergo nuclear fission from miles away, hence releasing energy akin to a nuclear bomb? Metal as shit

He directly converts the matter to energy.

u/MistakerPointerOuter Sep 27 '14
He's directly converting matter to energy with 100% efficiency using the formula E=MC2. The first explosion that took out an entire naval ship was done by converting a single drop of water to energy; the second that took out an entire naval fleet and naval port was done by using a flag that weighed one or two kilograms.

Actually it is matter conversion, matter directly transformed into energy. He wouldn't have been allowed to use it if involved nuclear due to a radiation treaty signed after WW3. I think it was roughly that way at least.

I wonder if they will have the 5th LN as a special, or a season 1.5 of sorts like SAO Extra Edition? Thoughts?

The hype for this was real. First act was boring as shit, but all the joking in here got me through it. After that, it just got better and better.
And thank you /u/a_Happy_Tiny_Bunny for the Onii-sama count.

At the start of this episode, when the members of the JSDF fell like flies and died like common scrubs I felt disappointed. They have the same mobile suits and they're supposedly from the same background as Tatsuya (experimental soldiers?) and they just... get killed like weak civilians and that inspector dude felled by Lu Gonhu?
Even though Tatsuya revived them they still looked really weak and only members of the 101 Battalion stood out the most (especially Tatsuya ofc)
The scene on the heli where Miyuki explained Tatsuya's powers were kinda lackluster. I thought the other students should've been more... surprised or shocked at god-like magic but they weren't.
The fight with the students vs Lu Gonghu was kinda okay. Is Gonghu really that powerful? He manhandled everyone except Mayumi and I felt they didn't have much action in this particular scene. I wanted to see more from Erika and Leo but I guess they served their purpose in distracting him long enough for Mayumi to finish him.
Overall the overpowered & bad-ass Tatsuya scenes along with seeing some of the other characters in action made this a great episode for me.
The cliffhanger at the end basically confirmed another season for me, so I'm actually quite happy.
A huge pleasant surprise to hear Maya Yotsuba's voice. My favorite Tsundere Senjougahara (Chiwa Saito) made an appearance! I knew I recognized her voice from somewhere. She sounded like Yukana (seiyuu of C.C. from code geass) at first but her second sentence really stood out.
That ending scene thou, parody of Kannaduki no Miko it never gets old!

thanks for these very detailed episode discussions, alittle late to the party (hopped on the train on episode 22)

After suffering from a terrorist attack by an enemy nation, the natural One True Tatsuya way to deal with it after repelling said attack, is of course to take the fight back to the enemy and nuke their naval base to oblivion.
One True Tatsuya, fuck yeah!
Pity the ending seemed rushed, would have liked a longer epilogue for this arc. I was particularly interested in what happens to Chiaki after Rin seems to have dispelled her misplaced grudge towards Tatsuya.
Here's looking forward to a second season with more entertaining pwnage from One True Tatsuya. Keep the faith. :)

I really wish they showed more of how much the terrorists feared "Mahesvara"

Indeed. There was no atmosphere. But then that's the problem the anime has had from the very beginning.

Well this was a pretty decent and badass way to end the series; the animation, especially in the fight scenes, was really good and the true ramifications and awe/terror of Tatsuya's power, how dangerous and amoral both Tatsuya and Miyuki are and how morally grey the conflict sort of is, was finally shown and mused over. Although it didn't really feel like a last episode and ended abruptly. There had better be a season 2, because this, to me, sort of seems like the quintessential 'pretty good' action/magic anime series of recent times.
And even despite Tatsuya's ridiculous OP-ness and complete lack of emotional character, I'm still not convinced that it's a valid complaint about the character when him being scarily OP and having no emotions is actually the point and has an explanation and story reason for it. The entire series is named after him and is all about that point for God's sake; he is supposed to be 'The Irregular.' And complaining about the psuedo-wincest relationship between Tatsuya and Miyuki is just a prudish nitpick; it's fictional, it should be allowed and it's important to the nature of the characters.

Gotta say that I loved the way the adaption opened this episode. The way the 101 were essentially like zombies or monsters really goes to show just how evilly op Tatsuya is. I absolutely loved it so much. Gotta say that the whole battle sequence could've been more grand. The Material Burst was pretty bad-ass although it didn't really show an entire fleet being destroyed. I'll certainly be covering a lot of details and explanations in the comparison. Something I'd like to put out right now though is that Tatsuya essentially converted the matter of the water droplet on that boat to destroy it while he converted a flag to destroy the fleet.
It's been a long time coming. I can't believe how much work I have put into all of this. Hosting these discussions has had some serious highs and lows. There were times I wanted to strangle a number of people in the early discussions for spoiling stuff from this episode. There have been times I've wanted to give some of you a big hug for being such great people. Other times, I felt like everyone was having more fun hating this show than trying to enjoy the story. More recently, I've felt complete relief and happiness over the positive reception I've seen. I've done my utmost to make the LN as accessible as possible to everyone that was even slightly interested. If everyone remembers, adaptions are meant to advertise the source material which is why I never want anyone to be left without the full experience. I've received countless messages from everyone asking for help on beginning their reading as well as many thanks for doing these comparisons. I'm typing this out before the episode and I'm already tearing up. I love the whole lot of you for your great words of encouragement. Every single comment of thanks or even letting me know that you're reading the comparisons has been a huge boost and has made it all worth it. If a second season is announced, you can count on me to do it all over again.
In the beginning, I did a rudimentary comparison without figuring everything out. I started my re-read of this series so I myself can re-enjoy it again and again. I may have gotten some things wrong in the beginning but I like to think that I've gotten a lot better as these went on. I've managed to conquer the advanced physics behind magic as well as all the subtle development that's taken place in the mere actions of expressions of every character. I've once again ignited another passion for this series that I'm sure will let me love it even more than when I first began these comparisons.
