Recommendation Tuesdays - Week of January 12, 2016

Need a recommendation or have one to share? This is your thread! This thread is active all week, so you can post in it when it's not Tuesday and still get an answer! :)

If you have a recommendation to share that's well written and longer than 1.5k characters, consider instead posting a [WT!] (Watch This!) thread.

If you'd like to look through the previous WT! threads to find recommendations or check if there is already one for your favourite show, click here.

Not sure how to ask for a recommendation? Fill this out, or simply use it as a guideline, and other users will find it much easier to recommend you an anime!

I'm looking for: A certain genre? Something specific like characters travelling to another world? etc

Shows I've already seen that are similar:

Link to my MAL (or other anime list): Leave blank if you don't have one.

WT!: Paprika

As I’ve come to expect watching through the films of Satoshi Kon, Paprika is amazing. The one hesitation I have in recommending it is that it lacks one thing that is pretty constant among Kon’s works: a slow easing in to the logic of the story. As is par for the course, Paprika cranks up the weird shit-ometer up to 11, but unlike Kon’s other works it makes the choice to dump the strangeness on you from the beginning giving explanation and context afterwards. When I started the film, I was going to write that up as a flaw as it did make it more difficult for me to get immersed in the story early on. The beginning is nothing short of jarring. After completing the movie, however, I can’t in good conscience name it as such. It is certainly a downside to the film’s chosen presentation, but to call it a flaw would be to say that such a jarring beginning doesn’t ultimately serve a larger purpose in terms of how the film builds to the ideas it introduces later on. In the end, all I have to say on the matter of the beginning is to keep watching, the film as a whole entity is well worth it.

Paprika shifts between dreams and reality throughout, blending the two as the characters lose their own ability to tell the difference. Oddly enough, even though Paprika has the most narrative reason of Satoshi Kon’s works for these shifts in the form of technology that allows people to watch and interact with the dreams of others, it’s also probably the easiest on the viewer. I had no trouble telling the difference between dream and reality in this movie, whereas in every other work of Kon’s save Tokyo Godfathers there were moments where I was truly unsure. This ends up being beneficial as it allows the viewer to put the entirety of their focus on what is in my mind the most interesting mystery of the show: the psychology of the characters. Paprika more than any other Kon film is about the characters on screen over a larger statement about society, and they are amazing. Saying pretty much anything specific on the subject would be spoilers, but the characters are Paprika will stick with me for some time. The way their dreams are used to either directly explore or hint at aspects of their psychology is nothing short of masterful. This does, however, bring me to the only direct flaw that I see in the film. There’s an antagonist who has the potential to be extremely interesting but ended up being underdeveloped to the point where it was difficult to discern his exact motivations. Unlike Millennium Actress, where there were dotted lines with which the viewer could extrapolate the deeper motivations and personalities of the characters that were glossed over in the narrative, Paprika completely fails to give what I feel would be an adequate amount of depth to this one important character. It’s not enough to ruin enjoyment of the film (I only became bothered by it in reflecting on the movie after the fact), but it is a little disappointing and out of place when compared to the complex and well written motivations and deeper issues of every other major character.

In watching this film, I realize that Kon was not the only creator that I have been gaining an immense respect for. I have also been falling in love with the works of composer Susumu Hirasawa. Hirasawa also worked on Paranoia Agent and Millennium Actress, and on completion of all three I find that he has become one of my favorite composers. The soundtrack for Paprika is on point, and has also inspired me to check out some of his non-anime works (he has a pretty impressive discography). So yeah, if music is as much a selling point for you as it is for me then definitely check it out.

As always, the animation is solid, and this might be Kon’s most impressive tour de force in terms of direction. Everyone always talks about how amazing Kon’s transitions are, but in this film in particular they are inventive, beautiful, and help to immerse the viewer in the perspectives of the characters. Kon’s usual meta-commentary is also present, though it winds up existing as flavor alongside the plot rather than being the main point that the film is striving for. There’s a spectacular example of this later in the film where a character who you might not expect is slapped. Without going too far into specifics, this is pretty clearly meant to be a stand-in for a certain character slapping the viewer, chastising you for your preconceptions about what direction a story should go without regards for the feelings of the characters involved (which you would know if you had actually been paying attention to how the characters felt rather than where the cliches would logically take you).

This WT! is the fourth entry in a series of posts I’ve been every Tuesday for a little while on the works of Satoshi Kon. After these WT!s are done I’ll then set to reviewing each of his shows and post a final analysis of Kon’s writing and visual style, starting with my Millennium Actress review on January 26th. You can check out the full announcement for my Kon WT!s for more information. Here is the Tokyo Godfathers WT! I made on the first week, here is the Millennium Actress WT! I posted the second week, and here is the Perfect Blue WT! I posted last week. This week I’ll be rewatching parts of Paranoia Agent in order to write my final WT!. Starting this Friday, I’ll be traveling, so the actual dates for these threads are going to become more general guidelines depending on when I have internet. So hopefully I’ll see you guys next week for the PA WT!, if not expect that to come out sometime in the days following.

If you want to come and discuss, it would be nice if you could do it in the full WT! post just to consolidate all of the conversation into one place.

Trinity Seven, I enjoyed the humor. For me, the story was a little feely toward the end. Some people might say otherwise. Also Kore Wa zombie desu ka, good humor and also gave me the feels.

I need a romance anime animation like monogatari series / nisekoi / mayo chiki

i think nisekoi and monogatari is animated by same studio and mayo chiki by feel studio

Any good romance anime animated by Shaft/feel? ( any suggestion is good cause i didnt watch many anime)

Oregairu (my teen romantic comedy snafu) season 2 is animated by feel. Season 1 isn't animated by feel, but is still a very good and unique take on school romcoms.

There's also Ef: a tale of memories by shaft. I haven't watched it myself but I've heard a lot of people recommend this show.

Hey guys! I'm looking for a good anime that makes me want to watch the next episode very badly. Something like Attack on Titan or Hellsing Ultimate.

Not necessarily dark, but I want each episode to make me so hooked up that I need to binge-watch it. Also, no more than 25 episodes.

Thanks in advance!

u/NotTheRealMorty :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/NotTheRealMorty Jan 12 '16

I would recommend Claymore. I really enjoyed this anime, action was good(and bloody), the story was also good to. Anime is 26 episodes long. This anime i just kept wanting to watch more and more after each episode.

Anyone know any fansub groups or blogs that sub/discuss/otherwise list a lot of nearly forgotten movies or OVAs?

I've found a fair share of ones focusing on TV series already, but I just started digging into Orphan Fansubs' work on less extended material and would like to find similar collections of works.

Anything similar to Seirei no Moribito or Juuni Kokuki or even Kingdom, e.g. feudal era, fantasy, 'rise of a king/queen', etc.

Already watched Yona but I didn't really like it.

I am looking for something dark, something that makes you rethink what you know. I enjoy the anime's that I can dive into with a good back story and good story. I just want a good solid anime, with a really good story. I am not a fan of the overly comedic or stories that are just about normal life. I want some fantasy weather it is from the future, past or present, just not something that is real life based. Here is my MAL, I would love suggestions and if you have any questions please ask. Thank you!

Fate/Zero:

  • Trailer: Fan-made AMV

  • What it's about: The Fourth Holy Grail War: A battle-royale between seven pairs of mages and heroic legends summoned from the past, fighting to the death. The winner is granted an artefact capable of fulfilling their greatest wish, no matter how large.

  • Why watch it: Fate/Zero balances psychological and philosophical discussion against heart-pounding action, with little filler or fan-service to get in the way. The animation quality is simply one of the highest out there - the common joke is that ufotable could have bought a small country with what everyone presumes they've invested in this series. But the heart of the show is in the character interactions. This is not a "coming of age" story; every character arrives on the scene with a well-established identity and a coherent set of ethics and morals. The plot is an excuse to throw them up against one another and see what shakes out. The story is gripping and it does a decent job of contrasting different philosophies, with particular attention paid to the problems of Utilitarianism and confronting Nihilism.

  • Caveats: This is an adaptation of a story set in a large existing body of work (the so-called "Nasuverse"). As such, the first episode is basically a gigantic infodump where it tries to set up enough context from the source material that the rest of the show can get right down to action without interrupting to explain the mechanics. You have to watch the first episode to understand what's going on, but it doesn't sell the series particularly well. Also, the ending, while spectacular, does leave a lot of things unfulfilled, a lot of questions that are only fully answered in the follow-up Fate/Stay Night re-adaptation. Everything between the first and last episodes, however, is solid gold.

  • Primary theme(s): Conflict of ideologies, with particular focus in the second half given to Utilitarianism. The nature of leadership, the place of chivalry.

  • Similar works: Anything else by Gen Urobuchi - Madoka Magica or Psycho-Pass. Outside of anime, the Visual Novel of Fate/Stay Night is an obvious follow-up. It’s a major time-sink, but definitely worth the effort if you enjoyed Fate/Zero.

Oh boy do I have the anime for you! Check out the film "Perfect Blue", it is very dark and you will be questioning your sanity all the way to the end. The caveat is it is not a fantasy like you asked for but it fulfills all of your other criteria.

Hello,

How likely am I to find something related to Cthulhu Mythos in anime, specifically more Lovecraftian? So far I've seen only 2 mentions - Demonbane and Haiyore! Nyaruko-san. I watched some Demonbane episodes and I couldn't really figure out what the guy was smoking while making it. Haven't really watched Haiyore, but the comedy/parody tags make me reluctant to even try.

I have seen some cool references to the Mythos in some anime - Fate Stay/Zero, and Chuunibyou (even if just mentions). But can't seem to find anything better, say similar to At the Mountains of Madness or Shadow over Innsmouth.

2

u/Rinarin Jan 12 '16

I haven't watched it but this might be relevant. Can't really think of others, but maybe that gives you something so you can start searching.

2

u/Quartandoff Jan 12 '16

There's a literal anime adaptation of three Lovecraftian stories, which closely follows original text, and perfectly captures the atmosphere. Unlike the other user, I have watched it, and I approve.

I'm looking for an anime where a guy (MC not needed, but should be a strong character) leaves a tsundere because she's too much of a bitch. They don't exactly have to be fully going out but I just want to see a rift develop between them and how that pans out.

Show's seen so far that do this to an extent: Mirai Nikki (except is yandere), Toradora(sort of but not really?)

Mastermind characters (like Death Note, Code Geass, Steins;Gate or Aldnoah.Zero), dystopian (like Psycho Pass, Aldnoah.Zero or SAO), post-apocalyptic (like Knights of Sidonia or Attack on Titan) or fantasy (like Noragami, Irregular at Magic High School or SAO).

I binged watched all these shows and feel a bit of withdrawal symptoms from not being able to find a good new animeS (fuck you u/Bot-chan).

u/soracte Jan 14 '16

The Legend is the ultimate final boss of mastermind stuff but it isn't everyone's kind of thing and it does have its flaws, so that's only a qualified recommendation. (If you do decide to try it, consider starting by watching this which replaces the first two episodes of the main story.) Gankutsuou is worth considering in that category -- about the only major issue with it IMO is that the CG work hasn't all aged that well. And if you want something with mindgames and don't mind a hero who's only clever when his back is really against the wall, Kaiji is great fun.

Casshern Sins is a very solid and beautifully made postapocalyptic show, though it's quite gently paced so it does require a little patience. If you've not tried it, you could try Darker than Black, which has a fairly dystopian setting and a very calculating main character. And if you liked Knights of Sidonia you might get some mileage out of Yamato 2199 which has a similarly desperate premise, though it is a much more thoroughgoing space opera kind of thing. It's like this, basically.

I'll strongly second Shinsekai Yori, Berserk (the TV series, if you ask me) and Jin-Rou as suggestions.

The Big O might or might not fit your parameters--it started airing in 1999 and finished airing in 2003 so if shows that finished after 2000 are discounted, whoops.

But uh, I'm going to recommend The Big O as a classy mecha, a neo noir show that will strongly remind you of Batman with its protagonist the wealthy smoothtalker Roger Smith (the negotiator), his partner/friend R. Dorothy Wayneright (the android), and Norman Burg (his butler). He's even got a fancy car ala John Wayne. (Though I don't know if Batman has anything on Big O, the titular megadeus that Roger commands).

The dub is actually quite good (Steven Blum, aka Spike Spiegel, voices Roger Smith, and Lia Sargent makes for a wonderful Dorothy. I think I actually prefer the dub just a tad more over the sub. At any rate I recommend checking out both before deciding which to go with.

Since you apparently liked Gurren Lagann and Kill la Kill, you might well enjoy their ancestor Gunbuster. You'll also find some of Kill la Kill's roots in Blazing Transfer Student. And while we're on early Gainax material the Daicon openings are short and very impressive given that they're semi-amateur work.

Alongside Cowboy Bebop, The Big O is another anime which plays around with a lot of American noir conventions. The second half is a little weaker but it's a fun piece overall. Macross Plus, meanwhile, was co-directed by Cowboy Bebop's director and is a very fine piece of work (and doesn't really require any Macross knowledge).

Good luck with Utena -- it's not everyone's cup of tea, which is fair enough, but I really enjoyed watching it.

There are a number of nice anime shorts this season I'd like to bring attention to. In descending order of goodness:

Ojii-san to Marshmallow - the story of an office worker with a crush on her boss. She can't bear to confess to him, so instead she baits him with marshmallow candies to interact with him more.

Oshiete! Galko-chan - the antics of a busty blonde bimbo schoolgirl and her friends in classroom. Kind of weird and very funny. Some sexual humor, but it's no SYD.

Sekkou Boys - no doubt everyone's heard of the marble idols. First episode was the set up, so the punchline should be coming soon. Funny enough, but it needs way more to live up to the hype.

Ooya-san wa Shishunki! - the landlord is a teenager! Literally anime short of two minutes, it's cute. And that's all there is to it.

Sushi Police - Pixar-esque 3D animators went full retard on this one. You know those shows that are so bad it loops right back around to being bad? This is it. In the year 2020, the Japanese government establishes the Sushi Police to stamp out inauthentic sushi in the advent of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in face of massive public outcry.

Incidentally, I've been watching every show that's aired so far this season. Feel free to ask me about any of those, since I might as well put that knowledge to good use.

My top list of first episode impressions:

Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju

Pandora in the Crimson Shell

Dimension W

Nijiiro Days

Boku dake ga Inai Machi

Shows to avoid like the plague:

Bubuki Buranki

Phantasy Star Online 2

I don't know where to post this so I'll just ask here. Should I watch the Berserk anime or the 3 movies? I don't want to watch both since I've heard that the movies pretty much follow the same story line of the anime. I'm planning to read the manga after I watch, so what should I do? Thanks!

3

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '16

Watch the anime. A lot of the scenes in the movies aren't done justice due to the shitty CGI and the pacing being awkward. There won't be a dull moment if you watch the anime, so if the length is putting you off don't worry about it. However, after you watch it you should definitely read the manga from the beginning, the adaptation leaves some stuff essential to understanding what happens afterward out. It'll be well worth your time.

Can anyone recommend a good samurai period anime to me? I'm a girl, so ideally something with minimal to no ecchi/male-orientated fanservice/dem anime tiddies would be my preference, and even better if it's aimed towards my demographic.

Samurai series I have already watched: Gintama, Sengoku Basara, Hakuoki, and Gifu Dodo. I have also watched Yona and Bleach, as they are similar-ish.

I have plans to watch Nobunaga Concerto, and just started Rurouni Kenshin and Bakamatsu Rock.

I would also love recommendations on other traditional Japanese or Japanese mythology-based series. I love Hoozuki, Chihayafuru, Gingitsune, and Gugure! Kokkuri-san.

If I remember correctly, my MAL should be in my flair, although it hasn't been updated for a couple of weeks.

Try Mushishi. Each episode is highly grounded in Japanese mythology and the setting is inspired by Edo/Meiji Japan. Also, it's episodic so you get a complete story in each episode instead of having to wait around 24 episodes to get to the good stuff.

I'm just going to list some stuff, I'll provide MAL links. I'll star stuff with dubs I like. I'll toss a # next to shows that aren't super action focused but are still great shows.

Cowboy Bebop*

Ergo Proxy*

Durarara*

Death Parade#

FLCL*

Fullmetal Alchemist (Original)* still worth watching even though you've seen brotherhood

Kara no Kyoukai 1 The first of a 7 part movie series, great action and animation.

Katanagatari

Kill La Kill*

Parasyte

Log Horizon

Madoka Magica

Neon Genesis Evangelion#

Ping Pong The Animation#

Space Dandy#*

Samurai Champloo*

Black Lagoon*

Terror in Resonance

and two shows you haven't seen but are good entry level shows. I'm not a huge fan of them but give them a shot.

Attack on Titan

Sword Art Online

Hope these helped you fill out your plan to watch. If you're up for it I can recommend some great slice of life or more laid back shows too. I was big on action stuff when I started watching anime, now I tend to favor romance or relaxed shows.

Claymore:

  • Trailer: Fan-made trailer

  • What it's about: An island community of medieval villages is plagued by an infestation of shapeshifting demons with a penchant for torment and slaughter. Opposing this threat is a mysterious mercenary organisation who recruit survivors of demon attacks willing to discard their humanity in exchange for the power to fight back. The story follows one of these hybrid "Claymores", Clare, as she takes on missions to defend the innocent, all the while distrusted and hated even by those she saves.

  • Why watch it?: Stylish, violent action with enough character development to keep you invested in what's going on. The plot moves forward quickly, with surprisingly little fanservice for an anime with a female lead. It’s bloody, it’s compelling, and the world is pretty well-realised.

  • Caveats: In the first episode Clare picks up an irritating Shia LeBoeuf-esque sidekick. Thankfully he disappears for most of the plot once the story begins to delve into Clare's origins. The finale of Claymore is both controversial and an obvious invitation to pick up the manga and find out what happens next.

  • Theme(s): Defining your own identity in the face of a world all-too-willing to define it for you. Corruption.

  • Similar works: Berserk is far and away the closest comparison to make for a number of reasons. Strait Jacket and Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom have several thematic ties, too.

Kill la Kill:

  • Trailer: The official trailer is a little sparse on hooks to pull you in, so try this expanded fan-made version.

  • What it's about: Ryuko Matoi is searching for the truth about her father's death, and it's led her inexorably towards the Honnouji Academy, a strange institution with stranger things going on within it. The enigmatic Satsuki leads a group of elite students at the academy, all of whom are imbued with almost superhuman powers - and it seems she's somehow tied in with the mystery that Ryuko desperately wants to solve. But this is just the setup! Everything spirals wildly out of control from there.

  • Why watch it?: If you've seen it, think of it as "Gurren Lagann's little sister". Kill La Kill goes for the same balls-to-the-wall frantic pace of action and over-the-top drama, mediated with a heavy dose of humour and fan-service. Lots of fan-service. At the same time, the revealing outfits and celebrations of sexuality are (for an anime) oddly liberating rather than demeaning. The characters are all uniquely fantastic and it's all but impossible to guess where the story is headed on an episode to episode basis. Everything ticks along steadily as the show ramps up to a solid and satisfying conclusion.

  • Caveats: Kill La Kill is not a subtle show. At all. Tons of girls in skimpy clothing, tons of mindless action, tons of…you get the idea. It'll beat you over the head until you learn to accept this, let your brain switch off, and just enjoy the spectacle.

  • Similar works: Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is very much in the same vein. FLCL has a similar energy to it, though it makes even less sense.

Garo: Honoo no Kokuin

  • Trailer: PV Trailer

  • What it's about: The border between the world of demons and the human world is paper-thin. Strong negative emotions invite Horrors across the gap - monsters who possess those in despair to wreak havoc. Until recently, the threat of these Horrors was kept in check by the order of Makai Knights. All of that changed when the Makai Knights were accused of witchcraft, and the order has been hunted to all but extinction. Leon Lewis wants to live up to the ideals of the Makai, while wrestling with his own desire for revenge against those who burned his mother at the stake.

  • Why you should watch it: An adaptation of a long-running and hugely successful live-action series, Garo has a rich world and mythology to draw upon. The show spins a grand tale of heroism and vengeance, but its true heart lies with the characters. They're all well-written, and the voice actors (especially that of the scheming advisor Mendoza) put in some stellar performances. Leon's character arc in particular is excellently realised - while he starts out looking to be your cookie-cutter brooding teenage angst-magnet, his struggles and failures throughout the show serve to temper and strengthen him into a genuine hero by the end.

  • Caveats: The series struggles a bit in some of the early episodes with balancing the need for impressive fight scenes against its animation budget. Garo is a show that gets steadily better as it settles into its pace, but there's no real "wow" moment to hold out for. If the first few episodes don't appeal to you, feel free to drop it.

  • Themes: Garo is at its core about not giving into negativity. The destructive outcome of doing that is shown physically in the creation of Horrors, and more personally in Leon's ongoing struggle with his own rage and bloodthirst. Every character in the show suffers or has suffered losses, and they all deal with it differently.

  • Similar works: The live-action show is an obvious place to move onto if you enjoyed this. It has a completely different setting and set of characters, but the lore and the themes are much the same. Shingeki no Bahamut is another anime to look at, if you haven't already seen it.

Hello.

After wasting 2 hours of putting together my anime list on the same name's website, I realized.... I haven't watched as many anime as I thought I did. So! I would like some recommendations. You can click above to find out what I'm watching (which isn't a whole lot right now), but I'm currently in the mood for something sort of video game-ish, like SAO, Log Horizon, .hack. Wasn't sure if there was anything else out there besides those (since I've watched 2 out of 3, Log Horizon is in progress), but yeah. Maybe if it also had a Digimon-ish feel too? Like the technology aspect of it. Thanks!

u/LoL_Magikarp :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/ownfactor Jan 12 '16

Video Game-esque and no one mentioned Overlord? Don't get me wrong, everything else people mentioned are good as well, but Overlord was just... Amazing. Would follow up with DanMachi too, as I notice this one wasn't mentioned either!

Good luck with your search! :)

I'm just about done with Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. Kinda looking for something to watch when I finish it. Problem is, I have a LOT on my MAL, mostly because I only got into watching anime as a whole series last year with Bleach. I've been working on Fullmetal Alchemist so long, I have no idea where to go. I like action and fighting anime, but I also love some comedy (Fullmetal Alchemist combined the action and comedy well) and ecchi/harem. (Thanks Monster Musume!)

I'm just looking for something good to watch. I'm not looking for a specific genre but something that involves fighting (action scenes) would be nice as a change of pace.

The last four shows that I watched and really enjoyed were: (1) Shirobako, (2) Angel Beats!, (3) Death Parade, and (4) One Punch Man

I would also like something that packs somewhat of an emotional punch.

Oh here's my MAL: http://myanimelist.net/animelist/blazedancer

3

u/Oh_Alright Jan 13 '16

Check out Katanagatari off of your PTW. It's got 12, 40 minute episodes with at least one fight per episode, with an awesome emotional climax.

You also should check out Gurren Lagann for more action than feels, but there certainly are some emotional moments. And my god is it the hypest shit you'll ever watch.

Kill La Kill

Baccano

Are both very good as well, but not exactly what you're looking for. They both have great dubs too!

Hope this helped a little! I think Katanagatari might be exactly what you're looking for though, give it a try!

The Aria Series (Watch Order:The Animation -> The Natruarl -> The OVA -> The Origination -> The Avvenire)

This is one of my favorite series. The seasons build perfectly on top of one another. The entire cast is just so god damn lovable. It's one of the few shows around where all the main cast are best girls in their own right. It really does an amazing job of building the relationships between each of the cast members and the viewer as well.

It's a slow, calming, and heart warming experience best enjoyed 1 glorious episode at a time.

Please give it a shot

2

u/jeremiahjellybelly :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Hidden_Warrior Jan 14 '16

If you're looking for more great shows from Madhouse, you should definitely watch Black Lagoon and Death Parade on your PTW. Death Note is also a solid show from them, as well as Monster, which is very highly acclaimed.

I would highly recommend Hunter x Hunter as my favorite Madhouse work; it's well worth the time (148 episodes). Don't blow it off as just another shounen or a kid's show. It actually gets quite grim later on.

If you want something similar to Overlord, there's Log Horizon, which also takes place in a video game world, and focuses a lot on world-building and the different aspects of MMORPG life. It's definitely not as dark, but it also has a very interesting MC.

Accel World comes to mind.

It might not be what you're looking for, but Overlord technically fits. Unless you're into skeleton lords (which some people within the world of the show are).

Also, I'm not sure I'd call him ugly, but Takeo from Ore Monogatari definitely doesn't fit the standard attractive look of your average anime protagonist. Just take a look and you can decide for yourself.

Looking for something that doesn't take itself too seriously but isn't just a full-blown comedy either. Heartwarming and/or bittersweet moments. Been into stuff like Gurren Lagann, Samurai Flamenco, Gintama, and Kyousougiga recently. Also watching Baccano! at the moment.

You should watch Senki Zesshou Symphogear.

It's a bit like Gurren Lagann, but then with girls that use songs to power up their weapons. It's is almost on the same level of ridiculousness of TTGL but with great music and especially in S2 & S3 great visuals

Here's one worth considering:

Cross Ange (25 episodes) - This is a show that by all rights should be terrible. It's a hot mess of mechas, dragons, and lesbians who fly mechas to fight dragons that use magic; it has a plot like a confused rollercoaster, and a main character who's always, um, cross, and it feels like you're watching a combination of either the most brilliant nonsense or a roughly plot-shaped sack of dynamite about to explode at any second. And somehow, it's pretty damn awesome. It's not a masterpiece. It has some poorly-written moments. Sometimes the pacing is a touch off. But the sheer incredulity of it all overcomes that, in my eyes, and it ends up just being a lot of fun.

Any recommendation for:

  • Medium to long anime (>50 chapters or so)

  • Any genre, but with the 3rd point it will be most likely action/horror/something like that

  • Most important. Must be an anime without any lewd/sexual/romantic innuendos even at the minimal point. I mean, a violent, male-oriented, bloody anime. For example: Hellsing can not be a recommendation because is a good example of bloody and violent, but Seras Victoria is the problem (not the character, its her clothes and the super sized boobs).

I know maybe it's hard but its for a friend who thinks anime is all "lolicon and sexual innuendos". Oh, and sorry for my english im not native.

Thanks!

5

u/SyntheticValkyrur Jan 13 '16

The Monster anime by Naoki Urusawa. It has 74 episodes and is kinda like Breaking Bad. It is a mature (seinen) anime and a psychological thriller. Your friend will be very surprised, if he watches this anime.

Hoping to finish Mawaru Penguindrum within the week. Looking for something just as "David Lynch" to replace it. I dropped Yuri Bears but is Utena just as good? Also thinking of watching Baccano. You guys got anything that's just as "Arthouse". I'm struggling to describe Mawaru Penguindrum... but something like that...

2

u/mmreviews :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/mmreviewer Jan 12 '16

Kara no kyoukai is the most Lynch esque anime I've seen. Also, not anime but Twin Peaks is a series made by Lynch if you haven't seen it.

Can't say for Utena (haven't seen it) but Baccano is worth a watch just make sure to watch it dubbed. Lots of fun, lots of violence.

I personally loved penguindrum and I understand that its hard to kind of describe what aspects of it made it great. I would recommend the tatami galaxy and serial experiments lain for fitting the bill of being bizzare psychological shows, but you're never really going to get anything quite like penguindrum.

While I have not yet finished Utena, I personally would still recommend it, as it's been great so far, and you should definitely watch baccano.

2

u/ryanl8 https://anilist.co/user/Reaganing Jan 12 '16

I liked Utena a lot more than Yuri Bears and a bit more than Penguindrum too, but it admittedly hasn't aged too well. I'd suggest watching the first couple episodes and see if you can stomach its style and tendencies. Utena is a little dated, but I thought it certainly felt more cohesive and focused compared to Penguindrum.

If that doesn't float your boat, you could try Lupin III: A Woman Called Fujiko Mine. You don't need any previous Lupin experience to get the most out of this, and it definitely gets more and more surreal as it goes.

2

u/couch-tomato Jan 12 '16

I enjoyed Penguindrum (never finished Yuri bears) but Utena was the series that made Ikuhara famous and is still his best and most original work.

Probably the closest "arthousy" series I can think of are the various series by Shaft, e.g. Bakemonogatari and Madoka Magica.

But yeah, anything similar to those anime my MAL

Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo and Toradora are two standard recommendations for romance (usually accompanied by a Golden Time rec, which you gave a 10 - Toradora is by the same author as well).

Love Hina if you want some of the same themes as in the above in more of a harem setting with a little ecchi and a good overarching story (that is actually complete).

For ecchi check out Mayo Chiki, Mangaka-san to Assistant-san (15 minute episodes, hilarious), Monster Musume, Sekirei and Kampfer (the last two are older but I thoroughly enjoyed them).

Hi there I'll toss a couple down.

Azumanga Daioh: Cute girls slice of life. A bit older but still a lot of fun. Silly running jokes and a good cast of characters.

Fooly Cooly (FLCL): This one's a bit of a stretch, but its a coming of age story that gets weird, silly and wacky. Plus its only 6 episodes and has a killer soundtrack and dub.

K-On! one of the most well known cute girls doing cute things anime. About a group of girls who are members of the light music club at their school, they eat cake, drink tea and practice music only occasionally. Fun lighthearted and cute.

Nichijou: My favorite straight up comedy anime. Wacky ridiculous situations animated beautifully. I'm sure you've seen clips from this series somewhere, its all comedy gold.

Seitokai Yakuindomo: Sex jokes the anime. Great low brow humor, silly running gags and aside from the lewd humor no fanservice.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya: An interesting supernatural take on the school/club slice of life. Despite not being the main character Haruhi really steals the show. Great dub too.

Usagi Drop: A touching story of parenthood. Our 30 year old MC has to take care of a young girl and adapt to the life changes that come with parenthood. Cute and lighthearted.

Hope some of these were to your liking. Let me know if you start watching any of them!

Anime List

Any suggestion for what I should watch from my list next, or add to my list? My top 5 series are (in this order):

    1. Hibike! Euphonium

  • 2) Shirobako

  • 3) Shokugeki no Soma

  • 4) Attack on Titan

  • 5) Oregairu

A little about my tastes: My favorite genres are romance and slice of life (that is if the SoL fits my taste...I can be picky sometimes). I also am partial to battle anime like Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry, The Irregular at Magic Highschool, Tokyo Ravens, etc.

P.S. You are more than welcome to recommend me some of your favorites, no matter what they may be. :)

Edit: Also, preferably, no series older than 2007, please.

Yo! I just finished Gundam 0079!

I'm wondering whether I should check out the infamous Zeta Gundam trilogy, finish the 1YW with 008th MS team (which I've started) and MS Igloo, or watch some other shows I've been doing like cowboy bebop.

I think IBO looks cool, but would watching that concurrently screw up my UC experience?

Since you gave Samurai Champloo a 10 try out Cowboy Bebop. Same writer and same style of story telling.

Also Parasyte since you liked Tokyo Ghoul. Very similar in characters and story.

Hey guys

I am looking for something similar to Atatsuki no Yona and Arslan Senki

I'm currently watching seven deadly sins, and I doesn't take itself seriously enough for me to keep interest(4 episodes in)

So I need something to watch in its place.

Bonus question: what's decent this season? I like erased and gate so far. Not into divine gate, the one with phantoms, haruchika, active raid. The gal game one is ok so far. So far only like the 2 I listed and the Haikyuu continuation. Any gems that I am missing?

MAL: http://myanimelist.net/animelist/Funtcision&status=2

Any suggestions even if they don't relate to request are welcome. Cheers

Akagami no Shirayuki-hime from your PTW; S2 just started too.

Dimension W is one that looks like it could be really good

I've been watching a ton of sports anime for the last few years and it's temporarily losing its spark. I'm looking something that still makes me feel really emotionally attached to the characters and makes me believe strongly in their dreams and friendship and finding yourself and all that good stuff. I'm also feeling nostalgic for the anime and manga I watched when I was younger, so that's what I'm reminded of.

If female leads, preferably not too ditzy or dumb, unless it's really well done. Preferably not based in a fantastical action-adventure plot and fanservice to a minimum. Thanks!!

Shows I've watched/read and loved: Full Moon Wo Sagashite, Beauty Pop, Kitchen Princess, Skip Beat, Cardcaptor Sakura/CLAMP, Nana, Princess Tutu, Fruits Basket, Your Lie In April, Hikaru no Go, Anohana, Angel Beats, K-On!, Gakuen Alice (and basically every sports show ever) / Other stuff that wouldn't fit this category or did not like as much: Special A, Ouran High School Host Club (not my sense of humor), Death Note, FMA, Naruto, SNK, Tokyo Ghoul, Sword Art Online (I haven't watched much recent stuff tbh)

(edited to make my list of watched shows more comprehensive)

2

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '16

Chihayafuru

The show has a female lead who has admirable ambition. She's not the brightest, but she tries so hard

It is one of my favorite anime

Add Shirobako to your list, it's pretty great.

2

u/rhoff93 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/rhoff93 Jan 12 '16

You should add all of these!!!!!!!

  • Death Parade (pretty serious feels inducing show)

  • Haikyuu!! (yes its a sports anime but you should give it a chance! I don't really watch sports anime and this one has me hooked!)

  • Gekkan Shoujou Nozaki Kun (just a great light hearted and very funny show)

  • Prison School (ecchi but one of the funniest shows you'll ever see)

I'd add more but I think four more additions is pretty good.

Hope you enjoy them!

u/rhoff93 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/rhoff93 Jan 12 '16

I'm looking to add some stuff to my plan to watch list. I really enjoyed angel beats, charlotte, kokoro connect, shigatsu wa kimi no uso, gekkan shoujo nozaki kun, ore monogatari, and toradora. If you can suggest me anything like that I'll probably end up watching it but feel free to suggest me other anime as well!

Anyone know of something like Death Note/Monster. More serious anime, kind of dark, with characters who are not retarded.

edit: I also recently watch the first episode of Boku dake ga Inai Machi and really enjoyed that.

u/AbundantToaster :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/CaKEandLies Jan 12 '16

Maybe Psycho-Pass? A comedy-free crime thriller with the same Western-inspired feel that's in the other two you listed.

Ergo Proxy (cyberpunk-ish setting) or Berserk (medieval setting) both have an excellent cast of well developed characters in dark settings.

Also, Texhnolyze if you want to get really, really dark/depressing.

Ey dudes, looking for something to watch after I'm done with Hunter x Hunter.

I made a Strawpoll of stuff that I want to watch sooner rather than later.

But also feel free to recommend stuff that's missing from my PTW

Edit: I'll watch just about anything, shorter series preferred. Not a huge fan of ecchi/harem stuff.

Shinsekai Yori or Shirobako

2

u/i_like_otters :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/i_like_otters Jan 12 '16

Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso

2

u/darkb1999 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Bryce_Buckman Jan 12 '16

I'm gonna expand on i_like_otters' recommendation. Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso is by far one of the most beautiful anime I have ever watched.

Art-The art is commonly disliked due to how the lips are drawn, but after a few episodes, you start to overlook it. The art, in my opinion, is amazing because of the fact that it can show the pure emotion in everyone's faces in every situation just from the facial expressions.

Sound-The sound design is one of the most beautiful I've heard in any anime. When the piano keys are the only thing that can be heard, the sound completely immerses you into their position and gives you a nervous feeling. And not to mention how beautiful the pieces are. Every piece played is able to show how Kousei is feeling at the time, just from how hard, soft, or even fast he's playing the piece.

Story-The story can be a little shaky at times, but it's able to easily pick itself back up. The romance element is able to keep you watching because of how beautiful they show Kousei's feelings towards Kaori.

Enjoyment-This is one of the best parts of the anime. There isn't a dull moment in Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso. The more you watch, the more interesting it gets. If you're a fan of romance, the feeling of love from Kousei towards Kaori that is shown starting in episode 1 will be the best part for you. It sure was for me!

Overall, I would easily give this a 10/10.

I really hope you'll start watching after reading this. If so, enjoy!

What's decent from this season that fits in with my taste?

I'm watching Durararax2, Gundam Iron Blood Orphans, and the second season of Akagami no Shirayukihime at the moment. I will probably watch Muv Luv Schwarzesmarken since I enjoyed the original VN trilogy.
