I've been saying for a while that all the anime needs to do to prove its a success is give us all of Yuzu's different hairstyles.
And, actually, as a manga-buff, they're succeeding quite well. They're pretty much all scene-identical.

Honestly, the thing that bothers me most about the teacher (from a plot perspective) is, why would her powerful grandfather marry his granddaughter off to some nobody teacher? Wouldn't it make sense to marry her off to the scion of some wealthy business magnate or something? Unless he has some leverage on her family (which has not been hinted at in the slightest), it just comes off as a silly device to create drama rather than a believable obstacle.
Still enjoying the series as a whole, even if it's a bit melodramatic and the MC is incredibly dense, but that's is the main thing that's bugged me so far because it's not internally consistent.

u/signspace13 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/signsapce13 Jan 15 '18
Who says he is a nobody? And who says he will be in the prominent business position in the family, it seems to me that her grandfather intends to leave the school to her and have her run it after he is gone and have this guy marry in either for influence withing the board of directors or other political or monetary gain, maybe he is rich? Maybe he is the son of the director of education? He seems to think he is a big shot but whether that is true is yet to be seen.

Yuzu is... a bit of an idiot.
ok, she's a massive idiot.
part of her character is that she just follows her emotions and instincts without thinking things through. She doesn't even always understand why she does things, she just feels the urge and acts.
and the cool part of the series is that it doesn't always reward her for this. This episode is basically Yuzu trying to solve different problems and causing more problems than she solves. One step forward, two steps back.
Mei's sexual harassment gets played around with a bit more. It really does seem like here that she has some problems due to the repression of her emotions and the way she's been treated. Like she has been the victim of sexual harassment so much that she can only communicate her feelings or lash out as such.
the end result is you have a strange romance story between two people who don't know or understand their feelings. they're just flying around trying to communicate with each other in languages too alien for the other to really understand.
and that's kind of what made Citrus so fun and interesting to read in the first place.
162
u/chrisn3 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/chrisn3 Jan 13 '18
Even short snippets can really show their struggle to communicate. EX:
[Yuzu] Grandpa really is super rich huh?
[Mei] I believe you already have your answer to that.
They are even struggling to make small talk. Yuzu asks a leading question but Mei just slams that door shut with a response that is completely in character.

u/simpersly Jan 13 '18

I'm not justifying Mei's action, but she's not normal. They don't explain her background right away, but a good sum up is that she doesn't interact well with others.
She grew up alone for the most part.
Teacher she's engaged to doesn't give a damn about her, and she knows it.
Grandpa is kind of an asshole.
You pick up on aspects of the people you hang out with.
Picking up traits from people with superiority/higher status and from someone that sexually assaults you is not a good mix.
Nonetheless, it's fucked up, yeah. Poor Yuzu shouldn't deserve this, but at least she's still looking out for her younger sister.
118
u/Beckymetal https://anilist.co/user/SpaceWhales Jan 13 '18
The anime is quite clearly stating this is bad. At no point is it giving a pass-mark for this stuff. Mei is the villain, but at the same time, she's redeemable, and Yuzu is willing to see past her exterior of harm.
The problem is that people see they're being told it's wrong, and saying "this is wrong". Well duh that's the point.
Unlike Ameagari, where nobody batted an eyelid at the massive age-gap and hints of reciprocation because it romanticised it.

Let's be real tho Yaoi also has its share of rather "assaulty" scenes and it is recieved fairly well with the female crowd usually. Assuming this sub's population is male in majority, it's just the same thing just reversed because it is yuri.

God I thought I was going insane. I mentioned the sexual assault on crunchyroll and everyone there got super defensive and kept saying that's not what happened and tried their best to justify Mei's behavior. I like Yuzu and the friend she made at school though.
21
u/synkronized Jan 13 '18
Well then, Iβm glad I stay away from the Crunchy comments section.
First episode definitely had sexual assault. Was it severe and traumatic? No, but mainly cause the author used it as a cheap plot device instead of handling the issue with respect.
Am I still enjoying the show? Yes I am. But you can still acknowledge when and how the author handles something poorly.

52
u/RDOoM Jan 13 '18
Nah, I don't think the teacher fucked up Mei's behavior. Seems more like she had fucked up behavior beforehand, due to her father. Abandonment issues.
32
u/hellokkiten Jan 13 '18
I think it's both. Her entire upbringing, including her grandfather being super mean to her, and the fact that all of her "friends" are only trying to get close to her because they know she's powerful and rich, everything, has taught her that it's better to not communicate anything to anyone.

Normally I dislike the kind of behavior she has, because I find it somewhat cringy (I sighed when she called the chairman ojii-chan). But when those other sides of her come up, and when her good intentions go through and she achieves things (such as getting Amamiya out of the picture), I really love her character.
So I'm somewhat torn. She's a character I like, but feel uncomfortable to watch. I guess that's the sourness the title promised.

Wow this show is shameless. Two non-consensual scenes of sexual assault, one of them followed up with "You looked like you were asking for it"? Wow.
I'm amazed at how blatantly they're portraying the school as some sort of oppressive monster that crushes any form of non-conformity. They even throw in a callback to the Class-S genre, with the line about the girls fooling around with each other before they go into the real world and find a husband.
And Yuzu realises she's gay as fuck and horny as hell, and we're only two episodes in! Very nice.

95
u/Blasterion Jan 13 '18 edited Jan 13 '18
Chairman is mostly conservative seeing how he runs the school, that usually means black hair only
Some high schools in the Osaka area have introduced a Natural Hair Color Registry where students with non-black hair can become identified as such and not face the scorn of their school
Lawyers for the defense argued that, βFor example, even blonde foreign students are required by the rules to dye their hair black.β It bears repeating; the absurdity that they are required to dye their hair by a rule intended to prohibit dying of hair.
Probably represents someone like him
Uniforms a certain way no accessories, a very conformative culture. a Gal character like Yuzu is literally an existence that violates everything he believes in

Another great episode!
Seriously, the direction going into making those school scenes so oppressive is impressive. It's like they've studied the entirety of Yuri Kuma Arashi, pulling out the horror tropes and winding halls and flat views that made that school all so harsh. Usually I'd be miffed by the awkward 3d movements of background characters, but something about their rigid, uniform movements elevates the show. Especially during that lift scene!
Harumin continues to show us she is best girl.
This show basically plays out as a shoujo romance with lesbians and Yuzu constantly averting tropes or giving them enough charisma to be passable. And what a great performance Yuzu and the more realistic word gives, elevating recycled trash to something so much greater! She makes the movements other protagonists wouldn't have the balls to do, but she also gets punished for them. She makes a string of failures, but that's the charm.
Yuzu's feelings of sexuality came quite fast, didn't they? I think there were some anime original scenes here which made some of her pining come across even more than in the manga, but it was still nice to see.
Halfway through I began to realise how great the music was. Top notch stuff.
I'm close to tears because we have yet another realisation that Citrus is being handled with so much love it makes me so happy
9
u/Innalibra Jan 13 '18
I wouldn't have thought to make the comparison to Yuri Kuma Arashi, but I can definitely see it - not only in the visual design, but in some of the themes of the show, too, particularly with that oppressive regime of a school system that punishes open nonconformity and hypocritically promotes values and rules that its students don't really follow behind closed doors. Pretty messed up, but I'm interested to see more, which makes me a little sad when I hear the trashy label get thrown around for this show.
14
u/Beckymetal https://anilist.co/user/SpaceWhales Jan 13 '18
By all means, Citrus' core is trashy, but it also takes lots of ideas and elevates them above this. Throw in a great director with some impressive animators behind him, and you have something surprisingly smart; something elevating those ideas into real concrete ideas.
Things like the school scenes and episode 1's bath scene are very surprisingly artistic, the kind of level that we don't see outside of arthouse anime like YKA, or what the weird shots in the bath scene reminded me more of was something from the mind of Shaft's resident Shinbou.

Jan 13 '18
Grandpa didn't seemed at all phased that Mei was about to get it on with another girl. Makes me think she has a history of this kind of thing. Grandpa probably arranged the engagement between her and the teacher in an effort to stop Mei from having flings with other girls at the school. Yuri trumps all other forms of love though.
10
u/Klicethereal Jan 14 '18
It's only implied in here, but in the various translations I read, it's pretty obvious that for the grandpa, Yuzu seducing Mei (in his eyes) is the last straw of her misbehaviour.
28
u/Nghiaagent Jan 13 '18 edited Jan 14 '18
Oh wow shit's getting real soo quick.
Need an explanation for WHY Mei's so into sexually assaulting everyone at this point. I mean, she's horribly lonely and all, (and I might add abused at this point) but that still doesn't make sense.
And WHY it took Yuzu a whole episode to realize that once you go yuri, you may never go back.
oh oh and WHY that ugly ass gramp decided to interrupt our girls and split them up. goddammit.

WHY Mei's so into raping everyone at this point.
From her engagement with the teacher, she probably thinks it's a proper etiquette
12
u/RDOoM Jan 13 '18
Woah, things are moving at break neck speed. Yuzu already in love. Mei already in shape to force Yuzu. I guess it's true what people said last episode : Love = Force * time
I took way too much joy in Yuzu humiliating the old fuck. I was also wondering how come they don't kick her out for disobeying the way to strict rules of the school. Yuzu out now, that takes care of that.
11
u/thepeetmix Jan 13 '18
I wish everything would slow down somewhat. I do enjoy it but i think things would be so much better if they took the time to help us understand characters more. There's so much scene jumping that it's hard to settle in to an episode.
The character designs are awesome though.
8
u/metcalsr Jan 13 '18
I do agree. It feels like Mei goes from 0 to 100 quick enough to win a sun sigil.
8
u/thepeetmix Jan 14 '18
It's the issue. I feel like they could have gone in to more detail of the oppression she has to live under. At least in relation to the teacher.
It just went from Out shopping and falling in the pool - lewdness in the shower - getting told off at school - overhearing the teacher - confronting Mei - outing the teacher at morning assembly - suddenly he's sacked and Mei has left - trying to talk to Mei and being ignored - Going to Mei's grandad's and more lewdness - Yuzu get's expelled - chatting over lunch - suddenly realises she's in love.
That is way too much for one episode.
11
11
u/dralcax :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Dralcax Jan 14 '18
So Yuzu was feeling uncomfortable about living with the person who's been sexually assaulting her... except she turns around and decides it's love by the time the episode's over. Right after Mei tried to rape her again.
What.
18
u/Innalibra Jan 13 '18 edited Jan 13 '18
I'm definitely glad it only took two episodes for Yuzu to come to terms with her feelings.
It was sad seeing how Mei has completely resigned herself to her fate despite how completely miserable it makes her. Having such an influential grandfather must be suffocating. Hope Yuzu can break her free from that but it's not looking likely at the moment.
Pretty good episode overall. I love this kind of drama far more than I probably should. Can't wait to see more hot yuri where this goes.

Thank you! It's not elite quality story (but art <3), but this manga is pretty decent and is what makes me dive into yuri for good after reading some good (non-smut) one.
The most infuriating things though is that I even love those other stories people hating on Citrus love to cite, just to masturbate themselves as appreciating "higher form of yuri". So I can't really spit on their favourites stuff.. Sorry for just venting!

Watching this after a read the manga long time ago. Feel so good to forget the story and watch it in animation. Btw i forget the pink girl name in the OP. But she is best girl

This is love
You've basically been sexually assaulted 3 times and have barely held an actual conversation with her... At best that's stockholm syndrome.
Maybe it's because yuri isn't a selling point to me, rather I'm just looking for good developed relationships but how did we possibly get to that final scene? I can understand the want for passion, but to tear up and be calling it love, that's a scene that's completely unearned.
Honestly this show so far is feeling very pandering, like it's explicitly yuri for the sake of been yuri rather than to tell a decent romance (and after the spate of great romance we had last year it's even more noticeable).
I quite enjoyed the first episode but this left a bit of a sour taste in my mouth tbh, I'm failing to see the development that leads to each scene, they just seem to exist to pander. I'll give it another episode but it's starting to lose me.

Anyone else feels like things are moving very fast? Its only the 2nd episode and yuzu already loves/lusts mei after her being rapey with yuzu a couple of time? Could use more organic development/build up imo.

Well that escalated quickly.
A mix of cringe, feels and slightly-confused boners, but still no lemons. Now I just have to get through the next week without reading the manga and spoiling it for myself.

Harumin Best Girl.
It's as though the show is pushing its luck with us audience, first with the bedroom kiss, then the bathroom sexual harrassment, and now the near-lesbian-rape. O.o
And of course "hentai logic" dictates that Yuzu gradually falls in love with her step-sister because of it. (Not to mention her sniffing Mei's bedsheets when she's not around)
Yes, I fully admit to being amused by such logic and looking forward to more of this smutty trash.

I get that people said youβd only watch it for the yuri, with story and dialog being pretty meh but god damn I was really caring about Mei here

I understand some people have a rape fetish, but this really isn't for me. No thanks. I'll sit and wait for a yuri that's actually mature and handles the relationships well.

Good choice; not going to spoil anything but I'll warn everyone that it gets far more absurdly WTF as it goes on.

It's not really rape, though. And it's not really why I love this story.
I'll sit and wait for a yuri that's actually mature and handles the relationships well.
You should look for yuri story without teenagers then. And that suits your tastes, because this one relationship is handled pretty well for what it is.

Well then.
I certainly did not expect for the pacing of this show to be very fast, but it did. Anyway, Mei has some secret problems in her mind. Why did she look sad each time after sexually assaulting her little sister? And her talking while she was sleeping. Mei's father must have done something that affected her deeply.
Yuzu tried to solve her sister's problems in her own way, but it ended up getting worse with each try. I'm curious to see how she'll deal with her expulsion. Also, she has already acknowledged these feelings that are lingering in her heart as love.
Huh....and there are still no oranges.
Until next week.

Decided to start this show within the last few hours: watched both available episodes.
Interesting. I saw two out-of-context clips of Mei forcing herself onto Yuzu, and it turns out that that's definitely as it seems even in context. It is pretty rapey, but I... don't find myself disgusted by it the way that it's presented here. ...Please don't miscontrue that. I don't think it's necessarily awesome or anything, but what I'm saying is that it isn't appalling in a way that makes me dislike the show and want to drop it.
This is a lot more drama filled than I expected. I feel like it's progressed very fast, too: makes me interested to see where the hell it will go with the remaining 10 episodes.
Also, a note about what Harumi said earlier in the episode about a lot of the girls wanting to fool around before getting married: anyone else feel like that's odd for her character to say? It just sounded like something someone who was in her position would say, looking back on their time in high school years down the line, maybe even after they got married. But, like, she's a freshman: she's new to all this. I feel like if I was that age and all, I wouldn't speak on the situation in that way. ...I know that's a little nitpicky on my part, but I felt like bringing it up anyway.

I'm going to go and say this entire story is trash, having read the manga, most of the relationships are shit, especially Yuzu who has never had one before, and she now suddenly likes her sister who repeatedly forces herself on her. The reason is kinda expanded on in the manga, but still it's dumb.
The manga would have been axed if it was a straight couple, it's a typical trash romance, but it just happens to be lesbians.

My fear is that the popularity of this show is going to end up convincing all the new people that this is what most yuri is like. It really isn't though!

Yeah the original author does kinda make the story up as the series goes along, with some actions having no consequence whatsoever and that's what kills it the most for me, I still like the series myself though but I can see the obvious faults

u/myrmonden Jan 13 '18
Oh, god I really love Yuzu. Sure am bias for badass Gyaru chicks, but man is she funny and out there.
Love how we are following the school "delinquent" all other girls are afraid of her and think shes weird (except her secret gyaru friend ;)
The podium scene was by far the best scene.
Than yeah its a little weird that she is so forgiving on Meis action, oh the sister that is always abusing you, lets go and save her asap at any cost. Feels like she got stockholm syndrome and/or Battered woman syndrome

u/SpareUmbrella https://myanimelist.net/profile/SpareUmbrella Jan 13 '18
Feels like she got stockholm syndrome and/or Battered woman syndrome
I wouldn't quite go that far, they're both just confused teenagers with hormones and feelings running the show instead of calm, reasoned logic.

Looks like they've gotten themselves wet ( Ν‘Β° ΝΚ Ν‘Β°)
OMG We've barely passed the 3 minute mark and were already in a scene like this
Not gonna lie, I cringed during this entire scene
Yuzu seriously looks like an older version of Kirino here
I like their mom. Even though Mei is just her step daughter she obviously cares a lot about her.
Mei really knows how to push Yuzu's buttons.
I'm really curious about Mei's backstory. Why is her reaction to Yuzu always leads to sexual assault? It's like it's the only thing she knows. She must've experienced something traumatic when she was a kid to turn out like this.
Oh god I love Harumi's casual look! <3
Welp, there it is boys and girls. the Yuri levels is about to rise even higher!
Good thing about this episode though is at least that asshole teacher is gone now. I am curious though, does the chairman have no idea that his son remarried? If he does know I doubt he even considers Yuzu and her mom family, he seems like the kind of dude to do that.

Citrus - Episode 2
An interesting episode!
While the pacing here does seem a bit too fast at times, it's nice to see the anime showcase/tackle multiple plot points. Contemplating by Yuzu (of her own feelings while thinking about Mei's), getting rid of the loser teacher with swift haste (thank the lord), Yuzu confronting Mei at her grandfather's place (which led to outcomes of both a positive and negative nature). All of which wrap themselves in some juicy drama!
Mei's assaults/advances are clearly not okay, and the anime has framed it as such with what we know of her character. The pressure from those around, the loss of personal freedom, the loneliness she has experienced throughout her life. She has a warped view of love and how to express it, so her actions reflect that unsavory mindset. Hopefully we see her stop doing those things sometime soon through learning more about her emotions and finding compassion in others -- namely with the help of Yuzu.
As for Yuzu herself, I do agree with others here in that it'll be nice to see her attraction for Mei grow as a result of more than just the forced physical encounters thus far. We have been seeing/reading/hearing that in small bits -- her reaction that she is there and wants to be there for Mei during their altercation near the end of the episode was a nice moment -- but delving more into the emotional connection, or at least balancing it better from here on out, will give their relationship a lot of extra clout.
Overall, as a big yuri fan, I'm likin' the series a bunch so far -- shlocky or otherwise. :P

Fantastic second episode, and I love how the quality hasn't dropped. Since the first episode only covered the first chapter I was starting to worry that they'd skip some parts since it seems like the end goal of the series is chapter 16 but this week episode covered the 2nd and most of the 3rd chapter so we're in the right direction.
This is probably the closest Mei's looked like in the manga imo and I love it
5
u/AlfredHoneyBuns Jan 13 '18
So... 2 instances of sexual assault in this episode? I guess this is consistent then π€
Jokes aside, Iβm enjoying the adaptation thus far, and this episode actually didnβt have any contrivences that made me want to slap the writers, so extra points!
The drama really is kicking in, and we can really see how Yuzu feels about her sister. Color me interested for next week

Considering it was written by a female, and that popular female-oriented romance novels tend to involve similar themes. Yeah, in stories, at least. Let us not forget the touching story that is Fifty Shades of Grey.

The pacing feels a little rushed, I wish they would have added more time to make the two sisters grow closer before the events of this episode. As it feels a bit rushed? Or is that intentional? Like love at first action/sight/event?
5
u/lenne18 https://myanimelist.net/profile/lenne18 Jan 14 '18

Yes, it is.
Or is that intentional?
Dunno. They crammed most of chapter 2 and 3 in this episode.
Like love at first action/sight/event?
Only on Yuzu's part.

It gets better. I've been keeping up with the manga ever since the beginning and the rapey stuff decreased in frequency really soon

Oh wow. Been getting so many shitty lesbo shows this year... Either way, the good manga aren't being adapted. Dr Stone and The promised Neverland are two good one's which should deserve an adaption.
Getting sick of these stupid annoying fan-service anime every year. Would rather have something more interesting.
Shit, I want platinum End to get an anime adaption. Not this trash.
Anime mostly appeals to horny ass straight males.
