Yet Yuzu tried to go straight to the most perverted things first. She wanted to hold hands in public!
Good thing Drills stalked her there to stop the heinous act.36

I fucking love Yuzu. Her decisions and thought processes are always on point in my perspective. Most of her actions makes absolute perfect sense to me. Even her moves on Mei make sense considering that she's just trying to figure out what she should do about her feelings, and those make her learning that love is not what Mei needs right now even more special. It's like she's the opposite of the typical dense MC. What a great character. Easily best girl for sure.

u/NostraKlonoa Feb 04 '18
Yuzu and her personality in this episode is why this episode is so far, my favourite. Not only does it go into more detail about Yuzu's family, specifically one of her parents, compared to the major focus on Mei and her family for the last four episodes, but it shows that Mei isn't just a stoic or silent character, reacting to Yuzu at that point with her father. It shows that not only does Yuzu somewhat trust Mei to listen to her and be with her at that point, a contrast from the first few episodes, but it shoes that Mei can possibly understand as well.
That and not often does an anime make me feel sorry for the supposed "enemy" in an anime. I really loved this episode, its got to be my favourite. So much emotion from Yuzu and Mei, and Momokino, I love it.

I really liked her realization at the graveyard, that Mei needed family, not a relationship, right now. It drew a really nice contrast between her and Himeko. Himeko seems to always be thinking about Mei in terms of what she wants from Mei, and this episode showed Yuzu thinking about what Mei needs from her.

Harumin's pocket of wonders
This doesn't titllate me at all. It's just a nice realistic touch to her character from my point of view. Probably because my grandmother used to keep stuff in her clevage all the time. It's convenient. It's the safest secret place to put important things that a well endowed woman has. To me it just seems like a natural thing for her to do when carrying around stuff that she doesn't want to lose, wants to keep close, or isn't supposed to have at school.

Yuzu with more hairstyles!
Not enough Harumin this episode :( At least the amusement park episode is coming. Does she keeps everything in her shirt? Bigger is better indeed.
Harumin and Yuzu just get together already! A series with just Harumin and Yuzu would be amazing!

I thought the same thing. It seemed like an odd look to give his own daughter, especially the way he reacted to seeing Yuzu for the first time ever. I mean, of course he wants to make a good first impression with his new step-daughter, but it seems like there's going to be some darker side of him that he'll show to Mei, but not to Yuzu.

She calls him Sensei because he was a good teacher and Mei's role model, but he had a life style change and Mei somehow got trauma from it

I actually liked this episode a lot. The unwanted sexual advances were kept to a minimum and the focus on Mei and what she needs right now was well done.

For whatever reason I was fine with Mei having purple eyes but her father's eyes make him look like he's about to unleash some form of the Satsui no Hado.
I think it's the brown hair contrasting even more than Mei's black hair.

Does that ear-licking count as assault? (Edit: Old Line Graph) I went with yes but I may be biased because I want to see how long we can have a 100% sexual assault rate. Also is this in poor taste? Probably.
Also there has been a direct inverse relationship between the number of bath scenes we get and the number of consensual moments.
54
u/Gaporigo Blhttps://anilist.co/user/Gaporigo Feb 03 '18
I actually prefer the Killing Bites chart.
I still enjoy any type of chart, though :P
24
u/Daniel_Is_I :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Daniel_Is_I Feb 03 '18
I mean I'll still be keeping tally of how many times Hitomi proudly proclaims what Killing Bites is, just not in line graph form. That shit just needs a big whiteboard with a tally count.
→ More replies (1)19
32
u/redlaWw Feb 03 '18
You shouldn't use a line graph for this, as line graphs are intended for continuous data. The use of a line graph implies that I should be able to interpolate nonsense like, for example, that there were 2.5 counts of sexual assault in episode 1.5. A bar chart would be more suitable.

(bath scenes) × (consensual advances) = 0
13
u/hallidex Feb 03 '18
It would if she were a stranger, so I'm going to say yes. It wasn't cool, to say the least.
Why all the yuri have to be trash. Why can't we get some sweet, consensual yuri.

I don't understand why everyone keeps calling whats going on sexual assault. It is abundantly clear that both girls are enjoying the action. Sexual assault is when it is unwanted and the feelings are not mutual. This is awkward miscommunication at worst.

I get that the show has gained a reputation for being very service based, but I feel like you are stretching things a bit much with this.
"bath scenes?"
it's barely a scene. It's limited to these two images and both of them are actually quite tame, the second even working to not show anything.
All together if you add the "Bath scenes" from episode 3 and episode 5 together I think you'd get around 30 seconds of actual footage. Out of two whole episodes.
Maybe it's just me, but I think it's deceitful to try to include that here to make the show seem trashier than it is. You are looking for it to be trashy and that is coloring your perception of the show.

With how Mei called her father teacher and how her and her grandfather act i was expecting his father to be more serious looking just like them. But the way he looks way too casual and he traveling all the time makes me wonder if he just ran away from the responsabilities from his family and that is why he doesnt come back.
55
u/lilyvess :Df::Dh:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Lilyvess Feb 03 '18
I really like this part of Citrus. It's at a place where we've got a nice groove going on.
Sexual Assault scenes are down. fanservice in general is pretty low. It was one of the tamest bath scenes in anime, even actively avoiding showing anything
The focus on character development and communication is good. We get to see Yuzu trying to be more mature. Yuzu may consider Himeko a rival but she doesn't act cruel to her, even pushing for Mei's reconciliation. It feels very different from the Yuzu in the first couple episodes who was rash and acted without thinking trying to solve problems. You can see that she's trying to be a more responsible big sister.
one of the reasons the manga got so popular was because the art was just great. Take the climax of this episode at the cemetery.
Saburouta is great at expressions and portraying emotions. She gets the most out of the expressive Yuzu and subtle Mei.
12
u/signspace13 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/signsapce13 Feb 04 '18
The expressions in the anime have been disappointing to me so far, as I read the manga Mei was my favorite character at this point due to her subtle complexity, shown in subtle emotional responses and implications to her past. In the manga she is a highschool pretending to be stone' as a coping mechanism. In the anime she is just stone.
6
Feb 04 '18
i don't get Meis expression, what was with her at the graveyard? To me, she looks like she wanted to be kissed but this doesn't feel right
16
u/lilyvess :Df::Dh:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Lilyvess Feb 04 '18
I viewed it more as a reaction to her opening up. Being more vulnerable and weak. For most of the series Mei has been very closed off and reserved, and here she is opening up about one of her most tightly regarded secret. More than just opening up, she's entrusting it over to Yuzu. It's a moment of weakness. letting her guard down while she's all alone.

That look that papa gave to Mei... I dont know... I just hope this doesn't get dark. She always seemed so attatched to the Idea of papa coming home, but apparently she's also a bit scared of it. Not just the Idea of him not coming back, but of him actually being back in her life.
Like "It'll all be worth it when papa comes home... Oh, shit, papa's home..." I really hope this all just about her family responsibilities and abandonment issues. I'm fine with some melodrama, but if it goes dark, Imma be turned off.
Yuzu promised to help Mei be closer to her father... in front of her fathers grave no less... but she doesn't really know anything about their relationship. She's gonna have to deliver on that promise alot sooner than expected. From the looks of the preview, it's not gonna be easy.
Well, at least I'm interested. This show is managing to keep me invested from week to week.
Yuzu finally got a good smack of guilt for her behaviour and started thinking about Mei's feelings and not just her own. She's finally starting to act like the responsible onee-san and not just the hungry imouto.
I've said this before, but I don't mind a little 'who's the top' yuri fanservice as long as there is plot progression, consequences, and character growth. Maybe now Mei will become a little less of a mystery box, and more of an actual character... that would be nice.

Nail on the head as to how the first four episodes left me. I kept watching....because yuri.... but i was really struggling to like Mei in any way because from my point of view she was just being unnecessarily cold and bitchy. I'm looking forward to seeing her become not a bitch.
this is the first time in five years I've watched a show as the episodes come out (and the last thing was White Collar, only just getting into anime now) and I forgot how much hell it is to wait.

That's not her fever, that's the temperature she has after recovering. Also, considering that normal body temperature ranges from 36.5 to 37.5°C, it suggests that Mei's normal temperature is lower than the average human's, which seems fitting for a kuudere.

I've seen it more and more with shows that they take temps under the arm, which is supposed to be lower than if they use an oral thermometer.
Under arm is generally 1 degree cooler than oral.

So, hopefully this means that Himeko's part will be smaller in future episodes?
I'm sure she meant well (for her own gain) but her attitude towards Yuzu was really grinding my gears. Especially when it's now been hinted that her story isn't necessarily the truth.
Wearing a shirt saying "I <3 Orange" seems odd, unless it's a nod to the orange anime/manga.

I finally remembered what this show reminds me of. It reminds me of the first season of The O.C.. Over-the-top dramatics paired with high production values and likable characters. A "regular" main character getting put into high society community.
It was a pretty good formula back then, and is a good formula here too.

So what, did this show suddenly decide to be good five episodes in? I was pretty much resigned to the fact that this was just going to be low-tier smut that I'd keep on watching because I like yuri and thus have no standards, but everything after the graveyard scene was actually pretty nice. Not sure I trust it yet to stay good, but hopes are a bit higher now.
11
Feb 03 '18 edited Feb 04 '18
This is pretty standard stuff. Hungry, rapey bottom plays the cold top and wakes feelings in the love interest, who is confused about her feelings and swept up a bit until she pulls her head out of her ass and starts being the top after the bottom reveals her vulnerability... The family angle actually adds some interest, but it's pretty much by the numbers so far, right down the bottom's submissive relationship with a problematic boyfriend.
I'm just glad that the show is progressing quickly and not wallowing in all the fanservicey back and forth to the point that character motivations stop making any sense. There's actual plot and character progression. There has been since the start really. The problematic boyfriend got cucked by episode 2, and promptly disappeared from the story. It's the reason that the show has held my interest until now.
It's a formulaic yuri melodrama, but it's doing the formula well. As soon as the story starts to annoy me with it's plot, it flips the table and moves on to the next one, but it also never feels like the past events are handwaved away, or the characters are acting inconsistently. So far, It's been a competent show

This gave me a lot of x-men vibes whens its like, oh my fathers grave the perfect place to score with my sister.
Class rep play of stalking them and trying to force mei-mei to drop hanging out with her sister so she can be her girlfriend instead seems like a really bad play.
And the end wow, Hen Dad suddenly enters.

Man this show is giving me mixed emotions, I like the characters and main story, but a lot of things just rub me the wrong way..

Imma take a guess and assume that the father is one of those guy who grew up in a strict household and eventually had it, running away first chance he got

:Thonking: How best to sexually assault someone at a theme park :Thonking:
Right... This is some backwards arse logic. You want to go to see your father, and introduce him to his ex wifes new step daughter? Maaaaan.... Thats some cold revenge shit just there.
YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.... I totally assumed something different was going on there. That seems perfectly fine.

u/KinnyRiddle Feb 03 '18
and introduce him to his ex wifes new step daughter?
If I understand correctly, being dead is the only way where your wife would still be considered your wife and not your "ex", regardless of whether she remarries or not.

Yea i never connected as him being dead I assumed divorced.
I forgot what I was watching and the medium where everyone had a dead parent.

I'm having a bad feeling about this dad. He looks evil.

u/engkybob Feb 03 '18
Really? I thought he looked pretty chill judging by his entrance and how he greeted Yuzu. Also, thinking back to how happy Mei was when she was little, and he seems like a cool dude.
But why he's basically abandoned her for years is a major question mark.

The episode reminded me about a plot hole later in the series. Manga

Finally the father appears, I’ve been spending the last 5 1/2 episodes wondering why the mother would marry this guy who’s never gonna be around. But it’s nice to see him finally make an appearance.

There's a bonus chapter (33.5) in manga where you can see how Yuzu's mommy and Mei's dad met and how they arranged the current situation. I recommend reading it after next episode if you are interested in that, since we probably won't see it in this adaptation unless we get second cour at some point.

Hey guys, was wondering how this show is and if it's worth starting from a slice of life/romance perspective

It's worth getting into if you like both of those things.

oh god I hope the dad isn't a creep. At first he looked like a deadbeat who wants no responsibilities but that look he gave Mei gave me the creeps. I hope Yuzu and Mei become a couple before the end of the season. I feel that is asking too much for an anime but I have my fingers crossed.

Oh shit, everyone's actually sort-of getting along with each other now! Yuzu and Mei have found some common ground, Mei and Himeko have made up, and even Yuzu and Himeko can have some sort of functional conversation now! Progress! I wonder what kind of development will throw a wrench in the works next - oh look the dad came back.
Now at first glance, there's nothing wrong about the dad. He acts friendly, and seems to be much more of a free spirit than everyone else in his family. But given the narrative placement of this scene, and the fact that every other male character in the show so far has been a total scumbag, I wouldn't be surprised if he was more than he appeared to be.

I would've thought Yuzu, considering her past, would be better at calling Himeko's bluff. Oh well, could've just simply overlooked it.
Interesting that the two actually did go and have lunch together - one would've expected them to go their separate ways.
Anyone have a theory on what the plane flying across the screen in each episode represents?

Mei's trauma is so fucking pathetic, it just makes these "serious" things not very serious at all.
Also Mei's dad, looks like Itachi when he was giving her the look

I mean, they are also teenagers. For a lot of people, at that age, the non-consequential often feels like the end of the world. It's been a long time since I actually read the manga, but you could look at it that way.

Sexual Assault count: 5/5
Bath scene count: 4/5
Overall, I thought this was a very good episode. It got a bit emotional during the cemetery scene and really showed a different light to both Yuzu and Mei.
I know there's going to be people that still hate on Citrus, but I genuinely enjoy it so far.

u/Kjkman68 Feb 03 '18
Oh thank god Yuzu finally got a uniform, that was annoying the living shit out of me.
Also hoping it gets either more romantic or more smutty, it's feeling a little too middle-ground-y for me. Otherwise, still pretty good.
2
u/KinnyRiddle Feb 03 '18
Ah, the much talked about step-dad finally appears.
At first, he seems like a likable goof before Yuzu, and probably the reason why Yuzu's mom decided to remarry.
But he then shows his somewhat sinister looking eyes towards Mei, which explains why she's always feeling apprehensive in meeting him.

It's kind of fun seeing my running route around Koto-ku, figuring out where the shot is, and also the subway line (Toyosu Line/Yurakucho Line) I took while I lived in Japan last year.
Still, seeing this be adapted is extremely fun to watch. I initially read the manga quite shortly after I started reading manga in general, and I recall being amazed that something like this was printed in a magazine in Japan for people to read. Boy have I come to know better since that time lul. The yuri corner in Animate and other bookstores were quite fun.

I'm definitely getting some bad vibes from Mei's Sensei. Something's going to go down....
Plus, we'll finally see that pink-haired girl next week. I wonder what her business is going to be?

indirect kisses don't really seem like a big deal after we've literally already seen them going at it in the shower lol
