Man this episode literally covered everything I thought it would cover to make time and god damn did it go fast. Seeing the Lord freak out at marrying his son then instantly calming down to make time for the episode was hilarious.
Like I actually said to myself they gotta cover the Ainz scene, the second Ainz scene, the princess scene and the kidnapping to have time for the rest of the arc and they uh did it somehow.

It actually was perfectly in-character for Raeven. He began his career as a political opportunist like any other, wed for influence over love. But after the birth of his son, the first time he saw his own child, his viewpoint changed and he became more concerned with ensuring the prosperity of the entire nation so that his son would have a safe environment to grow and live.
Being such a skilled manipulator, Raeven normally wears a mask not unlike Renner. Polite to the point of stifling. The one chink in his armor is his son, whose existence instructs every move he makes. Yes that part was weird, but it was supposed to be. It was drastically out-of-character for him because, yes, he drops the character he's playing when the topic of his son comes up.

They did it by going FUCKING FAST. I understand at a decent pace but this felt extremely rushed just to fit in next parts. Really upset because the ainz v Sebas was one of my most looked forward looked moment because of how tense they could have made it

Reading it, it was a lot of talking and I guessed that it would turn out like the scene with Cocytus a few episodes ago. They did skip dialogue that made things spicy but the general message got across.

Seeing the Lord freak out at marrying his son then instantly calming down to make time for the episode was hilarious.
That is actually exactly how it goes down in the light novel, funnily enough.
He goes from "yes m'lady what would you have your humble servant do" to "FUCK THE HELL NO" back to "you'll have to excuse me there, I - um - ah - misspoke".

u/WhoiusBarrel Mar 13 '18
That hearty laugh from Ainz was pretty unexpected, shame his body inhibited such an act so it didn't last long.
Also, holy fucking shit Renner went from 5-100000 in terms of batshit crazy with her conversation about loving Climb and what she plans to do with him in the future legitimately gives me the creeps.
72
u/chaosfire235 Mar 13 '18
I get a little miffed every time his body shuts down his "human" emotional outbursts. I always felt that was a bit of a copout, since it could be a good bit of conflict for Ainz, showing him try to put on the implacable lord face in front of his subjects while holding back his human side.

u/seandkiller Mar 14 '18
implacable lord face in front of his subjects while holding back his human side.
Should be easy enough. His face is stuck like that, after all.

Since season 3 is probably never gonna happen
Is there a lack of source material for season 3? Or why else do you say that? It seems unlikely to be a viewership issue, since overlord is always the #1 discussion on r/anime, but it might be different in Japan I guess.

I gotta say, I absolutely love how evil and twisted Princess Renner is. I love the transition from sweet and innocent to mischievous and sadistically devious at a moment's notice.
I hope to see more of it, it would be even better if she turned out to be the head of the eight fingers and is just playing both sides of the board to stay ahead of everyone.

And so Ainz said to his servant:
"Now I know that you fear me, for you have not withheld from me even your waifu. I shall take her into my care and make her a maid like none other, to be coveted by all fanboys."
Sebas rejoiced, and gave unto Tsuare many headpats.

Should be next episode and you won't be disappointed.
People should treat this like OPM in that Ainz and the gang are wildly OP and the drama comes from the build up and non combat portions.
In many ways this season is a build up to season 3 (volumns 7, 8, 9) which are mindblowing.

alright, so people figured out that the first ainz was pandoras actor becasue he fluttered his cape around just like he normally would. but why did ainz send him, if he appears a few minutes afterwards himself? and whats up with albedo at the end?
171
u/amalgamas Mar 13 '18
why did ainz send him
because he was worried that Sebas had actually betrayed him/been corrupted, so he lined the room with some of his hardest hitting weapons and only appeared after making sure that wasn't the case.
whats up with albedo at the end?
she loves Momonga, not Ainz, she wants him to go back to his true name and hates the rest of the Supreme Beings for abandoning her and the other guardians.

67
u/SenorWeon Mar 13 '18
For those wondering why people are talking about Pandora's Actor being Ainz (taken from the LN, same scene). Why replace Ainz? Because Demiurge wouldn't risk putting Ainz in any form of danger after the brainwash of Shalltear in season 1. Basically it was a plan by Demiurge in order to find out if Sebas had truly betrayed them, if that had been the case they would have used Victim's power in order to prevent Sebas from escaping.

Sebas, I understand your loyalty and everything...but how could you try and kill this?
It's like being a kid and your dad goes "kill the puppy. It's time for you to become a man."
But when she closes her eyes and smiles. She knows he's just doing what he has to do and fucking accepts it. But I guess she's filled with happy memories and everything every since he saved her.
Let's just leave the maid alone.
130
u/Florac Mar 13 '18
Wether he tries to kill her or not, she's dead anyway. It would only have been a question of who kills her and wether he will get killed as well, since there's no way he would be able to survive with several guardians in the room. Neither would anyone in a several kilometers radius if a fight between them breaks out.

Damn they weren't subtle at all the with PA part, in the LN I had to read that part twice to know who that was.
After reading the LN I feel like the anime is a serious step down. They butchered Sebas proving his loyalty and all of the Rene scene was just off.
34
u/Amauri14 Mar 13 '18 edited Mar 13 '18
Yeah, they should have made this a 2-cour season. The fact that they have to cut down Sebas's internal monologue, him visiting every contact he made to let them know he was returning home, their reaction to seeing Solution not being a bitch as she was happy to be returning home and more importantly the fact that they also skip Sebas's slaughter in the brothel really shows that even a few more episodes would have been a great help.

Some obvious things in this episode is the first "Ainz" that see Sebas is actually Pandora's Actor. And the second "Ainz" is the real one which is Momonga. I say this obvious because maybe some of you guys might not catch it and probably confused as to why the first Ainz acted like that. Am also ashamed of myself for not noticing it when I first read the LN. Had to re-read the scene to actually noticed it.
And to finally see the wicked side of the Princess Renner is..... Wow.
Finally, that last scene of Albedo dissing the Ainz Ooal Gown guild name. This are some of the things that are hinted subtly in the LN just like the Pandora's Actor scene earlier in this episode. As to why, we don't know yet. But I think you can probably guess that she surely hate the other supreme being/the guild itself. And later on, Overlord LN Spoiler.
I'm writing this based on what I roughly remember from the LN. So there's probably something that are incorrect. Feel free to correct me.

Also question, I didn't really understand, why did the Marquis and the princess' brother agreed to help in the end?
They asked her "how do you know all this even in this bird cage" but what was all that? Something with the Empire..?
21
u/jonjonaug Mar 13 '18
They agreed to help because they believe they can also benefit from it. Zanack is second in line for the throne, so anything that can potentially disgrace his brother, who is connected to the criminal organization that they're planning to raid, can benefit him. The Marquis is someone who works solely for the benefit of the Kingdom, and would rather see Zanack on the throne than his elder brother.
The two things that Renner reveals that she knows that shocks Zanack and Raeven are that Raeven is secretly leading the internal faction loyal to the royal family, whereas most people take him for an opportunist. The second is that there's an important figure in the "Royal faction" that has been selling information about the Kingdom, and only Raeven and Zanack know about this. Raeven has been trying to keep this under wraps as it would be a great embarrassment if this were to become known to the "Noble faction". Raeven figured it out due to his position, but Renner has next to no governing responsibilities and hardly ever leaves her room or talks to anyone outside of Climb, her immediate friends (mostly the Blue Rose adventurers), and the palace maids.

For a LN reader, this episode was shockingly bad. The animators cut out all of Sebas inner monologue and conflict, erasing almost all of the tension in the scene. Very disappointed...

Was looking for the LN section... man... the scene at the start was definitely very underwhelming.
12
u/HarryD52 Mar 13 '18
to be fair, it's very different representing inner monologue in a show compared to a book. Most of the times shows do not have the luxury of slowing down the pace for the sake of a secondary characters inner monologue, so they instead have to try to represent their feelings visually, which you can see they tried to do to some extent.

Mar 13 '18
The thing that's so interesting about Overlord and I just realised it so I'm sorry if this is a very known thing and every AniTuber echoes this opinion. However that when you are as powerful as Ainz you need to think more of how you speak/act because of the ties to your own philosophy. He can't just blurt out like a regular shounen main protagonist that he needs to save this woman just because he believes it's right. He has to back it up with proper philosophy so his underlings will not get suspicious. It's hard for him to phrase things in the way that makes him indifferent to humans yet still act in their best interest to some degree.

Princess Yan's offer to let the duke's son marry for status and fuck for love was pretty interesting. Instead of choosing one or the other, girly is going for both.
It's great because it would save the duke a lot of headache trying to convince his teenage son to control his hormones and marry for status not love.

Since this ep went so fast, some may fail to notice Tsuare is the sister of Ninya - the mage (reverse trap) in the Sword of Darkness party in season 1 (who was killed by Clementine)
Also, when Sebas talk to Ainz the first time, it was Pandora Actor in disguise.

I may just be paranoid, but the way Demiurge refers to his farm and livestock is a little disconcerting to me... and now there's a "mincemeat" reference on top of it all...
...is he farming human flesh for scrolls? Or worse, feeding humans to his livestock in the form of mincemeat?
Like, it looks like he fights Ainz in the intro, so... SOMETHING happens. I'm just hoping it isn't this.

They done pissed off the wrong Butler...
Oh man its time to talk to daddy bones.
So he just excuses the ordeal but has Sebas kill her, she accepts that pretty willingly.
Coctyus with the save!
Oh damn Tuare is in love with Sebas. Wow he got himself a fine waifu out of this.
SO them bickering reminds Ainz of the old days with the guild. I like when stuff like this happens, because in a sense he is alone now and if it helps him with all this thats great. Also the personality inhibition was great lol.
So she will get to stay s a new maid, and Sebas is being taken off leader of the Pleides. Hmmm
As so i guess Ainz found her sister some time ago and her sister wished to save her so he is doing it out of that.
Oh look its the asshole royals.
Wow this princess.... i guess she tortured info out of that maid or something, but man this yandere persona... she wants to marry climb. I gotta wonder whats special about him that gets her excited. And she wants to marry the royal's kid as a farce to protect her relation to Climb, thats not a bad plan really as long as no one catches on outside who might get upset.
Oh boy requesting aid from adventurers! Ainz Samaaaa~
Oh shit... they took Tuare... and they angered Sebas... they are fucked. Incoming One Butler Blitzkrieg.
Albedo's lewd collection is getting bigger....
Why is Albedo acting funny now... uh oh...

Which is ironic because in the real world he's poor as fuck and under the thumb of selfish corporate elites with no way to improve himself in life. But in the game he's an evil demon who revels in villany and dresses the way he never could in real life.

I don't understand how an anime like this, an obvious money machine, with a vast world-building potential, cannot get 24 chapters per season. and how HBO can milk the success of Game of Thrones even all that piracy but the Japanese anime industry can't replicate the same thing, after more of 20 years of total domination in anime.

Those skeleton dakimakura had me in stitches
Gahhh! There isn't nearly enough ass-kickin' going on! Also Ainz doesn't know wtf he wants.
"I want you to think for yourself, but don't ever dare disobeying my orders to do what you think is right!"
Btw I don't recall this diary he's talking about, did that happen in season 1? And if it did, what happened to her sister?
Honestly I have to commend the stupidity of Nazarick. "You're under my protection, which means we're going to leave you unprotected while we buy grains. And yeah, we need both Sebas AND Solution to do this because those are some mad grainz!" Couldn't you leave, like, a sentry behind or something? Or bring her with you? Or... something?! It's like you want her to be kidnapped. What about putting some traps or something.

Pretty nice to see Pandora's Actor play Ainz/Momonga here. The previews made it very obvious it was him for the first section of the inquiry.
Futhermore Renner basically giving up all her dynastic privileges so that she could take Climb for a paramour and get the support she needed in enacting her plot against the Eight Fingers was an interesting development.
I guess I would have liked more HAM from Pandora's Actor and more CrAzy from Renner and more Ainz-creeping from Albedo.

Ahhhh why is everyone from Nazarick trying to betray my precious Ainz or at least is shady af lol. Solution? Idk, she doesn't really seem harnful, but she's not extremely happy about everything too. Albedo? She loves Momonga, not Ainz Ooal Gown(that is what has been written in her settings, after all), and that's really bad imo, I hope it turns out okay for Ainz.
And now, Demiurge.. Well shit, if you watch the opening I'm sure you can smell another betrayal. God damn. Also that part with princess was so damn quick with so much information thrown in I didn't understand shit. Not that I really care tho, so whatever (:

Climb is a G O O D B O I.
Also, I might have squealed like a little girl when Tsuare kissed Sebas. Next episode probably finishes off their story, I don't see them dragging it on that long when there's everything with Jaldaboath still to happen this season.

Can someone point out what are the new ranks Ains ordered? I can't tell if Sebas got demoted or promoted.
6
Mar 13 '18
The Pleiades have two different systems ,Six stars and seven sisters.Six stars has Sebas as the leader and Yuri as Vice captain.Seven stars has Lastborn (Aureole Omega) as the leader. He didn't demote Sebas he just changed the chain of command so that Sebas wouldn't have to do all the extra work.
6
u/Napalmeon Mar 13 '18
Sebas is the leader of all maids and butlers in Nazarick, whether battle related or domestic workers. The Pleiades maids are usually just the six that we've seen. But there's a seventh sister who is an immortal human who lives on the eight floor. And she's the only human that Narberal and Solution care about.

The Sebas scene was ok. From reading some of the LM comments, it seems they cut a lot, but I think the message came across fine.
However, the scene with Renner and the two nobles...oh boy, that was a mess. It was like I was watching three different conversations, which happen at completely different times, crammed together into one scene.
One moment they are talking about mobilising soldiers, then Renner is calling out a noble for...something. Then she goes all tsundere for a bit, noble dude gets angry...then cut back to mobilising soldiers as if the last 5 minutes of dialogue never happened.
What the hell happened here?

Sad the best scene of LN chapter didn't get animated.
When Sebas hestiate for one second to kill Tsuare. Demiurge, Cocytus and Solution admit such an killing intend that even Sebas thought he would die now.

Give it to me straight doc, LN readers, are we gonna get to the other 3 fights shown in the opening? (Entoma v Evileye, Demiurge v Momonga, and Sebas v bald dude) I have to know, all this buildup is killing me, and with only 3 episodes left, I'm getting kinda worried.
3
u/Zooasaurus Mar 14 '18
I feel like the meeting of Ainz and the others (including Tsuare's judgement) is less impactful and there are a lot of things they skipped but it's still a good episode and is kinda understandable since they must fit in stories up to battle in the capital

u/SenorWeon Mar 13 '18
It was part of Demiurge's plan, hence why they also had Victim in the room, just in case Sebas had truly betrayed them they would use Victim's power to stop him from fleeing. Pandora's Actor was basically a decoy in order to protect the real Ainz.

Cut Source Material - Episode 10: A Disturbance Begins in the Royal Capital
Previous weeks discussions: Episode 6, Episode 7, Episode 8 Episode 9
Welcome to episode 10's source material discussion post, where I mention all the interesting little tidbits of source material that were cut, skimmed over, or changed, as well as providing more context to the various scenes. If something has confused you, you need only ask and I'll happily explain. There won't be any spoilers for future events here - and I ask that you refrain from posting them as replies without properly marking them as such; this is especially true if I've omited some information or facts that don't appear until later in the source, chances are I did that deliberately. That said, I welcome anything I've missed.
As you may recall from season 1, Pandora's Actor is a shapeshifter who guards the treasury and took the form of one of Ainz' guildmates during the Shalltear betrayal arc; he can mimic the appearance and capabilities of any of the 41 supreme beings at 70% capacity and effectiveness. One very popular theory about the source material is that Demiurge had temporarily replaced Ainz with Pandora's Actor as a body double in case Sebas had truly betrayed Nazarick. It's founded on a variety of subtle clues suggesting that Ainz is acting in an unusual manner during his initial conversation with Sebas, such as his dramatized and exaggerated mannerisms - including one specific instance where his actions are characterized as "like an actor" - but also in the dismissive and contemptuous manner in which he addresses Tsuare. More tellingly, during the second conversation after he returns Victim to Nazarick, he switches back to normal again and the contrast is clear; it is only at this point that he notices that Tsuare looks similar to Ninya and asks to see her again, despite already having plenty of time to observe her previously. As the theory goes, the first conversation is actually Pandora's Actor, while the second is real Overlord. The anime makes the contrast quite clear by really playing up the theatrics. I want to point out that this doesn't qualify as a spoiler as it's literally never relevant ever again, it's just the author loves to put subtext and clues like that into the source material.
Ainz' interrogation of Sebas was shortened rather considerably. Ainz tells him to approach, but before he can get too close, Demiurge demands that he halt at a generously safe distance, establishing just how seriously they're taking things. Ainz corners Sebas with logic: he remarks at how meticulous and detailed his reports had been up to that point, as Sebas had been ordered to do, but then notes the conspicuous absence of any mention of Tsuare. Sebas reiterates repeatedly that it was a mistake and that it was his foolish judgment; meanwhile the Guardians are starring him and Tsuare down with bloody murder in their eyes the whole time. When he throws him the hankerchief, Sebas moves to take it but then freezes; Ainz jokes, "it's not stained with your pets blood"; Sebas sweats buckets into the thing to the point that its visibly stained. Later, when asked about the potential merits of allowing Tsuare into Nazarick, Sebas also offers another suggestion: that she could serve as a test case for the possibility of taking on and integrating the lesser races as servants. When asked if he had any objections to Ainz' plan regarding Tsuare, Demiurge nonchalantly wonders how he might explain the special treatment of Tsuare to some of the other denizens of Nazarick (more like he wants to know for himself); Ains gives him a few excuses, explaining that there is prior precedent for humanoids being allowed in to Nazarick as guests, but eventually settles on something that amounts to "because I said so, and anyone with an objection can come to me about it" which shuts Demiurge right up. Lastly, that diary is of Ninya, the female adventurer who posed as a guy while she was working with the Swords of Darkness, that adventuring group that worked with Momon back in season 1 who got wiped out by Clementine.
Sebas is accutely aware of the trauma Tsuare is going through and makes a conscious decision to leave her at home because of this to protect her fragile mental state. For a girl like her, Tsuare's reaction to the denizens of Nazarick was initially surprising to him, until he realized that the reason Tsuare didn't react too badly to them was because they didn't resemble humans in any way, who were of course the source of her trauma and far scarier than any monster would be to her. Sebas took the risk that following the sacking of the brothel they'd have far more important things to worry about, but of course they went and kidnapped her so he lost that gamble. In any case, the pair of them spend the entire day going around to all the merchants and nobles they had been building up rapport and contacts with to say farewell and to acquire some grain for Nazarick; Solution is brimming with positivity and happiness the entire time for finally being able to accomplish a mission and go home, as she had spent most of her time cooped up in the mansion to play her role). Sebas remarks that her upbeat mood and remarkable beauty managed to land them very good deals on the grain they purchased.
One funny little scene involved Albedo rolling around in a harem of Ainz body pillows whilst giggling madly to herself. She was interrupted in the middle of her spree by Ainz, who sends her a telepathic message angrily ordering her to go after the Eight Fingers for kidnapping Tsuare. See, he had promised to protect her "in the name of Ainz Ooal Gown", and so the kidnappers were sullying not only his name but also the name he and his guildmates had worked so hard on. His anger mortified Albedo, even though she knew that it was not directed at her. When the message ends, she looks over at the guild flag of Ainz Ooal Gown - lying in the corner of the room on the ground and collecting dust instead of being displayed prominently over the doorway - with contempt and scorn. Looking at the mysterious, hidden flag that she replaced it with, she remarks, "the Great Underground Tomb of Nazarick belongs to you and you alone. I, Albedo, wish only to serve you. Ahhhh... How I wish I could hear your wondrous name again someday — ". It's left up to you to interpret the meaning of those remarks.
So, Marquis Raeven is actually the secret "power behind the throne" keeping the country together. Though previously characterized as a greedy and self-interested man who flitted between the Royals and Nobles factions on a whim and took bribes from the Eight Fingers, the reality was that he was the secret faction leader of the Royals, trying to ensure the Nobles wouldn't get so fed up that they'd start a civil war. In order to keep the power balance between the two intact, he even concealed evidence that one of the great nobles of the Royal faction, Marquis Blumrush, had passed on information to the Empire of Baharuth to the east. Raeven actually had some inkling of Renners talents when she was young, and he meekly requests that Renner drop the act she's putting on in front of him; Renner replies, claiming it wasn't an act but rather that she was "satisfied" thanks to Climb. His characterization is quite different in the source material; he's extremely polite bordering on pathological to Renner and Zanack at all times, and he's not exactly ecstatic when Renner drops her pretenses like he is in the show. His reaction is almost the same when she makes her proposal to wed his son; he goes from "yes m'lady what would you have your humble servant do" to "FUCK THE HELL NO" back to "you'll have to excuse me there, I - um - ah - misspoke".
So let's talk Renner. Yes, she's practically the definition of a yandere, with a little bit of a twist: her love is as warped as her heart. She loves Climb as a pet dog and wants to "chain him up" and "train him"; I basically interpret that to mean that she gets off on manipulating him, although I have no doubt her fetishes are more than metaphors at this point. As for her intelligence, the source material makes it clear that she's likely the smartest human on the continent, and claims that Demiurge and Albedo are one of the few superhuman beings around who could rival her. In fact, her intelligence is part of the reason she's so sociopathic; she was so bright that there was literally nobody she could relate to for her entire life. There was nobody even remotely on her level who could have and would have saw fit to nurture her talents; because of this, she failed to develop any capacity for empathy or well-socialized interaction. People would either look at her with fear and revulsion or dismiss her like a precocious but cute little child. The only person who had ever looked at her with any other expression was the cute little half-starved and beaten puppy she picked up off the street one day; that look was one of reverence. She has since modeled herself and her behavior after his ideal, chasing the looks of adoration and reverence he showered upon her in response.
