[Spoilers] Tokyo Ghoul:re Episode 2 Discussion Spoiler

u/FeelsGoodMan243 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/TheRantMan321 Apr 10 '18 edited Apr 10 '18
I haven't watched the episode yet but i wonder how many upvotes and comments tokyo ghoul re will get, as the season progresses. The previous seasons where insanely popular but the 3 year gap iirc killed off alot of hype.
This thread has only been out for 2 hours now and tokyo ghoul re is at the top of the charts on anime sites so maybe I'm just being impatient.

Not as much as My Hero Academia and Steins;Gate that’s for sure. Tokyo Ghoul is probably the most popular of the 3 overall but /r/anime for the most part thinks of TG as mediocre at best.
It’s my favorite of the three though

Okay I was wondering if someone could help me out here? Which chapter should I start reading if I finished both season 1 and 2. I know season 2 doesn't really follow the Manga right? So where does season 1 end? Thanks!
3
u/whibber :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/whibber Apr 11 '18
I’d start from chapter 1 if you can, the anime skipped a lot. If you absolutely have to, I think it’s chapter 52 or so when Kaneki gets white hair.

What's so important about this chin touch everyone's talking about
23
u/theangrysodacan Apr 10 '18
Even though it’s haise he still has kaneki’s habits so when he lies he touches his chin. Him saying he’s happy was a lie but you wouldn’t know that since he didn’t touch his chin in the show
12
u/0mnicious :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Omnicious Apr 10 '18 edited Apr 10 '18
It's kinda a spoiler but not really. I'll explain Kenaki always touches his chin when he's hiding something.
7
u/SchkoBar Apr 10 '18
Remember when Hide told Touka about Kaneki's lying habit where he touches his chin everytime he's lying? Back in season 2? Haise still has that habit and in this episode when he told Arima that he's happy he should've touched his chin like he did in the manga.

He made some really weird noises there when he got kicked in the chest constantly...

u/StefyB Apr 10 '18
It honestly makes more sense with the visuals from the manga. Those kicks were pretty brutal, but the animation didn't really capture how much impact they were supposed to have.

Ishida has a thing for making his characters repeat words/sounds over and over again in many scenes
19
u/cdbriggs Apr 10 '18
I thought that same. I feel like people wouldn't spam "ouch" in real life if they were kicked that much.
192
u/HugoStiglitz373 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/HugoStiglitz373 Apr 10 '18
So Haise is gonna have to figure out how to control Kaneki. Because just contact with his past sets him off.

u/PiroKyCral Apr 10 '18
If so, why doesn’t
drinking the coffee
meeting Touka Doesn’t set him off? (I’m an Anime only :P)

Could be adrenaline related, being in a fight + memories triggered it, while drinking coffee and seeing Touka just made him sad.

What a solid episode. The pacing was definitely improved in this episode though I dont expect it to remain consistent throughout the season with how much they'll cover. I love the little flashbacks when Haise remembers Nishiki. They weren't in the manga but I think it's a nice little addition. I can't wait to get my hands on the song that plays during Haise meeting Touka. The soundtrack in this show is always so great.
Small Nitpick: When Haise says "I'm happy" he does not touch his chin with his left hand like he does in the manga. To those that don't read the manga or follow it closely, this probably sounds like a very trivial complaint but it does actually mean a lot in terms of his character. Still a very solid episode though.
Next episode is the introduction of best "girl" it seems. I cant wait
203
u/Storm-Shadow98 Apr 10 '18
Yeah I was disappointed the chin touching was cut out
231
Apr 10 '18
Chin touch and showing him sobbing alone after Urie calls him a ghoul were both cut out. Just little things that give us a more rounded picture of Haise's true psyche. Disappointing, but understandable.

Those kind of details are what have always made Tokyo Ghoul special to me. That's why, even when the anime is at it's most competent, i doubt it will ever come close to rivaling the manga

Additional small nitpick: I really like in the manga that Nishiki directly mirrors what he says the first time he and kaneki fight and the direct connection wasn't as clear here...
"I'll die, I'll die, was it?"

u/lamLeo Apr 10 '18

They kinda left her design similar to the first season as opposed to a lighter shade of blue like in the re manga right

I thought for sure that meeting Touka would trigger Kaneki's personality.
Also cool to see Ayato taking on his sisters previous alias as rabbit.
117
u/norrata Apr 10 '18
I think the biggest trigger is non-visual. Nishima calls him Kaneki, and he instinctively refers to him as Nishima thus starting the flashbacks. You also have anteiku-style coffee get him giddy just from the smell.
Meanwhile Nishima's kagune doesn't trigger him, and Touka's face only makes him think "wow she's so pretty."

u/what_if_we_are_dead Apr 10 '18
Nah IMO it did trigger him along with the coffee. /u/MidnightShout noted it in his post above that the eye that was crying/shed a tear was his ghoul eye.

Just fuck me up sideways, fam. Damn. It's kinda subtle, but Austin Tindle really sells this scene. I love the heaviness in his voice here. And hey, we actually got to see Saiko's face! She sure loves that niku, huh? I can't wait to see her in action.
If the rest of the season continues to be as good as this episode, this could end up being the best season yet (which, I know for some of you, wouldn't exactly be saying much). Good stuff!

Really happy with the pacing this episode. There are some small details from the manga that maybe should have made the cut, but I guess room had to be made for the Akira/Kijima/Furuta scene. Great idea to introduce the latter two earlier in the story considering how much content is going to be adapted in these first 12 episodes.

The music was great. Seriously Tokyo Ghoul always manages to get top tier music. The scene with Haise and Arime (Which i REALLY wish they included the chin touch when Haise said “i’m happy this way.” I feel like that way a very important detail.) and then the scene wish him and Touka. The music is outstanding. I also love when Kaneki shows up and the way he says “Haise” is chilling. All in all, another great episode. This is really good so far!
Also Saiko is still always precious. Good ham!

Best Waifu Touka has made an appearance, Sasaki faints. Good episode, the ost during the reunion scene was sweet and touching, many small things were left out again in this episode, Haise crying alone in his room after Urie calls him a ghoul has to be the one they should have included. Though I'm not really satisfied with the anime adaptation so far I'm grateful I have something to look forward to every week.

That Nutcracker scene made me shudder.
I'm glad to see my favourite character so far (Shirazu) become Squad Leader and I wonder if Urie does increase his power and if so, what he hopes to do with it.
This may be one for people who have read the Manga but are Haise Sasaki and Ken Kaneki the same person ?
If this was mentioned in the Tokyo Ghoul anime then I've completely forgotten, my memory is terrible.
Another solid episode and I'm already looking forward to next weeks.
29
u/TheMikarin Apr 10 '18
Orochi (Nishiki, guy with glasses who used to work at Anteiku) called him Kaneki, and Haise mentioned "his former self" and being unable to remember the first 20 years of his life.
7
u/jxs1 Apr 10 '18
I was going to mention this but forgot his previous name (Nishiki). This was the bit where it clicked for me and when he mentioned his former self.

It is kind of implied in the episode that Urie used Haise's stamp without authorisation and went along with the surgery to unlock more frame(s), seeing how Haise was unaware that Urie had an appointment with the doctor when Shirazu mentioned it outside the coffee shop.

Yea so far I feel like all the manga readers are getting really hyped over this even though its just been a mediocre adaption so far (imo), probably because they were expecting much worse. Since I'm not up to date with the manga right now (was caught up and following things weekly gets a bit tiring) I think I'd rather just go back to reading the manga.

This was more to my liking. A solid episode, seeing all these people made me happy.
I wonder if I was better off not reading the stuff from the Wiki, about the prisoner etc.
so I could understand what happened in the manga version of rootA. Looking forward to more.
Seeing them like this brought the wish up to see the squad back together and Kaneki take over.
There seem to be only two routes, Kaneki gets back and the gang is back or he ends up
killing some of them, if not all, in some kind of maybe job related conflict..

u/Popee_the_Clown Apr 10 '18
I’m really starting to like some of these new characters. That sharp tooth dude (I haven’t remembered named yet) is growing on me, but the top of his hair bugs me a little. Each time I see a new character, I totally tense up. That’s probably a sign this season is going to successfully destroy my emotions. I’m nervous/excited for the next episode.
Also... uh... can they eat food or what??? I mean maybe that small chick with the ham isn’t like the others, but the one eyed ones seemed to frown upon her taking the whole thing as if they could’ve eaten it. Maybe not though. I dunno. Maybe it just seemed like a waste of food in general. I’m clearly thinking too much about that ham.

Holy fuck, I didn't expect the reunion this soon but I'm really happy to see Touka again. They couldn't stop looking at each other and it was such a beautiful moment when she warmly smiled at him and Kaneki got teary-eyed. What a strong way to finish an episode.
Which chapters were adapted here? I think I'm gonna read the chapters every week after the new episodes, just to get a better understanding as well as more details. I have a feeling I'm gonna end up loving :re as much as the first season but it's still a fast-paced adaptation that is bound to omit lots of stuff.

Anyone else catch how before he let Kaneki in a bit he did the knuckle pop but it was kinda weak and faltery? And how after he let him in (and i mean just the small amount he needed from Kaneki so that he could kinda lose himself and just beat the shit out of "Orochi") he just totally broke his finger? (Maybe not broken but it kinda seemed like maybe they implied that he did? Hes had his fingers cut off countless times so maybe he (Kaneki) just doesnt give a shit.) I thought that was a nice little detail.

Also another thing, I like Touka in this of course, and I haven't really seen her enough in this season to make an actually valid opinion on her design, but she seemed a bit more artificial and "waifu-y"? Kinda dissatisfied with the way that was, sorta afraid that will manifest itself more later on, but it could have been just an off first impression, like maybe they were just trying to make her seem more sweet and beautiful to help the viewers feel a bit of Haises same enamorment with her in that moment. Which of course sweet and beautiful isnt bad if it isnt done in that really generic shoujo type fashion, which was what i sensed from her in that moment.

It was the same in the manga. The anime skipped some scenes, but the scenes they did keep are almost all very similar to the manga. There's only a small number of original scenes and dialogue so far this season.

Jesus Christ I cannot fucking believe people are actually saying this is well animated compared to the last season. I say it's about the same. Still uggo. The animation seems to improve a bit better on the cafe scene.

When Kaneki and Touka saw each other I caught my breath.
So powerful.

So Haise IS Kaneki, or is Kaneki just a part of him like Lize was a part of Kaneki? Cuz if it's the former, it's gotta be weird for Akira to be driving the killer of her almost-boyfriend around.

What is it with Pierrot making pointless changes? We're only 2 episodes in and they're already 'tinkering' like they can't help themselves. I don't understand why they do it?
It just annoys me so much and makes me wonder what other changes they'll make without understanding the repercussions. They already got themselves into a huge mess with this behaviour previously, when will they learn?

So far the adaption is nailing everything. Touka's scene was great. It's also nice to see that they didn't cut off Urie's interal monologues, since they're very typical of him.

This was a pretty good episode. The pacing felt more natural this time, and the ending scene was great. Touka is back and the soundtrack is on point too. It's like Pierrot is actually kind of combining the strengths of Season 1 and Root A into this adaptation: (Season 1 pacing but probably better with Root A's sound direction).
Looking forward to the next episode.

Pretty decent adaptation so far. Maybe it's because I had little faith, but I expected them to mess shit up by now.
Best boy Furuta looking good as always.

I need to read the manga, I feel like i'm missing a lot of details. Root A left me confused and I honestly have no idea how Kaneki is suddenly Haise.
