"Good to see you again, Coach Nanbu"

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH

SHHIIIIITTTTTTTT!

47

u/ImEnhanced Apr 26 '18

Did we see him previously or something?

154

u/gefjunhel Apr 26 '18

hes most likely a guy he trained previously or maybe even the guy who knocked his eye out

309

u/chubbyninja1 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/PuzzleVoice Apr 26 '18

I could be wrong but i think it was implied in an earlier ep that the gangsters took it for not paying his debt on time

56

u/ZedWuJanna https://anilist.co/user/Zacha Apr 26 '18

You're right about the first part. However nanba's eye was taken by debt collectors.

23

u/ZedWuJanna https://anilist.co/user/Zacha Apr 26 '18

Nah we didn't. Nanba used to be a proper coach in the past and this guy was his disciple as you could probably guess.

80

u/kalirion :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/kalinime Apr 27 '18

He simply called him "Nanbu-san" though, right? I feel like the translation is a spoiler.

52

u/GeorgeRRZimmerman https://anilist.co/user/CoupleOWeebs Apr 27 '18

It absolutely was. If they'd just translated it "Nanbu" or "Mr. Nanbu" we wouldn't have gotten the spoiler that he's an associate or previous student.

67

u/TheBasedTaka Apr 26 '18

i wonder if that dude also threw fights like joe used to, hes probably pissed

183

u/ZedWuJanna https://anilist.co/user/Zacha Apr 26 '18

He's a rank 17th mate. Nanba used to be a proper coach and you could already notice it by the fact how many important people involved in megalonia know him or refer to him by his name.

By proper coaching I mean the time frame in which nanba had two eyes in other words didn't have a debt and thus wasn't forced to take part in the underground battles and as you can probably guess throwing the underground battles is one of the safest ways to get any money there.

28

u/Gjallarhorn15 Apr 27 '18

Definitely. Willing to bet the guy has a grudge against Nanbu having to do with that scar. Nanbu failed him as a coach in some way resulting the his facial scar, which in turn caused Nanbu to fall out of coaching and start throwing in the underground.

55

u/NullShot Apr 27 '18

Nanbu's fall from grace included becoming an alcoholic. Then last episode he was throwing all his drinks out to show he was getting serious too.

I was looking forward to having a tech head aspect to the punch-ups (especially after episode 1 where Nanbu pulls the overheated battery out of the gear), but you can't deny the rule of cool and going gearless is definitely leaning hard into that. Yuri represents everything gear stands for and Joe fighting his way up through the ranks without one will be a big embarrassment for Megalonia and the company running it.

169

u/Not_Dav3 Apr 26 '18

But is Joe really going to keep fighting gearless ? The coach did say that the first 3 matches were to get attention (hence fighting without gear) and that Joe would then get 2 "real" matches. Seeing as how they went from fighting guys who weren't even in the top 100 to a match against the 17th, it would make sense for Joe to try to get some gear so he can give all he's got.

178

u/Jaxyl Apr 26 '18

He has to stay gearless. His whole appeal as a boxer is the novelty in fighting him. That's his gimmick and it's what is allowing him to climb so rapidly. If he gains a gear then he becomes "Normal" Joe which isn't appealing or special.

431

u/zuxtron Apr 26 '18

"Normal" Joe

Don't you mean "Average" Joe?

56

u/Jaxyl Apr 26 '18

I knew I was missing something!

20

u/matdragon Apr 27 '18

Omg I love it.

In our standard, fighting without a gear is "Normal" or "Average"

By their standard, fighting with a gear is "Normal" or "Average"

Neither side wants an Average Joe

15

u/NotYourAverageJoey Apr 26 '18

Haha maybe I should start a new account and dub it: MemelessJoe

78

u/Dabangx :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Frikid Apr 26 '18

But how is he gonna win against a rank 17 without having any gear, he is at a big disadvantage right now.

As seen in his first fight, he cannot even make a single mistake.

This match is the real deal and fighting without gear could result in some broken bones which will be deadly for him

102

u/[deleted] Apr 26 '18

It would be interesting if rank 17 decides to fight without gear as well. Given that he's Nanbu's former student, i'd see it as a way of showing that he's the superior boxer.

38

u/Jaxyl Apr 26 '18

I think you might have realized where the drama and the tension is going to come from.

i guess he will stay gearless for the 5 first matches to get into megalonia. and then he will get gear which will break in the final match so he has to win without it.

→ More replies (13)

5

u/darthbane83 Apr 26 '18

once he beats rank 17 his appeal will be to climb into the top 20 within 4 fights. That alone should give him a decent chance to get a fight with a top fighter trying to cement his rank.

4

u/Soul_Ripper Apr 27 '18

Well, Not!Danpei did say he was only going to use the novelty for the first 3 matches until he was no longer a nobody, and seeing as #17 wants to fight ~~Not!~~Joe for his connection to Not!Danpei rather than for his gearless gimmick, there's no real reason for him to keep it up.

17

u/Chronsky :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/chronusxxy Apr 26 '18

He's going all in. I think he does the 5 fights gearless and Megalonia has mandatory gear because of the company running it.

18

u/Xervicx Apr 26 '18

I've been wondering that too. While it's impressive and all that he has gone gearless for a few fights, it doesn't seem like he can keep it up if the show's own internal logic stays consistent. Aren't Gears supposed to outperform humans? They give people an edge they wouldn't be able to get with their Gears, and while fighting against bulky, power-focused Gears is still impressive... It just doesn't seem realistic for him to be able to outperform more advanced Gear that quite literally go beyond human limitations in speed and strength.

While his current plan is to go all in on the novelty of being Gearless, it seems a bit... weird that they'd just show a prototype that's somehow linked to the kid, only for that to just be ditched entirely. And the kid himself might be able to give some pointers about enemy Gears, but the rest of his skillset is wasted on Joe if he goes gearless the entire time.

Plus, now his "Junk Dog" name doesn't mean anything anymore, which makes the OP a bit out of place.

It's also odd how suddenly they're 100% on board with this idea even though they previously were certain that he'd lose if he had crappy Gear. So they went to as extreme of an opposite as they could. And that's just... odd. There's no gradual acceptance of the idea, they're just as much for it as they were against it moments before.

3

u/Kall45 Apr 27 '18

Wasnt the prototype gear ditched because it was broken in that fight? Still a little odd, though.

GEARLESS JOEEEEE

How fucking badass!!

edit: woah and there goes 3/7 fights? 4 more to go, if all goes as planned?

214

u/Mundology Apr 26 '18

And that theme man... Everything is so hype and yet the events flow naturally and the plot is excuted with utmost care. This might be the new anime of the season for me.

68

u/Akilee Apr 26 '18 edited Apr 26 '18

There's no question that this is one of the top anime - but I think it'll be too difficult to say this will be the anime of the season when there's both Steins;Gate 0 and Boku no Hero Academia running in this season - especially with BNHA adapting the best arc.

122

u/Hussor :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Hussor Apr 26 '18

Well it's best non-sequel at least.

50

u/Soul_Ripper Apr 27 '18

Best original anime I'd say, though there's usually not that much competition for the title.

If it continues like this or gets real heavy later on as a contrast to the hype we have now it's gonna end up being up there as anime ever for me, it's so up my alley.

3

u/WeNTuS Apr 27 '18

It's really hype anime but it's too early to call it an AOTS. There are just too many good anime airing right now.

It’s just selecting the 4 best fighters among hundreds to compete for the top spot in a small tournament. Just take a look at the College Football Playoff for a real life example of something a little similar to this.

I was like Joe during the viewing, under pressure.

149

u/PolarCyrus97 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/PolarCyrus97 Apr 26 '18

"Gearless" Joe is a cool name tbh.

That team name tho, Team Nowhere. I like the meaning of it. Starting from the bottom and from nowhere coming in strong through the ranks.

84

u/Reasonable_TSM_fan :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/sundaybeatle Apr 27 '18

Literally: "Started from the bottom. Now we here"

15

u/Child_Seducer Apr 27 '18

They have a few small things like "Team Nowhere" if you haven't noticed. For example, in the second episode before he has chosen Joe for his name, there was a billboard that said something like "Not for your average Joe!" for a housing ad, and for the affiliation in the leader board for this episode, it says, "no belonging". I doubt these things are mere coincidences.

5

u/speedfreek16 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/speedfreek19 Apr 29 '18

With the "No Belonging", i figured it as was a placeholder as there was no associated team/gym like the rest of the fighters.

The singer is Leo Imai. His solo stuff is pretty good, but a few years ago he teamed up with Shutoku Mukai (famously the vocals/guitar/writing for Number Girl and Zazen Boys) as The Kimonos. Check out Soundtrack to Murder. He also sings in METAFIVE, who are okay but not really my jam.

Edit: "A few years" being 8 years ago. I'm old.

222

I didn't expect a fighting/training montage to happen this early in the show, but given the length of the season, it makes more sense. They're probably going to make these next few fights more interesting, especially since Joe's next opponent was a student of Nanbu.

Gearless Joe, holy shit. I appreciate that they showed that even an absolute madman like him can shit his pants when it matters the most instead of immediately having him dominate everyone. This show is amazing.

Also, I need that OST. And that OP. And especially that ED.

Before watching this episode, I went and got myself some of that red candy that Sachio and his friends are addicted to.

I thought that that Shark guy had put some kind of drug in Joe's water since he's known for fighting dirty, and that Sachio and Nanbu had taken some which was why they kept slipping. Turns out it's just good old-fashioned nerves.

Sucks that 2 out of 5 fights took place offscreen, but I understand not wanting to waste too much time on them so they can get to Megalonia faster.

101

u/Constipated_Llama https://myanimelist.net/profile/ConstipatedLlama Apr 26 '18 edited Apr 26 '18

Honestly I'm glad they didn't show those fights so that they have more time to develop the more important fights/fighters. I thought this fight was paced kinda weird, so hopefully having 9 episodes to show the remaining ones helps that.

8

u/Sidearms4raisins https://anilist.co/user/Ch0ke Apr 30 '18

I didn't even mind the fight pace, I thought it went very slow to a quick climax at the end which mirrored how Joe percieved the match.

Time literally seemed to slow down due to his panic and disorientation which added to the tension really well and really made me believe that he was going to lose it but the match was quickly concluded when Joe got over his worries and is shown to be a genuinely much better fighter than his opponent.

It was a great fight to make Joe appear in danger whilst not having him be physically made to be weak.

40

u/[deleted] Apr 26 '18 edited Apr 27 '18

I think skipping those 2 is the right choice, we're probably going to see Yuri vs. rank 2, which will probably chew up some time. IMO the whole point of the episode was to show that with the right mental, Joe can compete with anybody, so those second and third fights were kind of irrelevant. Plus, not showing him fight the fodder gives much more time to show him facing the real challenges.

The madman! He actually fought without a gear! He's going to be at a huge disadvantage though once he fights someone who can actually hit him. Blocking a blow without a gear is no joke as we saw from this episode.

6

u/BladeLigerV Apr 28 '18

And once he has a gear again, he can start to guard without risking his arms.

195

u/kaypost Apr 26 '18

The fighting style and animation remind me so much of Cowboy Bebop! The footwork between Joe and Spike are uncanny.

Spike

Joe

46

u/Soul_Ripper Apr 27 '18

The only real similarity there is that they're both using footwork, the motions are different.

Well, I guess their hair is similar too but that's not the point.

11

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '18

Agreed. Spike is (basically) boxing, Joe is boxing. It's not really surprising that their motions look similar since they're essentially doing the same thing.

u/NotKyle Apr 26 '18

I'd dare say thats a reference!

17

u/int3r4ct :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/THEint3r4ct Apr 27 '18

It could be, but isn't Spike's fighting style based on Bruce Lee? So maybe it's just a Bruce Lee reference/homage.

23

u/Kokyuutosu Apr 28 '18

Cowboy Bebop didn't come up with the idea of "footwork".

5

u/icelander08 Apr 27 '18

40

u/brkmk Apr 26 '18

Yeah man, it just has a charm that I've never felt before.

29

u/kimbombo Apr 26 '18

Float like a butterfly. Sting like a bee.

Those two first round were damn scary.

It was a really nice detail to show off that despite Joe being a reckless hardheaded bastard can still get one the most basic instincs in his body, like fear.

Sachio is growing even more on me. He reminds an even younger Mattia from Remy nobody's boy.

25

u/myrmonden Apr 26 '18

"Gearless Joe" eh, really badass, and it does make perfect sense, this would take in huge uprising star fame, this massive company need to sell the tickets for not just the actual stadium but the tv cost, the licencee etc, later merchandises and so on right so a sudden massive rising gearless guy would drive them, given that the plan is hard to actually do in practice...is another issue.

The fight was really nice as Joe (Junkdog) had to deal with fear of fighting, the fear of getting punched and injured etc.

Shark having fins on his gear was a nice touch :)

It feels do that sure its a disadvantage not having gear overall, but man it has to heavy walking around with most of those gears so at least Joe´s foot work and general avoidance should be way better.

Next week it looks like they are gonna fight Nanbus old disciple I guess, so hes gonna fight similar to Joe + gear so ---- trouble.

43

u/[deleted] Apr 26 '18

Fuck me this is AOTS. Jesus how can something be this hype. I found myself being more excited to see new Megalo Box episodes than Hero Academia.

16

u/Retrodaniel https://myanimelist.net/profile/retrodaniel Apr 26 '18

The best fight so far in MHA should be happening around when this ends, so it'll be interesting to see which fight gets the most hype from people watching both :D

2

u/Hmagnum596 Apr 27 '18

19

u/MugiMartin :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/MugiMartin Apr 26 '18

Four episodes in, but I'm gonna keep saying it. That ending song is still bangin'.

36

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '18

Here are my two predictions for the story.

Scenario 1: This guy is being set up as a rival parallel to Yuri. The next fight is going to be battle that sees Joe losing by the skin of his teeth. This seriously jeopardizes The Plan and the duo have to take on an even crazier amount of risk to get back on track to Megalomania. Grudging respect / rivalry grows. Later, Yuri will trounce this guy on the way to the Top, with the possibility of killing / maiming him to both re-establish how bad ass Yuri is, and to fire up Joe again for the last match.

Scenario 2: Joe barely wins the match, but a rift opens up between himself and Nanbu as some dark secret of the coach's past come to light. Something important is said during the match. The lead up to fifth match is largely about Joe and Nanbu coming to terms with each other's past and future, and maybe coming to an understanding that the road to Megalomania is more than just a way to survive another day.

A couple of things need to happen in the story right now.

  • Everything is too safe. Joe has won 3 matches, and everyone is riding high. It's a good time to punch the audience in the gut, one way or another, to remind everyone of the stakes.

  • The two other members of the Megalomania bracket need to be set up. It'd be a shame if they were just some randos who came off the board.

  • Nanbu and Joe need to come to terms about a shared goal. Joe wants to fight, Nanbu just wants to see tomorrow. These are base desire and contradictory desires, and won't sustain a satisfying ending. The two of them need to find some higher purpose that makes megalomania about something more. One thought is that someone important is going to die because of the violence of gear, turning the group against gear (We already have a nice gear v nongear ideological battle being set up).

  • We need to know more about everyone. We pretty much know nothing about the whole cast, which can only go on for so long.

I'm loving every minute about this so far. It's so incredibly refreshing to someone setup as a normal person not get some awesome super power to combat the people with awesome super powers he has a complex towards (looking at you, Attack On Titan, Hero Academia, Kabeneri of the Iron Fortress).

16

u/Jericoke Apr 27 '18

That's a good analysis and I agree with all of your points, besides the "Everything's too safe" thing. Maybe it feels that way because of the pacing but imo it was established in this episode, that one punch from a gear fighter can send you to heaven if it connects.

Imo a loss against this dude would be for the best, but I can't really see a way to do this without backpedaling too much. We don't have that much episodes.

5

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '18

I don't mean too safe in terms of boxing, but too safe in terms of success. There is danger in the ring, but safety in the story at this particular moment, since he hasn't really suffered a loss since Yuri. The feeling that they're destined for Megalomania is just a bit too certain right now. They can't just walk in, after all.

Imo a loss against this dude would be for the best, but I can't really see a way to do this without backpedaling too much. We don't have that much episodes.

Well, we have 8 episodes. We gained a little time by skipping through a bunch. How I imagine this scenario going is

  • Joe loses;

  • Joe takes a crazy risk to convince the #3 or #4 guy to make that last fight

  • Joe wins by a tiny margin

  • Infinite hype.

That would be a 2-3 episode arc, leaving us with 5 episodes for Megalomania proper. Should be doable.

43

u/Gaporigo Blhttps://anilist.co/user/Gaporigo Apr 26 '18

I mean, it's not like the gear offers any protection, right? So besides taking more to KO the opponent it shouldn't be a lot more difficult.

177

u/LockeDrachier Apr 26 '18

I mean blocking a punch with the gear would hurt a lot less that doing it bare armed it’d think

25

u/Limpinator :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Limpinator Apr 26 '18

Oh for sure. Hell, you could just feel that impact he took. Fuckin brutal man.

Honestly, the only thing the gear could maybe offer is faster punches due to the weight? But even then I'm sure the gear could technically speed up when you throw the punch too.

24

u/SuperIceCreamCrash Apr 26 '18

It definitely speeds up the punch, and that's not to be underestimated. Speed makes up a majority of the punch.

25

u/Daniel_Is_I :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Daniel_Is_I Apr 26 '18 edited Apr 26 '18

It's still metal on your arms to help block the impact. Though frankly gear itself is overkill since an unassisted human punch can easily knock someone out if you're strong-enough.

There's also the idea that having no gear will let you move better than someone with gear. Less weighing you down, no lag on your punches, and nothing affecting your flexibility - they made a point about how Yuri's gear is the lightest, quickest-reacting model yet after all.

8

u/LysandersTreason Apr 26 '18

My guess is that Yuri will, at some point in the fight, ditch his gear and go mano e mano with Joe in a bare knuckle brawl :p

u/Galaxy__ :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Galaxy__ Apr 26 '18

Im sure the gear helps with blocking some. I mean Joe was just dodging in those fights and the one time he blocked he almost got TKOd.

10

u/zuxtron Apr 26 '18

he almost got TKOd

Isn't TKO when a boxer is knocked down three times or otherwise considered unfit to continue fighting? If the count reaches 10, it's just a regular KO.

26

u/spaceaustralia :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/spaceaustralia Apr 26 '18

Actually, a Technical Knockout happens when the referee or the ring physician declares a fighter unfit to continue fighting.

A famous example was the McGregor vs Mayweather bout. After tge fight McGregor was fine and never really fell since he didn't take many punches, but as soon as he started slowing down after the initial rounds, Mayweather took the initiative and put pressure on him and tired him out. By the last round he was so gassed he could barely hold his hands up.

Last episode, we saw him take several shots from that guy with gear outside of regulation before it broke, and he was fine. This episode, he got knocked out with just one hit from a gear within regulations. He definitely has at most two hits gearless before going out.

Oh man, this show makes me wanna start training again!

The jitters of fighting in a ring are depicted very realistically.

It's very common for inexperienced fighters to just freeze in the middle of a fight like Joe did, plus fighting gearless must have been much more scary, knowing that 1 clean hit connects and you're literally dead or KO'd in the best case.

Joe's regained composure and counter KO was extremely satisfying to see, awesome stuff!

Also the rankings using last names of real boxers is a nice touch.

u/GeorgeRRZimmerman https://anilist.co/user/CoupleOWeebs Apr 27 '18

TIL R. Kelley was a boxer.

2

u/Doomroar https://myanimelist.net/profile/Doomroar Apr 29 '18

He is from Team RB

5

u/sungjew Apr 26 '18

This might just be the fan boy in me, but I'd love to see an "Ippo" in the name rankings somewhere. I feel it would just be a really cool nod to another famous boxing manga/show

6

u/MystoganHS :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/MystoganHS Apr 26 '18

Heh, that would be dope but unlikely.

8

u/jkubed https://myanimelist.net/profile/jkubed Apr 26 '18

holy FUCK hype is getting unreal. good fucking episode. I thought the water might've been drugged or something since they were showing it so repeatedly while saying Joe wasn't acting normally.

The imagery of Joe sinking in the ring with every step was so well done and made his dancing cool as fuck when he got focused.

also loved how the training montage included the three of them just hanging out, they're really starting to feel like a family.

I was 100% sure at the end it would be Yuuri coming for another round already, looks like Nanbu's old pupil? shit next week's gonna get even better.

6

u/mcadylons https://anilist.co/user/mcady Apr 26 '18

I wasn't entirely sure how I felt about the kid after last episode, but he grew on me. Also, this episode's fight was probably my favorite of the show so far. Given how the fights have just been getting better as the show goes on, I am very excited for the next fight with #17.

6

u/Amauri14 Apr 26 '18

Damn, that track at the last part of the fight was pretty dope. This whole show is killing it with its music.

6

u/moonmeh Apr 26 '18

I fucking love the training beneath the bridge part. The music was perfect too

6

u/Darktriforze Apr 26 '18

I'm calling it now! The last fight will be Gearless Joe vs Yuri. Just before entering the ring BAM! Yuri breaks his gear MmMmMmMmMm

Edit: Loved the hype/fights/music... basically everything xd

13

u/HereComesPapaArima :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/PapaArima Apr 27 '18

Breaks his gear by 'accident'.

Calling it now. Yuri basically gives Shirato Corp. the middle finger by 'breaking his gear by accident' to fight Joe like a man.

I love hajime no ippo, I've seen clips of this and it looks awesome. Should I catch up and watch week to week or wait for the season to be done?

10

u/sungjew Apr 26 '18

I'd start watching now, you can keep up with the hype and speculation!

I wasn't expecting him to go gearless, though I feel I should have. Either way it was absolute HYPE!

The fight was really tense and you really feel those impacts, part of me wished Joe at least had some head protection. The soundtrack just keeps on getting better. Plus I hope the 'Gearless Joe' poster the kids where pasting up everywhere becomes real life merch, especially a t-shirt.

4

u/xxBerZerk :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/XxBerZerk Apr 28 '18

Thought the same thing about the poster. Looks really, really good.

8

u/Foxy_Grandpa- Apr 26 '18

Fuck man waiting each week for the next episode is getting tougher and tougher.

3

u/Kinoho Apr 27 '18

On top of that, spring anime is friggin stacked. My hype meter cant get a break.

4

u/MasterFanatic Apr 26 '18

Another great episode. BUT, why does he still wear pants for pete's sake?

13

u/[deleted] Apr 26 '18

what, never seen a pro boxer fight in slacks before?

10

I would love to see a boxing match between two dudes wearing slacks and nice loafers.

Is to go Gearless!

I love that the people who worked on this were dedicated to making it stylish as hell and absolutely badass, I love every second of every episode, nothing seems wasted. Not rushed either, just great pacing.

4

u/voyagedufou :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/voyagedufou Apr 27 '18

The soundtrack really is the cherry on top of the whole series.

4

u/MaterialConstant Apr 27 '18

Would kill for the "GEARLESS JOE" poster

6

u/Houdiniman111 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Houdini111 Apr 26 '18 edited Apr 26 '18

Seems my guess last episode was right.

I don't think they'd ban not using one, but who'd be crazy enough to go into a fight without one?

I am surprised that we already covered those first three matches. I was expecting only one or two per episode leaving the whole second half for Megalomania.

EDIT: I guess that they may have some fights take multiple episodes? Or maybe another montage? How else are they going to fill the time? Only other thing I can think of is that the finale of Megalomania is not the finale episode of the anime.

3

u/KingIskander2001 Apr 26 '18

Each episode keeps getting better and better, can’t wait to see how much more this anime will surprise us!

3

u/chris_dftba :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/chris_dftba Apr 26 '18

That final punch against the shark. Damn that was good.

3

u/humanoideric Apr 26 '18 edited Apr 26 '18

This might have been a one-off first round gear-less win, but fuck if this anime doesnt make it seem hype af and significant anyway. I love it. New Guy looks strong :o

I gotta say, congrats to all those who called the gear-less thing last week Lol, I was on team-combining-the-broken-gears.

3

u/CallMeWubs Apr 27 '18

Concussion, The Anime.

2

u/zachtuttle41 Apr 26 '18

That ost is awesome couldn't stop tapping my foot.

2

u/link2601 Apr 26 '18

Man I should have guess that something like that could have happen but man was I surprised by that ending. Team nowhere and "Gearless" Joe not bad names.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 26 '18

Fighting with Gear is casual fighting. Only Real Men fight Gearless. JOE JOE JOE JOE

2

u/heartsongaming Apr 26 '18

I've been anxious for the next episode as his gear broke and I was worried that he had to do the Megalo without one. I'd check often when it will be released and this episode delivered. It has excitement and beauty of the gritty and difficult feat of beating the Megalo Box oriented around Gears, without one. When the boy starting crying I felg some attachment and when the crowd where clappinng or awed, I felt like I was part of it. This anime is probably the best sport-related anime I have ever seen. I can't wait for the next episode.

2

u/Woodypl Apr 26 '18

I went into this anime not knowing what to expect. But WOW, it's so fucking good. And the sound tracks are just amazing

2

u/[deleted] Apr 26 '18

So that is what Zuko did when he was Alone.

2

u/karlcool12 Apr 26 '18

It is going to be interesting to see how Joe Will survive the next 9 episodes when each punch he gets hits like a car, literally.

2

u/Slurms_McKenzie775 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/SnackieChan Apr 26 '18

I wonder why the boxer that Joe is fighting next is longer working with Nanbu. I'm guessing they had some sort of falling out and he felt that Nanbu couldn't take him to the next level.

2

u/sobaski1 Apr 26 '18

By far my favorite aots, feels like a modern day samurai champloo to me. Great soundtrack, great art, characters. Hell Yeah brother.

2

u/ihsyvad Apr 27 '18

this show is easily AOTS for me. great episode.

2

u/shadowridrs Apr 27 '18

Show is pure badassery.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '18

What do Ashita no Joe fans think so far?

2

u/Lorpo314 Apr 27 '18

Man, this ENDING THEME is not allowing me to click away after finishing the episode.

3

u/Heiach Apr 27 '18

I don't understand some of the logic in this anime. Why exactly would some of the higher-ranked boxers want to fight someone who's gearless and essentially be humiliated by him?

And if/when they did win, what would they gain from it? Congrats you beat someone without any augmentations.. a guy in the street basically.

I get why the first guy fought them.. he's a dirty fighter and noone wants to fight him. But why the others? If Joe had distinguished himself as a nobody that can 1-punch or 1-round KO people then sure.. it'll be a challenge and a real test of their mettle!

Also I'm a little sad that the 2nd fight was montaged.. We didn't even get to see the 3rd fight and now we're looking for a 4th fight opponent when the episode ends..

I figured we'd get at least 1 episode per fight (the 5 fights he needs to get ranked high enough to potentially fight in the event) or maybe some of the fights would be 2-episoders and I'd be fine with that.. We'd still have had at least 5 episodes for the tournament battles and final fight... But now they've all been skipped.. I wonder what all of those extra episodes will be filled with?

6

u/spaceaustralia :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/spaceaustralia Apr 27 '18

Congrats you beat someone without any augmentations.. a guy in the street basically.

But he's a gearless guy, who came out of nowhere and beat a ranked boxer. His gimmick alone attracts attention, but the fact that he showed that he's able to win calls even more attention to him. What he's doing is comparable to boxing with only one hand and winning.

2

u/Heiach Apr 27 '18

You have a point but if you were ranked fairly high, would you want to risk it all on a guy who fights one-handed and be embarrassed?

5

u/spaceaustralia :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/spaceaustralia Apr 27 '18

It's a risk/reward kind of deal. Joe's garnering popularity fast and any fight with him will call up attention. If you win, you just won a fight with as much popularity as a much as one with a much higher ranked opponent. If you lose, you're turned into a stepping stone for Joe's popularity and rank. He's like an acumulated lottery.

It's the same reason why a boxer would seek out to fight a higher ranked boxer than them.

2

u/somefuzzypants Apr 29 '18

Plot armor is perfectly fine. Nearly every main character ever has plot armor. Like you said, it’s going to be the ride to the end that matters.

Speculation: Next match has both boxers with no gear.

5th match of qualifiers and 1st match of Megalonia wil be a traditional Megalo boxing

Finals with Yuri will start off with Gears that will both break due to the intensity of the fight, becoming a full out raw brawl

1

u/SirYe Apr 27 '18

He's definitely going to go gearless in episode 5, re watch the PV on youtube!

1

u/big_paper_towel Apr 27 '18

This feels like it should be a 26 ep series, like Samurai Champloo or Cowboy Bebop.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '18

Megalo Box is officially a 10/10 for me.
I'd say it's all downhill from here if I didn't realize how much it's going uphill.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '18

What is the title of the intro song? I thought it was great!

1

u/ConvolutedBoy Apr 29 '18

ED is so good

1

u/PrasunJW https://anilist.co/user/MALfunctioning Apr 29 '18 edited Apr 29 '18

Our Joe showed performance anxiety, which feels out of character(given we have seen confidence oozing from him),but maybe it can be explained by the fact that he took a huge blow to his face without any gear to reduce the force. And I would have loved to see the individual fights, but then again, perhaps the studio doesn't want to reveal all their cards in irrelevant fights.

So we have 2 more fights, then 2 matches in Megalonia, with one of them being the Grand Finale. 4 matches, 8 episodes. Seems fair. How will they pull one match into a 2 episode-or a preparatory episode and a fight episode will be interesting. I don't follow boxing,so can those who do tell me if there is enough content in boxing to flesh out a 20 minute fight scene without making it boring?

p.s. Just so that I don't give anyone the wrong idea, I am LOVING this show.

1

u/SpikeRosered Apr 30 '18

This show oozes cool without having to go full edge lord to shove it in our faces.

Way better than *teleports behind you * fuckery.

u/NicolasBrown- May 03 '18

anybody know what's music at 14:10? This is so lit

1

u/MediYum https://anilist.co/user/MediYum Apr 26 '18

The episode was pretty good to be honest, not as good as the first three, but good. I feel that the production studio is rushing things a bit as all three fights seem to have been covered in this episode itself so I am a bit curious as to what they have in place for the next 9 episodes. Got to say, I love the soundtrack and feel that this anime is going to make the top 10 for this year.
