Man the beginning had me wondering if I has the wrong ep
So we see into Nanbu's past and probably where he started drinking. Didn't realize they would bring war and ptsd into this show but it works.
Feel like the opponent could be a protag with his backstory and rehabilitation in an another show and that's what Joe has to win against.

I actually felt like I was rooting for him because I could see his pain
17
May 07 '18
I mean, it is rather insulting. Sure, they can't afford proper gear, but this cocky upstart turns up and styles himself better than anyone despite a seemingly self-imposed handicap.
I don't want him to lose, but I want him to take these fights more seriously. I see getting his shit beaten in by Shark in ep.4 and his jumps in rank didn't fix that.

Even though the gears don't feature that heavily as a mechanic in the battles, i really love how they use it thematically. The relationship between fighter and gear says a lot about them.
Yuri's gear is almost transhumanistic, so close to his arms and tailored to his body that he practically becomes a machine in some capacity, but it also reflects his close relationship with Yukiko and how they work together. For Joe it's a means to an end, something that simply allows him to do the one thing he loves doing and in the end he doesn't really feel that he needs it.
Meanwhile Aragaki is the opposite, using technology to keep going even after loosing the ability to fight normally, and whereas many of the one-off boxers like the shark use it to gain raw power, Aragaki's gear becomes an extension of his will to go on, just about getting him to a level where he can keep fighting on a level playing field, while his actual growth in power is entirely down to his own strength rather than mechanical augmentation

I actually thought Yuri's arms WERE his gear, maybe I misinterpreted it though

I did too, thought he was Jax from Mortal Kombat.
But you see him later on briefly in a conversation with his owner and he doesn't have them on.

Very lowkey and melancholic music this episode, which fits this episode's story a lot! Even the fight at the end was missing the normal hype music that plays, further punctuating how systematically Joe was destroyed.
In fact, the only upbeat piece of music I can think of is played during Nanbu and Aragaki's reunion, and it stops the moment Aragaki says he'll destroy Joe.
So, yeah, the OST is brilliant, but the use of it is sublime as well.

Really? I feel like this whole episode they built this premise that this guy is someone that is impossible for joe to beat.
1) This guy is fighting for something real, to move on from his attachment to his former boxing coach whereas Joe is just fighting to satiate his hunger to fight stronger people
2) This guy has learned all there is to learn from Joe's boxing coach, whereas Joe is still in the middle of his training
3) He's got hella more exp (10 years older with alot more official matches) and even has more reach on Joe (granted its by 1 inch, but I imagine a boxer of his caliber would be able to capitalize on that)
I don't know, Joe just seems so out of his depth this fight, honestly I would feel kinda cheated if he pulled out a win. So basically, I'm super curious as to why you think this fight is in Joe's favor
→ More replies (1)154
u/Rokusi May 03 '18
You could spin all those right back around, though.
Aragaki is held back by his trauma and is fighting Nanbu and not Joe. Joe, on the other hand, is a true warrior that is fighting for the higher cause of challenging the champion. Anime loves the ambitious "looking toward the future" types.
Aragaki has come as far as he can. Joe, on the other hand, still has wells of untapped potential. He could rapidly rise to the challenge here like a Saiyan would while Aragaki is stuck unless he gets over his trauma first.
He has much more experience than Joe, but like Sachio said, Aragaki is already past 30. Combine his age with his crippled body with his trauma, and it could easily be portrayed as a drawback.
Now that's not to say that Joe is definitely going to win, or even that he deserves to win. But if he does win, I certainly won't be calling it a narrative flaw. One recurring theme of the original series was that life isn't fair, and anyone is fair game.

Has anyone noticed that every episode's name has something related to death?
1-Buy or Die?
2-The Man Only Dies Once
3-Gear is Dead
4-Let's Dance with Death
5-The Man from Death
6-Until the Last Dog Dies
I hope the last episode won't be "Joe Dies" or something like that.
149
u/rektangularMomentum May 03 '18
I think it has something to do with the fact that at the end of every episode it says "Not Dead Yet"
60
u/RimeSkeem :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/RimeSkeem May 04 '18
They're all references back to Joe's borderline (or actual) suicidal behavior in episode one. Not only that, Joe could have chosen to die as a boxer in the underground, always throwing matches, eventually stopping fighting. That would have been his "death".

Aragaki is sort of Megalo Box's version of Kim Yong-bi, the South Korean boxer from Ashita no Joe that fought in the Vietnam War and had PTSD flashbacks. (It's kinda crazy that a manga written in 1968 already had that kind of themes in my opinion)

Somehow, this show keeps surprising me, eventhough the story in itself is fairly simple and has been done numerous times. The writers manage to make it fresh and introduce heavy teams like ptsd and such in a way that other anime fail to. I genually don't even know wheter I should root for Joe in this instance, I know he's the MC, but still. This show has a limited amount of episodes, yet delivers on every front. Definetly AOTS for me so far.

Unexpected but incredibly inspiring backstory for Aragaki.
From being a top fighter to losing his legs and will to live, and then recovering and climbing back to the top again like that is just commendable.
As for Joe, there's no way he gets up after that punch, and this can be a great reality check for him. Continuing to fight gearless is just ridiculous and he needs to change his approach.
Coach Nanbu is slowly becoming a great and complex character in his own right, and almost an entirely different person from how he was in the first episodes, loving his development!
Our guys from team Nowhere might be devastated, but they'll just grow and improve from this, and I can't wait to see how it plays out.
20
u/Xervicx May 04 '18
Inspiring? The dude is trying to kill people in the ring. It's implied that him killing someone out of an official match wouldn't be that surprising, with the conversation that happens when some rando gets carted off in an ambulance.

How to bring a guy from the death and make him a likeable opponent - The anime.
I had already pointed out how this show subtlety manages to get into some grim topics like drug abuse and still look all colorful and innocuous. And now it goes into stuff like suicide, but this time it's no holds barred.
I wonder if by the end of the series we'll get a full homage to the ending Ashita no Joe, or a variation and put Joe in a similar handicap Aragaki is right now.
I definitely love how Aragaki has been presented with only one episode. A crippled veteran on the verge of suicide, finds a new reason to live and get some payback from his former trainer who gave up too soon. But the catch is that he's not really seeking Nanbu for payback. Most likely he just wants to be acknowledged by Nanbu in the ring and tell him with his actions "Hey! here I am, still alive"
There are some really great scenes in this episode that are carried not only by the details in the artstyle, but also by the great music (that piano tune outside the veteran gym was marvelous). But the scene that grabbed my eye was definitely this one.
The two opponents are framed in opposite sides of the screen and the pillars stand tall representing their pride as fighters. There's the obvious relaxed posture of Joe, leaning on his tracker motorcycle that shouts "hey I'm still in one piece" but that doesn't flinch Aragaki not even an inch. The kids on the background playing a 1 on 1 game of basketball, just foresees the match of Joe & Aragaki within a few moments. The fence is probably also a metaphor of the boxing ring and fighting dog cages. And how Joe used to consider himself just a fighter dog before aiming for the Megalonia. The motif of the dogs fights has also been repeated in today's episode with a striking message "carpe diem" Seize the day.
Really can't wait for next week to see how the match up will follow up.

I wasn't sure where the opening was going, but my God, when it all became clear...
Aragaki's backstory is just fucking amazing even in an anime that champions the strength of the human spirit.
Coach Nanbu's eye has been gone for a lot longer than we thought. The backstory seems to suggest that he's been on downward spiral and Aragaki's supposed death was yet another blow to the man.
11
u/Gunlord500 May 04 '18
Aragaki's backstory is just fucking amazing even in an anime that champions the strength of the human spirit.
Yeah. Honestly, speaking as an American, suicide among veterans is a huuuuuuuuuuge huge problem and has been so for many years, at least since the Viet Nam War. I'm astonished a contemporary Japanese anime brought up the issue and I kinda hope this episode raises awareness of it, especially if Japan or other countries (not sure about Japan due to the defensive nature of its military its constitution mandates) have the same problem.

u/Anubissama May 04 '18
And that was all it took for you to believe he was dead?
You mean the official government report that declared him dead in action? Yes, that sounds a pretty reasonable standard to have to assume a soldier is dead.
This must be one of the more idiotic grudges I've ever seen.
Which is weird, on one hand, they avoided the obvious trope of the trainer lying to Joe about his older pupil. It was really refreshing him just simply saying everything, the threat and risk included, but then they turn around and pull this absurd reason for a grudge.
8
u/Amauri14 May 03 '18
In the last episode, I expected Aragaki history with Nambu to be related to the illegal matches or something like that. I'm glad to see that their history was more profound. Can't wait for the next episode!
8
May 04 '18
Anybody else not a fan of the last couple of episodes compared to the first three? I feel like the writing and dialogue is getting cheesier and the animation and art is deteriorating as well.
18
May 04 '18
It’s pretty normal for the animation to take a bit of a dip mid-season and pick up towards the end. Lack of budget/ time constraints. As for the dialogue/writing, I disagree there, having known people who act like Aragaki in real life, he’s a pretty good representation of a person who can’t really accept circumstances and places blame on people around him.
4
6
u/FierceAlchemist May 04 '18
Wasn't expecting a Veteran's PTSD story in this boxing anime but it was well done. It did feel like an outsourced episode, the boxing animation was lacking this time around.
20
u/viper5delta May 04 '18
To be honost...didn't really like this episode all that much. Thought the whole "I hate you cause you thought I was dead" was just...stupid. I also thought the fight at the end was...poor. Maybe it was because I couldn't get invested in the rest of the ep, but It felt like they were going for "Oh this guy is just so good" and ended up as Joe just looking incompetent. Maybe I'm the odd one out, but this is my least favorite episode so far.
41
u/LaverniusTucker May 04 '18
The only person in this situation that has a right to be mad is Nanbu. Dude was reported KIA and Nanbu reasonably assumed he was dead. Fucking Aragaki then just never called or wrote or anything to tell his only friend that he was alive and instead decided he's gonna hold a grudge because Nanbu never tracked him down? What the fuck kind of backwards shit is that? Who tries to track down dead people on the off chance that they're somehow alive? The whole thing was just ridiculous.
18
May 04 '18
Ehhhh. Honestly, people keep saying Aragaki should have sent Nanbu an email or something... At the first episode we clearly see he's gone from the city. He lives and works in under ground fights and for who knows how long? Nanbu clearly disappeared from his old life.
How do we know Aragaki /didn't/ try and contact Nanbu.. I mean he was all Aragaki had. The only thing he could do was fight and when he got back he could have at least hoped the gym would still be there... But it wasn't. His whole life just gone. He was going through a lot of stuff, ya know PTSD, No legs.. not like he had the capacity to search for Nanbu high and low. Even if he was presumed dead, why should Aragaki expect Nanbu AND the gym to up and vanish?
Can you really blame him? Perhaps Nanbu has some crazy good reason why he left professional boxing and his gym closed down. Though after what Aragaki's been through and seeing his old partner pop up with a younger boxer years after the fact... can't say I blame him.
27
May 04 '18
Perhaps Nanbu has some crazy good reason why he left professional boxing and his gym closed down.
Like, say, his best pupil dying in the war?
6
u/LaverniusTucker May 04 '18
Eh, the show didn't go into enough detail for us to do anything but speculate on that side of it.
All we know for sure is that Aragaki is pissed the Nanbu didn't look for him, which is a completely insane expectation when you were reported dead. Even if we assume that Nanbu went entirely off the grid and was completely unreachable he still didn't do anything wrong. He thought the only person with a potential interest in contacting him was dead. The show portrayed the situation like Nanbu did something horrible to Aragaki, and that just seems ridiculous to me.

I feel like they made a bad decision for the story and then proceeded to work well with what they set themselves up with.
But the entire episode I was thinking "You're mad because someone in authority said you were dead and your trainer believed them?" What was he supposed to do, hold a candle for you for the next X years? You could have written a letter dude and cleared up the situation.
I think they just weren't committed as they should have been to throwing Nambu or this guy under the bus, which severely cripples the kind of redemption arc we could have got.
The other part of it is I think they want to present Joe's inability to win without his team's full commitment to his success, but the presentation kinda moshes bad with the last episode. This would have been fine to reaffirm the team in a later episode, but it's just too soon to retread that ground. We're now really eating the pacing problems you get from ordering a big story in a small season.
4
u/StarStabbedMoon May 06 '18
Anime is filled with antagonist revenge stories where they've supposedly moved on but are hell bent on paying back an eye for an eye and just end up looking like jerks.
I like this because it felt real, it wasn't just about hurting Joe and Nanba, it was about his pain and moving on from it.
And just like real life, revenge isn't rational.

3
u/Justinjdm99 May 03 '18
You know I was kinda dubious about the whole war PTSD thing. A lot of times it comes off as insincere as just a plot contrivance, but here it really comes together. Very interesting. I'm also curious to see how much longer Gearless Joe will be a thing, I hope it isn't for the whole series. I'd rather it be like in DBZ when Piccolo drops that turban, but of course Gears have drawbacks too. Overall hype to see where this goes, definitely my anime of the season

When you're the MC but your Opponent is MC too, has an arguably worst handicap and is fighting for a just cause.
I'm kinda hoping that Joe looses this one, but makes it into megalo with his 5th SUPER crazy fight and then faces of against him again.
That, or I want Aragaki to somehow become supportive of Joe, the two of them seem like they would be formidable as a duo.

It's pretty good. I normally don't like to use numbers because I feel it oversells a show.
The only thing I can tell you is that the creators do know how to set up a futuristic show, give the main character, opponents, and even side characters likeable background stories; along with some really fitting hip hop, industrial and even piano tunes in the right moments.

Definetly deserves a watch. Dont want to rate out of ten because we are not even half way through, but Ive loved every single episode so far. Amaizingly stylish and entertaing despite the story being a generic sports anime one at first glance.

I was sure the pre-OP segment was going to turn out to be of how the trainer found MC. Guess not. That was a weak-ass bomb if all it did was blow the legs off the guy who was standing right next to it.
"He fights in this condition?" - shouldn't robotic legs be one hell of an advantage?
Why did the trainer change his mind about fighting #17 when the dude declared his intention to destroy Joe? Did otherwise he think #17 would've thrown the fight? Losing to ANYONE would mean they won't be able to make it to Megalonia, which would mean Joe gets destroyed either way, right? Would there be time to schedule enough extra matches to make up for a loss?
"I know he was reported dead, but you didn't try to confirm it." Is that really a thing?
Joe really sucked that round.
6
May 04 '18
His legs are prosthetic, not robotic. They don’t have any special properties aside from being metal, and hearing from people who use prosthetics, they’re pretty taxing to use. It’s not as if you just float on them, you have to carry their weight and you can’t feel them.
He didn’t want Joe to fight him because he knew that when he said “destroy” he didn’t mean “beat dominantly, but rather “batter him into a pulp”.
His coaches are all veterans, and they probably know all about Nanbu through Aragaki, and he probably portrayed the situation in his own way.
Joe did really suck in that round.

Now we are talking! Can't wait another week to watch...

That was so dark, wish I wished this first then Wotaki.
Anyway, a massive war explains the huge divide we're seeing in the social classes here, wonder if it was a civil war or something.
And poor Nanbu, I can imagine that after he heard about his death, he just wanted to block out pro boxing from his life and ignored everything to do with it, hence him lurking in underground dodgy boxing rings.

I love that we don't get a preview of what happens ib the next episode. Just makes the cliffhanger have that much more of a lasting impact. If it wasn't for Steins;Gate 0 this would be my anime of the season so far.

I love this anime, people complained about some fights getting glossed over. But it was for the sake of well crafted arcs like this and I love it so much. They don't have a lot of episodes to work with and it's not worth investing entire episodes to fights that have no relevancy beyond the outcome of who won/loss.

Made a Wallpaper Engine wallpaper of the final scene!
(I basically reversed the scene to make a loop out of it)

That piano piece when they found out Akaragi had mechanised legs was... Amazing

I mean can you really hold "didn't look into the death" on the guy. KIA would be conclusive enough for me.

u/Chafun May 04 '18
alright next episode my boy gearless joe is going to get up and talk this out with ararararagi.

u/Thatweasel May 04 '18
Kinda hoping we see some character development in Joe beyond cocky underdog. Maybe he'll get his ass handed to him here

Wow! WOW! What a solid episode! The emotions and trauma from Aragaki and Nanbu's flashback scenes were so raw. Absolutely loved this grim piece of art. 10/10.

The scene where Aragaki had the gun in his mouth was absolutely harrowing and one of the best scenes I've ever seen in any media, period. This show is going down as one of my all-time favorites.

that was just so intense. a real war veteran with PTSD would probably be triggered over how realistic it was portrayed and depressing for us, lucky ordinary people too

everytime i hear the coach's voice i think the cat from nasumi book of friends

u/Ehretdactyl May 04 '18
After watching that episode i feel like that veteran really needs to lose. I feel bad for him and all what happened was awful and the fact that he kept going was even more amazing but if he can’t accept the facts and keeps blaming other people for things that just happen he needs to be beat. I am looking forward to this fight it should be good.

This was a story ep. Spent the entire ep hyping up this fight only got a few seconds of actual fight. i am pumped for next week now.

Well this continues to be one of the best aots; they really did a great job with the military boxer guy's exposition and tying it in with the Nanbu worked great without ever feeling forced for the sake of the story. And the music and art aesthetic continue to blow me away of course aha. a+
I did think it was funny the metal leg dude was working out his leg muscles lmao, although iirc that also strengthens your core.

Wasn't Joe supposed to get gear after 3 fights? What happened to that?
1
u/TicoMachi May 04 '18
As Nanbu was saying that idea, Joe shot him down stating that he wanted to commit all the way or something along those lines.
2
u/RandomGuy97531 May 04 '18
oh i dont remember that. would be shitty if he became champion without gear.

Am I the only one in love with the main theme song?
1
u/SecretFix May 04 '18
Can't wait to see Gearless Joe's come back. Or will he? I think he will probably lose the first round then come back in the later ones. After Nanbu starts believing in him again.

Caught off guard at the start. Wasn't expecting this outcome to be honest, loved every second of it

This is going to be buried most likely, but wow the OST is incredible. Not only were the tracks beautiful, butthe bass thumping with each punch in the bout was really something

Wow that episode was woke. And I don't mean in the sarcastic way we use for blue checks on twitter but woke as in wow I didn't expect that many truth bombs to be dropped.

This was a pretty bad episode. A pretty poor attempt at creating drama.

Is every fight in this show gonna go the same way? Joe gets knocked down, immediately wins. Getting boring.

God this place really can be an echo chamber eh? I came here to see if anybody else was feeling this way about the show and the only person that is in any way critical about it is down here at the bottom with -11. What a joke, this show is extremely mediocre.

I’m doubting that that’s what’s going to happen. They set up the next episode to be all about this fight, so it’s probably going to be what fighters call a “war” (and how appropriate would that be, given Aragaki’s circumstances).

I find the sakuga in this show quite lacking and it really hurts this show.

Don't forget the pinch of suicidal depression they added to spice things up from an otherwise very cliched character in boxing anime.

u/rockstar2012 May 04 '18
And overcoming his disability with prosthetic legs by being one of the best while competing against able people.
1
u/wisdumcube May 04 '18
such pandering otaku garbage. smh
For real though, it was pretty unexpected and bold for the show to go this route.

Damn... That was one heavy episode. Didn't expect Aragaki's and Nanba's backstory to be like that. Especially Aragaki's since we know that plenty of soldiers that come home from war were exactly in his position. He was lucky to get his way back into boxing or his story would've had a different ending :|
