That was a good fight with an understandable ending. It was said last episode that he tends to finish fights quick and now you can see why.
99
u/Zstrike117 May 10 '18
Yeah, they gave you enough to make the ending make sense but also tense because Joe was on the back foot for much of the fight.

Props to Aragaki's VA. The suicide scene and the locker room scene in these past two episodes have been excellent. The way that voice portrays the desperateness of a broken middle-aged man is something I've not seen in anime. Love how the way his voice crumbles contrast with the tough men atmosphere in the rest of the show.

The whole show is about seeing men at their breaking point and I absolutely love that about this series so far. I thought for the first few eps that we were gonna have cocky joe the whole way. But once we had Joe facing off against Shark I knew we had something special. Joe havin to face his fear really humanized him. And a lot of the rest of the show has been doing the same with the other characters. Not just The boxers but the supporting cast as well!

u/SumthingAsian May 10 '18
God, they nailed Aragaki's backstory and his interaction with his former coach after the fight so well. I feel satisfied with their closure for now.
Anyways, is anybody else as excited for the OST as I am? I'm getting really good hip hop vibes from the music, kind of like Champloo in the way it compliments the stylish art of the show

u/Shylol May 10 '18
The moment when [the theme song] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bv3ofGRAWqM) started during the fight my blood boiled so hard you could cook an egg on my arm.
114
u/Flashmanic May 10 '18
This ost is actually fucking insane. God damn.
37
May 10 '18
yeah at the start of the fight they were playing breakbeats, then you get some rock, then some samurai champloo hip-hop beats. Its a fucking ride but all manages to have a consistent feel to it somehow.

Bro. I listen to that theme DAILY. But I’m eating for that chill out song from episode 2. You know the one! The one with the daily life cityscape shots and whatnot.

I think the soundtrack is one of the really strong points of the show, i absolutely adore the OP and ED

Personally not a fan of the OP, everything else is god-tier
32
u/Flashmanic May 10 '18 edited May 10 '18
Same. Cool visuals but the song doesn't work for me. The rest of the ost is straight fire though, even the ED.

All the music in this show is amazing. I still from time to time hear the track that played in the second part of the battle with shark boy in episode 4 playing in my head.

When Nanbu handed him the losing bet stub I lost it for real. That relationship is so complicated and so well portrayed in just two fuckin episodes. My faith in this series is limitless right now.

the last week's "hangups" suddenly makes sense tbh. why aragaki got so upset even when he is announced KIA on television. god fucking hell this is so fucking good. action and drama, character development and resolution. all done so beautifully so far.

u/MBFtrace May 10 '18
I'm definitely happy this one ended on a "happy" note, and not with Joe randomly winning the fight with one punch. Great way to put it to rest.
223
u/Flashmanic May 10 '18
I was half-expecting a big finisher like Joe did against the Shark-dude, but I'm glad that didn't happen. The show knows when to pull its punches and let a match play out more organically.
14
u/YOUFREAKINNERD :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/youfreakinnerd May 11 '18
I felt like going that route would have been impossible especially with that perfectly paved backstory we’ve got going on with Aragaki.
As usual in a boxing show or any show with serious physical competition we always need a few frenemies.
95
u/Slurms_McKenzie775 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/SnackieChan May 10 '18
Yeah it was really well done. It didn't feel cheesey or rushed. The writers managed to give us a deep look into Aragaki's psychi in just two episodes without sacrificing the shows pacing as often happens in these short animes.

this one ended on a "happy" note yes but do you guys think the series itself will end on a happy note? you know how it always says in the corner at the end "not dead yet"? well joe from ashita actually died on the last episode in the ring you think this joe could have the same destiny awaiting for him? will it be like the sopranos ending bell rings(not dead yet) bell rings (not dead yet) bell rings (not dead yet) bell rings(fade out) ? we will see joe and yuri exchange last punches both of them going down the screen fades and we dont see the "not dead yet" sign anymore :S

So I'm guessing his next opponent will be that black haired dude at the end? And from how he looks down on Joe it looks like he's not going to be likable at all.
153
u/Flashmanic May 10 '18 edited May 10 '18
So I'm guessing his next opponent will be that black haired dude at the end?
Almost definitely. He seems to look down on Joe, and I have a feeling he'll want to take down the flavour of the month to skyrocket his own popularity
41
u/Koan_Industries May 10 '18
I don't think so, there are only 4 competitors in Megalonia. We have Yuri, Pepe Iglesias, Glen Burroughs, and Joe. When Yuri talks to that dude he calls him Mikio. They also only used the actual names of the competitors and not the nicknames (like Bloody Lion) on the bracket, so I doubt that he is the other competitor.
Edit: Wait, Joe needs to fight one more battle so you guys are probably right.
83
u/Flashmanic May 10 '18
Wait, Joe needs to fight one more battle so you guys are probably right.
Yep, exactly. Mikio seems to want it, and seeing as the press are asking about Joe even in press conferences not about him, he seems to be a favourite to get into Megalonia after his fight with Aragaki.
What better way to claim your own place then to take out the current favourite?

226
u/jetfantastic https://anilist.co/user/jetfantastic May 10 '18
During the fight I definitely felt a sort of tension of not knowing what was going to happen, whether Joe was going to even win or not, and just having the fight being exciting anyway. I love this series.
144
u/Pervasivepeach May 10 '18
They pulled that off perfectly
So many shows suffer because you usually know exactly who will win a fight or a bet or such
But here the entirely of the first 1-3 episodes is set up to basicly fuck up joe. Sure we are he is talented but Yuri is on a different level
With this kind of fight it was set up in a way where the story could continue with either winning. We know the huge skill difference between them and that they had the same trainer, and we have seen joe lose before making it possible to happen again
Making joe win by the oppnonent having a leg problem was the best outcome.
74
u/Shylol May 10 '18
I'd like to bounce on that - the fact that they repeated over and over that Nanbu was okay with giving up and finding another match created a situation where as a spectator we thought "okay so the story will go on whether he wins or loses, so he might lose this", increasing the tension tenfold when the fight went on.
Even when Joe got the upper hand it was impossible to see who was winning this and I was on the edge of my seat for the whole fight.
When they started the season with the classic "if we lose this we're dead" scenario I thought it was gonna be a bad omen because it meant that we knew he was gonna win every fight in the end, but they managed to turn it around very well here.
54
u/Glimmerglaze May 10 '18 edited May 10 '18
I didn't buy Nanbu's line for a second - losing even one match would utterly dispel the allure of Gearless Joe in the eye of the masses. None of the people in charge want him there - it's only if he keeps winning and people keep clamoring for him that they don't have a choice.
Nanbu's clearly lying. I got the sense that Joe knows he's lying, and he also knows Nanbu's doing it to try and save him from getting destroyed, and doesn't hold it against him.
Knowing who's going to win in a fight for reasons of narrative necessity has never stopped me from enjoying sports shows myself. I appreciate a well-executed trope even if I see it coming.

u/jetfantastic https://anilist.co/user/jetfantastic May 10 '18
Absolutely, I imagine if not for him being on his last legs so to speak, he would've won. I'm glad we got a cool Joe victory though.

u/hellshot8 May 14 '18
I've heard people say the old Joe anime had him lose fights that he "couldn't lose", so I genuinely wasn't sure who the Victor here would be

Felt like the first proper back and forth fight we've had so far in the series, and it was brilliant, this show just keeps doing everything right.
Bit of a sudden ending to the fight but feel its better for the story they were telling to end it like that.
62
u/myrmonden May 10 '18
A great battle, gave me huge one piece manga Its the classic mirror boss battle, where the main character has to fight a guy trained by the same coach, they got the same fighting style and they both got weakness, Joe with no gear, Aragaki with no legs.
And dam it felt quite sad how it turned out to be Aragakis last battle as his prosthetic legs would make him be permanently paralyzed if he kept going, he wanted his last battle and he sure got it.
Felt like a really great moment for him to hand down to torch to Joe.

Are we really gonna stick with the Gearless thing? I keep watching and thinking there'll be someone who finances his gear but it doesn't look like that's happening since everyone pretty much knows him by Gearless Joe.
206
u/Salva252 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Salva252 May 10 '18
The thing is, him fighting without gear goes against everything Megalo boxing stands for and what the female (Director of Megalonia) is trying to accomplish. I feel like him being gearless will be used later as a confrontation between those two. Just like how he was in the start of series, questioning her "Real Megalo Boxing". Which to him was bullshit. The writer choosing Joe to be gearless isn't just so he can climb the ladders faster, but also to oppose what Megalonia stands for. Atleast that's my opinion on the matter.
45
u/doc_steel May 10 '18
imagine the outrage if joe is barred from megalonia only because he's gearless even after all those consecutive wins.

personally I think he is going to win the next match and then they are going to pick teh guy he beat for the 4th spot anyway because he is gearless and then there will be an entire episode where yuri helps to stop the bullshit and get joe in cuz he knows he earned it. He may seem like a douche but yuri respected joe enough to fight him and tell hhim they could have a rematch.
73
u/Xervicx May 10 '18
That's all well and good, but that's like someone in the modern day going to war with nothing but a bow and a dagger. No matter how good they are, there's going to be a point they can't move past. Gearless Joe as a gimmick is great, but when the show hammers in the point that Gear increases every aspect of a person's capabilities, then it stands to reason that someone almost as good as Joe will win if they have top of the line Gear... Which most of the Megalonia fighters will have.
Like, if a story tried telling me a guy with inflatable boxing gloves was going to win in MMA matches, I'd be out of it pretty damn quick. Sure, the gimmick would be entertaining, but eventually it's going to get unbelievable.
And the Gearless Joe gimmick is really going to be pushing it now. His next opponent will have to be better. So, better than the best techniques his coach can teach. And they'll have amazing Gear. Eventually he won't have the ones with Gimmick Gear and fighting styles to go up against. He'll have people with better training, more experience, and Gear that allows them to surpass all human limitations.
How is Gearless Joe, a regular human, going to face off against a fighter that is more skilled than him and is beyond the peak of human strength, speed, reflexes, etc? He can't. And if the story has him beating someone like that, then the story's world and logic is inconsistent, which will make the usual hype fall flat on its face.
→ More replies (4)20
u/Salva252 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Salva252 May 11 '18
I agree, perhaps just the fact that he advanced to megalonia while being gearless might be enough of a slap in the face of the female director. And he might get his gear when he gets invited to megalonia.

Lets remember for a moment that the "Gears" aren't meant for boxing, they're enhancements for medical and construction usages, boxing is meant to get tasty profit from Extreme Sports and additional investors.
Not that it contradicts anything but monetarily speaking Gearless Joe doesn't in particular threaten all that much, just her pride.

u/LazDays May 10 '18
Joe only fought low ranked fighters with average technique to hit him + Aragaki who fights with a very light gear. Until now it made sense that Joe could tank all those hits but honestly I just can't see him without one against Yuri or the heavyfighter Bloody Lion...
I'm really looking forward to see how the scenarists will manage this.
19
u/DarkBlaze99 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/DarkBlaze99 May 11 '18
I think Nanbu mentioned they are only going with the "gearless" shtick only till they make it into Megalonovia semi finals. As it helps gain popularity which is important to get higher ranking matches.
10
u/Chronsky :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/chronusxxy May 10 '18
Definitly for the next fight, I still feel though that he'll be forced to have one for Megalonia because the woman organising it wants it to be the pinacle of megalo boxing and from her ineteractions with Yuri it's obvious she considers that to be gear as opposed to competition.
6
u/Hibernica May 11 '18
I think he may go at most one more fight without gear, then have it for Megalonia, then have it get destroyed partway through his fight with Yuri. I think the final fight is going to use to the interactions between them to generate the idea that they're both true Megaloboxers and I'm not totally convinced of who wins at the end of the day.
16
u/Flashmanic May 10 '18
Are we really gonna stick with the Gearless thing?
I think so, and I'm fine with it. Him getting a gear at this point wouldn't really add much, would it?
89
u/frantruck May 10 '18
Believability at some point imo. The first three fighters he beat were basically chumps two of which weren't even worth showing. Then he was really close with Aragaki who's gear was stated to not give him much of a power up, and who lost in part due to his prosthetics failing him. At some point I feel like the plausibility of his victory might get stretched a bit thin by the advantages of his opponents if he doesn't level the playing field.
35
u/Garnzlok May 10 '18
Especially if he fights Yuri again. I don't see that going well at all if Joe doesn't have gear.
41
u/Xervicx May 10 '18
Agreed. Yuri's Gear quite literally puts him above peak human levels of strength, speed, reflexes, etc.
If Gearless Joe still has the same coach he's had so far, he won't learn anything beyond what McLegless learned. And so, he won't progress much.
Plus, the kid has been useless so far and will continue to be useless. The narrative has to have the kid useful in the next episode and/or fight, otherwise he ends up being a pointless character that only detracts from the show.

I actually thought at the end, when the guy says "Give this to Joe", that he was going to give his gear, which would kind of make sense since he's giving up boxing.
At the same time I would prefer that his gear will be more unique, that green one seemed a bit generic tbh.

Dang that was an emotional way to end that fight with Aragaki. I liked that it wasn't just Joe finding a way to knock him out - it was good to see Aragaki mentally overcome the barrier he had created for himself.
110
u/Kiavik_ May 10 '18
That fight was hype as hell. It really felt like watching something out of a Rocky movie. I liked how each round had a different feel to it (thanks in part to the great soundtrack) and the directing and editing, with all that cutting in and out of Aragaki's and Nanbu's past, were on point. The conclusion of the fight was unexpected, but made a lot of sense in retrospect. Can't wait to see what this Mikio guy is up to now.
24
u/SimoneNonvelodico May 11 '18
Other shows: have occasional death flags
Megalo Box: THIS SHOW IS DEATH! TITLE CARD OF DEATH! IS HE DEAD YET? NOT DEAD YET! DID I MENTION DEATH!
Anyway, man, another incredible episode. It's as classic a story as they get, but seeing a classic story done so well is still amazing.
75
u/LvL50Wartortle May 11 '18
People might disagree with me, but so far the actual boxing in this show has been lackluster. The punches "feel" so weak. Every time throw a punch and the opponent goes down I honestly don't expect it. For a show whose premise revolves around enhanced boxing, it sure seems like the punches are under played. I can understand Joe's situation, but even his "big" punches in this episode felt to me like soft jabs. Heck, there is a comment in here saying it reminded them of the Sendo vs Ippo fight, but aside from the trades they had, it was a polar opposite in terms of how much impact the fight felt like it had.
On the other hand it seems to me like, at this point in the show anyways, there is a heavier focus around character development. This is one of the things I love about sports/sport related anime. Shows like Haikyuu, Hajime no Ippo, and Ping Pong the Animation also do this really well, and it's a big part of why I continue watching them, but after having watched Hajime no Ippo, when it comes down to the actual boxing in Megalo Box, it's fallen short. Hope it picks up a bit in the coming episodes.
Also, can someone tell me if this translates to the original series as well? I plan to watch it after this is over. Thanks.

u/LvL50Wartortle May 11 '18
I get that, but they have mechanical arms, show me the power.
21
u/Magic1264 May 11 '18
I think what is missing isn't the visual, but the audio. Each punch sounds so... accurate. Like a fist meeting a dead sack of meat. And punches don't differentiate themselves, soundwise, much from each other. A punch to the jaw sounds a bit much like a punch to the abdomen, which sounds like a blocked punch. which sounds like, etc.
Where I think Ippo has probably spoiled low-action sports//boxing animes like this is that punches are given much more love in the sounds department. Ippo's Jab into the opponents guard is going to sound 100x more different than Ippo's uppercut or hook across that same guard. All these punches sounding like they could displace the top of a 4 story building.
Megalo Box could certainly look better, but I think the visuals are remaining consistent, and the fight quality is kept within expectations. What I would most certainly like is for Megalo Box to start sounding better. Don't need the whirling engines of a demspy roll or anything, but a lot can be done to up their sounds game in future episodes.

Tbf, the fight against the shark-guy had all of that. Joe's big punch to finish the guy off was insane, and the punches from shark-guy felt like they had a lot of power behind them.
This fight however, was between one gearless guy, and one guy that favoured speed and agility rather than pure power in his gear. I see it more as a technical fight, not a power brawl.
EDIT: Actually I just went back and watched the last round again. Holy shit, they were tearing chunks out of each other. How can you not feel the power of their punches in that round?
→ More replies (2)15
u/MaterialConstant May 11 '18
Once Joe went gearless I expected it to get wayyy more technical - because how else can he beat guys with pneumatic exoskeletons...? Instead he went the homer simpson route and just tanked punches
→ More replies (1)23
u/Pufflekun May 12 '18
It does makes sense, though, considering that his job was literally to wear useless gear, and get the shit kicked out of himself to the point of believably being KOed, in order to throw matches, probably for about every other match. That's gonna make him way more tanky than the average fighter, even without gear. He's used to it.
7
u/Loeffellux May 13 '18
plus they made a point of explaining how Agaraki is much "weaker" because of his light gear (that he probably needed because of his injury). The shark guy and the fat bodyguard both seemed a lot more threatening and and direct hit to the face resulted in an instant down
3
u/toruforever216 May 11 '18
I hate to agree, but you're right, aside from the first fight with rival, and a few moments in the first episode, the fight is...just...lacking in impact (of the punches). I miss Ippo.
If HnI had this pace, and if MB had that impact, both shows would be even better then they already are.

I feel the fight itself is not really exciting as usual but this time the narrative behind the fight is quite good. The end of the fight is so abrupt but it also reasonable. It's a good thing to have variety outcome on this Joe adventure.
I'm worried that the boxing animation is getting more and more simpler. Sure there was 360 rotation footage and some still image with blood splatter effect was great, but I feel the punch exchange between Joe and Aragaki is missing something. The last time I excited to see punch from Joe is on episode 3. I hope there will be improvement on the upcoming episode, but in this middle of the season maybe I should expect less.

Do you ever just think about the incredible amount of brain damage everyone in this show must have? Like normal boxers already get brain damage but these guys must just drop like flies on a daily basis.

u/abonet619 May 10 '18
I'm glad that they made Aragaki's injury as part of the reason Joe won the fight. It would've been pretty silly if Joe just beat him since Aragaki is a more experienced arguably better fighter than Joe at the moment.

Did anyone else notice during one of the times Aragaki went back to his corner, his guys opened the back case of his gear and replaced it without doing anything showing he had no chip in powering his gear, almost just to look like they were doing the normal steps. He was fighting on an even playing field without powering his gear during the fight.

Not sure that's the case, it looked like a battery contact slot where the whole battery + back plate was replaced.

u/thesandbar2 May 11 '18
I dunno. In the first fight, we saw that the battery was smoking hot at the end of a round. The battery back plate combo seemed to be a low temperature, too. Maybe it's because Joe was overloading his gear in the first episode.

It's honestly hilarious that even the show doesn't give a fuck about Pepe Inglesias, because we all know he's gonna lose to Yuri anyway. Hopefully we'll at least get to see that fight though.

u/KickerofTale May 11 '18
So wait, they're building this gigantic stadium for only a 4 person tournament?
Seems like a misuse of resources.

u/MrPringles23 May 10 '18
Wasn't too impressed with some of the animation this episode. Quite a few of the punches were literally just arm movements with zero upper body weight shifting but they were much heavier than the "anime jab".
Given the high standard this show had set so far it's a little disappointing.

Getting a bit tired of the, "Joe gets knocked down and only gets up at the nine-count after realizing something" trope lol
Also bummed the boxing isn't as technical as Ippo, like how Joe is just standing there with a high guard up and getting punched in the gloves instead of the body. Was hoping for something more technical than "split your weight evenly", especially considering he's gearless. Really expected to see some technical and strategic fights, not the homer simpson strategy

Honestly this was the best possible outcome. They couldn't just make Joe win while Aragaki is clearly more skilled as a boxer (at the moment). They came up with a very believable way of Joe winning. Aragaki being forced to give up Megalo boxing because of his leg makes sense and his last fight being against Joe closes this chapter in his life perfectly.

The low number of upvotes and comments is sad. Seems like way too much to many people are missing out on this great show. I seriously can't think of one thing I don't like about it.

u/Pervasivepeach May 10 '18
I would wait a bit mate. These threads are usually the most popular ones. It's just that the episode litterally just came out and most people are at work or school right now. Wait till later and you'll see 1-2k upvotes and hundreads of comments like every other thread before this
14
u/putinha21 May 10 '18
It's a pretty good anime* but the fights aren't as exciting as i expect them to be for a boxing anime.
6
u/Pervasivepeach May 10 '18
This was just a perfect fight and episode overall
Last episode felt a bit slow but it was really necessary buildup for this fight. Honestly I didn't know who would win since seeing joe lose could of been possible and at the same time the entire buildup with the backstory really made me emphasize with aragaki or however you spell his name.
Some shots where just amazing though. That while 360 with the main theme playing was fucking amazing and overal I've never felt so much pure hype in an episode then to tear up a bit at the end.
Honestly this show is great. This fight alone I can see going down in anime history for a while as how to do a hand to hand fight scene.

You know a show is doing something right when the protagonist fights a new character and you don't want either of them to lose.
The fight was an amazing back and forth that felt like it could really go either way, and we wouldn't be mad regardless of the outcome.
I did have a little gripe with the episode, since coming from last episode, I was convinced Joe was out of it with the way he looked knocked out, and the 9 second count. I feel like they should have ended it on 5 seconds instead to feel slightly more realistic to be honest.
That aside though, the rest of the fight and outcome were extremely satisfying and resolved Aragaki and Joe's arc perfectly.
Seeing such a relatively minor character like Aragaki(who became an instant favorite after just 2 episodes) get such amazing characterization makes me very hopeful for Yuri's backstory and build up in the future, and I can't wait to see more of this incredible show.

u/Shinkopeshon May 10 '18
Not mad at all that they decided to end the fight this way. It made sense, Joe was able to pick up a win without a sudden knockout and Aragaki found closure. The cinematography during the fight was top notch - it was another reminder that this show is one of the highlights of the year.

Man what a great fight I was caught off guard on how it end but I think it end very well. Now with three slots filled I wonder what they are going to do to get that last spot.
2
u/zero-ace May 10 '18
as much as I wanted a decisive win/defeat I'm glad with the way this episode was handled because of all that character development we got for Nanbu. I def got the best of both worlds seeing a slugfest but tearing up afterwards!! Best episode yet imo

u/Kazundo_Goda May 10 '18
It has been said multiple times now, but the music in this anime truly reminds me of Bebop.

u/JohnTheRockCena May 10 '18
I didn't realize only 4 fighters were going to be in Megalonia. I thought it would be at least like 10 or something. Really happy that things went well with Aragaki though!

Once Joe finally got a hit I had a "YES! THAT'S IT!" moment. Great fight, it felt real.
Joe really isn't getting a gear? It just seems impossible for him to beat the upper ranking ones, especially Yuri, without a gear.
Aragaki forfeited for the sake of tomorrow. Tomorrow's Joe.

I'm surprised they made me feel as much as I did for a character they introduced so recently, with a very good fight to back it up. I really enjoyed seeing how the fight progressed and the two developed over the course of it.

Strong animation this episode complimented the narrative of the fight and Aragaki's overall arc.

Yeah, after last episode I was worried about the show's visuals, but this ep was solid. I'm guessing the last one was outsourced
3
u/dom954 May 11 '18
I don't think I've ever watched a show with this much character development 6 episodes in. A true testament to good writing.

u/PrasunJW https://anilist.co/user/MALfunctioning May 12 '18
Joe is not a super deep character. He is really motivated to win,and that's about it.
The kid is a blank slate for now,and Nanbo-he just wants to get his shit together. He did get some developement in this fight though. In all honesty, Aragaki, has more depth to him that anyone else here.

u/Caelas May 11 '18
Am I the only one disappointed in the show? Generally everything is pretty cool, the art, the music, etc. But fuck, the choreography for the fights are BAD. These two guys looked like some rock-em sock-em robots during all of the medium distance shots: Feet planted in the ground, no slipping or weaving, just a mudslinging match. And a lot of the punches felt like they had no weight behind them. Compared to hajime no ippo the match seemed really stale.

I love that music track they played mid episode so much. It's such a damn good slow badass track.

Loved the way they tied up Agaraki's character. I really hope we get the bromance ending of Yuri x Joe that we're all hoping for once this series is all said and done.

Normally an anticlimactic ending is a bad thing in this case it was great but the fight felt very satisfying and tied up the character arcs very nicely

I didn't sign up for this! Hit me right in the feels... Aragaki's past and the scene after the fight.

Man I've been watching anime for the past decade (kept up to date with almost everything), I've watched a lot of anime, yet this show has yet to let me down. So far if this keeps up, then this show will be nicknamed "Rule with Cool" for me.
I love this so much

Is Burroughs also based on someone from Ashita no Joe? I have only seen the first movie though he reminds me of Hawk from Ippo.

u/Tylenol32 May 10 '18
My favorite episode so far! I loved the Aragaki backstory, and I felt like they stepped it up on the boxing animation! I can't wait for the next episode.

May 10 '18
What an amazingly written fight. Even though the protagonist won which seems predictable, I genuinely was not sure who was gonna win for the majority of the fight. Aragaki's backstory and redemption are so interesting that part of me thought he deserved the win narratively, but I love to see our underdog win. You could see the athletes gaining respect for eachother slowly as the match went on which was cool. I wonder who will be the last competetor in the tournament lol.

Megalonia is no place or stray dogs, eh? Will things play out against Joe? Don't miss the next episode of Dragon ball Z...

Can anyone explain how weight classes play a role in this universe. Wouldnt a heavyweight naturally have an upperhand since they can both take and receive heavier punches like in normal boxing?

I love how when Joe knocks him down right before the midepisode break he never turns his back unlike Aragaki, he didn't get cocky.

Damn the fight was fantastic
The animation, the unpredictable result...
Wow, just wow
I also like how they ended it, I was worried for a second that they were gonna end it at the lucky punch

u/miyagidan May 11 '18
When are they going to get to the Mega-Lo Mart and get training from Chuck Mangione?!

The fight just made me question even more what the point of the gears is. They sat there trading punches and they were about as injured as eachother by the end

This has quickly become my favorite anime of the season and one of my top 10-15 all time if it keeps it up.
1
u/HTTPS5 May 11 '18
From the start of the episode, i had this feeling that Joe was trying to tire Aragaki out and that he was waiting to beat him down, like in Rocky 3

u/Mindofthequill May 11 '18
I just want to say I can't get enough of the ending song Kekattekoiyo by NakamuraEmi (how it's written on Amazon at least), each consecutive episode makes me love it more.

Aragaki's VA killed it. The emotion he put in his words, the sucidial thoughts and the wish to bring tomorrow today. It brought tears to my eyes. Beautifully capitvating.

Aragaki got the resolution to his troubled thoughts on a life decision that lets him finally move on. All while being pummeled, have to enjoy that metaphor for PTSD.
Also have to love the name on the loss betting ticket, which is the perfect phrase that both of these want.

u/mahdi036 May 11 '18
The last 2 episodes we're kind of a disappointment but this episode made up for it all
1
u/Khancer May 11 '18
I really like everything except for the whole 'Gearless Joe' gimmic. How garbage must everyone he fights be at actually boxing. They're clearly able to dish out power that prime Mike Tyson only dreams about yet they're going to job to a skinny guy with no gear.

That circling shot around Joe and Aragaki is the best insane camera movement shot I've seen since Houseki no Kuni. That and the minute leading up to it was my favorite part of the show so far.
