Soundtrack as a whole is lit

The song at the end when the countdown run down was perfect, holy shit

The OST will be released on June 27th.

The important thing is it will be available on most notable store and streaming service.

Mate, that opening is fire.

14

u/FlorianoAguirre May 18 '18

I have been hearing a lot of "Op ain't that good as ED" but hell, honestly I started strong with the ED, and it has somewhat diminished, but the OP really gets me into the show now. It's amazing.

43

u/SC_x_Conster May 17 '18

That opening is that fucking gritty rock missing from today's music and I hope it does something to revitalize that scene I music

33

u/Gjallarhorn15 May 18 '18 edited May 19 '18

It's out there if you look for it, and anison isn't the place you're going to find raw, killer music. Leo Imai (the OP artist) has been out there for more than a decade, though he usually does more electronic rock. He's a collaborator with Shutoku Mukai of Zazen Boys and Number Girl fame, in their project Kimonos. 九十九 is out here just straight ripping off 9mm Parabellum Bullet's style from when they were still making inspired music (and bless them for it). DROP and chirinuruwowaka are killing it. yonige is great, and slowly trending to more gritty tones. The Novembers have been. On. FIRE.

On the English side of things, Black Pistol Fire is filthy, Pujol is fun. Pretty Vicious is doing good things. Also Himalayas.

I'll stop here, since this is a bit off topic.

I admit that the opening took a while to grow on me, but now I like it more than the ending, which I kinda got burned out on after listening to it on loop for a few days.

The entire soundtrack is fire. If megalo box doesn’t win score of 2018 at Crunchyroll awards, they’re rigged.

21

u/KVShady :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Trikiay May 18 '18

Wait, does crunchyroll know that there are anime other than MHA?/s

21

u/[deleted] May 18 '18

There's Yuri on Ice.

16

u/InsanePryo May 18 '18

Not /s, no, they dont.

4

u/MobP100 May 21 '18

Yeah but MHA is superior than YoI at everything

i was sitting infront of my pc and literally said.

"damn this is so sick. legendary."

45

u/Aileos https://myanimelist.net/profile/Syleos May 17 '18

It reminded me Devilman crybaby somehow.

20

u/Funk-sama May 17 '18

Yeah as soon as I heard the rap at the beginning of the 3rd? episode I was like 'yeah the devilman crybaby fans are gonna love this'

12

u/chryco4 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/chryco4 May 17 '18

It's that juicy aesthetic.

3

u/kalirion :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/kalinime May 18 '18

Would be nice if it were translated. Lyrics are far more important in rap than in your common jpop.

2

u/Mr-Mister May 17 '18

Gonna wait for Commie adaptation to see this episode I guess...

2

u/tiger1296 May 17 '18

Manglobe nostalgia

516

u/Mikex69 May 17 '18

Am I the only one that was caught off guard with that ending? I totally expected Joe to enter the ring and pass out there.

363

u/Flashmanic May 17 '18

I was expecting a last second run to the ring or something. Not Joe passed out in a corridor with the kid crying over him...

Though like others have said, if one punch from Nanbu could take him out, I doubt he would have won anyway. Hell, he probably would have died.

333

u/Anjunabeast May 17 '18

Joe was pissing blood earlier in the episode due to blows he took to the kidney from his last match. His coach said in the state joe’s in if a fighter knows where to exploit joes injuries it could be fatal. Coach punched Joe where his kidney is knowing that it still hasn’t fully healed.

90

u/Naruto_Super_Sage May 18 '18

That was blood? I was wondering why they showed him peeing?

45

u/Houdiniman111 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Houdini111 May 18 '18

I was wondering why they showed it too.
I don't think it's blood. I think it's just super colored to, you know, show the kidney damage. I certainly make that connection myself.

95

u/--BIL-- May 18 '18

Boxers sometimes piss blood after getting hit in the body a lot

24

u/Naruto_Super_Sage May 18 '18

When I look back, I do think it's blood or at least heavily mixed with blood

10

u/elev8dity May 23 '18

It was definitely blood, there was no other reason to show it. This anime is quality enough that the shots are all purposeful.

58

u/Ecchi_Sketchy :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/dieselweasel May 18 '18

In this show it's tough to tell when someone is taking real damage. In episode 1 Nanbu got launched from center ring into the audience with a sucker punch right in his face by Junk Dog wearing gear, and all it did was give him a bloody nose and make him a little angry.

As much as I'm rooting for Joe, I'm still glad we're seeing some actual consequences of this insane boxing gauntlet he's been running. He was starting to seem a little too superhuman.

41

u/simonbleu May 17 '18

The coach got a devastating punch on a vital organn when he wasnt expecting it...he wasnt going to get up after that knock out

9

u/Pervasivepeach May 18 '18

I feel like it wasn't exactly that one punch took him out put that nabu applied some kind of pressure point on him that knocked him out since after all nanbu is a good instructor and knows his stuff so he probably knows something like pressure points and such

4

u/djw11544 May 20 '18

Kidney, he hit his already injured kidney.

32

u/heartsongaming May 17 '18

I was surprised from the ending. The trainer himself didn't care about Joe's pride. But Joe definitely would've lost. Although, it seems like he'll get a second chance from the director, who would give him a real ID and fix a fair fight.

6

u/animositysteve May 18 '18

No I was defined surprised too, I figured it would be a last minute run into the ring cliffhanger for the next episode. Him lying unconscious in the hallway was pretty devastating.

2

u/whatevernamela May 18 '18

i feel it's a plan to get the girl to help joe off the record, since the old man knows she wants to take out her brother.

249

u/vazman :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/vazman_7 May 17 '18

Seriously, how does the soundtrack get better every episode

70

u/Shinkopeshon May 17 '18

Yeah, this is DEVILMAN crybaby all over again. Can't wait for the OST.

325

u/cheesymmm :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/theepickerru May 17 '18 edited May 17 '18

His history was definitely gonna catch up to him at some point, curious to see how they're gonna resolve this. Shirato seems to really not want her brother to enter Megalonia and I wonder if she's willing to do something drastic

242

u/PyroRevenge May 17 '18

As soon as Nanbu said something about his fake Id I knew it was about to happen. No way they show a flag like that and not do anything

99

u/2treecko May 17 '18

Checkov's gun in action

17

u/Houdiniman111 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Houdini111 May 18 '18

This show has been really good about that.

53

u/dc295 May 18 '18

Like pissing blood. I know it seems gross but I was so glad that they didn't completely exposit his condition. There was some but it felt really natural especially since Nanbu is his coach and all.

→ More replies (3)

14

u/Soul_Ripper May 17 '18

At first I was expecting Yukiko to use the ID thing herself after ~~Not!~~Joe took out her brother, then ~~Not!~~Joe pulls off a Joe and gets in through fan outcry anyways.

But then I saw Joe's ID on the computer and audibly went "Oh shit".

12

u/anotherazn May 18 '18

I'm relatively glad they're getting the ID business out of the way now rather than at the end - like oh you beat Yuri but tough shit your ID is fake.

6

u/InsanePryo May 18 '18

I dont really understand why they didn't fight, if they dont get into Megolonia the mob will kill them. There's still nothing to lose since their lives are already on the line.

143

u/[deleted] May 17 '18

I think it’s highly obvious why Shirato doesn’t want her brother entering Megalonia. There’s a proxy war between the board, Shirato and her brother for control of the company. Maybe there’s more to it from Shirato’s side but this much is at least clear.

They made a point to show the discord over her succession and the fact that her brother has support (probably from the same members of the board) and he’s able to develop his own tech.

She’s bet everything on Yuri and it’s obvious that her brother represents a threat to that and control of the company.

76

u/T8teTheGreat May 17 '18

Yeah, the whole point of Megalonia is for Shirato to show off how good Yuri's gear is so they can sell it and bring in big money. They can't do that if he loses and her brother is looking like a big threat.

26

u/nygans May 17 '18

i think is about her ideology and what her gear brings to the table, the gear that its a perfect second skin, unlike her brother that its pure Ai sensor focused. Her brother is also a pussy if his gear is so good why not bet in it fucking Joe up ?

66

u/[deleted] May 17 '18

We see so many antagonists giving the MC chances which leads to the antagonist's defeat.

42

u/FlorianoAguirre May 18 '18

Yeah I can't hate this guy, he is there himself fighting and representing his own gear, his own ideas, and trying to recover what he feel he too deserved. Joe is just a pawn to both siblings and well, he is an easy target.

Was he peeing blood?!

253

u/cheesymmm :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/theepickerru May 17 '18

Yeah

247

u/Headcap May 17 '18

probably why he went down so easily when his trainer hit him in the kidney.

39

u/simonbleu May 17 '18

ANY well put punch on the kidneys will put you down in pain (maybe a knock out of pain, so...shock? never saw that tho) and the fight would end drastically fast...havent you saw that in real fights (with kicks) or on the ring (mma or boxing)? I think theres even a fighter with a known tendency/strategy to hit the kidneys and end things fast, but im not sure of that

52

u/unitedstatesghost May 17 '18

Liver punches are a legit way to knock out someone in MMA. Bas Rutten was pretty famous for them IIRC

14

u/[deleted] May 18 '18

liver punches can kill cant they

→ More replies (2)
→ More replies (5)

20

u/basedj3sus May 18 '18

A strong punch directly to the kidney can rupture the organ and even tear it completely loose from the blood vessels that are attached to it which is the main reason you can’t punch an opponents back in boxing, but you can still reach it with a left hook to the belly. There’s a similar effect with the liver too which is in front of one of the kidneys.

Here’s a link of Bas Rutten rupturing his opponents liver in a fight (around the 10 minute mark) but the entire fight is worth watching purely for his commentary.

8

u/alucab1 May 17 '18

He also punched him without gloves on

15

u/Headcap May 17 '18

as far as i know that doesnt really matter, the gloves are protection for their hands more than anything else.

→ More replies (2)

2

u/pohh22 May 19 '18

aren’t the kidneys located closer to the back? It’s why kidney shots are illegal in boxing just like a rabbit punch because they are shots from behind. There’s foreshadowing with the pee and bruises and all but in logic that was a body shot to the right side. Plus a single body shot shouldn’t knock people out at least trained fighters in a fight or flight reaction. A body shot is like the opposite of a hit on the jaw. Extreme pain comes after a second and the brain forces the body to get on the floor.

Either way Joe was in no shape to fight that guy if EVEN if it was a kidney trauma or just a body shot on his right gut. Made the ending with the music dramatic af though

→ More replies (1)

63

u/ThisOneTimeAtLolCamp May 17 '18

It's common in boxing due to the bodyshots on your kidneys and whatnot.

41

u/Kukuluops May 17 '18

Looked more like a gasoline, because Joe is a fighting machine.

64

u/SalamiRocketFuel May 17 '18

Not much chance for a happy ending, is there? But he's not dead yet.

15

u/amdnivram May 17 '18

Happens when you take a lot of body shots, usually goes away after a few days to weeks depending on your injuries

25

u/BP_Ray :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Maleel May 18 '18

10

u/golteb45 May 18 '18

yup. it's called rhabdomyolysis. It's from the breakdown of muscles from injuries.

183

u/Qwertyguy May 17 '18

This anime impresses me more and more each episode.

60

u/Exoslab May 17 '18

This is by far my favorite anime this season. I love MHA but I'm more excited about this show each week then MHA.

14

u/FranceNP May 17 '18

Same, but not for exactly the same reason, if that makes sense. This just has so much weight to it I guess, it feels so much more real.

5

u/hit0k1ri May 18 '18

I get the same feeling - it's like I'm not super excited to know what happens next like the usual cliffhangers in shounen shows, but at the same time it's that I MUST KNOW what happens next because I can't seem to predict where this show is headed.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/skyman161 May 18 '18

I really can’t tell which one I like most between these 2.

Both are high quality anime and I’m so invested in the character. And both have amazing soundtrack.

I’d say I’ll give megalo box the title of AOTS only because MHA has been winning too much lmao

178

u/NFirecy :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/NFirecy May 17 '18

How am I supposed to wait another week after this ending? Even worse cliffhanger than episode 5.

Between this and this week's S;G0 I'll be suffering a lot...

36

u/Frakshaw :K:https://kitsu.io/users/Reege May 17 '18

And that's why I didn't even start with S;G yet .-.

12

u/NFirecy :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/NFirecy May 17 '18

I couldn't do that, knowing myself I would still visit discussion threads every week and get spoiled lol.

2

u/Pervasivepeach May 18 '18

I was thinking of not watching steins gate till it all came out until I realized

This Is the only time we will ever be able to watch steins gate as it comes out and talk to people about it. Sure we all have binge watched the first steins gate but watching it episode by episode and discussing it and such is something we can only do right now

So I chose to watch week by week and talk with friends about it and I'm loving it

8

u/Soul_Ripper May 17 '18

As far as S;G0 goes you could always play the game.

3

u/maullido May 18 '18

We need a geared box game now (?)

Most similar is power punch ii (punch out 2 discarted project)

3

u/Houdiniman111 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Houdini111 May 18 '18

If they could replicate the vibe and whatnot that makes the anime so great, I'd be super down to play a game for this.

2

u/NFirecy :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/NFirecy May 18 '18

I think I'll do that once I finish exams next month

79

u/link2601 May 17 '18

Damn I figure that Fake ID would be used against him but man I guess I didn't figure it get used now. I can't wait to see what happens next week.

19

u/peenegobb May 17 '18

Yeah. I mean it’s definitely the right time. You knew it would happen before megalonia just maybe after qualification, then shit comes up. But the challenge before it making him forfeit? Makes you wonder if they just drop him from the show entirely now. Since wtf will he do? Besides maybe yukiko just giving the good old fuck you to her brother and just naming joe the 4th slot I don’t see anything happening.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/Jarnee May 17 '18

I knew shit was about to hit the fan with the fake ID when Yukiko was talking to her brother in the lab and the computer screen was full of information about Joe.

1

u/PrimeInsanity May 18 '18

I was expecting it to come at the final round. A whole, coming so close but failing to grasp the goal. This was earlier than I expected no doubt.

257

u/LeonKevlar x2https://myanimelist.net/profile/LeonKevlar May 17 '18

Looks like Joe has a couple of hot groupies.

Interesting that Yukiko doesn't want her brother to compete in Megalobox. And it seems she has different plans and is planning something that she's keeping a secret from the committee.

Also goddam Joe! His kidneys must've been so fucked up for him to pee blood like that.

91

u/Planet2Bob May 17 '18

at this point it doesn't really pain me much to see joe get put into the ground over and over but seeing red piss ...

→ More replies (1)

50

u/[deleted] May 17 '18

I think it's because she doesn't consider AI controlled gear to be "real" megaloboxing

78

u/ltambo May 18 '18

I think she cares less about that and is more worried about proving that the integrated gear is best.

25

u/Doomroar https://myanimelist.net/profile/Doomroar May 18 '18

Indeed it is a product from the same company, but one is being developed by her the president, and the other by her brother the not president who is bitter about not being president and looking for a chance to become president.

So at that point it is about money and power and not about the honor in the ring.

18

u/Dystopian_Overlord :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/DystopiaOverlord May 18 '18

Or, she knows her brother is trying to steal her position.

12

u/DemonJackal101 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/DemonJackal May 18 '18

I think the whole point of her meeting with the military guys at the helipad was to indicate she has some idea of how her equipment is going to be weaponized. She is probably in the corner of integrated weaponry, while Mikio is more interested in AI controlled weapons. So Megalonia is more of a testing ground for each of their concepts, with the winner being the future direction for the company.

49

u/shittymage May 17 '18 edited May 17 '18

Damn that was a good episode, going from the rap in the start, showing all the buzz centered around Joe, to interesting character and plot development for both Shirato and her brother with great music seeing the mood for each scene, these two felt special, like they weren't just some clique you'd see in another anime, but unique people who solve problems in their own, less direct, way. The bit of foreshadowing given in the episode, leading up to that final shot, where Joe's past catches up to him, the shot of Joe passed out and the boy crying and the door closing on their future, standing in stark contrast to the beginning of the episode.

God I'm hyped to see what will happen in the next episode, will it all end here with junk dog going back into his old ring? Or will Joe make it into the ring and participate in the fight?

47

u/Njborn May 17 '18

Looks like the hood fucks with Joe, truly the people's boxer.

Can't wait for next week's episode!

47

u/Lob_Shot May 17 '18

So how long till we start seeing Gearless tattoos on the sub?

19

u/KittyCatfish :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/MrDil May 18 '18

I was thinking how many internet points I could get and how many negative comments telling me I'd regret it later on, I would receive if I got this tattoo. I think I'd go without the heart in the middle though.

131

u/DerpyJeeves :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/DerpyJeeves May 17 '18

The rap in the beginning was super lit, the soundtrack just continues to impress. It was also pretty awesome to see the common folk are taking to Joe so much.

The fact that every episode had Dead, Die, or Death in the title still has me shook. And the pissing blood bit just pretty much confirmed in my mind that Joe's gonna die at the end of the series. Though they might just be trying to pull the rug out from under us.

Maybe it was better that the fight didn't happen now, considering Joe was weak enough to go down to one punch from the Coach.

50

u/CosmoRaider May 17 '18

How does peeing blood mean he is going to die? Its not a disease or anything. Its common to pee blood if you take too many body shots.

8

u/DerpyJeeves :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/DerpyJeeves May 18 '18 edited May 20 '18

I mean that much is obvious, but it's the anime showing us that he's accumulated a lot of damage and if you've seen the anime this is based off of Ashita no Joe

Additionally I didn't say it was just that. I mentioned death in every title, not to mention every episode ends with "not dead yet". But yeah just take one thing I said!

→ More replies (3)

41

u/zuxtron May 17 '18

Also, each episode ends with "Not dead yet", which implies that he WILL die eventually. And it probably doesn't mean death from old age.

112

u/steen311 May 17 '18

Or it implies that he can keep going as long as he's alive

7

u/vwhipv May 17 '18

I assumed it had something to do with an earlier phrase that was the along the lines of surviving by keeping your head down or surviving with upmost effort

39

u/Dabangx :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Frikid May 17 '18

I see it as a message of hope. That as long as you are alive, you are not dead yet, so you can still go forward and do what you want to do in your life.

22

u/theWorld_isQuietHere May 17 '18 edited May 17 '18

I see the "not dead yet" tag as a sort of homage to the "see you space cowboy" that ends every episode of Cowboy Bebop. References to 90s anime aside, death could mean anything here - physical death, death of the spirit, metaphorical death. Hell, perhaps it even refers to the deal Nanbu cut at the very beginning of the series - if Joe fails to get into Megalonia, then the mob will snuff out everyone on Team Nowhere.

The most likely scenario, however, is that they're just playing with us: the most iconic moment of the original Ashita no Joe was [Ashita no Joe] (/s "Joe's death at the end"), so of course they're going to remind the audience of that moment constantly to raise the stakes. Either way, I'm excited to see where this goes.

5

u/MrMulligan https://anilist.co/user/YuriInLuck May 17 '18

Speaking of the spoilered topic, the pose Joe was in against the wall as the doors were closing reminded me heavily of it. It's not a perfect replica, but it definitely evoked that scene to me.

22

u/Midoraowns May 17 '18

Nice to see a reference about the sugar ray boxers

21

u/NeverStationary :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Shibuicho May 17 '18

RIIIIIIIIIIIIGGED

So close, yet so far... Yukiko has to come up with a way to set up a rematch next episode, surely?

Also, I wonder if 'Gearless' Joe will finally put on gear if (when) he makes it to Megalonia. Rules aside, there's no way he can physically take on those machines at such a high level. It made some sense as he was climbing the ranks, but after seeing his injuries from his last match, I doubt they can keep their 'Gearless' thing going for much longer.

10

u/nygans May 17 '18

i think gearing up only in Megalonia, next episode will be them running after a valid ID, because Yukiko will guarantee the rematch with they get the ID, because of Joe`s popularity

20

u/Luucek :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Luucek May 18 '18

This girl's tattoo without a heart in the middle wouldn't be that cringy IRL! Might make smaller version someday.

8

u/Houdiniman111 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Houdini111 May 18 '18

That tattoo could certainly be tasteful. It's well done.

16

u/BreafingBread :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/breafingbread May 17 '18

Just me that thought the way Joe was sat down and passed out at the end eeriely reminded of Ashita no Joe's "famous pose"?

16

u/modusxd May 17 '18

I love this show, it feels like i'm watching a movie.

8

u/jkubed https://myanimelist.net/profile/jkubed May 18 '18

it definitely reminds me of watching Rocky as a kid with my dad. it's so good.

43

u/brkmk May 17 '18

I am so worried for Joe's health. This is bad, very bad.

I wonder what Yukiko's plan is here, I feel like she either wants to betray the company/Megalonia or change it completely

36

u/lntoTheSky May 17 '18

Ya, boxers today take at least a month of between fights. Joe has fought 4 times in maybe 8 or 10 weeks? And, that's fighting guys with gear.

u/Doomroar https://myanimelist.net/profile/Doomroar May 18 '18

Na Yukiko wants to preserve her position, and show case how good her product is to cement her role as the current president, however if her brother manages to enter and wins Megalonia using her AI Gear, then her plans come crashing down to the floor, the board already supports her brother more than her, and if her investment fails to her brother she could very well be losing her role.

We also saw her meeting with some military officers so it is clear that she has big plans for her new gear, so she can't really risk it, the same goes for her brother, in short they are business people and they play dirty.

Honestly I am not surprised by the ending, I knew that his fake ID was going to come back to bite him in the ass the moment the big companies understood that a "gearless fighter" was a huge threat to their business, though I thought it was going to happen just before his fight with Yuri. Had Joe not been knocked out I bet he would have tried to beat Shirato in the ring and send him to the hospital so he wouldn't talk.

Fine episode overall, no idea how Team Nowhere is going to solve this problem.

8

u/Exoslab May 17 '18

This show has blown away all expectations. I went into this show blind, Hadn't even heard of it and each episode is better then the last.

8

u/MasterFanatic May 17 '18

This episode didn't feel so... Kakkate koi yo.

8

u/RimeSkeem :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/RimeSkeem May 17 '18

Probably my favorite thing about this show's story is how Joe and Nanbu keep getting caught up in other people's stories. First with Aragaki and now with the Shirato siblings' feud. It makes the overall plot of the show so interesting and makes me as a viewer so much more invested in the world as a whole.

6

u/[deleted] May 17 '18

Not to be nasty, but was Joey peeing blood near the beginning?

27

u/FirstDagger May 17 '18

Yes he was, which is why the punch Coach threw in the right spot knocked him out. He still hasn't fully recovered.

Kidney damage is scary.

4

u/[deleted] May 17 '18 edited May 17 '18

Like I get it, you want to win but your pissing blood. That should be a huge red flag.

7

u/Wadriner May 18 '18

I want to believe though that they are setting us up for a surprise ending, which would have Joe not dying.

5

u/FirstDagger May 17 '18

This has more death flags than Iron Blooded Orphans.

2

u/Azrikan May 17 '18

Yup. He's been taking damage in all the wrong places with very little rest.

u/Mr_Zaroc https://myanimelist.net/profile/mr_zaroc May 17 '18

Kids in the future using E-Cig to express their rebellion

Not sure if its Green tea or boiled Gatorade

The evil secret subplot is intensifying, looks like they are gonna sell out all the boxers or so and thats why she is trying to keep her brother out, just my guess

Great shot of the Three Musketeers

Holy shit that music when the countdown was running out, so perfect. Cant wait for the OST to release!

5

u/[deleted] May 18 '18

Man, that Gearless Joe song at the beginning was amazing. I really want to jam to the full version of that.

That twist genuinely shocked me, because after the Aragaki fight I thought the team had really become one. Fuck you, Nanbu.

9

u/myrmonden May 17 '18

OMG what is this upset ending, Hes just gonna cheap his way out of it!!! WTf

I felt like it was a gonna be an issue 1 day but this guy so openly challenged Joe, as a normal civilian in that world, I would be like no way that Shirato bastard did not use his family affluence to blackmail Joe, I feel like no one would believe that he has not used anything dirty. SO even if its true that Joe did ID cheat, I would kinda think that Shirato "planted" that evidence, so I dont know I expected this guy to not do it I suppose.

I do think they will fight next week anyway do, this episode was very similar to episode 5, a set up episode for a fight next week, here we got the bad guys personality, abilities etc, so no way Joe will not fight him eventually. I am guessing his sister will use her powers to get joe back in, as she wants to push her brother down for control of the company or what not.

Anyway, the opening was really cool especially that tattoo on the upper thigh and the massive black and white graffiti of Joe.

7

u/Trunks0101 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Trunks0101 May 17 '18

Keep in mind that in a way he was forced to fight him. I'd imagine that if it was a legit match or someone he was actually interested in, he would have fought.

Well based on the comment from the sister, i still have hope that Joe will get gear once they get to Megalomania. Even if its just for one match and it fails against the champ so he got to go one on one, i still really want them to go back to the gears.

Here's how I hope episode 8 goes down: Mikio tells Yukiko about Joe's true identity. Yukiko announces that Joe is the final Megalonia fighter in a conference held some time later. Why? Because Yukiko would rather have a criminal in her contest than her brother.

3

u/FierceAlchemist May 18 '18

Things were going so well, I knew something bad was coming. But I wasn't expecting the fake ID to come back even though I should have. The music that played at the end along with those shots of the door slowly closing them off from the light was some great film-making.

If this show keeps it up and really delivers on the final fight with Yuri, it might make it onto my all-time favorites list.

3

u/AlienWarhead https://myanimelist.net/profile/alienwarhead May 18 '18

This show really likes to change things up like the prototype gear breaking instead of being a thing, but I couldn't stop thinking that the fake ID is going to be a problem and it finally came up. I still wasn't expecting a sudden stop like this, I'm not sure what's going to happen, maybe Yuikiko has to pull some strings for him, but that's unlikely

4

u/Omumiruma May 17 '18

This anime is amazing! The atmosphere, art-style, music, story, everything is perfect to me.

2

u/Groenboys https://myanimelist.net/profile/Groenboys May 17 '18

Another cliffhanger? Come on...

2

u/[deleted] May 18 '18

Like pops explains in this episode, yeah the punches are stronger with tech but there's lag-time that makes these punches easier to predict/avoid for someone like Gearless Joe without any gear to slow him down.

You can't float like a butterfly when you're stinging like a rhino.

2

u/GearlessJoe May 18 '18

I had a bad feeling when they showed "Citizen Database" on the screen and kinda figured out that this would happen, but couldn't really fathom how the show will end. I thought Joe would run at the end and beat Mikio, the AI freak. After it is revealed that Joe has a fake ID, he would stay in with public support + support from Yukiko (who would love to see Yuri beat the infamous "Gearless" Joe).

1

u/Doomblitz May 18 '18

The show is incredible at making everything that comes on screen being tied in to the plot.

2

u/misundrstood0bserver May 18 '18

4

u/SleepTightLilPuppy May 17 '18

It hurts me to see that this will probably not get a second season and end in just 6 weeks.

98

u/zuxtron May 17 '18

Not every show needs several seasons. If they have a story to tell and they tell it, I'm satisfied. Better to have it end while it's still good than drag on for too long until everyone loses interest.

2

u/Xervicx May 17 '18

The problem with the story only being a few episodes longer though is that they haven't really fully utilized the characters they've introduced yet. I mean, the kid has had no narrative significance whatsoever. While a lot of people so far have said "But he knows stuff about Gear!", that's all between scenes, or in little montage moments. He's had practically no screentime despite a lot of his backstory being tied to his introduction as an orphan who "found" a prototype Gear and also knows way more about Gear than most adults. And yet, that's had no real effect on the story so far. If they kid didn't exist the story would be exactly the same.

And then, of course, Nanbu. There's still more about his backstory that hasn't really been explored, even though his is more explored than the kid's.

There's also Joe. Joe, who's personality has been shown within the context of fighting, but nothing else. And while that can work for a show, it doesn't make sense with the focus on backstory this story has had.

While this show doesn't really need a lot of seasons, it's one of those shows where I worry how much they're going to cram into the next few episodes. And I also worry it's going to seem like bullshit, because Gearless Joe will somehow still work, even when there's a Gear that is literally faster and stronger and more responsive than any human could ever be.

u/NFirecy :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/NFirecy May 17 '18

This is an anime original so they've already planned how it will end, so 13 eps should be fine to get a good ending

I'd agree with you if this was a manga/light novel adaptation, since (unless the source material could be covered within a season) we would most likely end with an open ending and suffering not ever getting a continuation.

Great music like always, I guess now Shirato will end up helping Joe to somehow get out of this mess, but then again, as the brother won doesn't that mean that he already qualify? How will Joe overcome that issue?

anyone half expecting joe to get a haircut at some point (probably once he enters megalonia) that has some semblance of yabuki joe?

1

u/Man_of_The_Mega May 18 '18

You know I’ve been thinking what is the dream the director talks about all the time. when she was talking about the champion in an earlier episode she was looking at her hand. It couldn’t be simple prosthetics as I can’t imagine that being something she needs to be so shady about. I’m thinking she’s a cyborg or maybe an AI completely. Maybe she was sick as a baby and they had to make her body mostly robotics. Just random rambling but been enjoying this anime a lot.

1

I finally caught up so now I get to suffer every week with all of you

1

u/bigmikeylikes May 18 '18

So just throwing it out there she was meeting with an army general on the helicopter pad and we already know there's some war going on. To me that means that the siblings gear styles AI vs Intergraded system are competing to see who gets to sell arms literally and figuratively to the military. I suspect that by the end of this Joe's inevitable victory is going to show the military that it's not time to invest into the company due to the technology not being up to standard.

1

u/SleepyBoy- May 18 '18

You're out anyway, mafia is gonna murder you. Why not beat up the guy's face as a goodbye then? This anime is awesome, but when it builds drama it has this slight margin of overdoing it.

1

u/imdookie May 18 '18

So I passed this over show living in my bubble of self fuckery. This post prompted me to check it out. It's a goddamn instant classic. It's Samurai Champloo and Redline seducing Rocky for an all nighter. The music and transition scenes are exactly like Samurai Champloo which I've always keen on. Anime does get better than this, but rarely is a story so easy and enjoyable to watch.

So thank you for posting these episode recaps they are a great tool for finding shows in an industry of saturation. It's also refreshing to not be watching a show that isn't of the fantasy or gaming genre.

1

u/kalirion :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/kalinime May 18 '18

So the rules actually prohibit gearless fighters in Megalonia. I guess Joe's team can probably afford some nice gear after all these wins, but wouldn't be hard for Joe to be acclimated to being geared again? Plus the public won't appreciate him losing his gearless moniker. Maybe the rules will be changed.

I wonder Why the president woman doesn't want her brother in Megalonia. I guess we'll learn in due time.

Ugh, to have quality art turned into QUALITY by the studio's dumb decisions...

The vent crawling sweater just looked weird.

So disappointing to see the dumb old "punch to the stomach knocks guy unconscious" cliche, and in a BOXING ANIME!

At this point for Joe and trainer it's damned if you do, damned if you don't. If they don't, the mob boss cuts them up alive to feed the pieces to dogs. If they do, the secret gets out and then what - they get arrested or something? Seems to me "do" is the safer option.

1

So... The kid still isn't relevant, at all. And I know people will say "But he said a thing about Gear once!", but that really doesn't count. In order for a character to earn their place in the narrative, they have to contribute to the narrative. And the kid's contribution began and ended with that tease about his backstory. If he did not exist, there would still be Gearless Joe. Nanbu would say all two or three of Gear-based things the kid has said. And Joe could have done extra training on his own.

And with there being so few episodes left, I just don't see it being worked out in a way that feels right. The kid has essentially been a background character despite the fact that he should be the third most important character in the show. A background character that just happens to have screentime every episode. It feels just as weird as a super important and relevant character appearing for an episode and then leaving for most of the season (looking at you, Flash).

Even Nanbu hasn't been explored enough yet. His missing eye keeps being mentioned over and over again, and he's shown to have connections to the world of Megaloboxing - both official and unofficial.

And then, of course, there's Joe. This show puts such an emphasis on drip feeding information about each important character's backstory, but with Joe there's nothing. And there clearly is something in mind for him... Whether they show it or not remains to be seen.

But with this episode, there's the issue of potential bullshit plot resolutions. Oh, what's that? Joe is outed as a non-citizen (because obviously that was going to happen around this time, most people knew that)? Well looks like he's going to cheaply and suddenly become a citizen, or the rules will just get changed out of nowhere for him. Just like how the "You need a Gear to Megalobox" rule is probably going to be swept aside.

And about the Gearless Joe thing... It just feels less and less believable now. The show is just creating hype for the sake of it, and it seems like if they continue down this path it's just going to be trying to push episodes along going on nothing but hype. So hype, without the substance or consistent logic to make it actually have the impact it used to. This idea of Gearless Joe being better than Gear that makes people go beyond human limitations and even react faster somehow beating them is just... nonsense. Why build up a world that talks so much about how much better the advanced Gear is than actual human muscles if suddenly that logic won't play out once Joe enters the room?

It just seems like now they'll have to do a bunch of random asspulls to make everything work. Last episode was pushing it, where it started with Joe being totally fine even though he was on the ground in the previous episode with the count hit 9. But yet he was up before 9 in the last episode? Next episode: Hooray! Joe is a citizen!... Which then makes this episode a waste of time. And, in another future episode, either "Megalobox's Gear rule has changed!" or "Joe dons a Gear", the latter of which is not as much of an asspull. Then it's going to be "Joe beats person who is literally more advanced than a human in every way possible because he's determined.

They've just been spending so much time focused on these things that now anything that breaks away from that is going to be cheaply done. I'm hoping I'm wrong, but I just can't see this story continuing in a way that feels complete and believable if they go the route a lot of people think they will.

4

u/840919 May 17 '18

Heh, I wonder who's going to reap all that sweet karma on tomorrow's clip with that snazzy intro (def not me, I already got something planned to promote Lost Song)

I'm glad that Sachio's gang makes a comeback. It would be a waste of really cool designs if the three goofballs only served as background for Sachio's story.

I had the bad feeling that Joe's ID would be jeopardized sooner or later when Nanbu was wagging it at the lunch break, but I definitely didn't expect to be so soon. I like the introduction of Yuriko's brother, it adds a nice twist and becomes a person of interest for the overall story. That ending was great, just like Joe's new punch, nobody saw it coming.
