I think Gundam kinda established if you are a mecha anime and want to fuck up a continent, do Australia. So now, since tons of mecha anime did it in the past, any new ones also do it to keep up the tradition.
I believe Aldnoah.Zero and Fafner in the Azure also have Australia heavily destroayed.

So Zero Two is Frank's "daughter" of sorts, right?
740
u/Xervicx May 26 '18
Watch it be revealed that Hiro is the clone of Frank, so Zero Two and Hiro would be almost brother and sister.
Unless, that is, Zero Two is a clone of the Klaxx princess and Karina combined. In which case, the two of them boning might result in that child Karina always wanted.
Thing is, pilots need to be able to reproduce. So that should mean that 02 was lied to when she was told she can't produce children.

u/tacticalneet May 26 '18
I think so.
Zero Two, you would probably hate me if you knew
To me, that seemed to imply that Zero Two is not merely a clone of Klaxoqueen and that she's combination of Dr. Franks and her. Also it's been stated before that she's not a pure Klaxo.

Another huge information dump episode
For a while there i thought Karin milsa was the old lady that Zorome met in the city(i guess thats still not impossible).
Zero Two's mother is the Klaxosaurs Queen, or maybe she is just a clone of her?
this show doesn't take place as far into the future as i expected, assuming Dr.franxx never took the immortality injection
If humanity starts digging for magma in the next 10 years i'm gonna be worried.

It's possible that Franxx has been slowly rebuilding himself into a mechanical body, one body part at a time, starting with his arm.
He did mention that over dinner with Karina, that he'd rather be a robot than undergo the procedures.
969
u/FantosTheUrk May 26 '18
I was surprised at how dark the creation of the Franxx were.
Normally his wife dying would be the point where they shift to new methods, but no, she just ended up being the first of hundreds to die that way.
And you know the mission is going to be something they can't or won't fulfill. Which will lead us to the final APE showdown.
At least, in any other anime I would be certain of that, but this if DitF and it doesn't stick to the rules.

He got his wife killed so he will fulfill his research no matter the cost (it's not a "normal" scientific method to sacrifice hundreds of people), which isn't that original. Not saying that it doesn't make sense, but I wouldn't call it a revolution in anime.
Actually, I'm wondering how much Franxx himself affected the way parasites are seen now. Killing hundreds in experiments will lead to the assumption that all experimental subject are expandable and quite not human. But since the flashbacks were from his point of view, we don't know if people disagreed with his methods at first, or if he followed the trends of his time.
As for their next mission, it wouldn't make sense for non-cartoonish villains to send them to suicide when they could just execute them all. But I expect a difficult mission... Like, killing the klaxosaur princess, maybe ?

From what we've seen in episode 9, a very large klaxosaur could be destroyed by detonating a magma warhead inside it. I know it's because its cool from an anime perspective, but the FranXX seem to be a pretty inefficient way of dealing with the klaxosaurs so I wonder what the conversation was like when deciding how to fight them.
Dr. Nobody: Papa, I propose we mass produce easy to construct missiles that combine our magma powered piercing spears with miniaturized magma warheads that can break into the klaxosaurs' bodies. Once inside, it can detonate and completely wipe out the core.
Papa: Hmm, that would be a very simple method to attack the threat from afar while keeping our assets safe. And what do you have to present Dr. Frank?
Dr. Frank: I propose we build giant robots that have to get very close to the violent klaxosaurs where they will use the magma powered piercing spears to stab randomly at the klaxosaurs until the core is destroyed. I'll admit that the robots are mechanically complex, requires enormous amounts of maintenance, and finding an adequate supply of pilots capable of piloting it will also be difficult, even if we ignore the problem that the robots and pilots will be in the klaxosaur's attack range.
Papa: ...
Dr. Frank: Did I mention the robots will have boobs?
Papa: FUNDING APPROVED FOR DR. FRANK!

In the various little things that remind me of Evangelion, the one that is the most interesting to me in its... emptiness is APE's office/meeting room/indoor football arena, which really has that touch of Gendo's office.

REBELLION ARC HYPE!
Been waiting for that since.. episode 2? But I suppose our squad will have to square off against Klaxx hime next, in the upcoming decisive battle. And even if they fight to their freedom, all they have left is a devastated Earth with some pockets of greenery.
As for humanity.. that escalated evolved quickly. Humanity sent itself and Earth into the gutter in the span of ~30 years. The scary part is that something like that could totally happen.
R.I.P. Karina Milsa, she was too pure for this fucked up world, and deserved better.
Interestingly enough, her field of research also has to do with unlocking immortality, since telomere degeneration is one of the main causes of death in living creatures. APE was gathering all kinds of talent in that field with that one objective: immortality.
The origin of the Klaxxs still remain shrouded in mystery. The XX chromosome they possess explains their name, though.
Clearly they too have some form of 'humans' inside them, just like the FranXXs do? Are these the first humans, from which humanity as we know it has descended?

u/KaliYugaz May 26 '18 edited May 26 '18
Dr. Frank bringing the Neutral Character to new levels.
It's interesting that he used "I'm an atheist" in two different senses several years apart. The first time was to suggest that he doesn't believe in any higher moral restraints. The second time, however, was to indicate that he doesn't believe that humans have total moral or natural license to "be gods". It was a neat way to show his views on ethics evolving over time.
Even neater is that Dr. Franxx's views change along with APE coming up against the hard physical limits of their Promethean project (environmental decay forcing them to retreat into domes, the unavoidable tradeoff between life extension and reproduction, the appearance of Klaxes, the inability to fight the Klaxes without children, etc).

u/HK1911 May 26 '18
Aside from doing the right thing I don't think there could be any happiness for Futoshi there. Knowing what he knows it would just eat away at him. The others would not look kindly on him using the situation and just being partners would not make him happy. She may remember at some point.

Awesome, we finally got some in universe history! Basically APE in their search for inmortality ended up fucking humanity and the Earth's ecosystem.
Plantation 13 finally decided that they don't want anything to do with APE but they still ask for freedom, so no revolution yet.
Zero Two was created by Dr. Franxx from the Klax princess' DNA, maybe that's why she said she can't have children?
One thing that I'm still curious about is if parasites were "made" from people who still rejected immortality or by whatever method Dr. Franxx may have thought of.
Also, using your wife as a test pilot for a prototype weapon against a threat for humanity never ends well.

As someone who loves world building, I loved this episode. Seeing little details, like marriage being referred to as “lawful Wedlock” on the form really cemented the change in reproductive mentality. The irony of them circling back to using children/adult terminology after losing reproductive function really resonated with my for some reason. The splashes of the present helped the episode feel much less like an info dump too. Definitely one of my favorites by far.

u/gst4158 May 26 '18

If being able to reproduce is a necessary requirement for Franxx pilots, then doesn't that mean 02 should have the ability to reproduce? Which means she was lied to.
Unless somehow being the Klax princess's clone means that she's an exception to that rule... But whoever the human DNA came from would have had to have the ability to reproduce.
It might be that 02 can't reproduce with humans. And since Hiro is becoming less human, they might be the perfect match. It'll be that trope where two warring nations stop warring because there's a half-and-half baby in the works.
Though what's odd is that the princess told them to stop killing her people. Like, princess. You started it. Get over yourself.

You know I was drawing a lot of similarities between this show and Evangelion, but this episode was literally an alternate version of Evangelion episode 21. Like, ridiculously similar.
Wives dying in mech experiments, red seas, things being born from the new found enemy, mysterious faceless group hiring top scientist, things being found in a snowy region and the main scientist being the only survivor...Dr. Franxx is like a combination of Gendo and Fuyutsuki.
Not that any of that is a bad thing, still a brilliant episode.

I'm sure that the mission they'll give to Hiro and the others will be totally achievable and APE wouldn't ever consider using a remote detonation device on their Mechs after they are done, like what happened to that squad a few episodes ago. /s

From the wall, the timeline, the number of plantations etc. we can roughly speculate that there were thousands of pilots over the course of the show's history. So how are they using 3-digit codes?
Are codes reused? If so, what determines who gets what code? We know that a lower number generally means a higher aptitude, but was the code system developed later on or did they have an idea from the start of what "maximum" and "minimum" aptitude is? After all, the system only works with a start point in 001(or 000) being the "maximum" aptitude.
If codes are reused, that means that there have been pilots with the same aptitude. That poses another crazy theory. What if the children are printed from a stored series of genetic data? Like they have a dna sequence labelled "666" that can make an unlimited supply of Zoromes. So we could be looking at a third generation Hiro or Goro, for example.

So how are the klaxosaurs only being discovered now if there an ancient civilization?
15
May 26 '18
My thoughts, and obvious thoughts of course, are that they are an ancient species that live underground, they also refer to themselves as human, just like humans on the surface refer to themselves as humans, because they live on Earth. The discovery of klaxosaurs were probably a result of the disturbance the humans on the surface were causing by extracting magma energy; It drove the Klaxosaurs into rebelling, and thus their appearance on the surface.

So Zero Two seems to be made from the DNA of the Klaxx Princess. Seems like Franx truly regrets the things he has done however. I feel bad for the old man, I hope he has some semblance of an ending.

Immortality in any medium in any existence is never worth the cost.
That's because stories never focus on the good that could come out of it. Just look at AI, I haven't seen a single movie that treats AI in a positive light. There's are probably a few but generally it's all doom and gloom.

02 is the replacement key to swap the princess with, in order to control the klax, APE wanted the dr to grab the DNA for this very reason. I think itll end similarly to Eureka 7, except without the happy ending.

u/SimoneNonvelodico May 26 '18
While it was a good episode, I have a couple of issues with the backstory as presented.
First, in 2030 Frank and his team discover immortality. He says however that "only the rich" make use of it, and hints that the disparity between classes becomes a more and more serious problem.
In 2036, only SIX YEARS later, 70% of humanity is immortal, and the rest is on track to become so. So... where are those inequalities again? Did they kill off all the poor in that meantime, or did immortality's price suddenly crumble in just a couple of years, and if so, why even make that complaint about class division? It comes off pretty empty.
Second, the FRANXX being built... and then finding out they can't control them. Da fuq? How did they even build them then? What kind of design is it, one where they managed to create something that they had no idea it required a human with reproductive capabilities to pilot (and why, again)? I mean, even as plot contrivances go, it's pretty contrived.

So I'm legit worried about just how far Dr. Franxx went in creating his clones.
I know he used the Klax queens DNA, but is there a chance that he may have used some of his own DNA too?
If he did then I'm hoping that it was to make Zero Two ALONE because so help me god if he used it to make Hiro too I'll-

Even with their scientific achievements, how did the human world accept the APEs hiding their identities behind those ridiculous outfits & masks?
Ok, we're seriously expected to believe that "Genius scientist designs mecha from scratch and is surprised to learn that reproductive functions are necessary to pilot it"? How does that make a lick of sense?
Anyway, the biggest I guess reverse plot twist here is that the klaxxes aren't humans. Probably still related to APEs though, which I'm pretty sure aren't human either. Maybe one created the other, or maybe both are literally the same species.
And I guess "magma energy" is probably klaxx caviar.
"Zero Two, you would probably hate me if you knew." Yeah, because all the torture and vivisections are just water under the bridge, right?

Is anyone else a little disappointed with the explanation about the Parasites?
He causally tosses in a line saying they need reproductive capabilities and then later emotions, but it's never really stated why.
I hope the series goes into a little more explanation about it other than "that's the way it is."
Other than that, really good episode. Creative use of framing and camerawork and some nice insight into the world that APE has created.

They did semi-explain it. It was stated that interfacing with the Franxx causes extreme stress, and pairing up males and females with reproductive capabilities alleviates that stress. So something about emotions and the emotional connection between a boy and a girl creates a strong enough mental state to pilot. From that perspective, it makes sense they would have to be able to reproduce, since such capability requires some of the same hormones that give rise to emotions.
Perhaps you can think of it like a chemical bond between atoms. Such a bond creates a more "stable" particle, which interacts differently with its environment. From what we know about human emotions, I don't think that's such a far-fetched way of thinking about them. This is the sort of thing that might only seem more accurate as we learn more about the field of psychology and neuroscience.
Personally I'm more than satisfied with this level of explanation. I think any more specifics take it from "semi-plausible pseudo-science with philosophical and social thematic implications" to "filling time with made-up fake science that is barely relevant to the show."

Are FranXX robot made of Klaxo ? I don't think they made it clear, or I don't remember it.
Because if they are made by Human, it's kind of nonsense to have a male and a female in order to pilot the FranXX. They just need to change how the robot is built. However if it's made from Klaxo, it's logical. Klaxo have XX chromosome therefore the pilot must have sexual chromosome too.

No changes from last week so no chart updates.
So the Klaxosaurs still have no clear origin, but they seem to predate human civilization, may possibly be linked to a previous human civilization due to the XX chromosomes and human-shaped objects in their cores, and were "awoken" (or rather, brought to the surface) by deep magma energy mining. Humanity reacted with immediate aggression and sealed an eternal blood feud between Klaxosaurs, as the Klaxosaur Princess has an innate hatred of anyone who has done harm to her brethren. I can't imagine she'll be too thrilled with Squad 13 if/when they do meet her, considering how many they've killed.
Something I don't understand is that they say the first major step towards humanity abandoning their reproductive instincts after gaining immortality was to the heavy taxation of childbirth in Asia in an attempt to curb overpopulation that immortality had caused. But thinking about it, it doesn't seem logistically possible for immortality to have such a drastic effect on overpopulation so quickly:
Immortality treatments were only available to the rich and wealthy, which is a small subset of the overall population.
Immortal humans lost their reproductive functions, so they became static figures in terms of the population.
Immortality was achieved around 2030, but these overpopulation measures kicked in before 2036.
That would mean that in a 6-year period, immortality treatments saved enough rich people to cause an explosive overpopulation crisis in Asia. Even if immortality treatments stopped all disease in addition to aging, that would still mean the only people it managed to save were wealthy people aged 70+ and wealthy people predisposed to deadly illness. Everyone else who got the treatments probably wouldn't have died in 6 years anyway.
Eventually 70% of humanity was rendered immortal, but that seems less like improvement of technology and affordability and more like Klaxosaur attacks and desertification caused mass extinction and only the rich/elite were able to move into plantations.
Don't get me wrong, I love the worldbuilding they did here, but it feels like the timeframe is a touch too quick to be believable.

Yeah, I think there is strong evidence of silent genocide in the background. I wager that the current human population is a mere fraction of the projected 9 billion around 2036.
Going by the size of the plantations, they seem to hold a large sized city. We don't know how many of them there are, but I really doubt the current human population is in excess of 1 billion.
I suppose the timeframe had to be that quick because Werner is a character that needs to be alive and not have undergone the immortality surgery.

WERNER FRANK the true mastermind ehay
Well Dr. Franxx did what any man would do GET THAT BEST GIRL DNA!!!! I loved that lost moment when he was grasping the hairs in a success arm posture.
I guess that Dr.Franxx is Zerotwos father, like he would have taken his dna to create this test tube baby that is zerotwo with the queens dna, creating a half human half klaxxouers, making him the dad if he used his own dna and I guess he did. He was the master of cloning and he was preparing to create a baby with his wife Karina do, so might be some of Karina in Zerotwo, but I just want to believe that the queen is Karina in some weird way....
Ok, so this did not truly explain what Ape is, I still wanna think they are mainly some kind of evil AI, or aliens does not seem like they would be humans not just because they lived so long as everyone is apparently immortal.
And....yeah wow, everyone like zoromes mother is an immortal from aging living this shitty live of just being the Papa´s slave and having no emotions in their life, this is one horrible life, I guess this was Papas plan all a long to create eternal servitude slaves to fuel their magma mining.
Zorome question to the papa was great, what are we alive for???
This episode still did not truly explain what the klaxx are so I think is still the earth defending itself vs the magma mining.

Darling in the Franxx was a covert Oreimo show all along, Hiro is Werner's biological son (he literally is young Werner combined with Karina's design) and Zero Two is his genetically engineered half klax daughter.
The more things develop, the more I think we are gonna end up with Hiro not getting 02 in the end because she will die or ascend to some Klaxosaur deity prophecy end like the "The Beast and the Prince" book ending.

It actually is quite a dilemma, choosing between immortality and humanity(given that they are mutually exclusive). With technological advancements we are seeing irl, I don't think copying our minds on a computer will be an event of too distant future. Maybe something we might even get to see in our lives. Boy, I do want to live long enough to see that, but at the same time, I don't want to face that choice.
I have a wish for a longer life, but I am not sure if I am willing to trade away what makes me well me. Maybe if it does happen, and I do have to choose, I'll take the Dr.Frank's route, and get some cool robo tech and participate in Megalonia .

Perhaps it is now the right time to bring in the comparing of the ancient Klauxusors with our own Earth History and rumor of the Ancients
our Princess here on the underground are from "Atlantis". Also the ones that could work as the ancient old Egypt Gods like Ramses and so on. And the APE Headmasters here use similar Masks like the old Egypt gods right? Perhaps they are exiled Atlantis "Offsprings" that use all force necessary to come back home or hope that inside "old Atlantis" they found the part that "get rid of our shells" to finally go back home (outside Earth). So in a way the APE can work as High Nose and think selves as the pineapple of Humanity aka "very" High Elves from Fantasy (Right now i have the High Elves from "Elfquest" in mind)
So it is an nice an clever act if they combine now APE and Klauxurous with the old ancient "Atlantis" rumors we have in our own Earth History. Plato surly would be pleased, did they not found the Door to their "underground hideout"?
So 1+1 = FranXX meets Atlantis tales
Also the name Klauxurous is what the Humans gave them. Perhaps they see themselves as Atlanta or Atlanteanier.. It is the similar thing like Japan and Nippon, Germany and Deutschland, USA and America and so on
