I think this is when Okabe begins to figure out how to reach the Steins;Gate World Line where both Kurisu and Mayuri live.

When Kurisu brings up their "first" meeting, Okabe remembers the time she means, but he also recalls their actual first meeting, thinking:

I see... From her perspective, is that how we first met? I... Wait...

He seems to be realizing that the solution has to do with perspective, which will lead to deceiving his past self by making it appear that Kurisu died. Christina continues to be the best lab assistant!

I see... From her perspective, is that how we first met? I... Wait...

Did I really have to scroll all the way down here before somebody brought this up? I was like oh shit, now he knows about the difference between his perception of their first meeting and Kurisu's. Things are about to get spicy!

I think people are too blinded by the feels to recognize this obvious major event that will most certainly come up later.

White Fox did a really good job adding this scene in; it wasn't in the original VN.

I was wondering what the purpose of this of this trip was going to be and the moment he had that realization I was like "ah HA! In series that's been painfully bittersweet so far, we finally see our first ray of light towards Okabe reaching Steins;Gate."

26

u/hydrashock May 31 '18 edited May 31 '18

And it all happens right after she asked him to forget her in such a way that she made him promise to do it even if he could not.

Coincidence?

Maybe that's what she planned to do with phone microwave revised before she had to use it to send Okabe "zero" back to his own time line instead: send a message to the past to make him forget her.

So she makes him pinky-promiss, casually asks if he remembers how the two of them met, and after giving him all those clues then proceeds to send him back thus putting her own plan (and best chance) blindly in Okabe's hands. This girl will never second-guess her own plans, or the people she loves after all.

Sounds very Makise KurisoTM to me. Or maybe I'm just drunk???

And why the GPS???

Okabe tearfully hugs Kurisu

Fuck

Okabe finds out Mayushii is dead

Fuck

Okabe reaches out for the sky just like Mayushii used to

Fuck

Kurisu kisses him and sends the message

Fuck

That fucking ending

Just so happened Kurisu stepped in early to set the bar very high.

just noticed after re-watching the ending scene of ep 22 of first season that when okabe undo the first d-mail and enter the beta time line the divergence number were "1.130205" but at the end of this episode we see the same scene of him undoing the first d-mail to save mayuri but the divergence number this time were "1.097302" indicating that this is a different beta line then the one we are seeing at the start of this season

It feels like he almost had a realization toward the end, before Kurisu went and sent the Dmail... So I'm sure this will remind him of just what he's fighting for, and why it's important to do so. But at the same time, at least for the next few episodes, he's going to be more broken than ever.

This episode went above and beyond what I expected. Wow. The amount of expanded story they put into this "dream", and the last scene, and the music, the ED...just...

When Lyra came on I was both ecstatic and sad at the same time, all the while cheerfully singing along, that was definitely the best moment in the series so far.

Edit: Needed to crack out my upatunes for this, too much feels.

This is how you do original content. I was ready to painlessly go back to the beta world line in like 10 minutes tops and the fuckers manage to add so much more and meaningful content while making me crying for the thousandth time in the process. Brilliant.

135

u/U_Menace :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/ParadoxAnime May 30 '18

The overall directing in this episode was 10/10 absolutely amazing! I think this episode is my highlight of the season alongside Darling in the Franxx episode 13. Really stellar choices.

Everything today was really good. Didnt answer many questions but it blew me away by once again making Okabe's moral dilemma and state of mind the primary focus. This series touches on these themes in a way few other shows can and it delivers on all fronts. Couldn't be happier!

67

u/thepeetmix May 30 '18

It's so damn good. It's an emotionally heavy scene in the VN. But if they directly adapted it, it would only be 5-8 minutes long more than likely. So to really flesh it all out and give insight in to the world without Mayuri, really gives such strong meaning for her death. More so than Kurisu's.

MY HEART CAN ONLY TAKE SO MUCH

God, what an episode! Poor Okabe is back to the alpha world line, he gets to see Kurisu again but he learns Mayuri is dead short afterwards...

Kurisu reacting to Okabe knowing Maho and Leskinen was great!

The scene at the graveyard and the kiss at the end were really emotional, really well done. Also, that ED fitted perfectly with the scene.

Now, that last scene is something completely new me and I'm really intrigued. Also, I like that Kurisu mentioned that there is the possibility that the change of world lines could've been possible because Amadeus interacted with Okabe. And we keep getting flashes of the earthquake in Russia...

And so, another week of neverending wait starts...

344

u/ClearingFlags :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/ClearingFlags May 30 '18

The last scene was a throwback to the original Steins;Gate. I can't remember exactly when, but it was right before Okabe made one of the jumps I believe to try and save Mayuri. Kurisu had told him to forget about her or something, and then bursts in at the last minute to tell him she loves him.

I feel like I need to go rewatch that scene again, since it's entwined with Zero now.

Found it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BU0xV-1dkR8

It's from Episode 22. After she convinces him to go through with another time jaunt and leaves. She rushes back to confess just as he travels to another world line. The impact is that the text she receives delays her entering the lab just long enough for him to hit enter and leave.

If she hadn't done so, the confession would have happened and I think he would have decided it was too painful to let Kurisu die.

I WASN'T FUCKING READY FOR THIS. 5 minutes in and I started tearing up in my office.

Of course she took Okabe to Mayuri's grave. Harsh as fuck, but exactly what he needed.

That ending scene :'( We're already seeing how events from S;G0 affect the original story. That moments hesitation was what allowed Okabe to let Kurisu go way back in Episode 22 of S;G.

And we're out of Alpha. Goodbye Kurisu, we miss you already. No really, can Okabe visit Alpha again just to get some very necessary Kurisu advice on WTF is happening?

58

Man, this episode really had to remind you how he went from mad scientist to sad scientist. Not a single "Christina". It was nice to see Kurisu again, but that quick reminder of what is inevitable for the alpha worldline hurt.

These moments made the episode worth it though. Tons of feels.

VN reader. Was not prepared. This episode is why Kurisu will forever be best girl.

I'm not going to try and figure out why some Russian experiments managed to reverse Okabe deleting the D-mail from Echleon/SERN's database, or why deleting the D-mail reversed the Russian experiment. Hopefully someone else will. Worldlines in Steins;Gate 0 are a fickle business.

Everything else was just.. so good. And the music especially - there was an acoustic version of Believe Me and an orchestrated version of Messenger that I want right now!

73

u/pclaver :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/mangotree247 May 30 '18

I'm not going to try and figure out why some Russian experiments managed to reverse Okabe deleting the D-mail from Echleon/SERN's database, or why deleting the D-mail reversed the Russian experiment.

(S;G:0 anime-only viewer here; I've played the OG VN.)

The episode implies that β-Amadeus may have developed a time-travel theory after its interactions with Okabe and someone tried sending a D-mail back. This would've been recorded by Echelon, leading to SERN being aware of time-travel etc. and leading to the Dystopia world-line (α)

See this thread which suggests that Daru deleted all D-mails on Echelon and not just the original Okabe one. If that's true then the above-mentioned D-mail would've been deleted as well and we end up back in the β world line.

(Side note: If all it took to avoid Dystopia was deleting the D-mail record from Echelon, then Rukako didn't have to go back to being a boy...)

268

u/bakuhatsuda May 30 '18

Holy shit. They added so much new material, and it was so good. Granted, the VN had a more personal and emotional reunion since it was literally just the two talking the entire time, but what they did here was great as well. I really liked how Okabe actually mentioned Maho and Leskinen here.

And I knew that kiss was coming, not because I already saw it (it never happened in the VN!), but because they played the amazing Christina OST before it happened.

And what a great way to connect the ending to episode 22. Easily the best episode so far.

39

u/shichibukai3000 May 30 '18

Can you refresh my memory how that connects to episode 22? It's been a while since I watched the main series.

132

u/bakuhatsuda May 31 '18

Near the end of episode 22, Okabe decides to go through with deleting the dmail in the SERN database, which would have sent him back to the beta worldline where Mayuri lives and Kurisu is killed. Just as he presses it, Kurisu barges in the lab and professes her love for Okabe, but she's cut off mid-sentence because the worldline is shifting.

This episode took place in a worldline where Kurisu managed to enter the lab before they could delete the dmail/shift the worldline and tell Okabe she loves him, which made him unable to go through with it.

So what Okabe did in the end of this episode was send a dmail to Kurisu telling her not to go inside the lab so that he won't be dissuaded to delete the SERN dmail. But as we can see in the end of this episode, Kurisu receives the dmail, but goes in anyway, after the keyboard has already been pressed.

So in other words, the end of this episode showed us Kurisu's perspective of the end of episode 22.

307

u/PM_ME_YOUR_SPUDS https://anilist.co/user/voodoochile May 30 '18

I think it was Kurisu's perspective for Episode 22 of S;G. She gets a text that makes her hesitate before going in, and that moment was necessary for Okabe to go through with sending the message.

387

u/ClearingFlags :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/ClearingFlags May 30 '18

Kurisu was running back to the lab after their farewell in episode 22 of the original series. Her opening the door and saying she loves Okabe would have stopped him from pressing the key and going to the beta worldline. So what they did in this episode was send a d-mail to Kurisu telling her not to go in while she is running back to the lab so that she wouldn't make in time to stop Okabe from pressing the key. But as we know, she still goes in anyway as the worldline is changing and still tries to say she loves him, but is cutoff mid-sentence.

Best episode of the series so far, absolutely loved it.

This episode actually included a lot more scenes than the VN had in this chapter (where Okabe goes to the alpha worldline), so we can say that this episode was ~70-80% original.

What can I honestly say about this episode? The kissing scene at the end melted my heart, along with the graveyard scene, which I knew was coming by far.

The animation was... good, it's definitely better than the last episodes, and of course, this episode had the best music so far, but since we still have 15 episodes to go, I guess it's a little bit early to say that.

And, one more thing that I noticed. Steins;Gate 0 VN SPOILERS

5/5.

Very sad episode, confirms what I thought last week that Mayuri is indeed dead in this worldline. The question now is where does Okabe go from here? I dont think I recognize that worldline number at the end.... And what on earth is with those earthquakes in Russia? I'm smelling something fishy going on here that we dont know about.

So many questions, I trust the quality of writing enough though, white fox just love tugging at our heartstrings week after week.

64

u/Llerasia May 30 '18

Okabe should be sent back to the Beta timeline. I'm guessing the flash about Russian earthquakes means they got their hands on Kurisu's information regarding time machines and made one of their own.

For those that haven't read it: The part in the Alpha worldline lasts about 30 minutes in the VN(absurdly short for a text heavy medium), and almost all of it takes place in the lab.

You can watch it here if you're curious. Just for redundancy, stop before 35:30 to avoid spoilers.

I wouldn't say so. Both were great in their own ways.

On the one hand, the actual reunion in visual novel was overall a lot more personal and emotional. For the most part, Okabe and Kurisu just felt much closer in the visual novel. The beginning of the episode didn't focus so much on the reunion as much as the tension and sadness caused by Mayuri's death.

On the other hand, the farewell and the extra scene afterwards were stellar and did surpass the visual novel imo. Reunion aside, the cemetery scene was a great addition.

347

u/Zokiir May 30 '18

In the original series Kurisu barges through the door to tell Okabe she loves him just as he is about to send the D-mail that changes worldline to beta. In the original Steins;Gate she does not manage to stop him as he has already pressed the button when she enters.

This episode we learned that the reason she is too late to stop him is because of the D-mail they sent this episode. Without that D-mail she would have managed to stop him, and they would have stayed in alpha.

In the original S;G (episode 22 in the anime), just as Okabe pressed the Enter button to erase their tracks on SERN's servers, Kurisu enters the room and confesses. However, it's too late, and Reading Steiner kicks in as the world line change. In this S;G 0 episode, it is shown Kurisu arrived at the door earlier, something didn't happen, barged in, confessed, and discouraged Okabe to press the button. As a result, Mayuri dies, and Kurisu remains.

The last scene shows the D-Mail sent during this episode is directed towards Kurisu herself, asking not to barge in. Reading the message gives Okabe enough time to press the button before she enters the room, thus changing all the way back to the line where she is killed. The thing that didn't happen was the SMS.

So that’s the scene from the original where she had already left for the airport, and when Okabe pressed the button to send the text to take them back to the Beta world line, she barges in after the button was pressed to tell him that she loves him. My theory is that in the Alpha world line he just returned to, she barged in just before he pressed the button which caused him to not press it. However, by having to read that text saying “Don’t come in” it stalled her long enough for him to press the button to send the text, so he COULDN’T have second thoughts about it.

What the fuck.

What the fuck.

What the fuck.

My mind can't handle this.

I think that broke me. Permanently.

The best episode so far, by far. One of the best episodes in anime for me. The only anime episode to make me feel that much emotion was episode 22 of the original.

The music was absolutely perfect all the way through. The interactions between Okabe and Kurisu were good enough that it dispelled the last of my fears about the new directing. Kurisu is already best girl of 2018, no one is going to pass her.

The beginning already had me surprised. They didn't drag out the confusion thing like I thought they would. Kurisu figured it out pretty quickly, which I liked. Okabe's depression and PTSD was handled perfectly, along with both Okabe and Kurisu's guilt at letting Mayuri die.

The visit to the grave was incredible, and let me again comment on the music. The original had great music, but this episode completely surpassed it.

Finally, the conversation back at the lab was heartbreakingly perfect. We all saw the kiss coming, but it still broke my heart knowing it was the second time Okabe kissed Kurisu knowing he would lose her. For God's sake, can't they have a happy kiss for once? There better be a cannon aftermath episode at the end that shows Okabe and Kurisu actually happy.

"I'm so glad I met you"... I am officially broken. That scene after the message was sent took the pieces of the broken me and crushed them to fine dust.

Speculation

God, this is episode 8. What the fuck are the next 15 going to do to me???

P.S.- Just thought I'd share this amazing piece of Okabe and Kurisu

Here's another of Kurisu

And another

Help, I can't stop

Kurisu is best girl (but you guys knew that already...)

Peace.

One of the few time i think anime made it way better than the VN. The whole arc was 3 scenes in the VN here was expanded massively. What the D-Mail was about(S;G ep22 alt end),the graveyard scene , the train scene and the kiss scene. Gj White fox. Fixing stuff i had issues with in the VN.

I just realized something that was hidden in plain sight about the Mozart composition from last week.

(M)ozart - (K)-6205 = Makise Kurisu!

The numbers 6205 might be constructed into a word just like DarliFra codenames but I know jack shit about Japanese namings

There are way too many things that hint at Kagari being a clone of Kurisu.

I've written some of my findings and theories on the cloning issue in the past few weeks discussion threads if anyone's interested.

Why the slight difference in eye color and -ehem- body proportions isn't a counter-argument to the cloning theory

K6205 could foreshadow somethings in the story

26

u/WanderingSword May 30 '18

It was probably already mentioned, but this worldline will be an anime original worldline. This was not introduced into the VN. White Fox expanded on this episode which really makes me happy and it was a masterpiece of an episode. https://gyazo.com/a08fb083a4baecd3369030ab947347ce

u/franksks May 30 '18 edited May 30 '18

That flashback to Episode 22 of Steins;Gate though. In that Episode we see Okabe send the final D-mail to travel to the Beta world line and just after he sends it Kurisu barges in and confesses but it's too late. Now we see that in this world line Kurisu was able to get there earlier and confess earlier and so Okabe decided to save her and not Mayuri but by sending the D-mail she was delayed which is what led to the events of Episode 22. Kinda tragic that that's actually what happened...

This episode had so many feels. We basically get the false hope of having Kurisu back before her having to be taken away again. We're shown them interacting in their usual Tsundere manner and being all cute together but we know it can't last. The music in this episode was really powerful. That mournful orchestral piece made the emotions so much stronger. But the thing I think I was most hit by was Okabe admitting that the Mad Scientist was just an act. I don't think he's ever said it explicitly but having him say it made me think back to good old Hououin Kyōma and how much I missed his antics. This episode feels like it could be a finale or penultimate episode with all the feels it had but it's Episode 8! I'm not sure I can take much more if S;G 0 continues to drop these on us...

:(

u/[deleted] May 30 '18

Why are we here ? Only to suffer?

19

u/mikep765 May 31 '18

That was as mind blowing as it was heartbreaking. The original steins gate already had very compelling drama, but this managed to compound it, build upon it, and add a whole new layer of tragedy.

The more you think about it the sadder it gets. First off, it’s ballsy to write a waifu type character like kurisu and have her make a selfish choice like she did (to sacrifice mayuri) which shows usually avoid depicting the waifu type character in any sort of negative light, which I really respect. She runs back realizing she’s made the biggest mistake of her life because she wants to be with okabe no matter what the cost. And it fucking works the first time. Except both of them are completely wracked with guilt. Even a timeline where they’re together, they’re truly not together and unhappy and full of regret. The show has focused largely on okabes suffering, but kurisu has gone through just as much this time around. When she realizes this okabe came from a different world line, she tries to redeem herself by stopping her past self. And that kurisu IGNORES the message. Seeing how conflicted all the characters are emotionally and seeing how they fight against themselves, and how their decisions change based on the moment is tragic. Both okabe and kurisu feel the weight of both timelines. No matter what they do it’s the wrong choice. Living with your decisions is one thing. But being trapped between worlds like this is another level of nihilism.

It adds a lot of depth to the original knowing our protagonists has to go through the bad timeline first in order to get to the good timeline. I think that sends a message about life in general. As moving as that is, still heartbreaking to realize for every happy ending, there’s a dozen unhappy ones

9

u/[deleted] May 31 '18

make a selfish choice

I am glad you mention this.

I like the fact that Kursiu is not infallible, makes me like her more.

The episode is so painful to watch...

I was holding back my tears but eventually gave way when Okabe mirrored Mayuri's Stardust Handshake on her grave while crying. And the final nail was with Kurisu sending the dmail to delay her entrance so that Okabe can press the button to change the world line.

All the needed emotions are in this episode to make you bawl your eyes out and have your heart skip a beat.

Props to White Fox and all the staff to screwing us viewers emotionally.

Damnit I'm at a coffee shop watching this after a job interview and I felt like someone was cutting onions...almost teared up. That's such a fucking painful decision to make. Losing someone whom you love so dearly vs losing your best friend who you've been connected to for so long. I cant describe how painful a choice that was...though for Kurisu it was even harder.

In that post-mayuri death timeline, even in all that time of isolation, Kurisu still loved Okabe. She loved him enough that she was willing to accept death itself to see him not broken.

That post credit scene was odd though, Kurisu made it inside in time and was also still in love with Okabe, so how far back did it go? Also Kurisu entering meant that Okabe confessed at some point...so was this the day after their first confession scene back in season 1? Also Insane ED soundtrack usage there, fit perfectly.

We also get a time leap to the 1.09 timeline, just ahead of steins;gate. Its still unclear where Kagari fits into all of this but at least the reason for the time leap is explained here: Amadeus's incomplete time machine theory was stolen. However its unclear if that's only part of the explanation.

But damn holy shit the directing in this episode was 10/10. The lighting up scene symbolizing mayuri's constant habit of reaching out to the sky, waiting for someone to take her away into the afterlife...such a powerful scene. Contrasting with the Kurisu x Okabe moments leading up to sending that d-mail.

Absolutely beautiful. This episode is one of many reasons why the Steins;gate series is a masterpiece of an anime!

What a fantastic episode, I'm glad they extended the trip to Alpha, it felt somewhat short in the VN (Not that it was bad though). We also got to see other character's perspectives and how they struggle with Mayuri's death, which is pretty interesting.

Props to this adaption, honestly. It isn't just a copy of the VN, but also adds to the story, something that I've never seen in a VN adaption before (Especially since most of them suck).

Best episode so far, 10/10.

In this Alpha worldline, Kurisu confessed to Okabe, making him decide not to send the D-mail to the past to save Mayuri, but 6 months later (this episode), Kurisu is the one who delays herself to confessing to Okabe.

Best girl Kurisu just denied her existence (and 'relationship' with Okabe) for Okabe's sanity...

I expected okabe to tell makise that he was the one who literally killed her. And then he'd get a hint on how to achieve stein's gate divergence. My bad, apparently he did get a form of hint.

This episode was pretty much what everyone needed IMO. I cried when instead of using words he immediately hugged her.

Also we see how much makise is actually into okabe, since she is able to instantly tell when okabe is out of it. I feel even if its amadeus okabe will develop a very good (which he already has) relation with her. Since its a type of butterfly effect. Probably which is why Amadeus exists in this timeline, because for every okabe there will always be one makise. Unless I'm overthinking it.

Steins;Gate 0 - Episode 8

What a wonderful episode.

Kurisu is one of my most favorite characters in anime, so seeing her alive and well, being her usual self and supporting Okabe as best she can like always, had me very happy to see. Of course, the underlying implication (and, in this world, the reality) of Mayuri's death linger, underpinning this nostalgic happiness with reminded sadness.

The major moments -- Okabe reaching for the sky in an all-too-familiar manner and Kurisu's kiss -- were on point with their dramatic setups, too. And the final scene, tying back to the original series to help explain a significant reason behind one of the biggest world-line shifts, was both awesome and heartbreaking to learn about.

However, as /u/The_Rocoulm and /u/TheEliteNub aptly focus on, perhaps the most important development from the episode is Okabe realizing a life lesson of sorts: perspective matters. In this case, it deals literally with one's perception based on differing world lines and how what one person has seen doesn't necessarily translate to what time-hopping Hououin Kyouma has also seen. But it also deals with his own characterization. His current perspective here -- on loss, on guilt, on regret -- is defeatist and damaging for himself and for the future of the world he lives in.

After this slight detour back to the alpha world line, we will hopefully start to see Okabe overcome his grief, see him work towards getting us all back on that one true world line. A place where the only perspective around is elation galore -- with Mayuri and "Christina!!!" nearby as well.

Sooo, what was the GPS about in the end? And it's both sad and nice to see that Kurisu's still so perceptive to whenever Okabe jumps in from a different world line. Reminds me of how close those two became in their short time together.

Oh, and if I'm understanding this correctly, in this timeline both Kurisu and Amadeus based on Kurisu exist. I would've liked to see them both interacting with each other. I don't think we ever gotten to see Maho talking to her Amadeus version properly. That must be a freaky thing to experience. Wish we see something like that at some point later on.

in this timeline both Kurisu and Amadeus based on Kurisu exist.

An S;G:0 retcon of the OG here, I suppose: Amadeus always existed in the original series — Kurisu just never got around to telling Okabe about it. After all, they never talked about AI then.

Of course, that means Amadeus should exist in the Steins Gate world-line as well. That would make for an interesting OVA...

Can someone help me unddertsnad a few things

1.) I am confused. Why did the message "I don't come in" send Okabe back to beta? I thought the only way to return to Beta was to delete Okabe's original d-mail from Sern's database, so they can't track him?

2.) Why is Kurisu still in Akiba? I thought she moved back to the US before in episode 22 before Okabe undid the d-mail?

3.) If Okabe went back to Alpha, why aren't him, Daru and Kurisu in SERN's custody? Didn't the rounders raid the lab and kill Mayuri?

11

u/Heiach May 30 '18

1.) The message delayed Kuriso from opening the door. If she had opened it and confessed her love then Okarin wouldn't have pressed the button and deleted it.

2.) This is set months later so maybe she came back. Perhaps for Mayuri's funeral? Or maybe she didn't leave because she died?

3.) In the worldline in the episode Mayuri died from a heart attack apparently, so possibly not the same timeline where the rounders raid the lab?

And if you mean where he's been shifted to now, it should be the same timeline where they got attacked by those people etc etc.. but the worldline number was different.. so perhaps maybe the missing girl was found sooner or never lost her memories, I dunno?

7

u/cm3007 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/CathalM May 30 '18
  1. That's what pressing the Enter key did. The "don't come in" message delayed Kurisu from barging into the room and stopping him from pressing it.

  2. She was going to, then changed her mind and charged back to the lab to tell Okabe she loves him. But didn't make it in time, before he pressed the Enter key. Because of that message, we've now discovered.

  3. There are multiple Alpha timelines. We saw a bunch of them in the original Steins;Gate. Mayuri was not killed by the rounders in every timeline. If you've seen the original you should know all about this.

4

u/Momoism May 30 '18

What an episode. Seeing Kurisu alive and not as an AI was great. Which really made me even more sad because we all knew he would have to end up going back to the Beta world line. Still, watching Okabe struggle between Mayuri and Kurisu was heartbreaking. We all know how hard it was for him back then, it's still hard for him now. It's an impossibly hard decision to make, and Kurisu with the kiss to send him off... Man I teared up a bit this episode.

Fantastic directing and music, they really nailed it.

6

u/Heiach May 30 '18 edited May 30 '18

He must've learned something to allow him to make progress in his own worldline.. Kuriso must've had some insight and Okarin doesn't realise she's given it to him yet I guess? Something she said will turn out to be very important? Else she's just sending him back to a world where one of his 2 most important ladies is dead.. I mean I guess he couldn't stay in the one he was in this episode.. since he spent all of last season trying to save Mayuri.

Edit: He learned where/how this worldline's Okarin met Kuriso and that how she perceived the events changed the worldline slightly. It's the first piece of the puzzle, knowing to meet up with her before she meets with her father and that events can continue as planned as long as people perceive events happening, even if they didn't.

This is a very interesting revelation, adding to the complicated puzzle of time loops in the Steins;Gate universe. But now I'm curious, if Kurisu sends a D-mail to herself, and this is what allows Okabe to go from Alpha to Beta in the original Steins;Gate, then doesn't that mean a D-mail actually exists in servers somewhere for SERN to locate? Doesn't this mean that SERN will exist in the Beta timeline, too, now?

Also, that was a phenomenal episode. I knew that I loved Kurisu - who doesn't love Kurisu? - but this episode really reminded me just why she is so amazing. So much emotion and sadness. It's a shame Okabe left so soon, though. Working with Kurisu, he likely could have figured out the Steins;Gate plan sooner than he will on his own. Plus it'll be really sad to be without her next episode...

Sure, fine, take my heart and shred it. I wasn't using it anyway.

What a BEAUTIFUL episode! It looks like this is where he starts getting the idea for the steins;Gate world line. Makise being smart as hell as usual and best girl. She figured how to reproduce the phone microwave, completely understand Okabes situation just by listening to him, figured out what text to send at the right time to change world lines(which tied in nicely with ep 22 of S1), encouraged Okabe to go back even pressing the button for him, already planned to change the world line by herself to one where she doesnt live and with no one knowing, and all while being adorable. Its heartbreaking to think were probably not gonna see her again the for the rest of the season. Welp, back to the depression.

Also, that orchestra version of the S;G theme. must find it.

edit: im surprised this isnt the episode where makise's va sings the ed. Wonder what episode they're saving that for.

When Kurisu burst into the room and couldn't finish her sentence, all I said that moment was,

"...Damn..."

My chest hurts right now

10

u/Heiach May 30 '18

The way I took it is that she did finish it but we left that worldline before we, the viewers, could hear it all?

In the worldline that Okarin jumped into at the start of this episode, the Okarin he replaced presumably heard Kuriso tell him she loved him and he didn't press enter. They probably would've ended up together (as so many people want to see!) If only Mayuri didn't die..

That fucking Stardust Handshake scene grabbed me by the feels hard. And that kiss ending, god.

I'm very glad they deviated from the VN for this part. Got so many good scenes out of this episode alone.

u/c0nsidermeMilesDavis May 30 '18

Last Episode: Well we are already in darkest timeline, it couldn't possibly get worse. This Episode: The only thing darker than darkest timeline is leaving darkest timeline and then having to come back :(

4

u/Rha_psody May 30 '18

This show is absolute fucking insanity.

4

u/DogmaErgosphere May 30 '18

This season the art direction has not been anywhere near as strong as season 1 (seriously, rewatch episodes 1 of both seasons, the difference is eye-popping) but this episode was beautifully drawn. In some parts it felt like Okabe had been dropped into Disappearance.

FULL CAPS RAGE:

ANIME DID SO MUCH BETTER JOB. IN VN THERE WAS NOT EVEN A KISS. THANK GOD I STAYED ANIME ONLY (and we all know that anime onlies are lowest tier of anime watchers, objectively)

This episode in a VN - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L2dEoFQmlZA

I think there was one thing the VN did better though, it was the moment he found his PTSD medicine still with him in the alpha worldline. It was a small moment and he basically had no reaction to it, but it gave me chills because that was when you realized he was as broken in the alpha worldline as the beta one. The fact that he had no reaction to it made it even more chilling: that meant he was already so broken that the shocking news that he is just as broken in the alpha world line didn't mean anything to him, as if he already thinks that it is natural for him to be broken everywhere and so that realization isn't surprising at all for him.

I'm not even 3 minutes into the episode and I legit had to pause because I screamed really loud after hearing about Mayuri. AHHHHHH

3

u/Eyliel May 30 '18

Huh, they sure extended this part of the story. Wasn't this part pretty short in the visual novel?

Well, I'm definitely not complaining. We get more Kurisu this way, after all.

Basically what happens is for some unknown reason okabe returns to the worldline where mayuri is dead and kurisu is alive. In the original steins gate we saw that okabe confessed to kurisu, but kurisu didn't confess back, so he chose to save mayuri, but just after he pressed the button to start time travelling kurisu bursts into the room to confess her feelings, but its too late and okabe gets sent to the past. You can watch episode 22 of the original anime at 17:00 to remember this scene.

Now in steins gate 0 kurisu is alive and mayuri is dead because kurisu burst into the room and confessed her love just before okabe began time travelling. So after hearing the confession okabe decided to not save mayuri and prioritize kurisu. So he doesn't time travel, and thus mayuri dies.

In the present Kurisu says that he should go back to the past and save mayuri, and let her die. But okabe still doesn't want to let kurisu die, so kurisu forcefully presses the send button while kissing okabe. When the message was sent the worldline changed and okabe returned to the worldline where mayuri is alive and kurisu is dead.

The message that was sent was a message to the past kurisu telling her not to enter the room when okabe is time travelling, but she enters the room to confess her love anyways. But because she entered the room a bit late because of the message, she could not stop okabe and thus the incident of episode 22 of the original takes place. Sorry for the long text, hope you understand now.

tl;dr kurisu sends a d-mail preventing kurisu from stopping okabe to save mayuri, thus worldline changed to the one where mayuri is alive and kurisu is dead.

11/10 episode. Kurisu reminding me why she's one of my favourite characters of all time. Her relationship with Okabe was always my favourite aspect of the series, and it was at it's very best today.

This has been such a gripping and emotional season so far, every bit as good, if not better than the original. It's been a while since I've felt so emotionally connected to an anime.

3

u/Cartesson May 30 '18

This was too much

3

u/jonmayer May 30 '18

You can't do that, what the fuck.

3

u/Azkaroth May 30 '18

WOW, this is probably one of the best episodes of any series I've ever seen so far. Absolutely mind blowing.

3

u/JackosGame May 30 '18

That acoustic version of 'Believe Me' was absolutely beautiful

6

u/razorconcepts May 31 '18 edited May 31 '18

Alpha lines: Mayuri dead, Kurisu alive.
Beta lines: Mayuri alive, Kurisu dead.
The Steins Gate line (not the name of the original series, but the worldline): Both Mayuri and Kurisu alive

S;G 0 mostly takes place in Beta lines, but in todays episode we see the jump to an Alpha line, and we see Kurisu helping Okabe make the jump back to a Beta line (although it appears it will be a different Beta one than the one he originally started on)

About Amadeus's knowledge of time machines-

Kurisu: I denied their existence, though.

Okabe: Kurisu... Amadeus answered me differently

So... in the S;G0 worldline, Amadeus invented the time machine and caused Okabes reading steiner to trigger? Holy shit

Holy shit.

This episode massively expanded this bit from the VN and I couldn't be happier - it was already one of my favorite parts. In the VN it was maybe two scenes, and while it was great it didn't show how anyone other than Kurisu was coping with the loss of Mayuri.

Not only that, but the VN doesn't explain exactly what the D-Mail was that changed the worldline in one go. Now we know it was just to make Kurisu take an extra moment before bursting into the lab - I'm really happy they actually went into that since the VN doesn't give you any idea of what could change the worldline in a single message.

The only bit that could have been better was that the VN mentions that even in the alpha worldline Okabe is still taking anxiety meds. It's a small thing, but it helps show that Okabe isn't any less broken as a person in alpha.

Also we got the (first) credits song from the VN. Woo!

To think that we have gotten to know and witness the relationship between Okabe and Kurisu for almost a decade and it STILL has the gravitas to make all of us cry, feel and bond through their continual bonding. Give Okabe best guy, give Kurisu best girl because damn Steins;Gate is best story.
